The chariot careened around a corner on one wheel, just as his teammate Times
had predicted. Hot Rod clung to the reins, not because he thought he could control
the monstrous beast between the traces, but just for something to hang on to. A whip
cracked, and he flinched.
His new teammate Blood Sports had the whip, and he was not driving the horse
forward with it. That lash had burned across Hot Rod's ribs the one time he'd
thought he could jump out. Though he still didn't understand why, Hot Rod knew that
he was doomed to remain in this chariot and ride out the whole desperate course.
He squinted into the rainy night, trying to guess where they were. Sometimes he
glimpsed a building that looked familiar, other times... what he saw would have been
strange in a nightmare. And he had seen no other living thing. True, the rain would
keep any person or animal indoors who had a door and no reason to come beyond it.
But there should be somebody. A thief. A member of the night watch. A feral cat,
even.
Zuwayza might have been a city of the dead for all that he could see. As he had
that thought, he shivered.
Maybe it was.

SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly ZUWAYZA games. MATARSE FURY caught the eye of many in
the gladiatorial commission as she skillfully bested HOT ROD and was awarded 20
points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, WHITE CHOCOATE put
down FLIGHT JOURNAL, causing him to lose 9 points of recognition in the process.
This time out HEDED HAG made his bid for the throne as he challenged MODERN MATURITY
in an all out contest of skill for possession of the title! The city has turned out
in honor of HEDED HAG, for with his arena victory he may now lay claim to the highest
position in the city! Informants "close" to the city champion have told me that he
never fights without pantyhose on beneath his armor. Watch out!
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city ZUWAYZA. My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in ZUWAYZA
these days is VALAMOND'S CREW. At least, most blades in town are looking to avoid
them. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard pressed to find any
of JAGUAR WARRIORS last week. Busy avoiding VALAMOND'S CREW? Loose talk at the
arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are
after VED BUENS ENDE. Watch your back! I cannot but express pride for the
fearlessness of CARY YON who cast caution to the winds and challenged VED BUENS ENDE,
a fighter 26 points higher. The FUNKY FOLK stable will be up late tonight, for
indeed it was CARY YON who claimed victory in the contest, ascending 26 in
recognition!
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears
arms. One thing is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt!
The girls are as pretty in ZUWAYZA as ever I remembered them....and the fighters
as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed
a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
