"Dark and stormy out," Modern Maturity noted, letting the curtain fall back.
"It's always dark and stormy when something is about to happen," Sports
Illustrated muttered. "It's a plot or something."
"No doubt," his teammate said, "but the question is, what KIND of plot? Is it
one we will be forced to take notice of? I point out that our contracts are very
specific: we cannot be forced into an adventure."
"No new adventures happening this summer anyway," the Sport responded.
"Too bad." Hot Rod looked up from the greasy mechanism he had been tinkering
with for the past hour. "Things've been kinda dull around here. An adventure might
be just what Zuwayza needs."
"I think NOT!" MM said sharply. "One need only glance through the archives to
see that 'adventure' always equals 'disaster'. We do NOT need a disaster, an
earthquake, a storm, an invasion, or ANY kind of disaster."
Hot Rod put his greasy mechanism down on the sheet of paper, provided earlier
by Modern Maturity, that protected the table from it and wiped his hands on a rag.
"You know, if you weren't a golem, MM, I'd say you were a perfect Little Old Lady."
Modern Maturity fixed him with a severe look. "What is wrong with that?"
Before Hot Rod could answer, the Sport said, "It's boring, that's what."
"Right. Boring." Hot Rod made it a point not to glance at his teammate as he
said that. His annoyance, however, was plain. "There are adventures which are not
disastrous, and Zuwayza needs one of them. Like maybe...a chariot race and carriage
show!"
"People don't want to look at carriages!" Modern Maturity protested.
"More do than you'd think," Hot Rod began.
"And lots of people like to look at a race," Sports Illustrated added.

                             Notes from the arena champ.

Whoa! How did I end up as DM? Well, I had a relatively easy fight against Modern
Maturity. And Ved lost his fight against Jill Oppy. Don't know how long I'll be
here. I've only got one expert so it might be awhile or one of you guys with more
skills could knock me off. Master wants me to mention that he currently manages four
of the five Karnhorn duelmasters. In Willaf, Sully of Shroud In Mystery has just
taken the throne. In Aljafir, Quivra Ngedo of Balance of Terror will reign once more
before departing for the Isle. In Veastian, Ethon El Keer has taken the throne in
hopes of graduating soon. And here in Zuwayza, it's me. We've got to get that
Jurine team up and running again. Master would love to have all five Karnhorn DMs at
the same time.

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail and well met warriors of ZUWAYZA! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team JAGUAR WARRIORS was
unseated this week as FUNKY FOLK moved up from 3rd ranking to take the top spot with
a 3-0-0 record for the round. HELENA caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial
commission as she skillfully bested VETERAN MERCENARY and was awarded 17 points in
recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, HEDED HAG put down BRYAN,
causing him to lose 8 points of recognition in the process. This time victory fell
to the grasp of the usurper. All hail MODERN MATURITY, Duelmaster of ZUWAYZA! Would
you believe that over half of the old women in ZUWAYZA seem to feel that they could
fight better than you gladiators?
Many and various are the arts of battle. In ZUWAYZA "art" is a word that has
long since passed from the language! I saw one fighter that warriors avoided when
this week's challenge seeking began. FUNKY FOLK is feared. This much I can say.
Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better part
of last week avoiding FUNKY FOLK. Indeed it was JAGUAR WARRIORS. Loose talk at the
arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are
after BRYAN. Watch your back! I can not but mention with disdain the name of VED
BUENS ENDE who this week posted a challenge to a warrior a full 13 points below in
the rankings. I thought VED BUENS ENDE showed great skill and promise when he bested
SPORTS III. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the
miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
The girls are as pretty in ZUWAYZA as ever I remembered them....and the fighters
as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed
a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise
are angered by the same thing only once. Zontani Sharp Eyes

Heded Hag -- You can hate me if you want to, but I think you are going to have to hit
me before you can hurt me and you haven't done either yet. -- Helena

Matarse Fury -- Don't let your jealousy get the better of you. I will take my
undefeated record out of this arena in a few turns and rest on my laurels until my
anticipated appearance at the Halloween Party. -- Bryan

Hot Rod -- Sorry about that whole broken rod thing. Your experience and winning
record had me scared at the time, but I guess I just underestimated my abilities. If
you can get back to winning again and face me once more, I will try to be more
careful with your rod. -- Helena

Noachian -- I think five kills is enough. You better put a leash on that aimer of
yours or hurry up and get him moving on to greener pastures. He's going to get you
into trouble. -- Valamond

Papa Bear -- My condolences on the loss of Sue Shee. At least you got some sort of
payback before Jill Oppy left for the Isle. Lew Siffer is looking good so far too.
-- Valamond

Heded Hag -- This is GROSSLY unfair, as you are not a hag at all! Hags are FEMALE,
dammit, and I can HANDLE females. And then YOU come along, kick the tires, sneer at
the horses, scratch the paint, and just generally RUIN my day. I hate that. -- Hot
Rod of the Ruined Day

Deo Volente -- I feel that you have, in your enthusiastic and, let us face, less than
wise youth, become carried away with the VIOLENCE of this activity. It is not a
mature response, but I make an allowance for your great youth. It will pass. --
Modern Maturity

M. Chardinee -- Gods, you're disgusting, with your "secret handshakes" and
"passwords" and your insufferable superiority. Eat sand, Chardinee. -- Sports Ill.

Ved Buens Ende -- My dear boy! Surely you realize that if you go around killing so
many gladiators, what you will be blessed with is a lack of opponents? -- Modern
Maturity

Hideki Hao -- But dents are WRONG! They're the gateway to rust, the breach in the
wall to let in disaster! -- Hot Rod

Bryan -- Do you think it will be so simple to get out of your debt, fool? -- Lek
Tormuz, Merchant and Moneylender

Sports Ill. -- We of the Chardinee Society will extract our revenge for your
unnecessary force and roughness. -- M. Oshindo Chardinee
