On the coast near Willaf:

"It was a dark and stormy night," Lady Protector Goldenrod protested. "You
couldn't have seen anything, not really."
"I saw enough," her teammate Old Gold replied darkly. "When the shouts rang
out, the ship couldn't have been more than thirty yards away. Then the woman
screamed, the clouds rolled away from the moon, and I saw!"
"Yes, but WHAT? You keep going on with the forebodings and don't give me any
DATA."
Old Gold coughed heavily, then whispered, "It was the Black Ship."
Goldenrod sighed sharply. "A woman screamed on the Black Ship? If there is
such a ship."
     M. Kawaldar Tisinju Chardinee, who had remained silent until now, said, "There
was some ordinary ship, a packet, I should think, out in the bay. The woman was on
that ship, no doubt. And she screamed when the Black Ship accosted it." He was
silent for a moment, reviewing schedules. "Probably the packet Taross of Var, out of
Zuwayza, that should have docked earlier this morning."
"And there is definitely a Black Ship," Old Gold added. "I saw it, and if I
can't trust my own eyes, whose can I trust?"
"Yes, okay, I'll concede you a black ship for the moment. What did it DO?"
     "It accosted--"
"HOW?" Goldenrod screamed. Having gotten her teammate's full attention, she
added more quietly, "Did it use a catapult, or--"
"Rammed and boarded, from what I could see," Chardinee said. "The moonlight
didn't last, and the rain started up again, but there WERE all those lightning bolts,
even though they were purple--"
"Okay." Goldenrod felt as though she'd been fighting a total parry for an hour,
but she was beginning to get a picture. "There was a ship from Zuwayza--probably
from Zuwayza. It was rammed and boarded by the Black Ship, and, I presume, the crew
of the Black Ship, since the ship ITSELF couldn't board--"
The fourth member of their group, Lady Protector Peach Nutt, snorted at that.
Goldenrod waved her to silence. "--Rammed and boarded. And then what? Was the
packet ship sunk? Burned, looted and turned adrift?"
"Burned with magical fire in the heart of the storm," Chardinee said. "Magic
lightning struck it. I suppose it was looted first, but..." he shrugged, "we
couldn't really tell from the shore."
Goldenrod nodded. "Okay. So, what do you want us to DO about it? Wring our
hands and bemoan the event? Salvage bits of wood on the beach? Run up and down
tearing our hair and shrieking--"
"Ah...that." Chardinee smiled slowly. "We saw where the Black Ship landed
itself," he said. "Farther west under the cliff somewhere, and I think I could find
the spot. And I think we should--"
"We should go look!" Old Gold said. "People keep talking about the Age of
Adventure being done, but it ISN'T! We should go look for the Black Ship's anchorage
and maybe rescue the woman who screamed but at least capture all the pirates."

Aljafir:

The trumpets blared again. The tone was deeper than it had been the first time,
and stronger.
Shagrath hunched deeper into his hooded cloak. "Some poor sod has died for
that," the dwarf growled. "What a waste!"
"People of the True Blood go gladly to Kjarran at need," Korranjal answered. He
pointed to the pillar of dark cloud and greenish lightning that was building over the
Temple of Kjarran. "And you see, it's working!" The figure that materialized had a
human torso and a head that was almost that of a bull, the lower part of its body
remained cloud. "One of His Minions--I never thought I would be privileged to see
one!"
Shagrath hunched deeper into his hooded cloak. "You call that a privilege?" the
assassin growled. "That thing's as likely to eat us as it is to attack the Black
Ship." He had his sword in his hand and was inching along the wall away from the
sheltering doorway.
"Where are you going?" Korranjal tried to grab Shagrath's cloak, but the dwarf
slid farther away. "We may be needed to help here!"
"If the Vulture is sending His Minions, it's none of my affair," the assassin
said flatly. "I don't mix with Minions. And I don't care if the Black Ship does get
that courier, come down to it. There's no one out there that's MY friend."
"But..." Korranjal groped for a response. "Simple human feeling--"
"I'm a dwarf," Shagrath reminded him. "According to you Karnhorns, that means
I'm NOT human. So why should I care about anyone who is?" He snorted. "Let the
Black Ship start attacking dwarven convoys, and I'll be just as concerned as you
could hope for."
     "But--"
"Besides, I can't swim. How could I be any help in a sea battle?"
The Minion had naturally ignored the presence of the two Standby Gladiators on
the waterfront and sailed out over the harbor, as stately as any ship. As it neared
the place where the two vessels were struggling, a sword, or something that looked
like one, materialized in its hand and was raised high. Green light flowed along the
blade and dripped off it like water. Purple-black lightning from the attacking ship
leaped to meet it. The twisting column of light and darkness that marked the battle
between the two ships ruptured in an explosion that rocked the night.
Korranjal reeled away until his back thumped the locked door behind him. For
several minutes, he was effectively deaf and blind. A vice gripped his arm, dragging
him sideways. He stumbled and tried to hold back, but the grip was unbreakable and
the strength behind it great enough to move even his solid six-foot-four. He became
aware of a voice bellowing from a great distance and shook his head.
"We have to get away from here!" the voice commanded. "The damned ship is
spilling demons all over the place!"

                                      SPY REPORT

If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
ALJAFIR brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Of course, we're all terribly
impressed to see DR PEPPER win a fight and gain 20 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk,
CAPTURED ORC beat MARSHALL and MARSHALL lost 9 points. You're breakin' my heart.
DARK MAGICIAN challenged ALJAFIR's Duelmaster for a shot at the throne. And if
variety is the spice of life, ALJAFIR may be getting bland, as HI-JINX stays top dog
in the city. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some
of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha!
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward.
ALJAFIR, I am losing what little hope I had in you. HEROESANDFOUNDONES the most
avoided team? What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And it looks like LET'S DUEL!
avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me.
Hmph. TABETA UNIS was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was
the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh. I guess I can give a little credit to VAMPIRE
LORD of LET'S DUEL! for challenging up by 20 to TABETA UNIS. VAMPIRE LORD lost to
get 64 points of recognition.
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess
what brave team is developing these kinds of weapons?
What does the ALJAFIR arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Just wait 'till next time I show
up here, I won't be so nice! So nyaaah! I see the crowds are getting restless, I
must leave now-- Snide Clemens

Alexander the Great -- To you, this might be great, but I don't find it so.
(groaning) I'm getting too old for this stuff. -- Vurzhal Ur

Marshall -- True, a hero should be bold and resolute and so on, but you don't have to
prove it to me. (wincing) Really. -- Obida Paniri

Maximus -- You look more like a minimus to me, shorty. -- Straight Line

Maximus -- Unfortunately, no one has been able to explain to the Line the
inadvisability of taunting an opponent who has just beaten him up. Oh, well. --
Vurzhal Ur

Hi-Jinx -- So long as I stay alive, I'm NOT going to complain about a loss. It isn't
like I really had a chance against you anyway. -- Tabeta Unis

Khalum's Midget -- You're too tall to be a midget, unless you're a Shewish Midget.
Of course, nobody'd want to be one of THEM, because they're freaks. Probably the
result of radiomagicalactive contamination. -- Erbin Frorlin
P.S. Actually, I wouldn't have minded losing that, except for the sand bit at the
end. That was not necessary.

Lord Protector Dark Magician of Let's Duel! -- You expect "lands"? Beware what you
ask for! Many Lord Protectors received lands in the old days, recklessly large
grants in many case, and they have neglected them shamefully, not even visiting them
for years. We have had to repossess these lands in order to maintain Aljafir and its
arena properly. Oh, yes, the lands are important to the arena, as a tithe of the
taxes derived from them go to support the arena's operation. And if the land is
neglected, there is little to be paid in the way of taxes. Besides which the Khaliv
Ayrikas has stated very plainly that he--and the Satrap, may Kjarran shelter him--
feels that the arena has been given all the lands it needs or deserves. No more land
is forthcoming. Therefore, if you really WANT land, in the literal sense, you must
apply to the Office of Records and Rewards for a conditional grant of a modest plot,
to be made permanent when you have shown your intention to reside there and keep it
up.
Do not, however, assume from this that we are callous and unmindful of the
trials you have undergone in the name of Kjarran, and that we would send you to the
Isle with nothing to show for a token from your home. An engraved presentation cup
of fourteen karat gold, suitable for public display but not so large as to cause
difficulties in the cramped confines of an efficiency apartment on the Isle of the
Eye, will be waiting for you after your last fight. -- Zagrehj, assistant to the
Arenamaster
