Notes from the arena champ.
The smell of the crisp fall air can only mean one thing: It's tourney time!
Who among you, mighty warriors of Solven, will bring home the best tourney
performance of the arena? One of my teammates perhaps? Jessica, you are undefeated
in this great city so far. Go forth to the tourney and show us what you really are
made of. Or perhaps one of the upstart Chaos warriors will surprise us all just as
Brujah did last time. Perhaps some manager pulls their first TV this time around.
Maybe It's Time.
And let us not forget those warriors who gave all for these games and paid the
ultimate price. This is their one chance to claw their way back to the living. The
Lizard, Next Time, Flat Tax, perhaps one of you will make Solven shine.
Well, whoever it is, and no matter who you are, remember that you fight for the
pride and honor that is Solven, greatest arena in all of the lands of Alastari!
Fight well, fight hard, and bring the prize home with you.

SPY REPORT
It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last
week's fights. Coming up with a solid 4-1-0 outing, DON'T ASK SANDY has advanced 3
places in the rankings. Advancing in the rankings was JUST CHILLIN who went from
last turn's 55-39-5, to this week's record of 59-40-5. Hey everybody, watch out for
THE LOTUS, who flew up 22 points in the rankings after mashing CEPACOL like a melon.
Keep your eye on this guy. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the
sands. CEPACOL was subdued by THE LOTUS and drops 16 points. It's a proud day for
the JUST CHILLIN stable, as their warrior, WHAT UP, ascended the Duelmaster's throne.
Advice to bashers--never force anything, just get a bigger halberd!
Here is other news that is of note. Did you hear that THE DEMOCRATS was most
avoided team this week? Well, knowing the personal hygiene of THE DEMOCRATS'
warriors, I'm not surprised! For those of you who like math, try this one: THE
DEMOCRATS + Weapons That go Boom = KELLUMBO'S KIDS + Avoid City. Well just about
everybody wants a piece of NANCY PELOSI, who was this week's most challenged warrior.
Was it guts or an overtaxed mental capacity that had DARRELL ISSA challenge up 27
points in the rankings to take on THE TOAD? Trading many whacks on the head and a
loss for 9 recognition points, DARRELL ISSA shows that a guy doesn't have to be good
to get places. Getting lots of flowers from sympathetic fans was TAX DEDUCTION, who
was successfully challenged by EASY BREEZE who had a mere 18 points more than TAX
DEDUCTION. Definition of petty: EASY BREEZE overcame TAX DEDUCTION, a mismatch of
18 points. Can any one out there say 'weasel'? Oh well, just saying SCHWARZENEGGER
will do. He challenged 24 points down to trash ZEBROE. Definition of petty:
SCHWARZENEGGER beat ZEBROE, a mismatch of 24 points. In a touching display by a
'touched' warrior, OFF STYLE went after LUCIAS CLAY, who was higher by 20 points.
Well, when the dust settled, OFF STYLE was subdued by LUCIAS CLAY.
Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the
most interesting, though! Congrats to STOOPID for revenging the death of its
teammate (but more importantly, feeding BIG TREE a bit of dirt). Remember:
alliances are great, but try and take your ally in the arena with you and see what
happens.
Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in SOLVEN have no
sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Well, there goes another Spy

Solven -- I had hoped the subject of down-challenging had been thoroughly thrashed
out, here and elsewhere. In the first place, this is a small arena. Sometimes the
only viable challenges are downward. It happens, and it's legal. And second, the
way a manager challenges and how he feels about doing it is between him and his
conscience or other appropriate concept. It is not, in my opinion, something that
requires the sanction of the arena community at large. You challenge any legal way
that pleases you and take the consequences whatever they may be, with no whining. If
somebody challenges you in a way you don't like, you, personally, the one who is
upset or offended, take care of it. I don't ask anybody to fight my battles, and I
don't expect to fight anybody else's. MUST we go on and on and on and on about down-
challenging? Nobody will convince anybody else. Nobody's saying anything that
hasn't been said many times over. Let it rest. -- Leeta, The Zoo
P.S. Okay, I take back one point. I do get annoyed at experienced managers who make
use of the game's rules to victimize beginners. But we have so few beginners these
days it isn't a big problem.

primarily about. If you can do that without killing off my warriors, I would be
pleased, as I hate recruiting. I myself seldom avoid and even more seldom challenge;
I am primarily a role-player. I'm here to write personals and keep This Week's
Fights from encroaching on the front page or even, if possible the second page. It's
a dirty job, but somebody's got to do.
Further, with the summer's gadding about behind me (I hope), I am about to
resume the writing of spotlights. I foresee one-arena pieces, maybe one episode or
fairly short storylines, and any warrior one of mine fights is fair game. If you do
not want any of your warriors to appear in a spotlight, speak up--that goes for all
managers here. If you have some specific way in which you want a warrior to appear,
tell me, I'm not in the Commission office and have no access to the census forms.

FACE-TO-FACE XXXIV
Our next Winter Face-to-Face will be held on Martin Luther King weekend, Friday
through Sunday, 14-16 January 2005, at the Embassy Suites in Tempe, Arizona (4400 S
Rural Rd--this is the same hotel as last year). Room rates are $139.00 per night,
1-4 occupancy, which includes breakfast. The rooms are blocked. The reservations
number is 480-897-7444; tell them you're with the "Reality Simulations Face to Face
Convention" block. Our room block will be released in mid-December, so please make
sure you reserve your room before then!
Room rates include a full cooked-to-order breakfast and a complimentary two-hour
manager's reception. There is a free shuttle to the airport, as well as free parking.
The hotel is located down the freeway in Tempe. All rooms have high speed internet
(for an extra charge). There is a fitness center, jacuzzi, and pool, and of course a
bar and Mexican restaurant inside the hotel. And there's Denny's right across the
street. Look for transportation info in the tournament information sheet.
The tournament information sheet/strategy sheet should be out sometime in late
November/early December.
