Notes from the arena champ.
Well, I'm still here! On the throne, that is, and on this Island, not that
OTHER island. Red House taught me something, but not the right something. Come on,
dude, would a single init skill be too much to cough up?!?? I taught him a couple
things, not the least important of those being the lesson that you can be as fast and
cute as you want and flash that shiny scimitar around that everybody likes sooooo
much and make the crowd ooh and aah, but it's more important sometimes to be the guy
swingin' LAST, not first! Ha! I made him drop that pretty little scimitar, then I
dropped him, I did. I think the fans got their money's worth, in any case.
Hopefully, I'll be penning my farewell column next cycle, if all goes to plan,
and it always does in this game, right? Right... I'm challenging Dred this turn.
Congrats to the latest striker, Zoldivar, on his invite, I'm avoiding him, who knows,
maybe he'll fight the DA or won't fight at all, but no sense takin' chances. Blades

SPY REPORT
Hail and well met warriors of SUNSET! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes,
Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team 420 B.C. was unseated this
week as OMINOUS REIGN moved up from 6th ranking to take the top spot with a 3-2-1
record for the round. Fortune did not smile upon NOMADIC TRIBE this time out who
this turn suffered a fall into 10th position in the wake of a 2-3-0 round.
Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness how this week
DARK AT HEART went 4-1-0 to move up 6 in the rankings. My praise to LUDUS MAGNUS for
their 4-1-2 week this time out. Indeed, it was a skillfully fought round deserving
of notice! In one of the week's more notable duels, LEVEL OF MALEVOLENCE put down
NANNERPUSS, causing him to lose 17 points of recognition in the process. This time
out RED HOUSE made his bid for the throne as he challenged BLAKSKUL in an all out
contest of skill for possession of the title! Although RED HOUSE made a valiant
effort, it did not suffice to topple the reign of victorious BLAKSKUL. Informants
"close" to the city champion have told me that he never fights without pantyhose on
beneath his armor. Watch out!
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. SUNSET, city of gladiators!
Mighty among the names of thy guilds is 420 B.C., a guild shunned and avoided by many
in the weekly duels. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that
spent the better part of last week avoiding 420 B.C.. Indeed it was NOMADIC TRIBE.
Mighty fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. PAIN GWEN take
warning! You have more than a few enemies in SUNSET. I cannot but express pride for
the fearlessness of I SMOKED WHAT?!! who cast caution to the winds and challenged
PAIN GWEN, a fighter 40 points higher. Do not the gods reward courage? I SMOKED
WHAT?!! it was that claimed victory in the bout, while also rising 45 points in
recognition. A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems
that TISTHESEASON2BLETHAL posted a challenge against the more highly recognized WALLI
WEEBLE. The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand TISTHESEASON2BLETHAL won victory
over WALLI WEEBLE. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of steel. I can not
but mention with disdain the name of RAZE who this week posted a challenge to a
warrior a full 14 points below in the rankings. I thought RAZE showed great skill
and promise when he beat XIAN LIN. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality? I must report the passing of CHABON, veteran of many duels. 7-12-0
final record His was not illustrious--but death plays no favorites. I have seen
warriors die in youth. I have seen women cut down in their prime. This week BEN'S
BAZAAR must mourn the loss of 11-1-2 PAIN GWEN to COSMIC FREAK OUT. This week in
mortal passion I SMOKED WHAT?!! let the blood of PAIN GWEN, sending one more soul
into the void. Retribution by BEN'S BAZAAR seems inevitable! SALINGER must hold
silent, for this week he was humbled in the arena by a successful Bloodfeud won by
LENNY SPARK of THE RED BLADES. Hail LENNY SPARK for thy victory! My hearty
congratulations HIPPY LOVE, for thy revenge upon CC RIDER, slayer of thy fallen
comrade. Next time he will know better, eh? Dark alleys may hide both secrets and
assassins. In the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? Sadly warriors, now longer can I keep thy

So, how do the rest of you define a down-challenge? Most, I think, simply go by
recognition points. By that standard a 7 pt Kano challenging a 6 pt Blue is a down-
challenge. What else would it be? Somehow the Kano was ranked higher and it
challenged someone ranked lower. Thus a "down-challenge." Pretty simple. Some put
FE into the discussion, although I don't. But if that were the case, would it be a
down-challenge for Batwamba to go down in the ranks to fight the Kano TPs? They may
have had fewer points, but both had more total fights, more wins and a better win
percentage. So if the Kano challenge on the Blues was NOT a down-challenge, than
certainly Batwamba has never been guilty of such a thing. -- Nomad
