A rented hall near the arena--

"Vic's got a point," Lord Protector Bruise remarked when Madam Butterfly
finished shrieking. "A truly heroic Canari wouldn't just go off and die, he'd fight
for his woman."
"This is supposed to be a tragedy," Butterfly said in a deadly calm voice.
"This is supposed to--"
"Well, how about if I kill my beautiful fiance's cruel and hard-hearted father,"
Vic began
"He isn't cruel and hard-hearted," Miranda Grace cut in. As the heroine in this
opera, she felt she had a stake in these developments, too. "He has my best
interests at heart, or at least he THINKS he does, and--"
"Okay, we'll incorporate that, too," Black Victor agreed. "Like this: Thinking
that the heroine's father, played by my teammate Bruise there, is cruel and hard-
hearted because he's trying to separate me from my one true love, played delightfully
by you," he nodded at Miranda Grace, "I, the Heroic Canari, challenge the father to a
duel and kill him. Not realizing, you see, that it is actually the MOTHER who is
cruel and hard-hearted. I must flee, and you flee with me because you love me, but
you also hate me because I killed your father who had your best interests at heart.
The cruel mother," he grinned at the way Butterfly winced every time he said that--
she had that part, "sends assassins after us. I die defending you from the
assassins. You decide you love me more than you hate me, so now your life is ruined,
and you plot revenge on your mother...."
Lugo Beloski, who was scheduled to play the hero's villainous rival, frowned at
this. "It'd make a good play, maybe, but one of those heavy psychological plays, you
know? I thought this was opera. You know, melodrama with singing. I think maybe we
should stick with the original script instead of changing it when we're so close to
putting it on."
Madam Butterfly crossed the bare stage quickly and kissed Beloski's ugly face.
"You're a dear man," she purred. "So discerning! You're quite right, of course, we
should stick with the original script." She turned to fix Vic with a much less
approving gaze. "And you're just making all these wild suggestions to annoy. Stop
it right now." She glanced around, gathering the attention of everyone present.
"Let's take this from the top and let's do it RIGHT."
"No props or scenery," Bruise protested.
     "Imagine them."

The remodeled warehouse was silent for several minutes. The Heroic Canari,
played by Black Victor stalked out and met Miranda Grace, the Heroine, enfolding her
in his arms (perhaps just a little too enthusiastically), and declared his undying
love for her. Before she could reply, Lugo Beloski, playing himself as the cruel and
scheming villain, sauntered out with a fine insolence and announced that his men had
driven the hero's out of the castle and taken over.
Madam Butterfly tensed. Vic had already expressed his views on this scene, too:
that a proper hero would immediately challenge the villain to a duel and kill him,
then drive the usurpers out of the castle. But this time Vic stuck to the script.
He simply denounced the villain as a Usurper, declared that he was not without
friends, and that he would go assemble those friends and reclaim his own.
So did Miranda Grace, despite her earlier declaration that a PROPER heroine
would have been right beside her man in battle. But she merely sang of her love and
loyalty and was sure that her parents would stand beside the true Baron.
The laugh with which Beloski greeted that was a masterpiece. He really did know
his villain stuff.

The performance flowed on without any serious hitches, and Madam Butterfly began
to think that they could pull this off after all. If nobody got any wild ideas about
"improving" the plot....

A back room over a bar:

"All right, all right, you don't need to go ON about it, Ace," Livid muttered.
"We've heard all about the infamy of Butterfly and Black Victor before. Several
times," he added testily. As a graduate of the team, he didn't like being dictated
to by a mere Challenger Initiate. He indicated the script--it was Ace's copy from
when he had been slated to play the Hero--with a contemptuous flick of his fingers.
"This is nonsense. Poor plot development, inconsistent characterization, clumsy
pacing. Terrible stuff."
"It's opera," Vidal, another Lord Protector, pointed out. "Opera isn't supposed
to have a strong, well-done storyline." He considered himself a connoisseur of such
things.
"That's another thing!" Livid snarled. "The team name--it was a perfectly
decent, proper team name: Team Gore. I bet it was that snooty wench Butterfly who
got Nick to change it--"
"No doubt, no doubt, but that is done, and we can't change THAT. What we can
change is this little play that Madam Butterfly plans to put on." He spread open the
script and indicated a scene. "The introduction of a crossbow bolt at this point
would make a great improvement in the dramatic values, don't you think?"
"As long as that Vic guy gets it in the back, I think it'll be great," Ace
growled. "I'll show that Butterfly 'dramatic values'!"

Dear readers, I'm going to make a heroic effort to get this opera on the stage in the
next two or three turns. If anyone would like a part in it, speak up! It's not too
late! A personal, or an email to Livia@reality.com would do the trick.

Jhans:

"That is a fight you cannot win, Princess Morra," Chancellor Ethylbyrr said. He
leaned forward to emphasize his point, one hand on the report that had sparked the
discussion. "It is better not to enter a battle you cannot win."
     "Darron wouldn't--"
"Princess, your brother is no longer a boy, he is a young man now," the old man
said. "He will not be pleased to receive...advice from his older sister, much less
commands. Even without his new friends, he would be reluctant to--"
"All right, you've made your point." She looked away. Looked out the window
across the city of Jhans, but she didn't really see it. Didn't want to see it, if
the truth be told. She was surprised to realize that what she really wanted to see
at this moment was her husband, Gryzash the Golden. She had not felt strongly about
him one way or the other, theirs had been a marriage of political expediency. But
Gryzash was--had been--a confident, decisive man. One whose very presence would awe
these quarreling nobles of Jhans into obedience. Unfortunately, Gryzash was dead.
Her thoughts shifted briefly to their son, Gorris. She might have stayed in Jhans to
fight the treacherous 'advisors' of her brother, except...it was her first duty to
protect her son and defend HIS heritage. Let Prince Darron worry about Jhans now.
It was time for her to leave him to it, for good or ill.
"I must take Gorris to Sibikhas," she said finally. "That is where my duty lies
now. That city is his to rule, by rights, but it is easier to hold onto power than
to win it back after it's been lost. Will you stay here and advise Darron?"
Ethylbyrr laughed sadly and shook his head. "The boy--the young man--wouldn't
have me," he said. "His new friends won't want to share the influence, and...I am a
reminder of his youth. Which he would prefer to forget as he strives to become a man
in his own eyes."
"If you remain in Jhans without a royal post, your life won't be worth--"
"It will be worth nothing at all," the old man said. "I will be dead by the
time you clear the city's gates."
She nodded. There was no mercy in the Delarquan Federation for someone who fell
from power. "Come with me to Sibikhas, then. It would be a shame to waste your wit
and experience, old friend."
The old man half rose from his seat across the table and bowed. "I would be
honored to serve you in Sibikhas or elsewhere, Princess." Seating himself again, he
said, "But you cannot simply decide to leave Jhans and then go. You will need, at
the very least, bodyguards. The Jhans Royal Guard you cannot take with you--they
belong here and will provide some protection from Darron, if he does not run
completely mad and dismiss them. So you will need--"
"Gladiators," she said firmly. "Two or three, at least, as many as half a dozen
perhaps. They are--"
"They are crude men, for the most part," Ethylbyrr protested.
"So? They are less likely than any others to have political axes of their own
to grind. I will have gladiators for bodyguards." She grimaced. "I will need
them."

This is a call for volunteers. A personal, or an email to Livia@reality.com will do
it.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Greetings, Sunset!

Inexplicably, I find myself your Duelmaster. Things have gotten a little thin at the
top, I guess. The recent spate of inactives looked much reduced last turn. Let's
keep it up now. Sonia, that was a pretty good scrap for the title. My manager loves
that match-up because it's always so much fun to 'watch'. However, to avoid
monotony, I'll challenge The Butcher first this turn and you can be second. I'm not
sure when the commission will decide I have enough experience for my invite, but I
may be pontificating here for several turns yet if the rest of you don't get
yourselves in gear. Just a bit of extra motivation for you all.

Until the next time such honors are heaped upon me,

Tsunami

                                      SPY REPORT

Good day, in SUNSET a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets poor.
So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. It seems the training can make the
difference, as BOOK OF STINK is pushed out of top team by RAGE, who came from 9th
with a 4-1-0 this turn. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are
sorrows to drown for SWORD OPERA, whose 0-5-0 this turn dropped them by 6 into 12th.
RAGE stable has parlayed this turn's 4-1-0 into a 8 space move up the rankings. This
brings them up to 1st place. Good work, guys! The STORM WARNING guild has had a
4-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind
of thing can lead. SUNSET welcomes a new team to our ranks, unofficially of course,
for now. But welcome nonetheless to COSMIC FREAK OUT. Let's see what you can do.
And let's see, EMNITY fought ORIGINAL STINK and gained 21 points and contributed to
RAGE's 4-1-0. MIRANDA GRACE has lost to GERYON, falling 18 points, while helping
make SWORD OPERA a 0-5-0 turn. The attempts to dethrone the Duelmaster have failed,
and TSUNAMI remains SUNSET's top warrior for another turn. By the way, was that our
Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped under the table at Wildlife Unlimited?
I tell you, a green quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling. A basher
friend of mine assures me this is true. SONS OF SATAN has cause to stand tall, as
they were SUNSET's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat.
And guess who avoided SONS OF SATAN stable the most? Believe it or not, it was
YAKUZA. Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that I ATE A PUTY TAT from
CARNAGE CANARIES was SUNSET's most challenged warrior this turn. In a brave attempt,
KLEP from BOOK OF STINK challenged up 24 points to fight LUGO BELOSKI from the SWORD
OPERA stable. KLEP perhaps got its just desserts, seeing as it won victory over LUGO
BELOSKI and ended up with 54 recognition points. VEG-O-MATIC of TRANSGRESSORS had
better have a good reason for challenging down 10 points in a challenge which he
lost. I thought VEG-O-MATIC showed great skill and promise when he was bested by
SONJA BLOODBANE. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? SONS OF SATAN made what looks to be a tough decision this turn, as
they sent CHARON, with a record of 7-9-2, to CHARON death. Farewell, his. Wildlife
Unlimited declares a free round for GLIMMOR and all of GRIM FANDANGO, for having
revenged RAGE's WRATHCHILD for killing one of their comrades. A brave warrior does
not carry a red shield, he has nothing to cover or hide when the fight is over.
Consider well.
I like this place, SUNSET, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls.
Who could ask for more? Well, I'm burning daylight here in SUNSET and I've a long
road ahead of me. Happy Trails. Until you see my quill in SUNSET again, farewell--
Alarond the Scribe

Hmm.... What's this over here.... -- Rogan

Tsunami -- Nicely done on your part. I shall return. -- Sonja Bloodbane

Kitty Chowder -- Defensive strat? Whatever, you lost. -- Sonja, feeling a bit stand-
offish today

Wrathchild -- You're gonna learn aaaall about wrath, son.... -- Glimmor

Cat Kabob -- Cats or canaries, they all taste like chicken to us. Prepare to be put
on a stik (pun intended). -- Grim Fandango

Well, there I am, dead again. Crap. Not much of a loss this time, however. 11-9-
17-17-9-6-15 basher, great damage. Gackle was a 14-14-12-17(+1)-15-3-11 PS. I think
it's time to clean house again.... -- Stik

Rogan -- I know what you mean, things have quieted down a bit last couple cycles.
It'll pick up again post holidays, stay around! -- Stik

Congrats to our only fall tourney victor, Mr. Twister! Looks like a lot of near
misses, too. Better luck at the face, perhaps. -- Stik

Charon -- Get your butt back down here. A PR who refuses to learn ain't worth the
effort to watch! -- Damion

Stik -- Don't go giving yourself too much credit. I think EVERYBODY has my number
these days. Figures that my guys get the most challenged and the biggest down
challenge. I think some severe pruning is about to begin. -- Damion

Emnity -- You aim too high. You're lucky this time. -- C. Canary

Ska-Boom -- If Tweety was any good he would have won. I hope you enjoy some
bloodfeuding. -- C. Canary

Klep -- How did you do that? You're not supposed to be able to steal initiative and
parry! -- C. Canary

Stik -- Oops! I welcome your honorbound bloodfeud. I won't avoid. If it is any
consolation, you don't teach well. -- C. Canary

Persiana Jones -- Thanks for the easy win, but you don't teach well. So please
challenge somebody else. -- Kitty Chowder

Klep & Stik -- Sorry about using the "stink" motif in one of our gladiator names.
Just kind of slipped by. -- Mr. Twister

Gale Force -- Nice fight. I'm sure we'll meet again, hopefully with a better ending.
-- Razor Melody

Bell Bottoms -- Shouldn't wear those kind of pants in the arena. You could trip on
them. Thanks for the great learns. -- Mr. Twister

Wrecker -- Now you've done it. My manager now told me to skip my dinner and go to
the midnight buffet. -- Chunky Famine

Glimmor -- You're a dancer? Fantastic! We can use lots more dancers, even if the
only thing you know how to do is grim fandangos. You could dance a grim fandango in
the background, sort of like an ominous sound track, whenever something especially
bad is going to happen in the opera. -- Miranda Grace

A Userous Merchant? That's the best the arena could come up with to match against
me? Gods, that's insulting. -- Rudi Jamos

The Dangerous Criminal, by courtesy so-called, has no IDEA what it means to be truly
dangerous. *I* showed him that. -- Lugo Beloski, professional villain

Minami Kaze -- Ha! You thought you HAD me, didn't you, you slant-eyed little
troublemaker? But I'm not that easy, bub. -- Ace

Slaughter Prst -- Oh, cheese, the letter-count limit is the pits, isn't it? -- Talper

8 December 2003
Greetings! I would like to invite everyone to Jhans (DM 36) for the first annual kLk
St. Valentine's Day Massacre (kill contest). We will start the contest off with the
ceremonial burning of the Andorian flag on turn 450. (Six turns away. Roughly mid-
February.) The contest will run for 10 turns. On turn 461, 3 separate victors will
be announced. Team with the most kills, warrior with the most kills, and alliance
with the most kills. Prizes will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most
kills and to the manager of the warrior with the most kills. The prizes will
probably be team roll-ups. The number of roll-ups has yet to be determined. The
contest is sponsored by Jhans' newest, (but by the time the contest starts) largest
alliance, the kLk (pronounced "klick"). -- Polarius, mgr. of Blitzkrieg DM 36
