DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
I wonder, am I the oldest Duelmaster ever? No telling when Doc LeGrand pulled
me out of the clone tank, but it must have been in the early 1990s. Wonder how long
his attention span will last this time as Doc LeGrand has many incarnations in the
multiverse, Most recently as Visera, a level 60 ShadowPriestess on the Argent Dawn
server averaging 180 DPS in full shadowform. Ever the outsider Doc LeGrand (as
Visera) found frustration with the countless Dwarven Priests who considered Visera's
Vampiric Embrace Shadow Healing to be inferior to classic targeted healing spells.
While there are many meters to show effective healing in a raid, perceptions trumps
metrics. But since you cannot raid Molten Core and BlackWing Lair for purple toys by
yourself, there is a limit any one individual can experiment.
Prior to life in Azeroth Doc LeGrand spent years trying to bring order to the
chaos of Magic:TG tournaments. His organizations skills were unparalleled, his
attention to detail microscopic, his data entry equal to the task of PreReleases and
Southeast Regionals, his knowledge of the rules led to references as a "walking
encyclopedia", yet his ability to play with (as in suck up to) others was a fatal
flaw. WOTC is another organization that is obsessed with the top end of the game at
the expense of the lower levels that fuel the machine that supports the top end's
existence. He now understands the animosity that the local sheriff feels when the
FBI shows up in his town. Finally when the Two Headed Giant tournaments he was
running for more than a year was superseded by a "test group" from across the
continent, regardless of the MTGO fan base, Doc walked away.
So now Doc LeGrand spends his time on his own path, a web based game of Fantasy
Tactical Combat; a game that evolves by changing the database of environmental
variables rather than revising the rules. A game that fully discloses game mechanics
to let players focus on how to win rather than learning how to play. A team based
game instead of a "group of individuals". A web based game with daily turns instead
of 24 separate micro-turns that force attackers to set alarm clocks for when their
army returns in the middle of the night. An open ended campaign game that is
organized into seasons like the NFL or MLB where winning that season matters and the
best talent is promoted from High School to College to the Pros. Where the NCAA
tournament holds prestige but does not make conference play irrelevant. A game where
player input makes a difference on the direction of game development.
(Man, can he ever ramble. If you want to hear more of this stuff go ahead and
contact DekeYoung@Comcast.net, meanwhile back to Sunset matters.)
Since the Cardinal could not put up any resistance to Reganomics, I got the shot
to excel and put down Bonedust in a single blow to the throat. I made the mistake of
gloating, because Bonedust wimped out to the Arenamaster before I could separate his
head from his shoulders. I suppose that the true Delarquan way is to finish the job,
so I am challenging him again and we will see what happens this time. Here in Sunset
there is no judge other than the blood on the sands.
Sunset has a long history of death. The Avians have 45 dead warriors, not
counting the 7 clones sent straight to the Dark Arena. Doc LeGrand is going to
reanimate RoadRunner, Sandhill Crane, Gallant Gull, Regal Raven and Topaz Tern for
the dead tournament. Sunset was always his favorite team. Of course all of us
living Avians are going as well, even if we die this turn. If the Grouse dies on the
sands that will be good news for me, since I should be able to bloodfeud until I get
my invite.
Nice to be on the throne, hopefully I get to gloat some more next turn. If not,
I do not deserve the title.

SPY REPORT
Good day, in SUNSET a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets poor.
So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. It seems the training can make the
difference, as D.R.I. is pushed out of top team by NOMADIC TRIBE, who came from 4th
with a 3-1-0 this turn. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are
sorrows to drown for LIGHT BRIGADE, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them by 4 into
16th. DOC LEGRAND'S AVIANS stable has parlayed this turn's 3-2-0 into a 4 space move
up the rankings. This brings them up to 2nd place. Good work, guys! The NOMADIC
TRIBE guild has had a 3-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never
know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, VERGIL fought SHERWOOD and
gained 19 points and contributed to EQUITES VIRTUS' 3-2-1. SHERWOOD has lost to
VERGIL, falling 15 points, while helping make LITERATE LOONS a 2-3-0 turn. Defending
his title for another turn, FLAMING FLAMINGO kept LITERATE LOONS' warrior, HART
CRANE, from claiming the throne. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from
unimpeachable sources that Cagliostro's Castle uses trolls in their stew. Talk about
gristle!
I tell you, a green quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling. A basher
friend of mine assures me this is true. I also notice that the GRIM FANDANGO stable
was the most avoided team this turn. Come on SUNSET, what are you afraid of? And
guess who avoided GRIM FANDANGO stable the most? Believe it or not, it was NOMADIC
TRIBE. Anyone surprised? The most challenged warrior this turn was KANO CLAN's
warrior MOMORO WA. More fighters challenged him than challenged the Duelmaster! In
a brave attempt, HAMSUN from LITERATE LOONS challenged up 25 points to fight NERVE
RAKER from the NOMADIC TRIBE stable. HAMSUN perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as
he defeated NERVE RAKER and ended up with 48 recognition points. VULGE of GRIM
FANDANGO had better have a good reason for challenging down 9 points in a challenge
which he won. I thought VULGE showed great skill and promise when he subdued CONRAD.
All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? Cagliostro's Castle declares a free round for BONEFACE and all of
RAGING LORDS, for having revenged D.R.I.'s GENGHIS TRON for killing one of their
comrades. A brave warrior does not carry a red shield, he has nothing to cover or
hide when the fight is over. Consider well.
Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare
to fight bravely. Well, I'm burning daylight here in SUNSET and I've a long road
ahead of me. Happy Trails. Until you see my quill in SUNSET again, farewell--
Alarond the Scribe

*Turf War IV Rules*
Everyone may participate; known alliances, new alliances, or temporary alliances
created to compete in the Turf War! However, to participate, each alliance must:
A. Announce the alliance and the Captain of the alliance in the North Fork (DM
47) newsletter.
Captains are responsible for:
a. verifying those who wish to participate under the banner of their alliance;
b. distribution of prizes should their alliance win the Turf War.
Managers must:
a. Submit one (1) RSI Roll-Up Gift Certificate to participate to:
Baphomet, mgr. Knights Templar (568), DM 47 -- North Fork, or
Rick Stringer
13 St. Michael's CT
Elkton, MD 21921
b. Announce their intent to compete with manager name, team name and alliance
they will be fighting under in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter.
Rules:
1. No scoring will begin until a Gift Cert is received. No exceptions.
2. Before a manager can compete, he/she must declare and be verified by the
Captain of the alliance he/she has claimed for;
3. Only one (1) team per player may compete. NO multiple aliases please.
Violations will result in disqualification.
4. The contest will begin on the turn following the January F2F and run for 12
turns.
5. The turn a declaration and verification will begin the scoring process.
6. No declarations or verifications will be accepted after Turn 10 of the Turf
War 5.
7. For the purpose of scoring, I reserve the right to make all final decisions.
Scoring:
Win Loss Kill Die
Challenge +2 -2 +5 -5

-10 will be given to the team who violates this.
Special Conditions:
a. I reserve the right for all final decisions.
b. If I make a mistake, I'll multiply the points by 2.
c. If you claim I did, and *YOU* are wrong, I'll subtract points at the rate of

d. Each alliance begins with zero (0) points.
e. Dark Arena may be used on the first turn of every warrior with no penalty
(this means a warrior with 0 FE).
f. TVs won after the contest begins gain a 25 point one time score once the
tourney reports are posted in the NL.
g. TCs won after the contest begins gain a 50 point one time score with the
same conditions as noted for TVs.
h. NO switching alliance once verified by an alliance that a team has declared
for.
i. Only 7 teams are permitted per alliance for the Turf War 5.
PRIZES:
Turf Wars are a "Winner Takes All" type contest. All prizes and 100% of the RU
Certs will be given to the Captain of the winning alliance and it is his/her
responsibility to give these to the alliance membership.
I have requested from RSI the following:
a. renaming of the orth Fork (DM 47) arena;
b. renaming of Dark Arena Monsters;
c. known favourite rhythms for one warrior on each team of the winning
alliance. This warrior would be in the Initiates or above brackets on the
last turn of the Turf War (they must have at least one arena fight to
receive this award).
Baphomet, Host of TW5
Special Note: A downchallenge is considered from a higher bracket to a lower
bracket. Same bracket, more recognition points? Not a downchallenge!
20 October 2006
In accordance with those rules set forth by the Lady of the Realm, I hereby announce
the formation of a small group of managers calling themselves "The Outsiders". The
group consists of the following members:
Doc LeGrande
Apex
Street Legal
Carnage
Ghoti
Roadkill
Valamond
This group has only one rule. Respect the play of the managers of this
alliance. We have no worries about not playing by the rules set forth by others. We
fight the way we like, and all those in this group appreciate what tools each manager
brings. We have managers from the Delarquan, Andorian and Free Blade regions. We
have managers that focus on the tournament arenas, and we have those that focus on
the regular city arenas. We have those in our ranks that fight with honor and
respect for all, and we have those that have a bloodlust that cannot be quenched.
Our goal is simple. To create a ensemble of managers that will show their
prowess in the land of Alastari, and to bring a new level of competition to all those
that share the sands with our warriors. Our warriors are many throughout the land.
We have no home arena. We have no pacts we abide by. Our fighters range from
Mordant to Talcama, from Lapur to Lyratilan, Aruak City to Valamantis, the Primus
arena to Talahya, and many more arenas throughout the land.
Whether we are sought out or ignored makes no difference to us. We are what we
are. We fight how we fight. And we do it however we wish. We have no rules. We
have no leader or ruler. Be prepared. We are.
20 October 2006
The Dark Knights of the Desolate Empire respond thus to the Avengers of the Light:
Where are you? EACH AND EVERY Dark Knight can be found in arenas 31 and 52. Your
pretty words mean less than nothing if you won't fight. EVERY Dark Knight is more
than willing to back up their talk. So...we give you three turns in either 31 or 52,
REPEAT 31 or 52 to show up or shut up. If you don't show we'll let all of Alastari
know the Avengers are indeed cowards! -- Dark Knights of the Desolate Empire
