Aruak City:

The mirror was resisting, a thing that had never happened before. Adeolar
wrestled with the spell, her entire attention concentrated on it. The mirror spell
was PASSIVE, it shouldn't be doing this! She took a deep breath and let it out
slowly, then stepped back mentally from her work. Magical devices were no different
than mechanical ones in some ways, they could get "stuck" on a certain phase of
operation. The mirror spell had simply gotten "stuck" on looking at Krael. All she
needed to do was deactivate it, then start over with a different target.
     It was a simple matter.
It should have been a simple matter.
She couldn't shut the spell down. She took another deep breath and ran through
the shut-down sequence again. There were currents of unformed magic swirling around
her now, and most of them were from sources she would not touch. Blood magic, from
the arena. It seemed to be working against her, reinforcing the mirror's resistance,
if such a thing was possible. Dammit, the mirror wasn't alive, it didn't have a
will, couldn't consciously resist...but that's what it felt like. Or that someone
she'd been looking at had sensed the spell, seized it from the other end, and was
trying to use it to look at HER. She was distantly aware of power--not a lot, but
some, enough to help--coming from outside her and reinforcing her efforts. More
distantly, she realized that it was Segallion and Nila. That power she could use.
She wove their offering into her own efforts and made a third attempt to shut down
the mirror spell.
The resistance continued, maybe increased. It was hard to be sure, because her
head was beginning to ache with the effort. Not good! If she made a slip through
weariness, the spell could escape her completely.
Another strand of power, faint as starlight but just as pure, joined with hers.
Absolutely precise. Familiar. Shania! The united effort bore down on the critical
points of the mirror spell. Not the points SHE had chosen.
*I can't hold this link for long* Shania thought to her. *But without it, I
couldn't have reached you at all. The high magics are fading with the Eyes, Adie.
Soon they'll be gone--*
"Leaving nothing but blood magic and petty witchcraft," Adie agreed grimly. "I
know."
*It's worse than you're thinking.* Shania's thought was urgent. *When there is
no high magic, there will be no protecting circles, demons will be unbound, all the
things that Sheila Greywand holds at bay will be loosed on Alastari! Gates will open
as though they'd never been sealed. ANYTHING could get loose! There are residual
traces of Old Chaos in Alastari, and if they aren't bound--*
"Disaster!" It didn't occur to Adie to doubt Shania's assessment. In matters
such as that, the elf seeress was unmatched. "But without high magic, how can we
hold the bindings? You don't suggest WE use blood magic?"
*No. Everything done with blood magic is tainted by it. Even for a good end...
the result will be twisted. Always.*
Adie was aware of Shania's shudder of revulsion. "There aren't a lot of other
sources--"
*I have a plan--it would take too long to explain now.* Shania's mental voice
was fading. *I'll be there soon.* The link between them shivered. *Break the
mirror!* She was gone from Adie's mind.
It was an effort for Adie to focus outward and look at the mirror. The
reflective surface was a sheet of blood! She couldn't disentangle her mind
completely from the spell and realized that the mirror had gone beyond resistance and
it--or something using it--was actively attempting to trap her. Easier said than
done! Most of her mental barriers had been lowered to work the spell, but she
slammed them back into place. Which was more difficult than it should have been, but
she DID manage it.
Her warrior Segallion staggered toward her, sword drawn. Adie saw that Nila had
collapsed behind him. Had they been seized by the spell, when it lost its grip on
her?

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

It's always fun to use a bloodfeud to take the throne. It seems that Terminator
is not particularly remorseful about killing my stablemate, Rumsfeld. That's
alright--I guess it earns him another shot at Solven's throne (or death), as he will
get another bloodfeud challenge this cycle.
Kellumbo, in response to your question to my manager, Judge, The Sentinel, and
Lorona (formerly known as Morris), and many other old time Solven managers do not run
scum or downchallenge here. Take your large shields and downchallenges to Aruak
City.
I hope to be here next cycle. I am not the best lunger Judge has run, by a long
shot, but I almost have an advanced master in attack, so I can beat most of you.

                    Your Duelmaster,
                    Flat Tax

P.S. Al Gore, Rangel got the beat down he deserved--just as Kerry and Edwards will
get their beating in November.

                                      SPY REPORT

Good day, in SOLVEN a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets poor.
So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. Now keep the taverns open late
tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for THE REPUBLICANS, whose 1-4-0 this turn
dropped them by 5 into 8th. K FORCE stable has parlayed this turn's 4-1-2 into a 4
space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 2nd place. Good work, guys! The
JUST CHILLIN guild has had a 4-1-1 turn and deserves to be watched in the future.
You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, GIL STAYNE fought
IRON MONKEY and gained 19 points and contributed to K FORCE's 4-1-2. BOSCOE has lost
to LIA' KIAN, falling 10 points, while helping make K FORCE a 4-1-2 turn. ILSA
SHE-WOLF challenged for the Duelmastership this turn, attempting to dethrone THE
REPUBLICANS' warrior. We should ask ILSA SHE-WOLF about the thrill of victory, and
what being the new Duelmaster does for a warrior, she's now the one to ask. Tell me,
is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Victory Tavern
uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle!
Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.'
Inscrutable, but true. I also notice that the THE DEMOCRATS stable was the most
avoided team this turn. Come on SOLVEN, what are you afraid of? And guess who
avoided THE DEMOCRATS stable the most? Believe it or not, it was THE POISON CLAN.
Anyone surprised? The most challenged warrior this turn was SAVAGE HEARTS 2's
warrior TERMINATOR. More fighters challenged him than challenged the Duelmaster! NO
HURRY from JUST CHILLIN took a risk this turn by bravely challenging up 35 points in
a challenge against NANCY PELOSI. And crowds were on their feet when NO HURRY
claimed a victory from NANCY PELOSI, and now has 99 points for his efforts. I don't
know about you, but THE PHOENIX challenging down 23 points to SAVAGE HEARTS 2's
ACHILLES, is not really worthy of THE POISON CLAN. We're not surprised to hear that
THE PHOENIX bested ACHILLES, but I bet it would be interesting to hear why THE POISON
CLAN made such a challenge. In a brave attempt, CHUNG' FOW from CHINESE CONNECTION
challenged up 24 points to fight WHAT UP from the JUST CHILLIN stable. CHUNG' FOW
perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he was defeated by WHAT UP and ended up with
27 recognition points. THE LOTUS of THE POISON CLAN had better have a good reason
for challenging down 12 points in a challenge which he lost. I thought THE LOTUS
showed great skill and promise when he was beat by LING' LON. All right, so I slept
through it! Big deal!
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to
be true. THE REPUBLICANS has lost 2ND AMENDMENT to the arena in the sky, but they
don't seem to be worried. What do you expect from 3-7-0? A brave warrior does not
carry a red shield, he has nothing to cover or hide when the fight is over. Consider
well.
Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare
to fight bravely. Always good to rest in SOLVEN, but never good to wear out my
welcome. Look for me in future turns. Until you see my quill in SOLVEN again,
farewell-- Alarond the Scribe

Paradox23 -- Welcome to the fray. -- Master Tazo

Judge -- Congrats on your second DM in two years! Way to go. -- Kellumbo

K Force -- Who manages you, and what alliance are you part of? -- DK

Terminator -- You must be crazy if you think you could beat Ilsa. She'd tear you up,
bub. -- DK

Oh great and mighty Master of Tacos far and near -- You'll have to do better than 5-
10 or 1-4 to take down my records in this arena. If you're gonna downchallenge, at
least win! -- Kellumbo

Silver -- Please don't tell me you named (jimmie) parts of my body??!! Let it go,
perv. -- DK

Paradox -- Welcome to the best arena in all of Alastari! -- Detective Kellumbo

Kate -- Ah, what a wonderful going away present you left me. -- Ilsa

Tax Deduction -- Yup, that must have hurt too. -- Jessica

Assamite -- Thanks for confirming that the Captain is just not good enough. Off to
the DA with you, Captain. -- DK

What Up -- Getting your butt whupped, that's what up! -- Snake Charmer

Troll -- An unfortunate matchup for you. Good luck down the road. -- Schwarzenegger

Nancy Pelosi -- Killing a Virginal Concubine! You swine! I bet you even used your
trusty longspear for the job! -- Kellumbo

Lasombra -- Oh, you did it now. Methinks Al will be sending Nancy your way for a
little payback. -- DK

Phoenix -- Next time I need to remember to bring a sword instead of a wet noodle!
Apparently I couldn't bruise you to submission. Perhaps I should start taking a new
combo of Wheaties and Roids! -- Arls

Duhtective -- Chaos will be rained upon you. -- K Force

Zooie -- Don't worry. I was just in a good zone that fight. Must have been the
funny ice in my drink. Hmm. -- Boscoe

Ilsa She-Wolf -- Heck. I guess that means the wolf is faster than the kangaroo.
Odd, I wouldn't have thought so in the short run. -- Kangaroo Kate

2nd Amendment -- Okay, you want to bare your arms, that's fine with me. But who said
you could come out with FOUR arms? I've heard of "four-eyes," but four ARMS? Ooooo.
-- Zooie

No Hurry -- That works for me. -- Kalamazoo

Jer Ber -- I thought you were some kind of baby food. Obviously, I was wrong. --
Arishtarte

The Delta -- Way too muddy for me. -- Eldridge Phant, who likes his ground to be FIRM

Captain Chaos -- After that provocative comment last time, I feel I should mostly
keep my mouth shut here. But I wanted you to know that I DID read it. -- Eldridge
Phant

Detective Kellumbo -- Thanks for the congratulations, but I intend to stay as far
from Turkey Joe as possible. He actually plans to RAISE turkeys! And they're dumb
and messy and I want NOTHING to do with them. At least, until someone (not me) has
cooked them. -- Kangaroo Kate

The Toad -- Aren't we? How can you tell? -- Kangaroo Kate
P.S. Friends don't throw fights. That would give you a skewed notion of what you
could do on the sands against an enemy.

Lasombra -- You are a coward born from cowards. You have no honor, your manager is
pathetic and has dishonored himself by downchallenging and murdering my warrior. I
call upon all loyal Andorians to punish these scum. You shall no longer pad your
win/loss record with easy downchallenges. Prepare for a bloodfeud that will never
end. -- Al Gore

The Scorpion -- I will be turning my eye towards another. I tire of your avoids and
wasted challenges. I thank you for the easy wins and skills. -- Al Gore

Boscoe -- So close, yet so far away. At least I got more skills than you. -- C.M.B.

Gil Stayne -- Thanks for sucking. -- Al Gore

To the new teams -- Welcome. -- Al Gore

                             Death Fest Begins July 29/DM 59 T-172

"You drive a hard bargain Hammer," responded Lord Lian Ki Na-Sul, "but the
Gladiatorial Commission has agreed to re-open DM 58 Delarq Tor as a Slow Arena
exclusively for a period of six months to those Death Fest contestants who fight
their stables at least 67 times out of a possible 75 during the 15 rounds of Death
Fest; on the condition that at least 20 stables qualify for the Illis Iron Stable
Award at the conclusion of the Death Fest and those qualifying managers send a New
Stable to DM 58 Delarq Tor without Cannibalizing their participation in the other
arenas where they have active stables!"
Hammer felt a certain sense of satisfaction as he studied the ghoulish grin
spreading across the face of Lord Lian Ki Na-Sul; proud Arena Master of the once
dying Illis Arena, as the DM 59 Arena Authority signed the Gladiatorial Commission
papers authenticating the arrangement agreed upon by the two parties presiding.
"You and the Gladiatorial Commission also drive a hard bargain," Hammer replied
as he reflected upon the prospects of Delarq Tor DM 58 being re-opened as a Slow
Arena with at least 20 New Stables by the Managers who fight their stables at least
67 times out of a possible 75 during the 15 rounds of Death Fest. "I also notice the
clause that for Delarq Tor to be open Exclusively for 6 months to the New Stables
managed by the Illis Iron Stable Award Winners that there must be at least 15 stables
Active each cycle. That is a fair bargain for the opportunity to battle for the
Duelmaster Throne each of those six months before Other New Stables are allowed to
enter Delarq Tor."
This was a Golden Opportunity for both Veteran and Newbie Managers to pave a new
frontier of Delarq history by qualifying their Death Fest stables in DM 59 with 67
fights out of a possible 75; then for the price of running a stable in a Regular
Arena, continuing to be Active in DM 59 and sending a New Team Roll Up to be a part
of "History in the Making" when Delarq Tor would re-open for its First Turn as a Slow
Arena on November 3rd, 2005.
Death Fest would conclude on T-186 August 25th, 2005 allowing the Illis Iron
Stable Award Winners enough time to be registered with the Gladiatorial Commission;
whereupon they would be able to submit a New Team Roll Up to the GC to start a New
Stable in Delarq Tor; be able to fight those New Gladiators in the Rookies 2005 Fall
Mailer Tourney; then begin competing for the DM 58 Duelmasters Throne in Delarq Tor
right out of the gate with the November 3rd 2005 T-1 Debut Opening Round.
Hammer of the First Part had also negotiated with Lord Na-Zul of the Second Part
an agreement that All 10 Dark Arena Monsters and 17 NPCs Characters be re-named by
the Top Ten Death Fest Finishers. [See DM 59 T-171 Newsletter Team Spotlight by
Hammer for the complete listing of Dark Arena Monsters/NPCs and the Official Death
Fest Designation for which Top Ten Finishers re-name which characters!]
Lord Na-Sul could not hide his delight at the prospects of Death being re-
delivered to his once dying arena during the Delarq Death Fest; the DM 59 Arena
Master agreed that these Death Fest Prizes were but a Small Exchange in Comparison to
the Profits to be made by the local Illis business merchants and surrounding
community from the Anticipated Influx into Illis by the Veteran and Newbie
Managers/Gladiators/Stables seeking to make History in the Delarq Death Fest.
Nor could Hammer conceal his jubilation regarding the Call Across Alistari being
Answered to Cross Blades and Match Wits with the Devious, the Diabolical, the
Dangerous and the Down Challenging who were being drawn to the Delarq Death Fest to
Fulfill their Delarq Dueling Destiny!
REMEMBER: Death Fest begins July 29th T-172 with 25 points being awarded to
those who write a minimum 15 paragraph Team Spotlight [including Stable Name &
Managerial Alias in the Storyline!] for the DM 59 T-172 Newsletter [So Make Sure HAL
