SPY REPORT
Good afternoon, my darlings! It is wonderful to see you once again. I've been
sitting here watching the fights and thinking about what I'm going to report from
today's activities. We normally go through the usual routine of Duelmaster, avoids,
deaths, and significant changes in the rankings. This is all well and good, after
all, this is a spy report, the point is to report the facts. So, for this edition,
I'm going to walk you through my pre-report routine. My walk through the fighters'
area onto the Commission offices for my paperwork, and finally into the stands to
watch the action.
As I strolled through the fighting area, I took a look at my notes for the
upcoming matches. Our Duelmaster was off to the Isle, so we would be getting a new
champion. I headed over to the prep areas to scout out the Challenger Champions. The
Commission had yet to release the fight docket, so I was only sizing up the
competition, not truly knowing if one of these warriors was going to have the
opportunity to fight Hastur for their own shot at glory. Deval had been showing
strong the past few months and sat in the best position to face Lord Protector Hastur.
It was good to see Nutbolt Larry getting ready for the fights as well after missing
last turn's matches. He too had a chance, if he wanted to take it, to post a
challenge. As I looked over all the combatants, each one in the right circumstance
could be our next Duelmaster.
Most of the fighters are respectful. I do get the occasional catcall from the
Rookies, but what is to be expected from these youngsters? You can never get
accustomed to the odors you discover in the fighters' quarters. There is the usual
stench, but it is mingled with leather and weapon oil too. It is not uncommon to
smell a cheap incense burning. I used to believe it was to mask the stench, but the
more time I spent around the fighters I finally learned the truth: They are a
superstitious lot and the sport is filled with as many wives' tales as a country
tavern. The incense I smelled on this particular day was sold to a Rookie who was
assured it would grant him a victory on the sands.
I heard the muffled blast of the first signal horn in the arena. This means the
Commission was ready for the fights to commence. I made my way out of the fighters'
staging area and to the Commission booth. The steward was nice enough to have all of
my papers in order! I scooped them up and then hurried to my regular seat so I could
watch all the matches. The early events are always the Initiates. The more popular
warriors and style masters are held until the end. The Title match is always the
marquee fight every cycle. It happens last, though one that doesn't visit the arena
and only looks at the NL would assume it happens first. No! You have to build up to
that perfect crescendo in the fights where the crowd is nearly at the breaking point
with their anticipation. Then... BOOM! You have the main event!
Looking through my reports briefly, I pass them over to the two golems that
always accompany me to the arena. They search out the anomalies and patterns. Sure,
I could do this myself, but then I would miss the action on the sands. They give me
such information as who is avoiding who, how many warriors are challenging one
another, which teams appear to be feuding. They are quite adept, but they are magical
constructs built for that purpose. They are not much for conversation. I may need to
fix that at a later date!
There were only 7 challenges this cycle. It is a rather low number, especially
when we consider one of those was a challenge against the Dark Arena. Poor Owl! Cpt.
Clean did try and bloodfeud Bad Penny, but it was unsuccessful. Vault of Thirsty
Thugs challenged Nutbolt Larry, depriving him of fighting for the throne. It wasn't a
wise challenge on Vault's part. He lost in a rather lopsided 1-minute fight. The
most avoided team for the turn was Darque Knights. They were avoided mostly by I'm
Not Eggbert. There was not a most challenged warrior this time. As I mentioned, the
challengers were few with only 5 standard challenges being issued.
Leading up to the main event, the fights were bloody! I feel like a curse was
lingering over the arena this day. I don't say that for effect, but as a witch, you
can just feel these things. I could not pinpoint a source though I always throw a
suspicious eye on those known to deal in such magics. The first death saw yet another
Polite Beggar die. Mr. Grunkle is young and zealous from the previous matches I have
seen; perhaps this was merely an accident. Next, Carrion Call fell against Pollux
Lynxear, the more brutish of the Lynxear brothers. The fight was a 2-minute gore fest
and not for the squeamish. I highly doubt this was an accidental death. A few bouts
later, Asdiel Wyrmeye, a veteran in Seam, was killed in a match with Zushi. And last,
Capt. America fought Deval, who had just finished up a series of blood feuds with
Weirding Ways. Deval survived those challenges but fell to the good captain in a 2-
minute fray.
When the calls came down from the Commission announcing the final matchup, it was
Dwimorberg from Phantom Regiment who was given the opportunity to fight Lord Protector
Hastur. Dwimorberg challenged and went into the fight with a well-crafted plan he
formulated with his manager Nomad. All the hard work appears to have paid off as we
crown Dwimorberg as our new Duelmaster! Cheers echoed across the sands from the
excited crowd. There was also a parting shout for Hastur as he waved to the crowd of
Seam one final time.
Okay, that is it from me, my sweets! I will see you next turn if the gods will
it! I would like to see some more stories of interest about our warriors and guilds
in Seam. Perhaps a few managers can tell us more about their guilds' histories or
even their guilds' goals in the arena. I think those would be great topics, but let's
not limit ourselves to those few. See you in a few weeks!
