TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Returning to the Broken Bone after another victory in the arena I wait for the
mystery man to appear again but he does not show. Several more nights pass, and many
pints of Ale, and still no sign of him. Is it possible that he knows I have followed
him? Has he moved on? I have no idea but I will not rest until I am sure, this I
swear.
Then he walks into the bar and my mission is back on. He slinks over to the bar
and orders from the bartender and moves to the very end of the bar, almost in a
corner, and sits alone. His head is again covered with a Crimson cloak and I cannot
make out his face so I slide up to the bar at the opposite end to see if I can catch
a glimpse of what his cloak hides. However without making it obvious that I am
spying on him my attempt is a failure so I return to drink with my teammates.
I peer around the bar and take in the atmosphere to hide the fact that I keep
staring at the cloaked man. I see many familiar managers sitting with some of their
charges. Gentleben and Deep Thought sit near to me at seperate tables. As I peer
around I also notice Buri, Nomad, Daikkan, and Stormlord whose team members I have
faced through my long and winding career. Arch Elf is trying to teach one of his
team members a magic trick but the young warrior is far too drunk and keeps messing
it up. It almost feels like every manager in town is here drinking tonight but I
notice several are not. I spot veteran managers Stik and Crip in the corner going
mug for mug with quite a stockpile of empties on the floor littered around their
table. Nobody but me seems to even notice the target of my obsession.
Distracted momentarily as Crip falls loudly to the floor and Stik proclaims
victory by ordering yet another pint I catch the shadowy figure get up to leave. I
slam my mug to the table, grab hold of the hilt of my dagger with one hand, and get
up to leave. As he passes through the doorway I sprint to the door to follow and
peek around the corner of the doorway exiting the Broken Bone. He follows the same
path as the other night and I am determined to follow him closer this time. As he
turns the corner to the alleyway I dart as quickly as I can to peer around the side
of the building. As I look around the corner mere seconds after he passes it I am
sure he will not escape me this time.
A loud thud enters my ears and my head feels warm. Strangely my vision begins
to go dark. I fight it as hard as I can blinking rapidly and shaking my head but to
no avail. Darkness is all I see and my mind goes fuzzy then I hear a voice before
losing conciousness. "And what have we here?"

Well, what are you looking at, SUNSET? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Later days, THE BLUES, since TOON INN
took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. Now keep the taverns open
late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for TOOL SHED, whose 0-5-0 this turn
dropped them by 8 into 21st. Ha! TOON INN turned their 4-1-0 turn into a 1st place
rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists.
Now let's all watch RANDOM CHAOS' heads swell from their 4-1-0 this turn. Haa ha ha
ha! Big shots, big talk, big deal. SUNSET saw the first turn for THE CEREAL
KILLERS, a 4-1-1, and some teams are scared, others are too arrogant to notice. Take
note friends, take note. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see EVNMOR BLAK
win a fight and gain 25 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, EVNMOR BLAK beat FLAP JACK and
FLAP JACK lost 25 points. You're breakin' my heart. Looks like SUNSET has some guts
at least, SPOONFUL the Duelmaster was this turn's most-challenged warrior. SPOONFUL
challenged STOUT for SUNSET's Title this turn, and guess what happened? And if
variety is the spice of life, SUNSET may be getting bland, as SPOONFUL stays top dog
in the city. I'm not in a very good mood today, but why am I telling you this? You
want to know what's new, don't you, SUNSET?
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman. SUNSET, I am losing what little hope I had in you.
BEN'S BAZAAR the most avoided team? What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And it
looks like NOMADIC TRIBE avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be
losers, if you ask me. Hmph. I notice GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE challenging down 26
points to fight MUSUBU KIN, TOON INN doubtless has some rotten excuse for such an
insult to honor. And sorry to say, GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE subdued MUSUBU KIN, leaving
a bad feeling with the crowd. I think exploitive snob is the term I'm looking for.
I suspect either a 21 will or a 21 ego on this one, but THE THRILL has challenged up
by 28 in an attempt against WHEELBARROW. Well, ok, the upstart knave (where've I
heard that before?) won this match and gained 28 points to boot! Ha ha ha,
WHEELBARROW. Looks like time for laurels or hemlock, DAGAN was challenged by BLITZ,
who was ranked 37 points below him. And, oof! BLITZ saw stars around his helmet,
after losing the fight, and disappointing the crowds, I might add. Now here's guts
and stupidity all rolled into one, POPS challenged up 27 to take on LUCIANA of THE
UNHOLY ONES. Not that I'm surprised or anything, but POPS was dispatched by LUCIANA,
leaving the latter lower for recognition points. Looks like time for laurels or
hemlock, KILMOAR was challenged by TEXAS FLOOD, who was ranked 29 points below him.
My sides still hurt from laughing about KILMOAR losing and giving TEXAS FLOOD 28
points of recognition. Ha ha ha ha!!
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. Bye bye, warrior, bye bye... POPS, a glorious 7-7-0
fighter, has passed away. Gee, too bad BREAKERS. And what a stunning loss we have
here, boys and girls, FLUD of CAJUN APOCALYPSE has added the final loss to its 5-9-1.
Tee hee! I can't say as I'm proud to find out that THE UNHOLY ONES' LUCIANA has
killed POPS from BREAKERS. I can say I wish BREAKERS good luck in their bloodfeud.
Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave team is developing these kinds
of weapons?
What does the SUNSET arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Well, I've had enough of this
drivel, and I'm sure you have too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather. Paste
