Merry freakin' New Year!!!! Wooooo!! (Looking around and getting up as bugs and
small rodents flee the area) Hey, where is everyone, the party was just gettin'
goin'!! Lightweights, all of'em!! Oh well...I see once again I've been divested of
my clothing, gotta do something about that...where am I again, Sunset you say??
Hmmm...(holding head while appearing to think hard)...OH YEAH!!! The whole MOTS
thing, that's riiiigghht, now I remember, the reason I'm on this godforsaken island!!
Ok, I may have missed a little, so let's catch up...(snatching an arena
newsletter from a horrified passerby)....hmm, seems I wasn't the only one taking the
holidays off, where the hell is everyone?? Looks as though our cuddly host Sylvester
Frothingslosh has left the building along with Mordraith and Mr. Twister has taken up
the lead. Gads, he even fought for the title last cycle! Got his ass kicked, but
HEY, title bout!! And let's see, Stik died again, aHAHAHAHA, that's too funny! Oh,
dead again!! (falls down momentarily) That poor guy, really!! I see Sensei Jan
continues her "slow and easy wins the race" strategy, climbing all the way up to the
lofty adepts with another win. Klep workin' his way up, with Slaughter Priest hot on
his heels after a nice little challenge win. Youngblood sits out while C. Canary
languishes at the kid's table, I mean, the initiates, whoops!! And the rest of the
pack! Still snorin' off New Year's, the slackers!! Perhaps they were all tourney
timing for the Face, hmm? We shall see who may reappear next cycle. Until then,
carry on, as you were!! (Strutting off down the street naked, dirty, and hung over)

A rented hall near the arena--
"Excellent! That went exactly right," Madam Butterfly declared, "and you can
SEE--or you would have, if you'd been in the audience--how very good it was once you
settled down to follow the script."
"It'd be better if we fixed the plot," Black Victor countered. "Lots better--"
"What it would be if you 'fixed' it," the diva answered tartly, "is another
story altogether. Write that other story if you must, but don't import it into MY
opera!"
"All right, all right." Vic grinned at her. "But I love to watch you fume,
you're a knock-out when you're angry!" He ducked under the book she threw at him.
"No, I mean it! When does the play go on the stage?"
"At the end of next month." She sighed and shrugged. "I know it's a long wait.
But there was a problem with the theater.* The end of next month is the earliest we
can get it."
"Oh, gods!" Bruise groaned dramatically. "You're telling me we have to keep
practicing, I mean rehearsing, this for six weeks?"
"No," Butterfly admitted, "that would be foolish. We would get stale. We'll
take some time off, then get back together to polish it when the performance date
comes nearer." She glanced sternly at the mortal members of the cast. "Mind you
don't die in the arena before then!"
*The arena on Sunset doubles as a theater and a public auditorium on non-fight days.
Being an island with limited space, the government of Sunset has to conserve that
space.

Notes from the arena champ.
Hail, Sunset!
My last column as your DM and I know you're all disappointed, but after watching my
fights the last few turns the commission seems to feel I'm ready. It would be remiss
of me if I didn't offer some credit to the Froshers Sylvester and Ichabod since my
manager wasn't wild about working me up as he did for a place like Sunset. They
convinced him, however, and here I am not only still kicking but graduating with some
success to my credit. I'm 11-5(2)-10-17-21-11-11 lunger. I've got an attack bonus
but pretty bland favorites, MO/HI, SS and riposte for learn. Just MA att, AE
initiative, defense and rip.
This turn I reminded Mr. Twister that a TV challenge is no replacement for the skills
to beat your opponent. The Tsunami rained the Twister out in less than a minute. At
least by getting the jump he provided the opportunity to learn a skill. Sylvia B., I
hope you've been practicing, the fights have been on the boring side since last we
met. I intend to make you earn it if you want to replace me on the throne of honor
as I graduate.

SPY REPORT
Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day,
I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! STORM WARNING? Who? YAKUZA is the top team
these days, buddies! He who laughs last didn't get the joke. Speaking of laughing
at jokes, observe IRONIC TAILS. Last week they got 1-4-0 to drop by 5! Good things
come to those who fight well, as SONS OF SATAN can attest, moving up by 6. CARNAGE
CANARIES had cause to celebrate, after KITTY CHOWDER got 25 points by beating THE
BUTCHER. THE BUTCHER certainly had a baffled expression on his face, after losing to
KITTY CHOWDER and losing 18 points in the process! What can be a greater victory?
TAISHO has taken his place as the top, as SUNSET's new Duelmaster. Word has it one
team in SUNSET is taking speech lessons to try to bore their opponent to death. I'll
bet it works.
My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter.
But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! Like a horde of jackals fleeing from
the lion, so did the "warriors" in SUNSET avoid CARNAGE CANARIES. As a woman of good
breeding scorns the "warriors" of YAKUZA, so did that sorry team shy from CARNAGE
CANARIES Is it charming personality? Conversational abilities? Good oral hygiene?
Whatever it is, ROGAN is the most challenged warrior. As a confidence booster,
HURRICANE challenged I ATE A PUTY TAT, down 17 points. Do you also slay vicious
rodents in your spare time, HURRICANE? HURRICANE will have to start challenging
legless old maids next, as she was defeated by I ATE A PUTY TAT. Good show, I ATE A
PUTY TAT! Place your bets! ROGAN is the long shot of the week: they challenged
SONJA BLOODBANE, up by 38. Like a mother cat batting her overly rambunctious kitten
into submission, SONJA BLOODBANE quashed ROGAN. But ROGAN, if at first you don't
succeed... Mismatched by 15 points, DAMION overcame PHATE. Is this really worth
noting? I thought PHATE showed great skill and promise when he was bested by DAMION.
All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... Like a tattered,
worn-out, faded, out-of-fashion garment cast out to rot, ZERO COOL of MINISTRY OF SKA
has been summarily sent to the Dark Arena. Congratulations, LUGO BELOSKI. The
manager of RAGE should have sent STORMCHILD to the Dark Arena for having a 5-4-0 long
ago. Oh hard! that to strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting!
All good things must come to an end. More important duties call me. Like a

ZalCon2 Updates (1/9/04)
The contest will be starting on the turn due February 23rd, 2004 and run for 20
turns.
Only one team will be allowed for each manager in the contest, regardless of
whether additional teams are announced as contest entries. No exceptions for any
reason.
The Style Master points should read that there is +1 point for beating a member
of your own style even if the warrior is not registered for the contest.
Rolling points for consecutive turns as Style Master means that your warrior
gets the extra point every turn after the first 3 that he continues to hold the
title.
The points for Quality Wins should be clarified to read the winning warrior is
ranked below by the number of recognition points needed for each bonus point at the
start of the fight. For example, Warrior A (3-2-0, 17) beats Warrior B (4-1-0, 35)
and receives 2 bonus points under Quality Win for the 18 point difference in the
ranking.
I believe that is all the clarifications for the moment, please feel free to

Come one and all to DM 47 (North Fork) for the Third Annual Turf War! Rules of
the contest will be posted in Turn #208's newsletter (due date Feb. 23). The contest
will begin on Turn #209 (due date March 22).
So, get a team there and register! To register, you must send me a donation of
one (1) rollup CERTIFICATE. Then, declare your alliance and team in the North Fork
personals. You may also declare a warrior as champion, and that warrior will earn
(or lose!) double points in the contest!

CHAOTIC WINDS
Once, long ago, the four Winds of Time descended upon Alastari like a TEMPEST of
epic proportions, they slew everything within their all-encompassing reach. They
left nothing. In their wake lay smoldering ruins.
In their haste they sped towards the center of this great land like a colossal
giant would step across an ocean. The four storms picked up momentum on their way
towards each other. A collision was eminent.
The first storm wind, the oldest and wisest of the four was named APEXALUS. The
second, FLAGGSTAFF, was the quickest and loudest entity ever created. The third Wind
of Time was MATRIATIN, neither old or young, quick or slow, but fierce and feisty all
the same. The forth wind, ASSAMITHIUS, the youngest yet most creative in its means
of destruction.
When finally they merged at the center of ALASTARI, an incredible destructive
explosion occurred. And when the smoke and debris cleared they were one. CHAOS was
born.
And Chaos spread across the diminished lands reeking havoc and doom with its
passing, and destroying allover again that which already lay in ruin.
