"It's clouding over," she said. "It's going to be hard to see what happens out there on the water." "We figured on clouds," Lord Protector Fool's Gold told her. He was sitting nearby, giving a good impression of a boulder. He had experience with adventures. That he wasn't alarmed was reassuring. "A dark and stormy night, remember?" Peach's teammate, Lady Protector Moonjumper muttered something. It sounded like "exciting times." Fool's Gold laughed. "Is there any other kind?" A bolt of purple lightning streaked across the sky from the headland above them to the clouds. "Showtime!" The lightning hit nearby, striking the mast of a ship the gladiators hadn't seen. It was a lot bigger than their vessel, and a lot closer than seemed reasonable. How had it even gotten there unnoticed? Why didn't it catch fire from the lightning? The whole thing glowed with purplish foxfire, except the figures moving on the deck. They were shadows, dark and shapeless. Chardinee glanced over his shoulder at it. "The Black Ship," he muttered. "It's headed for us." He turned back to Goldenrod. "Maybe you should scream, so he knows we've got a woman here." "Oh, and that's going to be so subtle," she said, "a woman screams for no apparent reason, of course they won't be suspicious--" "You knew the plan," Chardinee said. "I hadn't thought it through before, okay?" "Oh, great, stage fright. Just what we need," Old Gold snarled. "Can't you--?" Goldenrod flung out a hand in exasperation as she prepared to tell her teammate that, no, she couldn't. And screamed in good earnest as something cold and soft and slimy curled around her wrist. Peach straightened, one hand going to her sword. "That was a very...genuine scream," she said. "That's Goldenrod," Fool's Gold answered. "There's a ship out there," Moonjumper said. She was staring into the darkness over the bay. "Hard to see, but it doesn't look natural. Not moving naturally, I mean." "How can you see anything?" To Peach Nutt, the night was unrelieved blackness, except when the lightning flashed. And the lightning was so bright it blinded her to details. "There are some advantages to being a golem," Moonjumper muttered. "Different design parameters." She stirred next to her own tree. "There's something in the water--not another ship or boat or whatever." "A monster?" Fool's Gold asked. "Probably. In this context, almost anything would be classed as a monster, wouldn't it?" Moonjumper's tone was dry. "Guess so, but--" Whatever further comment Fool's Gold had meant to make was drowned out by the roar of thunder as lightning struck the water three times in rapid succession. Purple flames burst upward in response, though there did not appear to be anything to burn. The three gladiators on the shore could now see the small boat holding their teammates and the larger vessel near it. The small boat contained two figures, but a humping something moved through the water as though swimming toward the larger, and it was clasping, or dragging, or carrying in some fashion, the screaming figure of Goldenrod. "That rowboat's likely to catch fire, isn't it?" Peach Nutt asked. "Yeah, and it looks like the raiders are only interested in screaming women," Fool's Gold added. "This boat is going to catch fire," Chardinee said. He was wiggling his oar, attempting to turn it. "You could lend a hand, Old." "Why aren't they taking us, too?" Old Gold asked. "Just want screaming women, I suppose." The Chardinee's voice was grim. "You and I will go down in flames if we don't get out of the danger zone. Row, dammit!" Pitching his voice as high as he could, Old Gold shouted, "Help, help!" SPY REPORT You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf Modeen. I return to ALJAFIR once again! What's with KHALUM'S MIDGET? He actually beat ALJAFIR's VENOMOUS CONCUBINE, and walked away with 14 more points from the fight. TABETA UNIS was reminded on the sands why ALEXANDER THE GREAT is Duelmaster. Advice to fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting! No matter the time or place, men will always duel. Warriors of ALJAFIR unite. You have only your games to lose! Many a warrior has met his fate in a hungover stupor. You young rapscallions, take note! Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? Are you as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm writing it before you read it. Oh, well. Remember--a good fighter needs both good skills and good luck. And I think of what we saw Jorja do, by way of demonstration, to a "cute" applicant. -- Erbin Frorlin Ah, that sounds interesting. -- Ed. Lord Protector Alexander the Great -- You expect "lands"? Beware what you ask for! Many Lord Protectors received lands in the old days, recklessly large grants in many cases, and they have neglected them shamefully, not even visiting them for years. We have had to repossess these lands in order to maintain Aljafir and its arena properly. Oh, yes, the lands are important to the arena, as a tithe of the taxes derived from them go to support the arena's operation. And if the land is neglected, there is little to be paid in the way of taxes. Besides which the Khaliv Ayrikas has stated very plainly that he--and the Satrap, may Kjarran shelter him--feels that the arena has been given all the lands it needs or deserves. No more land is forthcoming. Therefore, if you really WANT land, in the literal sense, you must apply to the Office of Records and Rewards for a conditional grant of a modest plot, to be made permanent when you have shown your intention to reside there and keep it up. Do not, however, assume from this that we are callous and unmindful of the trials you have undergone in the name of Kjarran, and that we would send you to the Isle with nothing to show for a token from your home. An engraved presentation cup of fourteen karat gold, suitable for public display but not so large as to cause difficulties in the cramped confines of an efficiency apartment on the Isle of the Eye, will be waiting for you after your last fight. -- Zagrehj, assistant to the Arenamaster 5 November 2005 It is with a proud heart that I announce the newest member of the Desolate Empire alliance.
