                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

It is quite a view from the top. Zig told me it would be, but until you have
seen it with your own eyes, it is hard to believe. All those little warriors
standing around below me....
It was a nice career here in Sunset for Djininski. Graduation details are
always interesting--a nice chance to see who you were really facing. Sometimes it is
hard to tell under those opera outfits. Congrats on your graduation and enjoy the
sequel to your career here.
As for Vulge and his Borrible friends, I am afraid I missed the memo about
leaving the throne open for you. Perhaps if you had made such a suggestion before
the turn was fought I could have honored your request? As it is, I am now honor
bound to defend the throne to the best of my somewhat-limited abilities. Hopefully
you can at least manage to hang around the Challenger Champs for a bit to pick up
those pesky points two at a time. Good luck with that.
Has anyone seen a short guy named Boris hanging around the arena?

-- Bullwinkle J. Moose, Duelmaster of Sunset

Stay tuned for next turn's episode. Will it be "The Scarlett Doily?" Or will it be
"The Great Moose Hunt?" Stay tuned to find out!

                                      SPY REPORT

Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in SUNSET this turn, and let's start
with a look at some of the teams. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there
are sorrows to drown for LITERATE LOONS, whose 2-3-0 this turn dropped them by 5 into
9th. SEA DOGS stable has parlayed this turn's 4-1-0 into a 3 space move up the
rankings. This brings them up to 5th place. Good work, guys! The BAD BEAT guild
has had a 4-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where
this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, MAST MONKEY fought ZIGGY WOLFSBANE and
gained 20 points and contributed to SEA DOGS' 4-1-0. ASSASSIN has lost to URSA
MINOR, falling 15 points, while helping make LIGHT BRIGADE a 2-3-0 turn. The
attempts to dethrone the Duelmaster have failed, and BULLWINKLE remains SUNSET's top
warrior for another turn. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team
makes their losing fighters do dishes at Cagliostro's Castle until they win. Maybe?
The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more
could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. NOMADIC TRIBE has cause to stand
tall, as they were SUNSET's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team
to beat. And guess who avoided NOMADIC TRIBE stable the most? Believe it or not, it
was GRIM FANDANGO. Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that NEVERMOOR
from GRIM FANDANGO was SUNSET's most challenged warrior this turn. In a brave
attempt, DUDE from BAD BEAT challenged up 19 points to fight BALZAC from the LITERATE
LOONS stable. DUDE perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he was bested by BALZAC
and ended up with 16 recognition points. STAY GOLD of GRIM FANDANGO had better have
a good reason for challenging down 15 points in a challenge which he won. I thought
STAY GOLD showed great skill and promise when he defeated REED. All right, so I
slept through it! Big deal!
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. Congratulations go out to LIGHT
BRIGADE, with CANNON FODDER revenging a bloodfeud against HAMMETT of LITERATE LOONS.
Cagliostro's Castle declares a free round for GRIFTER and all of BAD BEAT, for having
revenged KANO CLAN's MEGA ROKU for killing one of their comrades. We'd like to
remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies.  You know who you are;
and it's considered rude.
I like this place, SUNSET, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls.
Who could ask for more? Well, I'm burning daylight here in SUNSET and I've a long
road ahead of me. Happy Trails. Until you see my quill in SUNSET again, farewell--
Alarond the Scribe

Fred -- Although you did manage to defeat me once, in general I would suggest not
speaking out loudly until you get that record up a bit. -- Ursa Minor

Balzac -- Say hello to the initiates again. -- Ursa Minor

Reserve Guard -- Nice fight. It makes me wonder. Are you one of Woody's experiments
again? Six minutes was a nice demonstration of endurance. -- Dante

Assassin -- Ok, the loss I almost expected. I knew when I challenged you that I
would have a shot, but that your vast experience edge would make it difficult, and so
it was. But don't you think you could have taught me more than one stinking skill?
That was supposed to be the payoff for a risky challenge! -- Tengri Khan

Captain Billy -- Glad you're back. I guess we can look forward to plenty of colorful
ads again. Just remember when making your challenges, Loons are always good targets.
-- Ziggy and his Tribemates

Bullwinkle -- I hand on to you the title of Sunset's top gladiator. Wear it in good
health and all that sort of thing. And if you ever fancy a job dancing, check with
our group. Madam Butterfly's always on the lookout for a tall man who can hold a
woman off the ground and make it look easy. I'm retiring, or at least taking a long
vacation. -- Djininski

Dick -- Tedious when you turn my name and signature move against me. -- Breakspere
P.S. I suspect that my gods have it in for me. Too much gristle in the last
offering, perhaps?

Dude -- Good heavens! (I'm practicing my cooth.) You shouldn't be breathing heavily
by the end of the first minute. Some fights take longer, you know! Wind sprints,
that's what you need. I have quite a pleasant route laid out through the town, with
cafes at the resting points, if you'd like to try it? -- Rossmont

Reed -- Drat. I was warned that some male gladiators would take an excessive
interest in my chest. I didn't think I was that, um, prominent, after all, I'm not
an orc. But I can see that I need to forget underwires and go with the solid steel
bra. -- Merry Leona

Graham -- Huh. Other singers have told me that dwarves don't appreciate music and
the physical plant it takes to produce a really good voice heard in the farthest
seats, but I just didn't believe them. How can anyone not appreciate music? It
seems perverse. -- Baron Tone

Grim Fandango -- Thank you. -- Djininski

Ziggy -- Actually, my thing is dancing, and I'm sure the Isle is not the place for
it. Too crowded, and most of the people there are, let's face it, jocks. --
Djininski

Ursa Minor -- I am yours to command. -- Djininski

                                 Order of Lost Souls

Where there is a beginning, there is an end. Where there is a whole, there is a
part. Where there is light, there is dark. All these are found to be true and along
with the most important, when something is lost it can always be found.
Many a person has walked this land in one form or another. Some truly believe
that here is there and there is here but who really knows? Among the peoples of this
great land many have felt lost in time and in place. Some have gone as far as to be
lost of soul....
Although most are thought to have been born into this world in a mortal way, no
one can be sure. Life is something they have in a way but a torturous joke to them
in all others. They live in a sense as they are here and now and having mind and
knowledge. They are flesh and blood of one sort of another. They cast a shadow as
all things living do. Blood courses through their veins.
These beings have become wraiths drifting here and there, knowing that they
truly belong nowhere. Searching for that one thing that they seem to be missing or
the one thing in them that puts them beyond others. These people have become masters
of many things as time seems to have no hold. For not even time can find those that
are truly lost. Many of these beings have drifted toward the gladiatorial games. In
the blood and chaos of the arenas something holds them like no other. It's the loss
of something they have never had or something they had so long ago it seems to have
never been. LIFE.
A few of the more shall we say "human" of these beings have settled into many
arenas around the land. The loss of life and the crazed emotions of the arenas
giving them glimpses of things they longed for but seemed incapable of attaining.
A number of these lost ones saw in each other something that might be able to
help the other. They spent many a day traveling to and fro, for what is time to one
who it doesn't touch. The more time they spent together the more they seemed to
change. No one noticed the change in the others but each recognized it in himself.
Years passed and the changes stopped. Each had been changed in different ways but
all felt more whole. A discussion ensued between them. They came to a realization
that in each other they had found parts of themselves that had been missing. Then
came the next thought. If they could find more of like minded lost ones they might
eventually find what they always wanted, their true selves.
The group settled down to think things through. They finally came up with an
idea they all could accept. They would form an organization that through their
arenas through out the land they would seek out other lost ones. If they were of
like mind they would be invited to join the group and seek that special something
they all desired.
This was how it began and how it still is. The Order of Lost Souls was formed
and the search began. The original members numbered six. They were Baphomet,
Blackstorm, Hammer, JGW, Reaper and Wretch. These members of the Order spread their
gladiator stables through out the realm seeking others like them. Through blood and
death they lived through others. One day hoping to live for themselves. For as they
all know what is lost must eventually be found....

CALLING ALL THUGS, BRUTES, OGRES, QUARTER HALF WITS, SHALLOW HALBERD ENTHUSIASTS AND
MAUL RATS: Since the Bashing style has often been maligned in the forums, it is time
to give the style a little tough love with the following concept: An ALL-BASHER
arena. The rules are simple--enter the arena as a rookie basher. That's it. RSI
said I need to get 20 managers on board and I'm about half way there. If you are
interested in taking part, PM me in the forums or email me: chase at accesspr.com
and put D2 in the subject header.

ATTENTION EVERYONE -- In March I am going to do manager lists for all arenas. This
is part of my ongoing and undoubtedly largely futile attempt to get my lists
organized. If you think I might not know who you are or if you think I might and
you'd rather I not share that information, let me know this month! You can e-mail
me at Sue at solberg dash mathews dot com (replacing the at, dash and dot with
appropriate characters. You can send a diplo to The Saint. You can put an ad in
the newsletter. Semaphore doesn't work so well, nor does telepathy. -- The Saint,
