Aljafir:
Korranjal was reluctant to go out to face the storm and the monsters again, but
not so reluctant that he stayed behind. At least he had armor on, and some training.
Many of the dock workers that were rushing out had neither. He had lost track of
Shagrath in the upheaval of the crowd, but knew the assassin would be out there, too.
The dwarf was no coward.
Green lightning burst against a shield of black force in the harbor as the
creature summoned by the Great Temple struck at the Black Ship again.
"Fools!"
It was a shriek of fury coming from someone behind him. Korranjal stepped to
the side in case the infuriated shrieker charged forward with blind rage and a sword.
Then he looked back, though there was little chance of seeing much in this rainy
night. Glowing red eyes. Korranjal flinched. That meant either a manager or a
cultist, and he didn't know which would be worse.
"Cursed fools that don't see beyond their blind obeisance to Kjarran," the voice
muttered.
The Guard recognized it now, it was Mejandr, a cultist who sometimes fought as a
standby in the arena. "Kjarran is the greatest god, the most powerful--"
"And you're a fool, too, if you believe that!" The cultist gestured with a
blade that glowed red along its cutting edge. "Kjarran is one god among many who are
his equals, and some who surpass his power by many degrees." He was trotting forward
toward the monsters as he spoke. "Yes, yes, I know this is not authorized belief!
Spare me your childish fears! The priests know the truth."
"If that is truth," Korranjal said, keeping pace with the cultist, "then why
don't they say so? You don't expect me to believe the priests would LIE, do you?"
"They would lie in a heartbeat," Mejandr said, hacking at some unidentified
obstacle in the darkness, "if that lie would increase their own power and authority!"
"And they'll kill you for saying so," another voice snarled. It was Terregolis,
the Dangerous Criminal from the arena. The Commission called him a dwarf, because he
had a beard, but Korranjal suspected him of being Shewish. Who ever heard of a dwarf
over six feet tall?
"Only if they can catch me," Mejandr said. He sounded breathless--he'd been
hacking steadily for the last minute or two--but smug. "We of the Nameless Cult make
no extravagant claims for our god, but He protects us just the same."
Korranjal expected Terregolis to make some sarcastic remark to that, it was
known that nothing was sacred to the Dangerous Criminal (that's what made him so
dangerous), but he got his own comment in first. "Why do you call them fools, here
and now, Mejandr?"
The crimson-edged sword gestured widely, then hacked into another monster. "If
the priests had let well enough alone, we would have lost the ship in the harbor and
no more. But the summoning of the Temple provided the precedent and opened the door
to the summoning of monsters from the Black Ship. As they should have known!"
Korranjal faltered in his progress as he grappled with that concept. "Are you
saying...the Black Ship couldn't have brought or released its own monsters, if the
Temple hadn't brought in a monster first?"
"Yep." They had reached the water's edge by now, and the cobbles were slippery
with blood and ichor from the battle that was still taking place. The cultist paused
to brace himself against a bollard. "The first monster's always the hardest, but it
opens the road for others, even others from different, ah, planes or monstrous
realms." The glowing red eyes turned toward him. "This is basic stuff, Lej. Anyone
who gets past his novitiate in the Temple should know it."
Another, more violent explosion illuminated the night. Korranjal looked around,
appalled. The waterfront was piled with bodies and pieces of bodies, human and
monster, dead and not quite dead, like ghastly storm wrack. There were more monsters
in the water, bobbing around uncertainly. And the Black Ship, locked against the
dying courier vessel, with arcane fire playing around both of them. And beyond them
the magic had ripped the clouds aside, displaying a sky full of stars, and two moons.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Another turn in Aljafir, another turn on the throne. I am certainly not Judge's
best Wall of Steel, but I am definitely one of his better ones. He complains that I
do not learn quickly enough. That is because I receive such weak matchups. Barring
unforeseen circumstances, I should be here next turn, and I should receive my invite
to ADM. See you next turn.
Your Duelmaster,
Alexander The Great
SPY REPORT
Hail and well met warriors of ALJAFIR! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. OBIDA PANIRI caught the eye of many
in the gladiatorial commission as she skillfully bested MAXIMUS and was awarded 16
points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, OBIDA PANIRI put
down MAXIMUS, causing him to lose 13 points of recognition in the process. The city
has turned out in honor of TABETA UNIS, for with hers arena victory she may now lay
claim to the highest position in the city! Informants "close" to the city champion
have told me that he never fights without pantyhose on beneath his armor. Watch out!
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. I saw one fighter that warriors
avoided when this week's challenge seeking began. MIDDLE WAY is feared. This much I
can say. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the
better part of last week avoiding MIDDLE WAY. Indeed it was HEROESANDFOUNDONES. I
can not but mention with disdain the name of RONALD REAGAN who this week posted a
challenge to a warrior a full 12 points below in the rankings. I thought RONALD
REAGAN showed great skill and promise when he defeated ERBIN FRORLIN. All right, so
I slept through it! Big deal!
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the
miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
The girls are as pretty in ALJAFIR as ever I remembered them....and the fighters
as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed
a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise
are angered by the same thing only once. Zontani Sharp Eyes

Khalhums Midget -- Listen, I know how things are figured, and you're too short to be
a midget! -- Erbin Frorlin
What's shorter than a midget? Don't tell me it's...cute. *shudder* -- Ed.
Alexander the Great -- So! You didn't want to fight, for instance, Tabeta, and the
Commission picked ME? Gods. Is this unfair, or what? The officials in this town
hate Shews. -- Vurzhal Ur
Hmm, it would appear that the Veteran Mercenary is also too short, only five-foot-
ten, and they call him a dwarf! Not true. -- Tabeta Unis
Maximus -- Today, you are every inch your name. -- Obida Paniri
P.S. Well done, even if I didn't much enjoy it myself.
P.P.S. My victory last time was unquestionably the product of superior...luck.
Osksi Noble? Pah. -- Straight Line
P.S. I think I'm going to go travel between two points, just for the heck of it.

HAMMER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
Be it known from the highest mountains to the darkest alleys of Alastari that
the veteran manager known far and wide as Hammer has now officially retired from
sponsoring contests as of September 15, 2005.
What a long time ago was a fun motivated activity to help promote our common
DM/D2 gaming interest in an effort to promote the growth and competitiveness of
selected arenas has become a far from fun experience.
In other words Hammer has had it!
The combination of real life situations interfering with the time needed to
effectively sponsor a contest, plus the attitudes expressed during such sponsorship
interference has led to Hammer closing his personal coin coffers and retiring from
his planned sponsorship of any future contests.
There are others in our close knit gaming community who are well able to step up
to the plate and continue sponsoring contests that make the basic game a fun
experience for all those who choose to compete and interact in such future endeavors.
Hammer thanks all managers both active and inactive who helped to make the
Hammer sponsored contests a historical and entertaining experience well worth the
time, effort and money spent over the past several years.
May the Cheers and the Jeers of future contests build upon the legacies of those
who have paved the way in years gone by to help make this game what it is today.
Hammer has no regrets for the part he has played in that history.
19 September 2005
I'd like to say hello to everyone I know that is still around after my being gone for
five years. Hope to see you all on the sands, and may your weapons strike true and
your shields protect you (except, of course, against MY warriors *grin*)!! -- Lord
Xiang, D2-101
5 October 2005
To those once of Willaf -- It's time to come back to the sands. I'm back,
exclusively at Willaf.... -- Kurd the Vivisectionist, Your Better
