Somewhere in the hills between Aljafir, North Fork, and Kurukar:
Vekhirn, who had once been court magician to the Satrap of the Glorious Empire,
stared into the mirror-smooth surface of a rain-pool. The reflected clouds shimmered
and darkened; a black tower emerged, distinct against the background of stormy sky as
though it shown with an anti-light. As quickly as the image formed, it began to
twist and retreat, struggling to fade from his sight. He had not needed information,
he would have let it go gladly; the Black Tower was painful to see even by this
means. It was a wrongness, torn from a dimension alien to human senses. It never
appeared precisely the same, though the magician did not know if that was due to some
mutability of its nature or to his own inadequacy of vision or if it was deceiving
his spells. He wasn't sure that mattered.
All of which aside, it was not the tower that he was attempting to observe now.
He had sensed for weeks now that a power was building in Kurukar, a great wave of
darkness that would spill disaster across northern Alastari. But he had not, so far,
been able to pin it down and determine what form the catastrophe would take.
The magician sat back with a sigh. And this was going to be another failure.
"No good again, huh?"
Vekhirn glanced over at the sympathetic face of one of his most valuable
assistants. Fool's Gold, he was called, a graduated gladiator from Willaf, and one
who took the title "Lord Protector" very seriously. Graduated-and-retired gladiators
from all over northern Alastari had rallied to assist him with an enthusiasm and
dedication that still surprised him. Most had assisted very well indeed, and this
Fool had been one of the best. "Nothing," he said. He held up a hand to stop the
apology he could see forming. "It was through no fault of yours, nor of any member
of your team that set the amulets around the Tower. Simply, the spell of concealment
is still too strong for me to pierce."
"What if he never dissolves the shield?"
"He will have to, once he begins to act. No magician, however strong, can
project a spell through his own strongest shield. No doubt he believes that by that
time, it will be too late for us to resist."
"Well, he's wrong on that, isn't he?" When Vekhirn didn't answer, the gladiator
repeated his question. "We will be able to resist him when the time comes, won't
we?"
Vekhirn sighed again, feeling older than his years, and he had a lot of years.
"I hope so," he said. "But until we know what he's trying to do--"
"He's invoking some kind of death magic." Another gladiator, this one female,
emerged from the brushy hillside. "I could tell that much, but not whether his
intent is to cause death, or to manipulate the dead, or--" She let out her breath in
a hiss. "I couldn't get close enough to tell, not if I didn't want to get sucked up
in it."
"You took a hell of a chance, Moonjumper," Fool said. "Don't do that again. My
nerves can't take it."
"Indeed, our friend Fool's Gold has the right of that!" Vekhirn said. "Had I
known your intent, I would have--"
"I'm not under your command," she snapped.
"--tried to talk you out of it," the magician finished. "I would not have any
of our company take such a risk unless, until we are sure there are no other courses
open to us. But since you did... how close were you able to get to the Tower?"
"Closer than I ever want to be again," she answered fervently. "I think if I
had been fully human, the emanations would have broken my will. A hundred and fifty
yards, maybe. Close enough to be sure it was the Black Kaliv himself who came out.
I followed him to the necropolis and watched one of his rites." She shivered.
"Another thing I don't want to repeat! All blood and chained souls, it was. When a
soul is trapped, it howls like a mad wolf. May I never hear such again!"
Vekhirn stood, tossing a handful of pebbles into the rain-pool to make sure the
link was destroyed. "He is harvesting, trapping souls, then?"
"That much I am sure of," she said. "And you already discovered the human
sacrifices and that he is trafficking with demons. Isn't that enough?"
"Enough to know he must be destroyed, yes, but not enough to tell us HOW. This
whole business is intensely frustrating. Well, let us go back to camp and see what
other news has come in."
Note to readers and potential writers: Feel free to use this storyline as a
springboard, to branch off in stories of your own, or play around with aspects that
appeal to your creativity. Participation is not only allowed, it's invited. Or
volunteer a gladiator or two, I'll try to make at least some use of anyone who steps
forward. Those of you with teams in arenas dm 28: Morya and dm 29: Lapur may be
interested to know that this storyline is on a collison course with that one.

SPY REPORT
If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
ZUWAYZA brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Of course, we're all terribly
impressed to see LUSCIOUS win a fight and gain 52 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk,
TIBERIUS beat ISIS and ISIS lost 13 points. You're breakin' my heart. DAN STEPPE
challenged HOT ROD II for ZUWAYZA's Title this turn, and guess what happened? And if
variety is the spice of life, ZUWAYZA may be getting bland, as DAN STEPPE stays top
dog in the city. The Drunken Ox, humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries.
Where do they get this stuff? From ZUWAYZA's trash dumps?
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. THE
MAGNIFICENT MAGS, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided
team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And who led the way in this mass
act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was IDES OF MARCH. Ha ha ha
ha! HOT ROD II was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the
DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh. I notice ANTONIUS challenging down 18 points to
fight ERIC CARTMAN, IDES OF MARCH doubtless has some rotten excuse for such an insult
to honor. This is the sort of thing that makes the price of admission to ZUWAYZA's
games worth it! ANTONIUS was overcame by ERIC CARTMAN!! And we have PUBLIUS in a
challenge, going down 10 points for the fight. Guess what? I thought PUBLIUS showed
great skill and promise when he was beat by BLACK BELT. All right, so I slept
through it! Big deal!
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for ZUWAYZA's
morgue. More variety. Let's see, 17-9-0. Pretty good record for a living warrior.
A sad one though, for a dead one. Such is the case for SOLSTICE of TEAM CHAOS. Tsk.
The bigger they are, as they say. And what I say is that LUSCIOUS had better watch
out for TEAM CHAOS, seeing as SOLSTICE felled she this turn. Titanium shields and
bamboo daggers, guess what brave team is developing these kinds of weapons?
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Phlllt! Just had to do that before
I leave the fine city of ZUWAYZA. I feel much better now. Paste this one in your
scrapbooks, you'll need the kindling come this winter-- Snide Clemens

Pete Moss -- You wish to place an ad to sell potting medium? Fine! This, I can do.
Many will respond, I am sure. It's that season. -- Nifty Nickel
Antonius -- You damned Rirorni are just looters to the bone, aren't you? To meet me
in the arena and immediately beat me up in order to steal my bracelets is the act of
a barbarian. -- Ornament
P.S. Not that barbarians don't have their good points.
I ran over the Convicted Assassin, but someone pulled him out of the street while I
was turning around to run over him again. Damn. -- Hot Rod
No. Absolutely not. Kung-fu is NOT the coming thing, and a master of that back-
alley art is NOT the Man of the Week. -- Times
Publius -- Ah...you're the one who's always writing letters to the editor, aren't
you? Hmm. -- Black Belt
All -- Please do not attempt to access the Stone Golem in the near future. It was
damaged--mentally, if such a term can be applied to a golem--by the behavior of Liza
Lotte. The staff magicians say that it will be necessary to completely "blank out"
the Stone Golem's "operating system" and reinstall it before the golem can function
properly. -- Verjazed, Arena Steward
Hot Rod -- You're a menace to pedestrians everywhere and should not be allowed to
drive a carriage ever again. -- Rondol of Osksi, Have Blade Will Travel
Times -- Acknowledge my superiority and that of my art, you fool. The pen is not
mightier than the sword in the present, only in the extended view--and even then, it
is questionable. What price pens if all scribes are slain with swords before they
can write? -- Khalid Sinj, Master of Kung-Fu
Tiberius -- I agree that the Fratsfa Slave was pathetic, but this does not mean that
he was cheap. To be continually importing these fellows is almost as expensive as to
be constantly resurrecting them. A simple crushing defeat should suffice, should it
not? -- Verjazed, Arena Steward
Stewie Griffin -- (snivel) You will buy me dinner after that, won't you? I'm so
hungry! -- Matarmal the Waif, cruelly convicted thief
Wee Man -- Beware the alleys. -- Halkad Steeltoe, Truculent Beggar
