Notes from the arena champ.
Shhh, quiet. And if you see some geek looking guy in a white lab coat, act like I
was not talking to you. Doc LeGrand has been really cranky since the tournament. He
was used to being a winner and our team was anything but winners last time. This got
off to a bad start when The Cardinal walked onto the sands to start the Challenger's
tournament and never came back. Yes, our first warrior died in our first fight, not
a good portent of things to come.
I have to be quiet since I turned in a bagel at 0-2 in the Champions tournament
against Cunning Prince 82-26936 and Juniper 82-33234. Notice that both of these guys
were from Arena 82. Cunning Prince has an arena record of 6-1-0, 46 and Juniper has
a record of 6-4-0, 66 which leads me to believe that neither of the guys fights
anywhere but at tournaments. They were fast and I was meat. I did not ever get to
swing in either fight.
Blessed Bluejay also went 0-2, losing to Margarita 1-7025 and SoulSnare 82-37248.
Doesn't anyone from a regular arena go to these tournaments?
Vengeful Vulture did manage to get a win, going 2-3. The Vulture won against
Wolverine from arena 42, and Blitzkrieg from arena 25. Then reality set in and he
lost to Toad from arena 82, Rickon from Arena 60 and Red Fission from arena 82. Was
everyone in the tournament from arena 82? What are guys with 2-0-1 and 2-2-0 records
doing in the Initiates tournament anyway?
Grey Grouse went 0-2 as well. I think his days are numbered because I have seen Doc
LeGrand measuring his loft in the team cage, never a good sign, Not as bad as when
you see him taking tissue samples off the local fauna, but still a bad sign. I
suppose the samples taken from a Robin are for Cordial Cardinal's replacement, but if
you ask me the Grouse is next.
I am avoiding the 13-3 Aimed Blow from Age of Empires this turn. Let him play with
one of the lungers instead. Meanwhile I will be happy to draw a NPC, grab some more
Political Points and escape before Doc LeGrand cleans out my cage too.
Crap, here he comes. Go ask him some questions and pretend like you were just
watching me train.
[A tall, malnourished man with dark glasses and a lab coat walks up, a clear look of
disdain on his face. He scratches a new note on a well worn tablet and looks
dejectedly at his team.]
I remember when the tournaments were a distraction, now it seems like the arenas are
the distraction. I think the emphasis should be on working with what you have,
making the most of the replacements you get. But obviously that is not how the
current economics are today. You know if it were me, I would run the tournaments as
a separate system, to compare warriors from different arena, not a system to
themselves. With all the magic at her disposal I do not see why Sheila Greywand
could not run the tournaments as a separate reality with no development and no real
impact on the regular arena. And the prize for winning should be winning itself, not
some tools to help someone else win.
And if it were me I would send the whole team in to combat at the same time. But
then again, that would seem like an entirely different game.

SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly SUNSET games. There were bitter words at FEEBLE
LEGION's guildhouse after a 0-0-0 showing this week which dropped the stable into
15th. Dark Arena anyone? Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the
corner! Witness how this week LAKOTA went 4-0-0 to move up 7 in the rankings.
BONEDUST caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully
bested VIOLENT PACIFICATION and was awarded 19 points in recognition. In one of the
week's more notable duels, WEST WIND put down XAPHAN, causing him to lose 13 points
of recognition in the process. The city has turned out in honor of SWIMMING, for
with its arena victory it may now lay claim to the highest position in the city!
Informants "close" to the city champion have told me that he never fights without
pantyhose on beneath his armor. Watch out!
Many and various are the arts of battle. In SUNSET "art" is a word that has
long since passed from the language! SUNSET, city of gladiators! Mighty among the
names of thy guilds is AGE OF EMPIRE, a guild shunned and avoided by many in the
weekly duels. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard pressed to
find any of D.R.I. last week. Busy avoiding AGE OF EMPIRE? Loose talk at the arena
has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after
CROW BAR. Watch your back! CALPURNIA must really be harboring a grudge against the
LITERATE LOONS guild! Merciless, 18 challenged down HART CRANE points this week to
duel with she. All the city knows the duel went in favor of CALPURNIA. I shall not
fail to spread the word in other cities of this "mighty" victory.
What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality? Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune
but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
The girls are as pretty in SUNSET as ever I remembered them....and the fighters
as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed
a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!

Doc LeGrand -- Nice column, quite the personal history. In response to a comment of
yours elsewhere, I believe Sunset was originally nicknamed the "Arena of Death"
because of the introductory story printed on turn 1 of the arena (which I still
have), in which the local King was forced to kill off all the gladiators to appease
the angry gods. But they didn't mind them bringing in a new crop not long after!
Thus the arena began! Others have claimed on the D2 boards not long back that our
arena and at least one other, Arvat I believe, have slightly higher "kill ratios"
coded in. Don't know if that really holds water, but history seems to support it. --

Well, too late to get in a good luck wish to everyone in Sunset for the tourney, but
here it is anyway! I only sent in one from the active squad, and one dead.
Hopefully someone will step up and represent. You know, for having such a storied
history and a formidable reputation, we really have very little representation in
ADM, which is a travesty! I'm doing what I can with limited funds, and I know
Ultraist just gave up on his ADM crew. Let's see what we can do about this, guys....

In accordance with those rules set forth by the Lady of the Realm, I hereby announce
the formation of a small group of managers calling themselves "The Outsiders". The
group consists of the following members:
Doc LeGrande
Apex
Street Legal
Carnage
Ghoti
Roadkill
Valamond
This group has only one rule. Respect the play of the managers of this
alliance. We have no worries about not playing by the rules set forth by others. We
fight the way we like, and all those in this group appreciate what tools each manager
brings. We have managers from the Delarquan, Andorian and Free Blade regions. We
have managers that focus on the tournament arenas, and we have those that focus on
the regular city arenas. We have those in our ranks that fight with honor and
respect for all, and we have those that have a bloodlust that cannot be quenched.
Our goal is simple. To create a ensemble of managers that will show their
prowess in the land of Alastari, and to bring a new level of competition to all those
that share the sands with our warriors. Our warriors are many throughout the land.
We have no home arena. We have no pacts we abide by. Our fighters range from
Mordant to Talcama, from Lapur to Lyratilan, Aruak City to Valamantis, the Primus
arena to Talahya, and many more arenas throughout the land.
Whether we are sought out or ignored makes no difference to us. We are what we
are. We fight how we fight. And we do it however we wish. We have no rules. We
have no leader or ruler. Be prepared. We are.

pretty words mean less than nothing if you won't fight. EVERY Dark Knight is more
