Your Talcama Battle Royale Champion
Denizens of Talcama, I, Manray, salute you as the Victor of the Talcama 'Battle
Royale'. You have all been tough competitors, and I'm very honored to have taken the
crown in this contest of contests.
Now, all pleasantries aside... what the hell happened to you guys? In the name of
Biff Frothingslosh - the Great Oceanic Oneness - I kicked your asses! My 25
points... and 9 points for second place? What a slaughter! I thought I was in the
'Toughest Arena in Alastari'... well, I guess criticizing that assertion would make
my victory less impressive... so there I stop. All Hail Biff!!
Now, all pompousness aside, I have had a great time, and I've really come to like
Talcama as an arena. Despite my rather flip and dismissive personals last turn in
which I poked a bit of fun at Doc 'Darth' Steele, I really have come to see this
arena as my favorite place to run a team; it might even rival my days in Willaf when
I ran up a 250-99 record so long ago. Of course, I would eagerly await the posting
of the online newsletters for this place like never before when the Battle Royale was
early in its progression, so my success in this contest ensured that I would have a
distinctly possitive view. How couldn't it?
I perhaps misrepresented myself a bit in taunting Doc and the rest of you, stating
that if I were to draw the ire of a manager the caliber of Doc Steele (well, he's
pretty much alone in that class in my mind, but some others might worry me as
well...) that I would have no problem with picking up and leaving an arena. Well,
that isn't exactly true. I'd like to think that I don't run from anyone. As a
matter of fact, the beginings of the 'modern' phase of my interaction with Doc Steele
began about 4 years ago when I was challenging him every turn with my best warriors
in ADM, Cuddly Koala, Candyacid and Powerlungeritis, despite the fact that I was
losing at least 3/4 of those fights. I hadn't been back long from my brief mid-90s
retirement, so Doc had no idea who I was anymore or why the hell someone was
challenging his guys like goblins impailing themselves on a laughing warlord's spear.
In fact he thought my warrior Cuddly was being run as an RSI warrior (or perhaps at
least on autopilot by some bored megamanager) since it was so old - a la Village
Idiot, hardly guided in its gameplay - and decided to challenge him a number of turns
in a row with I believe 'Shadow Knight'. Undaunted, I kept at him, flying in the
face of Doc's goal of having no one dare risk his wrath by challenging his
warriors... a wrath Assur in fact has now been told to expect. Well, when I met Doc
for the first time 3 years ago at the winter F2F, he was quite surprised to hear that
Cuddly actually had a human manager, and was also interested to meet the manager who
had shown a bit of bravery - if not foolhardiness - in so eagerly tossing his fodder
into the mouth of Doc Steel's hungry pipeline. I'm persistent if nothing else. In
the scheme of DM things, I enjoy my success as a regular arena DM manager, I always
have, it's where I generally excel, and I have a bit to learn when it comes to
tourney play and developing ADM warriors. But I love learning, and that's what I'll
do.
Truth is, I don't have enough of a history in Talcama to view it with the nostalgia
or fervor that Assur or Doc or The Muffin Man or Big Wave Dave or any of the rest of
you who have toughed it out and made it what it is would rightly show to this great
place. So, of course Assur would bluster right back at Doc, I'd hope he's not going
to scurry out of here, it's his home, he's the Historian of Talcama. I have merely
won the most recent contest held on these haunted sands; I could only hope to hold a
place as valued as Assur's here. But if someone got all 'can o' whoop-ass' on me?
Well, maybe I'd yell back, challenge them a few times... you know, see what I could
do. Unfortunately my DM priorities have shifted a bit the last year. A prolonged
'war of fortitude' is beyond my means. Which brings me to my next point.
I was getting tooled in the Transel B.R. by Doc Steele about as badly as I reamed you
all (I think when I quit I had 4 or 5 points to his 22 or 23, and I was in second or
third or something), so I said 'enough of this, my team sucks, see you fools in
Talcama!', and I was off to put my money to a better use. So, I came in here with
one of the better teams I'd ever had ready to rumble, talked some smack as the
contest started, and happily found myself atop the leaderboard, neck and neck with
Jolly and Big Wave Dave. But frankly, I didn't come in here to mess around and lose
the Battle Royale, I put a team here that could win it, and got some help with a
couple replacements that turned out well, and the rest is history. Did I expect to
run you all over like pink flamingos under a Combine? Not really, I thought it would
be tough, and for the most part it was, but something happened when I was at about 12
points where I had a good run of success, and the rest of you pooped your pants. I
killed two of Jolly's champions with my LU Viagorilla, Double-Blind Bat had just set
(or at least matched) the record for most successful PR to graduate from Talcama, and
then Big Wave Dave had two experienced warriors bite the dust (that was pretty ugly
seeing BWD lose that PR so close to graduation, I had to sort of cringe at that,
gah). I admit I tightened up a lot when I got to 22 or 23 points, and I thought it
better to not be too vocal lest I curse myself. So I have to take some of the blame
for the last few months not being quite as riveting as they could have been, I was
pretty mumm. But other than that, I pretty much had everything I needed to have
happen, happen. And so... I won.
Unfortunately, that means I also can't stay, though I know a new Battle Royale will
be occuring. As I mentioned previously, my DM priorities have shifted a bit since I
began my career here in Talcama. Consequently, despite having come to respect and
cherish Talcama, I have to re-allocate some resources to warriors I'm trying to prep
for upcoming tourneys. That means for the time being, I won't be active here. I'll
actually miss it. But sadly enough, I'm in a couple other contests, and I have,
well, a few handfuls of teams that have to be nurtured for tourney warriors. Will I
be back in Talcama? Yes, off and on the next few months, and I'll probably come back
and play more consistently sometime after the 2004 winter F2F. I'll likely even log
my name as a participant in the next Talcama Battle Royale, but will have to come in
late and see if I can catch up when someone's already ahead. No biggie, I can deal
with that.
But as for the past couple years here in Talcama? I loved it. I'm proud to have
brought this crown home in honor of my Frothingslosh bretheren, a group of diverse
and wacky guys who love this game. I've been friends with a couple of them since
before I played DM, others I met early on because of DM. Some I even had as
adversaries when I returned in 1997. But whether we're the most successful alliance
in DM isn't my main concern, or our real goal; we want to be a catalyst for action in
DM. If we can offer some wisdom while we poke you in the eye, that's great. Does an
arena or a manager look like they'd benefit from someone filling the role of easily
identifiable villan? If it keeps the game active and vibrant... that helps everyone,
to a degree. I'll wear a black hat, white hat, tall hat, short hat...
So, thanks for a great contest. Assur - and Neon as well - great job tracking all
our moves, the rundowns were excellent. I'll pop in and out, trying to make a move
on the new Battle Royale when I can. I know I'll be scarce the next few months, but
it really has nothing to do with Talcama or any managers in here. Maybe when I win
the lottery things will change... but I doubt I'm alone in that sentiment.

"On a Journey to Talcama"
Salute to all! I've heard such good things about your arena that I had to bring
my new tourney team "Enigma" here to test their skill. They say your gladiators are
very good teachers. I'm certain time will test this tale. Of course, as a tourney
team, their fighting will be sporadic. Nevertheless, when they do appear on the
sands, I'll be supporting their swords with my fountain pen. Hey! What more can one
ask from management? I know, you know, that we all know the pen is mightier than the
sword. Even now as I pause...my pathetic wretch of a warrior "I.R.S." is being
signed aweay to the Dark ARena. He loves to spout the well know axiom "death and
taxes." We all know taxes can be eluded, but as he shall soon find out, when death
comes to collect his toll he doesn't come up empty handed. They again, in my travels
I've heard of a man who defied the tomb. He has managed to amass a large and devoted
following. They say his name is Jesus and he sounds nothing short of an incarnate
God. On top of all this, they say his death conquered death itself. It's a very
intriguing notion. So, while in the process of moving next month, I intend to
investigate this matter further. Until we meet again, live free and die well.

Notes from the arena champ.
When Assur took me in and agreed to let me fight for him, in Talcama, I was worried.
Talcama has a reputation for being a tough arena. Yet here I am, at the top, and
Assur says that if I win, I'll be the 2nd best WOS graduate ever from this arena (in
a 3-way tie with Whirling Terror and Captain Flapjack at 17-4).
Assur almost DA'd me after my Initiates tournament, since I'd never again have the
opportunity to do well in a tourney. He held his hand because I kept on winning.
Now, however, my career is over. One last fight (I've challenged Suave's CJ)
Assur has more to say, so here he is!

notes from Assur --
Species PI is 17-11(2)-7-15-17-4-15 WOS, with Masters in attack and parry, an
advanced expert init and expert in defense. Fave learn Defense, strangely enough.
(13 Def vs. 19 Par and 15 Att). Mode all around. A well earned retirement, I'd say.
The only thing that colored my turn is that Numbered Won didn't get his invite this
turn, and I believe I found out the reason. Apparently, after his TC run, during
which he fought Manager's TPs about 11 times in a row, Manager was a bit upset and
put a curse on Numbered Won. The curse was intended to kill Numbered Won and while
that hasn't yet worked, it has kept him as a mortal.
Well, after contacting the commission, I believe the whole ordeal has been
straightened out, though the fact that he was missing 5 PPs from his records is very
suspicious. One has to wonder whether a curse is the only activity Manager engaged
in.
So, unless N.W. does, in fact, need a Riposte rating, he'll be getting the old invite
this turn. Time to look for a couple more young promising warriors to represent my
Next Generation of warriors!

There were two deaths on the sands this turn. The veteran, SUAVE, was slain by TUM
in a deadly challenge. Also, HERN of SEER KING matched up against ASSUR of ARROGANCE
and was quickly slaughtered where he stood.
THIGHMASTERS returned to the sands, winning a single fight. Welcome back to the
sands.
For those who care about such things, my picks went 48-27 with 3 TVs. I missed
CINDERELLA and ZOCORCUPINE in the Initiates class, but I was right on when I said
Initiates would be Talcama's strongest class. I also claimed there were no
undefeated Novices, but technically, there was an undefeated Novice in YANG CHOW, who
was 1-0 entering the tournament. I generally only consider 2-0 or 3-0 warriors, so I
left him off. He also TV'd. My top pick, TREFOIL, only managed 3-3.
NUMBERED WON and BUBBLES will travel to the Isle of the Eye next turn, fighting one
last fight here in Talcama before leaving. Congratulations to them and their
managers.
The Wall of Steel style could not maintain the top spot in the ten turn ranks,
falling back to 2nd after a poor showing. Total Parries, of course, regained the 10
turn lead.
BIG WAVE DAVE has either reverted back to childhood and is managing like Dr. Seuss or
is completely disgusted by recent recruits coming from the commission. Personally,
I've always wondered why a manager would look for fish in the mountains, but BIG WAVE
DAVE has been around and should know what he is doing (unless he truly has reverted
back to childhood).

Manray -- Congratulations! Winning the Battle Royal show great skill. Dominating it
the way you did is something else again. Very impressive. -- Doc Steele
Manray -- As to your Assur comments about not paying attention to you with your lead
in the contest, well, that is fairly easy to explain. First, I was very busy and
stopped keeping track of styles and all that important stuff. I just check the fight
descriptions and gave it my best guess. That is not the best way to go after the
leader of a contest. Second, I knew the whole arena was challenging you so I would
not get my challenges through very often. That of course is not good since we all
know getting your challenge is what the contest was all about. I figured I'd let you
guys battle it out while I fought my way back to respectability. I achieved that
goal. At one point you were within striking distance of winning, I was at -8 points!
I finished at 7 points, which is a pretty damn good turn around in a short time.
Third, the other guys were doing a great job holding you off of that last point or
two, so I thought they knew what your guys were and had the warriors to beat them.
What should I blindly insert my warriors into that? And lastly, you challenged me
maybe once, if at all, the entire contest and that was in response to one of my
challenges in the early stages. In other words, unlike Assur, you knew better then
to wake the sleeping dragon. If you actually wanted my attention, you know very well
all you had to do was challenge me once and it would have been on. I'll say no more
as you have earned the right to strut around my back yard a little bit. I see from
the ads you are leaving for a while. Will you be back to defend your title if we

you are just happy that it got me to write a personal ad. Anyway, I have passion for
playing in Talcama even when I don't write ads, that just means I am too busy or
there is nothing to say. As for killing and avoiding I was surprised by your
comments. I didn't know we had a no avoid deal in AD. I have a bad memory. That is
great. I will certainly take advantage to crush your warriors where ever I see them
there just for good measure. As for you not avoiding me here, well, I will believe
that when I see it. In fact, I will be infinitely impressed with you if you do not
avoid me. I might even drop the KDs from 9 back down to the usual 6-7 if I am able
to actually get through to your guys. We'll see if you actually don't care about
death when I get one of your guys planted. If you have learned to not care anymore,

All -- Well, I was giving serious consideration to pulling out of Talcama, as I just
didn't seem to be able to win here. But, 5-0 a year ago before I took a break, and
then 4-1 after the break has me close to bucking 50 percent, so I think I'll keep
trying this place. That, and my warriors seem to learn at almost double the rate of
