Raoul, once known in the arena at Aruak City as In Gerfel We Trust, looked
around the waterfront and frowned. Even though he and his companions, Jeri
Northwind, a gladiator from Zorpunt, and Berdan, a Fratsfan ex-assassin, had just
come from the devastated town of Point, he had not expected to find Iaye in such a
"What happened here?" Jeri asked a lounger.
The local man, who could have used a bath, shrugged and spat. "The Trier rose
up and smashed the waterfront," he said. He looked at the woman calculatingly, as
though trying to guess how much money she might spend on hearing his tale. "Or
ghosts did it, if you can believe that."
"Ghosts out of Krael," Raoul said, nodding. "They hit Point, too."
"That's what folks say," the man agreed, scowling. "I guess you heard the story
already, huh? When I saw 'em coming, them ghosts, I didn't stay to ask their names.
A mean bunch. But things are pretty much okay on up the hill. Harbor House can
still give you a bed and a half-way decent feed."
Raoul looked at the man thoughtfully, glanced at his companions, and saw that
they agreed with him--ask this loafer nothing, tell him nothing. Iaye had an arena,
he and Jeri both had contacts there. That was where they'd ask their questions and
look for help.

Goff, the manager of Red Dog Gang in Iaye, shrugged. "They say it was ghosts,
but who knows? Does it matter?"
"Not to us," Raoul agreed. "Asking was just curiosity. We've got other
business. We're chasing a man known as Peranis, a Raltuman--"
"Him! He's a big-time troublemaker here, but he's got powerful friends. Nobody
can touch him."
"That's what we heard in Point, too," Jeri said, nodding. "Is he actually here
"No, I don't think so, I think he went to Skaithvarn. I keep track of him, as
much as I can, so as to keep out of his way. I had a run-in with him a few years
back," Goff explained, "and he's been out to do me bad turns ever since. That man
can REALLY hold a grudge. Uh...what do you want him for?"
Raoul glanced at Berdan, and the Fratsfan shrugged and sighed. "Peranis is a
member of the Assassins' Guild," Berdan said. "A high-ranking member. Though he's
been doing mostly administrative work lately, never doubt for a minute that he is a
dangerous man."
"Right, I won't doubt it," Goff said. "Why are you following him?"
"Because he's run off with the Guild's Black Book...which lists all the
assassins, all the Andorian spies abroad, all the people that the Guild is in a
position to coerce--"
     "Blackmail, you mean," Raoul growled.
Berdan nodded. "But up until the King disbanded the Guild, it wasn't blackmail,
it was, ah, 'encouraging them to act in the national interest rather than in their
"With the 'national interest' being determined by the Guild, of course," Jeri
"This Black Book, is it just names, or does it have details?" Goff asked. "I
mean, if somebody steals it from Peranis, can that somebody use it to blackmail?"
"Yes. We are pursuing Peranis to retrieve the book, which will be--"
"Which will be burned as soon as we get our hands on it," Raoul finished.
"But some of the information might be of great use to the King!" Berdan
Raoul shook his head. "No. That book is muck," he said flatly, "and you can't
pick up even a little of the muck without getting dirty. Let the King compile his
own files for 'encouraging' his citizens."
"And I hope he doesn't feel the need," Jeri added. "But you're right about the
Black Book. We've got to burn it."
"But first we have to catch Peranis and get the Book away from him," Raoul
finished. "You say he went to Skaithvarn. Where? There are several strong city-
states over there."
"I didn't ask him where he was going. My idea was to stay out of sight," Goff
pointed out. "But the word is he mostly goes to Istoreth."
"Isn't that the one that has a treaty with Osksi?" Raoul asked. "I didn't like
the idea of that book falling into S'varni hands, and I like it less if the Osksians
are going to have a chance at it." He took off his bowler and frowned down into it
as though he was looking into a crystal ball. "We need to get over there. You know
anyone with a boat?"
"Well...yeah, I've got a boat myself that'd make the crossing. It isn't that
far. But...." Goff ran a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. "But
it might be needed here--what if the ghosts come back?"
"Why should they come back?" Raoul asked.
"Nobody knows why they came in the first place, so how can we know whether
they'll come back?" The manager shook his head like a dog shaking off water. "Are
things going crazy everywhere?"
"Yes," Jeri answered, surprising the others. Defensively she added, "Well, they
are! Point was destroyed by the ghosts, too, and Seam now has a geyser in the middle
of town that can't be helping things much, and there are other stories going around.
Have you heard anything at all from Ti lately?"
"I know, doll," Raoul said quietly, "but we can't do more than one thing at a
time, and our job is to catch Peranis."

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly SOLVEN games. There were bitter words at THE ZOO's
guildhouse after a 1-4-0 showing this week which dropped the stable into 7th. Dark
Arena anyone? Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness
how this week THE REPUBLICANS went 3-2-0 to move up 3 in the rankings. My praise to
KELLUMBO'S KIDS for their 4-1-1 week this time out. Indeed, it was a skillfully
fought round deserving of notice! BISCUIT caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial
commission as she skillfully bested CLINTON and was awarded 28 points in recognition.
In one of the week's more notable duels, BISCUIT put down CLINTON, causing him to
lose 25 points of recognition in the process. This time out SUE made hers bid for
the throne as she challenged MAJOR MUFFINS in an all out contest of skill for
possession of the title! This time victory fell to the grasp of the usurper. All
hail SUE, Duelmaster of SOLVEN! Informants "close" to the city champion have told me
that he never fights without pantyhose on beneath his armor. Watch out!
Many and various are the arts of battle. In SOLVEN "art" is a word that has
long since passed from the language! I saw one fighter that warriors avoided when
this week's challenge seeking began. THE REPUBLICANS is feared. This much I can
say. Apparently the stalwarts of KELLUMBO'S KIDS are catching the bulk of jests down
at the challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Mighty fighters cannot
but expect competition from those below. BEAR MARKET take warning! You have more
than a few enemies in SOLVEN.
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. This week's duel proved deadly to
QUISLING as he fell to the more renowned warrior, MAXIMUS. How will ANDORIAN WIMPS
find revenge? Walk proud, warriors of KELLUMBO'S KIDS! By striking down QUISLING
you have avenged the honor of your dead. Your virtue is known to all in SOLVEN.
BEAR MARKET must hold silent, for this week she was humbled in the arena by a
successful Bloodfeud won by GUANTANAMO BAY of THE REPUBLICANS. Hail GUANTANAMO BAY
for thy victory! Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears arms. One thing
is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt!
The girls are as pretty in SOLVEN as ever I remembered them....and the fighters
as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! Sadly warriors, now longer can I keep thy
company nor savor the ale of thy fine city. Depart I must and soon! Till we meet
again, remember: a turtle walks slow, hides head in a shell, and harms no one; a
lion runs to slay its prey.-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Polite Beggar -- Thanks for giving both Klutz and Darkle wins. -- Wimpy

Shadowshade -- The pre-fight listings were wrong. You had plenty of strength. Ouch.
Ouch. And ouch. -- Pishtush

Skeemer -- Frankly that was a very poor challenge. My style should beat your style.
Maybe it was the fact that you had more experience. Or, perhaps it was because I
couldn't hit you. Not only that but you didn't teach me anything. It's a -- Pity

Kellumbo -- The bird of remorse has buried its beak deep within my heart. We Wimps
are profoundly sorry about the passing of Brianna. Quisling was running his normal 5
KD and I assure you had no intention of killing or even injuring Brianna. -- Wimpy

Ghost of Brianna -- Ha, ha, ha and ha. You got what you deserve. I spit on your
grave. Quisling

Judge -- How did you like that? -- Quisling

Quisling -- Stop that. You know the Wimp rules. No gloating over an accidental
death. -- Wimpy

Kelldumbo -- Sorry, I'll try and keep him under control. -- Wimpy

Homeless Prince -- How about if I find you a pup tent to call home, and you GO THERE.
-- Turkey Joe

Flat Tax -- I wish. -- Inarinda
P.S. Morris claims I should say "good fight," but *I* didn't like it.

It would appear that Khalhums is leaking. -- Deaf Smith

Justice -- I always thought you were a myth, or at least an unattainable ideal...and
I nearly made you one! Glad you survived that. I hope the six skills compensate for
the Infirmary time. -- Kangaroo Kate

Robert Bird -- (frowning) Are you one of those commie pinkos? -- Vilma

Wimpy -- Well, you know how it goes: life is tough, and then you get matched with
scum. -- Morris

Kids and Crats -- Such animosity! And I thought I talked a lot of trash. Here's
some advice--less crying, more fighting. -- General Snookums

Judge -- Bear was running a standard set-up. Oh well, she should have stayed in
Iraq. I welcome your honor bound bloodfeud. -- Al Gore

Judge -- Spank me, please, I have been naughty and need your loving...er...
discipline. -- Bear Market

5-0 this turn! Awesome. I would like to thank all the teams who helped me achieve
this. Again, thank you. -- Al Gore

Judith -- Nice fight! You never missed a beat. -- Al Gore

Vilma, what is a Vilma? I've never seen a Vilma before. -- Al Gore

Judge -- Oh, what I wouldn't have paid to see your face when you realized Maximus
beat Guantanamo Bay. I bet it was priceless. What's it been? A month now? It sure
must burn you.... -- Detective Kellumbo

Judge -- Funny how things turned out with PFC Lynch, huh? -- D.K.

Al Gore -- You were right about Brianna. She was a coward, and a lousy fighter.
Good riddance I say. -- D.K.

Snookums -- Is it wrong to bloodfeud the four turns you are allowed? I didn't see
that anywhere. -- A confused D.K.

Well, well, well. What have we got here? Twins; and blind at that. What's that?
You want to fight? Fair enough. Here's a sword for you, little boy, and a shield
for you, little girl. Show me what you've got. -- Kellumbo

Democrats -- Congrats on the 5-0-1 turn. Good job. -- Kellumbo

Women of Reality -- Wow! Four stylemasters! Way to go.

Guantanamo bay -- Bwaa haaa...haaahaaa...snicker, snicker. -- Maximus

Maximus -- Congrats on your victory. -- Guantanamo Bay

Quisling -- Nice job! Way to give Kellumbo a little competition. -- Judge

Kellumbo -- Don't think I did not notice the name of the warrior you DAed last cycle.
I will get my revenge when you least expect it. -- Judge

Inarinda -- I don't know if the "Flat Tax" will ever happen but George W. just
approved a tax cut, and knocked out the capitol gains tax. Not a bad start. -- Flat

To All -- Fellow managers, I humbly request your help. My team (Ex Oblivione) was
started in Monuntial (DM 34) back in '92. They were active for seven months. I have
lost all early traces of them. If any of you can help with copies of relevant
newsletters or, if you fought one of my warriors, copies of the fights, I would
greatly appreciate it. I only have one of my original warriors left from the early
team now active in DM 60. You can diplo me with any info here in the wonderful city
of Aradi. Thank you in advance. -- Enigma, manager Ex Oblivione

A note to everyone regarding manager names and manager lists -- If you're running a
team incognito, all you have to do is let me know and I won't put your name on any
manager lists. It has seemed though, that more people want their names listed, even
if they do not announce themselves, than the other way around. Also, I do maintain
the list more or less by hand and errors do creep in. You have but to say I've made
an error and no one will be the wiser (except thee and me, of course). -- The Saint,
keeper of lists

The last Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse was one of the closest and most exciting
contests ever held in Alastari. Such an epic demands a sequel. Therefore, Master
Darque and Jack Wolfspider are pleased to announce the return of the Stormcrowe
Where? Stormcrowe DM 45 (slow). When? The Slaughterhouse returns on Turn 207,
due August 19. How can you get into the action? Bring a team (one per entrant
please) to arena 45 and announce your intention to join the contest in the Personals.
Rules: This time around the rules are very simple. Each warrior win against a
higher rated opponent (one or more points higher in the ratings) brings you 10
points, against even rated opponent 7 points, lower rated 5 points. Wins against
NPCs or by a warrior who downchallenges are worth 0 points. Points are doubled for
kills. All warriors in the arena whether participating in the Slaughterhouse or not
are fair game. Points are totaled weekly, and the contestant whose team has racked
up the most points at the end of 10 turns is declared Slaughterhouse Champion.
Prizes: To be announced; we're still talking with RSI about it. Figure it will
be something pretty good. But hey, who needs prizes when the honor of being
Slaughterhouse Champion awaits!
More info: Master Darque, MasterDarqueDM@aol.com, or Jack Wolfspider,
russtulp@aol.com. Or diplo Darque Forces (428) or Dynastic (433) in Arena 45.
