TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Blood on a Purple Robe: A Bloodgames Primer
by One Armed Bandit
Twice a year, there is a great gathering. These tiny men with their stained
clothing and great intellects do not look like your traditional gladiators, but they
will meet and compete for a chance at Duel-2 immortality. No, no, I'm not talking
about the managers at the Face-to-Face. I'm talking about the murderous dwarves of
the Bloodgames.
It's probably the worst advertised event in Duel-2 history. It happens twice a
year, in January and July, and you don't have to fly across the country to
participate. For some, the Bloodgames are just a distant memory of a t-shirt that
never arrived, newer managers may have never even heard of it. For others, though,
it is a way of life. And it can be yours, too.
The cost: $10 to roll up the team, $49 to run them. At each Face-To-Face
tourney, two Bloodgames arenas are run. One of them (called the FtF Bloodgames) gets
run round-by-round for ten rounds, and warriors are allowed to change their
strategies, avoid, and make Bloodfeud challenges. For the other arena (called the
Mail-In Bloodgames), there are no bloodfeuds or avoids and each warrior must use the
same strategy and train for all ten rounds. You can participate in both even if you
don't attend the FtF, but you'll be at a slight disadvantage in the FtF Bloodgames
(the Mail-In Bloodgames is a perfectly level playing field).
The teams: Each team consists of TEN warriors, one of EACH style. You can
design each warrior however you want, as long as the stats add up to 84 points and no
stat is lower than a 3 or higher than a 21 (referred to as DYOs or design-your-own
warriors). Simply write down the following information on a piece of paper and mail
it to RSI (or email it to csr@reality.com): your name, your account number, the words
"Mail-In Bloodgames" or "FtF Bloodgames", the team name, and all ten warriors (name,
style, gender, ST-CN-SZ-WT-WL-SP-DF). If you submit them early enough you will
probably get a chance to see the overviews before sending in strategies for each of
them (using a normal strategy sheet, remember only one strategy and one train for the
entire event). If you want to play it safe, however, you can submit strategies along
with the team information, just write "NEW" in each of the Warrior ID spots and
either "MI BG" or "FTF BG" in the Game # spot. Some managers who are especially
ambitious will roll up each team more than once, and look over the overviews to
determine which team had the best luck in the roll-up process. Just remember, it
costs $10 each time you roll them up.
The rules: So what's the catch? $59 for 10 design-your-own warriors? Not so
fast, buddy. At the end of ten rounds, the top three warriors of different styles
from each arena will be granted immortality, trained up to the minimum ADM
requirements, and will graduate to ADM. Every other warrior will be gone forever.
Executed, freed, or retired to a quiet life on the farm like your childhood dog
Buster, if that helps you sleep at night. If the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ranked warriors
are a LU, a WS, and an AB, then those three will win the prizes. However, if the
1st, 2nd, and 3rd ranked warriors are a LU, a LU, and a WS, the 2nd place LU is out
of luck, his prize will drop down to the highest ranking member of a style that isn't
LU or WS. So what does it take to be one of the top ranked warriors? Warriors are
ranked based on number of kills, first and foremost, with their record and
recognition points being the tie breakers. Oh, did I mention that the chances of
dying are FIVE TIMES that of a normal arena?
What to expect: You will run into many opponents who are SZ 3, who have 21 WT
and 21 WL, who are using a 10 KD and aiming for the vitals, who are using unusual
weapons that Duel-2 folklore says have a greater chance of delivering that killing
blow, such as the Battle Axe. You may run into such classic archetypes as the 17-3-
3-21-21-8-11 ST or the 17-16-3-3-21-3-21 AB.
So why should you play? There are many reasons. You don't have to feel guilty
about killing your friend's warrior, for starters, because that's the whole
objective. Unique kill text make it all the sweeter, too. You won't see anyone get
"pierced completely through" or "skewered through their vital organs" anywhere else
(at least I hope not). Not only is it exciting to read, but my most rewarding
warrior came from the Bloodgames and yours could, too. Whether you are a tournament
player or an arena player, if your warrior is tough enough to survive the Bloodgames,
he's tough enough for whatever task you set him to. My first Bloodgames graduate was
a warrior named Sushi Slinger of Sea Dogs: 17-3-3-21-21-12-7 SL. He left Old
Valamantis with a 10-0-3 record and immortality. Since then, he has been a
Tournament Victor in the Freshman tourney, a Runner-Up in the ADM tourney, and a
three-time Tournament Victor in the Eligibles tourney. He is now fighting in Primus
against the best of the best and holding his own. Your Bloodgames graduate could
join him in Primus, too.
"Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe.
Dare to fight bravely." - Alarond the Scribe

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Stik leaned back in his chair at the team table his warriors were seated at in
the Broken Bone Tavern, scratched his grizzled, graying beard, and could not repress
a small smile of satisfaction before he took another draught off his ale tankard.
Success such as the turn they had just pulled off was hard to come by in Sunset these
days, with competition being more fierce than ever. All five gladiators had emerged
victorious, they had gotten four of their five challenges through, had pulled three
awards, and one of the crew had taken the throne. He glanced over at that particular
fighter, who was at present being ribbed mercilessly (by Mersilus) for being forced
to drink his ale through a straw, since his helm had gotten so dented in from the
former DM's strikes that they were having no small trouble removing it.
"I'm telling you, it's a good look for you, Wallace! You should really think
about keeping it just like it is!" Mersilus laughed as the new Duelmaster indignantly
turned in his seat to glare balefully at his stablemate out of the single eye hole
that still lined up.
"Yeah, veeerrrrryyy funny, ha freakin' HA!! If you ever get a shot at the
throne we'll see how you do, barely-over-.500-boy!" Wallace shot back, his high
voice echoing around in his helm like a tin can.
"Look at it this way, Wally," chimed in Blaksunn, "You wouldn't have to make any
changes for your costume come Hallow's Eve, mask already on!"
"Yeah, he'll scare less kids that way than if he showed them his real face!"
added Rezurekt, and the table roared with laughter.
Stik banged his empty mug down and the team quieted, sensing he was about to
speak.
"All right, nicely done, ladies! Now, what are we gonna do to keep helmet-head
here on the throne another turn? He needs to rack up some political points any way
he can, or he's NEVER going to graduate! Who's gonna run interference for him?"
The table was silent except for Wallace's breathing as they all looked at each
other.
"Don't look at me!" piped up the newest member, Blakskul. "I'm just an
initiate!"
"Yeah, STILL..." responded Rezurekt. Blaksunn snorted derisively.
Stik looked with some disgust at the other three. "If and when any of you other
losers get the throne, you'll want the same from your teammates below you if at all
possible. Remember, this game is all about--"
"Matchups, we KNOW..." cut it Mersilus, rolling his eyes as he tried to catch
the serving maid for another round.
"That's right, my boy," said the Old Man back. "Don't forget it. I've spoken
to Nomad and word is he's contempating a bloodfeud attempt on Cather, so that
eliminates one problem." Wallace breathed a very audible, metallic sigh of relief.
"What about the other aimer? Mersilus, I think your challenge goes there, you've had
close fights with him before."
Mersilus grumbled something obscene into his ale and nodded in acceptance.
"The other problem is the striker at the top," added Stik. "Blakky, I have to
say he's yours this time out. Good luck."
"I'll need it most likely," said the waste somewhat gloomily.
"Rezurekt, not much you can do yet where you're at. I think you should go Loon
hunting..." Stik grinned.
The big slasher returned the grin. "It HAS been a while!"
"What about me?" asked Blakskul, wanting to be included in the strategizing.
Stik regarded him for a moment. "Just try not to lose or die, all righty?
Good."
The new Duelmaster raised his hands in the air at this point in a hello-what-
about-me? look and stared at the old manager from his eye hole.
"Oh yeah, you," Stik grinned. "Hmm, don't know if the other TPs gonna fight at
night or at all. I think you should just as well keep that bucket afixed to your
noggin, maybe a few more hits from that damned smurf will knock it clean off for you,
save us the trouble!"
Wallace dropped his head and hands on the table with a loud clang as everyone
else roared anew with laughter. Lucinda, the head serving girl, arrived with fresh
drinks at that moment. It's good to be on top in Sunset, thought Stik. Yes, indeed!
SPY REPORT
Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out SUNSET to see
what's new. Uncool, FIZBANS FOLLIES. I mean 0-4-0 is bad. Will they will be
allowed to fight? I say use 'em for training practice! The guys at OMINOUS REIGN
like really pulled together to get a 4-1-0 this turn, moving up by 7. Cut this out
and put it in your scrapbooks, THE RED BLADES! 'Cause they got 5-0-0 and moved up to
2nd! I just can't say enough good things about 420 B.C.. They went 4-1-1 their
first time, don't slouch, and they've got good oral hygiene! MVP award for BORGES?
LITERATE LOONS' proud of him after beating DANG CHAO and getting 21 points. Talk
about yer major upsets! DANG CHAO's match with BORGES cost him a loss of 20 points!
Oh, wow, like the Duelmaster must be the most popular guy in all SUNSET. He got the
most challenges. (But what about proposals?) And I was just getting used to the
ex-Duelmaster's habit of...(!) Oh well, welcome WEASEL. Aren't OMINOUS REIGN proud.
(Oh, my.) Is the Duelmaster really being a real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me!
Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? DARK AT HEART was SUNSET's most
avoided team. Is there some award for that? Is there some deep dark secret why GRIM
FANDANGO's been avoiding DARK AT HEART so much? Or is it just that they're too
scared? Ooh! Did BLAKSUNN really know what he was doing when he challenged SILVER
SMURFER? A 17-6-0 speaks volumes. (Zontoni said that. I don't know what it means.)
SILVER SMURFER overcame BLAKSUNN, and was I surprised (right!). But its a good thing
SILVER SMURFER could stop laughing long enough to give BLAKSUNN a good pounding.
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? How cruel! DARK AT HEART heartlessly sent his to FAMINE certain fate in
the Dark Arena. Is a 14-8-0 bad or something? Hey, warriors get killed by other
warriors, not by their manager sending them to the Dark Arena. What's wrong with
FAMINE's 14-8-0, DARK AT HEART? Hey! Quit laughing! Just because BIG KEVIN had
9-5-0 was no reason for BEN'S BAZAAR to send him to the Dark Arena! Stop it!
Everyone has problems, but why did BEN'S BAZAAR send BIG KEVIN to the Dark Arena? He
had a 9-5-0, and I thought he looked neat on the sands... Fight, fight, fight. Is
that all you guys can do?
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really should stop. Its
been really albendranius! Later, guys-- Debby Tonte

PERSONAL ADS
Blakskul -- Wryleth will not be trying much of anything any longer. He simply did
not have the mettle to survive in this game, so I am "letting him go." -- Daemonspawn
Ruin -- Great fight! I'm still at a loss to how you parried that one thrust, or how
you managed to win, but still, it was a great fight. -- Moriden
Well, it seems the RUGS were not as busy as had been expected. Both Sasquatch and
Graven Ward return from the night fights! Congratulations to the survivors, you have
earned your reprieve at the expense of Mr. Twister. Cosmo was not so lucky. He
shall be replaced by Walli Weeble. Now let the Tribe get back to winning some
fights! -- Nomad
Big Kevin -- I know my record isn't that good. Okay, it is bad. But I'd like to
think I'm better than my record shows. At the very least, I appear to better than
your record. That was an interesting strategy anyway. -- Bul Kevinhewer
Elise Isla -- Are you in the opera?! Perhaps you could sing a song about the
beginning of my career? Okay, so it isn't very glorious yet, but the wise men in my
hometown always said that everybody has to start somewhere, and this is my start.
And just think, you were there! -- Pikritori
Sasquatch -- Yah, I knew you'd... I mean, damn, you made it back. -- Weasel
Virile Man -- Weeaaaseel power! -- Weasel
Blaksunn -- Bah, I guess you had me figured out for some time; I think I need a tune
up. -- Ice
Mersilus -- (pout) -- Angel
One too many -- Does your name refer to multiple personalities? If so one or more,
it doesn't matter, it was enough, evidently! -- Wild
Arena -- It's been really fun watching the fighting at the top these last few turns.
This isn't a pushover arena. Grats on the title, Stik. Is the culling of the Abs
done yet, hehe. I always have a backup AB as a sacrifice to the DM gods. They will
not be denied. Picked on, nah, that's the name of the game. =P -- Archelf
Belatedly, the personals for turn 636:
Mersilus -- Damn, you're well-named in a sneaky way. -- Jonisson
Darkness -- You were supposed to FALL. -- Selia Dove
Borges -- I could've done without that. -- Ghost of Kerbestam
Worm Food -- What's the point of feeding worms? It gives them ideas. -- Ramon Lalo
Ophelia Delphi -- I hate short, delicate women who come along and make me feel over
grown. And when I hate, I get, ah, heavy-handed. So watch out. -- Elise Isla
P.S. Or grow taller.
Now, back to our regularly scheduled personals....
Borges -- You actually *had* an insurance policy? I've never seen that they were
worth the money, since the premiums for gladiators are so high. -- Jonisson
Fought Too Many -- Houseplants? Whatever for? -- Selia Dove
Pynchon -- Yes, well, we all have days like that, but I'm surprised to see it in an
opponent. -- Ramon Lalo
Pikritori -- Oh, right, come along and make me feel bad! Just for that, I won't help
you curl your beard. -- Elise Isla
Our congratulations to Famine. -- Jorja and the Sword Opera
Grandaddy Smurf -- ThankyousirmayIhaveanother?!?? -- DM Wallace
Ophelia Delphi -- You have my thanks, madam! -- Blakskul
Fizban -- Well, at least I gave you a much-needed breather from holding that top team
spot! :) -- Stik
You're all heart.
Sasquatch and Graven Ward -- Congrats on your survival! Fight on! -- Grim Fandango
A very sharp-edged, bloody, grinning welcome to all the new teams who (reportedly)
will be showing up this cycle! Enjoy your stay in the Jewel of the Delarquan
Federation. Blades UP!! -- Stik and Grim Fandanog
Disease -- I think my first challenge was avoiding me. Nice to see you again. --
Leni Poole
Sidewinder -- Nice. For you, I mean. Maybe GW shouldn't have took that loss so
hard. -- Lito
Blakskul -- Solid training plan, there. Does that come with spelling lessons? --
Ophelia
Millhauser -- I think I prefer the new weapon. Do you agree? -- Terra
Convicted Assassin -- Was that part of some plea deal? -- Yuedebahl Litha
I wish! -- C. Assassin
Lord Protector Famine -- Congratulations from The Red Blades
Wallace -- Congrats, Duelmaster--this way. -- Bill the Bard
Sorry no ads the past few turns. Here are a few I was working on for last turn. --
Bill the Bard
Smurf boy -- You shouldn't let a girl know that you're nervous about meeting her. It
worked out for you this time. I want to be top ST, so see you soon. -- Leni
Sasquatch -- Go figure. It's possible the strat tweak I made was entirely awesome...
-- Yuedebahl
Fought Too Many -- Wow, that was the absolute worst matchup you could have received.
But, you did well for never really being in the fight. Too bad you weren't training
skills. -- Terra
Elisa -- Well, I still can't disprove the old adage. No man is an isla. -- Ophelia
