Quicksilver watched as the painters applied the final coat to the new sign that
hung above the saloon's entry. Soon, he would spin the open sign around in the
window and the lanterns on the chandelier would once again vibrate from the ruckus
crowd enjoying themselves after the games.
He paused a moment as he tried to remember if he had greased all the palms of
the city officials who regulated the establishments throughout Sunset. Quicksilver
certainly remembered his meeting with arenamaster Dagath Sevenfinger and the fat
representative of King Cyrath, Balthus he thought his name had been. However, he
could not recall paying the taxman. Quicksilver shrugged has he turned to the small
crowd that had gathered in front of the Silver Saloon, watching the workers.
In the crowd he could see several local managers. Among these were Stik and
Damion. Quicksilver highly respected Damion and his Sons of Satan but this Stik
character and his "friendly Delarquan" views made his stomach turn. He would long
ago have added Stik to the long list of barred patrons if it were not for Ultraist's
insistence that Stik, despite his beliefs, was a friend.
Also in the crowd were several gladiators currently ranked in the arena, only a
few of these he knew by name. The others were as yet too green to earn any
recognition.
Quicksilver turned back to the newly renovated Silver Saloon. It was indeed a
grand structure standing nearly four stories into the sky, filling nearly one-half a
city block. He shuddered with the thought of the cost of the renovation; surely,
Ultraist had spent at least 1000 Talcaman Lytarri on it. The ironwork on the front
alone would rival the entire worth of the Broken Bone establishment on the far side
of town.
A smile formed across his lips as the last of the workers climbed down from the
porch roof. At last it was complete.
Quicksilver stepped onto the hardwood porch, gently ran his fingers across the
intricate wrought iron railings and then pushed the large double doors inward. The
smell of fresh varnish mixed with fine whiskey with a hint of smoked ham rushed
across him. A perfect smell, he mused as he moved forward into the grand room which
featured a large bar at each end and a raised stage in the center. A sly grin
crossed his lips when he thought of the reaction from the crowd when they laid eyes
upon the entertainer he had signed for the grand reopening. Most of the managers and
gladiators of today would not know the legendary Eve when she stepped on the stage to
sing and dance, but Quicksilver was certain that they would never forget her once she
stepped off.
At the very back of the room stood a large set of double doors that led to the
V.I.P. section, which was frequented by The Iron Council, city officials, high
rolling out of towners, and top gladiator managers like Doc Steele when he is in
town. Quicksilver paused; he would need to hire a guard for that door and only an
immortal lord protector would do. Later he would place an ad, surely there was a
retired immortal in town that would meet the requirements.
At the far right of the room was the centerpiece of the renovations, the Sunset
Hall of Fame. Quicksilver was by far more excited about this addition than any
other. Soon the forged iron busts of the first four inductees would arrive and a
special ceremony was planned for the unveiling. Already in the room hung many
portraits of past events of significance; the opening of the arena, the crowning of
the first Duelmaster, etc.
"It would be the greatest attraction in the city," Quicksilver mused as he
thought of the overflowing coffers he would soon have.
To the left of the grand room lay the kitchen and storage. All the equipment in
the kitchen was of the finest caliber, most of which imported from cities in Andoria
since Andorians were adept at the culinary arts. "At least they are good at
something," Quicksilver thought.
The second floor was the Inn. Twenty-five rooms were available for long or
short-term rental; all were furnished with every amenity of the modern day. These
would be available to almost anyone who had the astrums to pay. The third floor is
called the barracks. It consisted of fifty spartan rooms designed to house
gladiators that fought under Ultraist's banner and those of his friends and special
guests.
The fourth floor suites would rival any in Alastari in grandeur. Ten large,
lushly decorated rooms adorned this floor and there was yet another bar, exclusive to
the fourth floor residents, centrally located for convenience. Ultraist himself
lived here full-time when he is not away on business. These exclusive rooms were
only available to special guests and by invitation only.
Quicksilver frowned, he had been with Ultraist since he started his very first
team, in fact he himself had captained that team and yet today served in the Dark
Arena under Dagath Sevenfinger. Yet he wasn't permitted to live on the fourth floor.
Quicksilver brushed these thoughts away. Today was a day for celebration and
dark thoughts would not spoil them. Soon the local riff-raff would spill into this
exquisite establishment, marring the new flooring, fowling the very air, engage in
senseless brawls over the arena or women, and taint the Silver Saloon's reputation as
a respectable upscale establishment. And Quicksilver wouldn't have it any other way.

SPY REPORT
Greetings, warriors of SUNSET! Once again I've been called out of retirement
for my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Ya gotta be quick on yer feet!
Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust! Block out the pain! SWORD OPERA is now
ranked 2nd with a 2-3-0 turn. KANO CLAN showed SUNSET what they were made of as they
fought with a vengeance to walk off with 3-0-0. What's with BODDINGTON'S? It
actually beat SUNSET's M. CHARDINEE, and walked away with 23 more points from the
fight. Major screwup at TRIAL & ERROR. TERRE HAUTE lost 12 points to MUSHIKU BO.
Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe TERRE HAUTE will provide more easy wins...
KHALHUMS DWARF was reminded on the sands why STELLA ARTOIS is Duelmaster. I suppose
you want to hear some rumors and dirty gossip about your fellow fighters? Tough!
No matter the time or place, men will always duel. The most avoided team was
SONS OF SATAN. The bums at KANO CLAN couldn't face the challenges from SONS OF
SATAN! No excuse for that! How well I know the feeling of being the most challenged
warrior, SHERWOOD! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you. TUSK
expects the easy win by going 35 points down. ADDUCTOR MAGNUS will find this a hard
lesson! TUSK subdued ADDUCTOR MAGNUS. GRIM FANDANGO calls this fighting? In my
day... Keep challenging up 39 points, BONEDUST, and I won't have to write about you
much longer. DJININSKI always accepts those kind of challenges... Who knows what
was running through BONEDUST's head, but DJININSKI rearranged it for him. How soon
will BONEDUST make a challenge like that again? I hate going to the effort of
writing about the kind of fights that VERGIL gets in. He fights people like WOODY
HAYES, 13 points below. I thought VERGIL showed great skill and promise when he
defeated WOODY HAYES. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. Someone told GHENGIS that EQUITES VIRTUS never
Bloodfeuded, that he'd have an easy kill. Well, I'm sure whoever misled you is right
sorry. And this week the Duelmaster--whoops! D.R.I. has one week left to avenge
COUCH SLOUCH's death by excessive hits on the part of CALPURNIA of EQUITES VIRTUS.
Many a warrior has met his fate in a hungover stupor. You young rapscallions, take
note!
Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. SUNSET is
a nice place to live, but I don't like to live in nice places. Time for my
medication, so I'll leave now. Practice, practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen

PERSONAL ADS
Stik -- It's nice to be back. -- Ultraist
Shaman -- Hopefully, you find Sunset as enjoyable as you once did and decide to
stay. -- Ultraist
Stella -- Nice challenge, congrats on the throne. -- Asylum
Toker -- Some pretty impressive kill streaks you've been on! What other arenas
would I have seen you in? -- Ultraist mgr. Blackest Pride, Meow Mix, & Outsiders
All -- It's about time for another "Managers on the Sands" competition, don't you
think? Any interest in this? -- Ultraist
Crip -- Good to hear from you in the arena! I keep forgetting you live in the
"Great White North." I'm almost there myself! It's obviously a challenge keeping
up with the fast arena turn around, but I'm glad you're making the effort for
Sunset, even if it's mostly tourney timing. Drop a personal ad in once in a while,
let us know you're still breathing! Congrats on the Duelmaster, too. -- Stik
Shaman -- Good to hear you speak up, too! I thought you were a different manager.
Sunset is my home arena, but I was inactive for most of the 90's and missed the
whole Dark Circle thing. In any case, I hope you'll stay active in the Arena of
Death and make Sunset proud with your tourney showings. Your new crop is looking
pretty good thus far, I eagerly await some matchups! -- Stik
Toker -- I guess you weren't kidding with Calpurnia! I smell rematch.... -- Stik
and G.F.
P.S. And what'd I say about that top team thing?!?!?? Geez!!!
Ultraist -- At last, the Sunset Hall of Fame debuts!! Nice spotlight to start it
off! The names of those warriors really bring back the memories! All of them were
fearsome opponents. I agree with all the nominees here. Teams as well. Some might
think it a bit presumptive to essentially nominate your own stable on the first
ballot, but it's not without merit on the points you bring up. The two managerial
choices are excellent picks as well, we're lucky to have one of them recently
returned and active (Damion, don't disappear this cycle!). They definitely embody
the spirit of our storied arena!
I used to communicate via snail mail with the Master of Anime, and I remember
calling Master Po on the phone one night, very nervous, as being all of 15 I'd never
contacted another manager directly before. He was an older, wiser college guy,
wound up talking with him for like three hours about DM. I felt honored, as he was
at the top of the arena and I at the bottom. I will have to spend some time dusting
off old newsletters and pondering some nominations! -- Stik
Hart Crane -- Hey, thanks for sticking around for four rounds of bloodfeud pounding!
Can't say we'd necessarily do the same facing multiple veteran challengers. Don't
tell me your manager has some of that whole "honor" thing going, does he? -- Tusk,
still grinning evilly and spitting tobacco at passersby
Nick -- Alas, the killer gets killed. Ain't it always the way? Hate to see a good
ripper bite it, but I won't apologize for it, either. You could BF with Djininski,
he seems to have old Tusk's number! -- Stik
Hey, I must have made enough good sacrifices to the RUGs on that last full moon,
they've actually been kind for a change! -- Stik, rubbing grubby hands together
eagerly....
Ghost of Germanius -- You know, I really didn't want to do that. Why didn't you
wear some armor? Or quit at the end of the first minute, while you were still
ahead. I'd've surrendered if you'd asked and I could sneak it past the arenamaster.
Rest in peace, and may you have a joyful rebirth. -- Rossmont, not a killer by
intent
Tusk -- You mammals are SHAMELESS! Carnivores, DUCK-ivores, every one of you. --
Ghost of Duckbert
Damn straight! -- Ed.
Fable -- Ahh, an olde familiare storie. -- Breakspere
P.S. I getten somm of mye best ideas from fables.
Abductor Magnus -- That went much better than I expected. I salute you for a worthy
opponent. -- Djininski
Cobb -- The things I go through for a spot in this repertoire company are
incredible, unreasonable, and really, really stupid. -- Baron Tone

We of the Desolate Empire Alliance want to welcome two managers to our fold. Kon of
the Empire Rising, and Osiris! May they be blessed with the blood of their enemies,
and give no quarter in War! -- Dark Knights of the Desolate Empire
11 April 2006
To all those lookin' for some easy pickins: I, Elfwine, manager of The Shallowship,
the most feared team in all of Jhelum, invite all who seek wide open spaces for pubs
and other such establishments of limited debauchery, to visit this deserted city and
help me clear up some of the dust. I'm just about ready to have my guys face off
against each other to get some new action. Guess I'd better join a tournament or
something...hmmmm, there's a thought.
