TEAM SPOTLIGHT
The Aimed Blow Style
Once again, there is just not enough space in the personal ads to give a proper answer
to the questions posed, so we will do another short spotlight to attempt an
explanation.
1. Why are ABs so unbeatable?
It has to do with a (and opinions will vary as to WHAT "it" is) programming "glitch"
or error or even an intentional programming inclusion that boosts Aimers' defense when
they are unarmed. I have heard it only applies to ABs, while I have heard whispers
that every style can benefit from it. I do not know the validity of that claim
though. Essentially, their boosted defenses, high ATT, and one of the best Endurance
conserving styles in the game make it a perfect combo to win in the upper levels.
2. What change brought about the AB Dominance?
The overall meta of the game has changed in the last 30 years, but the rumor is the
biggest push to AB dominance was the collapse of RSE (Reality Simulations Europe).
The story goes (and I have no verification of this, only the rumor mill so I do not
stand by it as Gospel Truth -- it may be complete bunk) guys at RSE ran the program
over and over again to its end with maxxed warriors and discovered the discrepancies
with ABs at the end game. If you played 20 years ago, then you probably remember the
upper levels used to be completely dominated by Lungers, now it just happens to be
Aimed Blows.
3. Why hasn't anything been done to even things out?
You have to remember that when D2 started, only Basic existed. Advanced was never in
the original plan as I understand it. It was added later and so all the advancements
of styles and skills were never calculated out to their logical conclusion. Aimers
dominate Primus and while they may be reaching their potential in the upper levels of
Contenders, they are not unbeatable in all the other areas of the game.
a) They have a docked nearly 10 skills in the upper classes. We do not know the
exact formula that RSI uses, but people smarter than me have surmised that ABs get on
average 10 less skills than everyone else when determining tourney class (e.g. an AB
with 140 total skills will be classed ADM, while a warrior of another style will be at
150 and class as a Freshmen). We do not KNOW the formula, but for the most part
across the board these hold true in all the upper classes from Freshmen to Contenders.
b) I firmly hold to the idea that nothing is wrong with the Basic game. Every style
has a chance to TC in the Basic tourney game, though some may have a statistically
better chance than others based on skill bases, the number of entrants, etc. I
believe every style HAS TCd in the last 10 years in Basic (once again, a more tourney
savvy manager may correct me). In fact, the general consensus among many managers
with Aimers is to run them in Rookies, sometimes Apprentices, and then stop running
them in the tournaments because they do not do so well in Basic against the pure
offensives such as Strikers and Lungers. Every style has its place such as Strikers,
who are dominant in the Basic game but do very little in Advanced. I think most
tourney managers would agree that ALL styles are viable through Freshmen, and then
there is a drop off in performance by some into Contenders (I think a LU, PL, WS, and
ABs have all TCd that class in the last 3 years). I personally love SLs but I know
they aren't going to be much use from a tourney perspective beyond Freshmen or ADM --
maybe sooner, but I'm still in a bit of denial.
c) RSI is slow to make changes IF they make any changes. While this may be
frustrating to some, I would argue that it is probably a key reason that it is one of
the longest-lasting PBMs in existence. We know the product we are getting and we know
for the most part the investments we are making in warriors are not going to be wasted
tomorrow, which is probably the answer to your next question.
4. Why is it fair for one manager to fight himself in Primus?
The simple answer is because he is not doing anything that anyone else CAN'T do in the
game. He just did it first. He planned. He invested. He trained. He is now
reaping the rewards of decades of work. It is rarely pointed out that he worked each
of those warriors to their current positions through time and investment. As he was
developing those ABs, everyone else had the same opportunity to develop their ABs and
flood Primus. Many chose not to do so because they believed that LUs would continue
to dominate the upper levels. Managers are now doing exactly what he did to put their
very best ABs in Primus, but everyone is playing catch up to TMM at the moment.
Leveling that field by any means other than natural development is essentially
punishing one manager for having the foresight to plan ahead. Do I like the AB
bug/glitch/programming? Absolutely not, but it is what it is and everyone has the
same opportunity to use it. I used to be one that advocated some type of forced
retirement for warriors in that class, but I have changed my mind the last few years.
To paraphrase another manager, "Dethroning the king by combat is more fun and more
challenging than getting rid of him by political means."
I guess I should put in the disclaimer that this is just my opinion on the matter.
You will get a variety of different answers from others, and you might even get them
this turn. Hope it helps or at least helps you not to get too discouraged with the
overall game.
For me, Basic is still my greatest enjoyment. Graduating warriors is my happy place,
and it has only been within the last 4 years or so that I have started playing in AD
regularly. There are parts of it I like, such as training warriors stats to 25 and
seeing those high skills ratings like Grandmaster kick in! There are other parts I
loathe, such as waiting a year for a single stat train (which is turning my hair
gray)! Find the parts of the game you like and focus on them.

23 turns.
One year ago this week, we returned to Alastari to compete in the exhibition
tournament in the city of Korvan Saleh. I was quickly inspired to reopen the Paradox
Academies on Noblish Island and here in Seam shortly after.
Over the course of the past year the Paradox Academy graduated its first warriors to
the Isle -- 5 veterans from teams across Alastari that hadn't been active for over 14
years, as well as 3 new recruits that had first stepped onto the sands exactly 1 year
ago this week in the Korvan Saleh arena.
And now a new milestone.
On this turn, the 1 year anniversary of our return to Alastari, this humble team in
the good city of Seam has earned the Duelmaster's Throne and Vendetta is the current
top team on its 23rd turn. We enjoy our good fortunes today, for they may be gone
tomorrow.
Today we salute Gehena for this achievement. From humble beginnings to the Throne in
just under 1 year!
Tonight the drinks are on us, for tomorrow we spill blood.
-- Master Paradox of Vendetta
***---------*---------*---------*---------**---------*---------*---------*---------***
On Aimed Blow fighters.
The Paradox Academy recently graduated its first fighter of the style, so I can't
claim any level of expertise on the subject. But we've amassed some knowledge that
we're more and happy to share for a modest fee.
Aimed Blow warriors are not universally dominant across all classes of competition,
but they are heavily over-represented for a number of reasons. They seem to have a lot
of success in the Rookies class before other styles improve their Decisiveness,
Attack, and Initiative ratings enough to overwhelm them. They are also the undisputed
kings of Primus, with no other style even coming close to challenging their dominance.
Strikers seem to generally be the most dominant style in most of the other early
classes, but all the other styles have either an outside chance of causing an upset,
or find sweet spots in various classes where they tend to excel. Lunger are the
perennial bridesmaids, ever in contention in every class except for Primus, where they
are still a fairly clear second. Outside of the upper ADM classes and Rookies, you'll
find that Strikers and Lungers vastly outnumber Aimed Blow fighters.
So then why so many ABs?
They're possibly the most diverse style. You can run them fast like Strikers. You can
run them as offensive leaning hybrids like Lungers. And you can run them as scum who
swing back like Wall of Steel fighters and some Total Parries.
They have very low endurance burn. They excel at learning Attack skills and hitting
their targets. They seem to swing about their damage ratings. They receive Defensive
bonuses when fighting unarmed. They eat scum for breakfast.
And even with all these advantages, unfortunately they also seem to die at higher
rates than other styles.
Many managers are trying to develop Fist favorite ABs for ADM, so quite a few get made
and get run to graduation if possible.
When it comes to their numbers, there are all kinds of effective builds.
Most have either high Wit, Will, or both if they can, but generally require a 17, 19,
or 21 Deftness to succeed long term (preferably 21 DF). Some Con is generally
desirable to prevent those early deaths, and to whether the storm of attacks when they
choose to stand still. Strength is very helpful, but some of my most successful ABs
have had 7 or lower STR.
The most famous AB design is perennial Bloodgames favorite referred to as the Jalon:
17-16-3-3-21-3-21.
An Aimed Blow fighter of this design wears heavy armor, swings a Scimitar in its
offhand, and focuses on training physicals until it graduates then slowly learns till
it's ready to harvest many Tis on the long road to Primus.
I can see the glazed look washing over your eyes, so I guess this lesson will have to
come to an end. I leave the rest to my betters to explain for now while I try to get
some last minute training in for the warriors of Vendetta.
Cheers Seamites.
We look forward to seeing you on the sands.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
I may not be the biggest, nor the fastest, nor the strongest, nor the smartest, nor
the toughest, nor the most skilled, nor the most lucky. But today, I'm the most
recognized and popular fighter in Seam. Even if my manager is eager to see me retire,
today I get to bask in the glory of these accolades.
-- Duelmaster Gehena of Vendetta
SPY REPORT
Welcome, my darlings! It is always a pleasure to see you in the arena on this magical
day known as "Fight Day!" There is not much that compares to this kind of excitement.
Good things come to those who wait, and we have been rewarded with a wonderful set of
fights on the arena sands. Let's take a look at all the exciting action for our
beloved Seam!
Thanks to Gehena for addressing the masses before the fights today! I always love to
see the fighters involved with the fans. We've had two straight turns with
Duelmaster's speeches! It is glorious to behold! Gehena defeated Fal Icetooth for
the title last turn, and it looks like we got a rematch this turn. I also love it
when the Duelmaster takes action and issues a challenge or two. Fal Icetooth received
the challenge, but the outcome was slightly different! Fal overcomes Gehena in 2-
minutes and retakes the throne of New Seam! Well, it was a bit more than overcoming
in this instance. Fal killed Gehena in this fight. I will have to look back to see
when the last title fight ended with a fatality. Congratulations to Fal Icetooth, who
is managed by Master Darque. Condolences to Paradox, who loses his first warrior in
Seam (if my records are correct).
The most challenged warrior for turn 147 is Bokeh. Not sure what has made that
Pixelbender so popular with the other warriors, but be warned, Bokeh! The Handyman
challenged up 1-point to fight Bokeh, but was not able to overcome his opponent. It
took 6-minutes, but Bokeh won the fight and sits at 27 recognition points. The most
avoided team is an oldie in Seam, but faithful from the beginning of this arena's re-
opening. Huckle's Cats were avoided the most, and they were mostly avoided by
Vendetta.
Ahringhol took a heavy tribute this turn from our dear arena. We only lost 3 outside
of the Dark Arena, but 2 of them were arena veterans. We have covered our former
Duelmaster's death this turn. The other arena veteran to pass into the next life was
Rufolf Von Flugel from Huckle's Cats as Davina scores her first kill. Darque Knights
also lost a new warrior. While death is tragic at any level, I feel much more despair
when our veterans die, especially those close to the top of the ranks and graduation.
We bid Vox Sunfire farewell as he heads to the Isle of the Eye. I also must bid you
adieu and ride off into the sunset. Well, I'm walking instead of riding. Also, I'm
not sure of the exact time, but I'm cofident the sun has been down for hours. Oh
well, my sweets, I will see you next turn. I am sure there will be much to write
about with all the drama surrounding this turn! Dead Duelmaster! It isn't a lot of
drama, but enough to get us through! See you next turn!
