Fratsfa:

Fandil started by simply opening his magical awareness, a sort of sixth sense,
to the city. This was not the most pleasant experience, because Fratsfa was a very
old city that had been steeping in magic of many kinds for centuries. The background
was a muck of bits and pieces of spells accumulated, pressed together by the addition
of more magic on top of it, deformed by that pressure and by age, uniting into
compound magical structures that no magician had ever visualized, almost breeding
with each other. Fratsfa had the highest incidence of spontaneous magical activity
of anyplace other than Chaos-contaminated ground such as the marshy plain near Delarq
Tor. And when it was happening without the guidance of even a deranged mind, you
didn't need the residual effect of Chaos Magic to twist the results into strange
forms. Some parts of the background magic here were alive.
Against this background, real, living, practicing magicians moved like thieves
in a crowd: sometimes you saw them, sometimes you didn't. Picking out possible
allies and enemies wasn't easy. Fandil snorted. If it was easy, they wouldn't need
him.
He began to sort and filter his impressions, and the first thing he discovered
was another magician, also scanning. Younger, though no child. Not a clear
signature, male, human, mixed motives. But strong, and even with mixed motives, he
might be willing to make himself useful--
A blast of energy like a portculis falling, like a guilotine. Like being hit in
the head with an axe, but not, Fandil decided as he picked himself up off the floor,
quite as bloody and final. What had happened was clear enough: some magician of
considerable power had broken the beginning of contact between Fandil and the young
mage before it had a chance to develop. Possibly had killed the young man, which
would be unfortunate.
The old mage extended his magical sense again, not as easily--even thinking hurt
at the moment. The magical background was seething, the Fratsfan magicians had
either gone into hiding or were doing the equivalent of standing on their doorsteps
shouting at each other. Not helpful. Well, looking back at the brief contact, it
was not Fandil's impression that the young man was HERE. Within fifty miles,
probably closer, but not right here in the city. North and west. Maybe in... Andor?
A hopeful thought, they could use a contact in the capital. He reached out--and came
up against a wall of magic. No contact with Andor was possible from here. He would
have to go closer physically if he wanted to pursue that connection. Or wait until
the arcanum cleared, this kind of barrier took amazing amounts of energy to sustain.
But he had a feeling, growing stronger by the moment, that they didn't have the
time to wait.

                                      SPY REPORT

It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last
week's fights. Don't these new hotshots make you sick (or, if they fought you,
hurt)? MAULS LOCAL 457, on their very first turn, went 2-1-0. Hey everybody, watch
out for MAULCONTENT, who flew up 20 points in the rankings after mashing SO HAPPY
like a melon. Keep your eye on this beast. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to
walk out on the sands. SO HAPPY was beat by MAULCONTENT and drops 10 points. Well,
everybody's pal HOT EIGHTEEN moved hers record to 10-1-0 by defeating VETERAN
MERCENARY in the Duelmaster's Title Bout and gaining 2 recognition points. Advice to
bashers--never force anything, just get a bigger halberd!
Here is other news that is of note. Did you hear that KELLUMBO'S KIDS was most
avoided team this week? Well, knowing the personal hygiene of KELLUMBO'S KIDS'
warriors, I'm not surprised! For those of you who like math, try this one:
KELLUMBO'S KIDS + Weapons That go Boom = MAULS LOCAL 457 + Avoid City. LITTLE SMIRK
of KELLUMBO'S KIDS had better have a good reason for challenging down 12 points in a
challenge which she won. I thought LITTLE SMIRK showed great skill and promise when
she subdued ELDON KREE. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the
most interesting, though! Remember: alliances are great, but try and take your ally
in the arena with you and see what happens.
I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of
you whom I have not offended yet. C'mon, Leadfoot, let's make some tracks. Its been
real, and its been fun, but it hasn't been real fun...-- The Unknown Spymaster

Hot Eighteen -- Like there's anyone else for you guys to fight. Well, since I had to
fight you, I figure you have to listen to me. You're buying yourself a peck of
trouble with that whole "hot chick" approach. Sure, if you go to the Isle, some of
the bad ends will be eliminated, but still, you just don't outgrow a reputation, you
know? Not that *I* care what kind of rep you leave with, in fact, you have such a
high profile that the rest of us could swing from the chandeliers and on one would
notice. Well, unless the chandeliers broke from their moorings and fell, setting
fire to the house or arena, and generally making...hmm. A major conflagration sounds
like...an interesting possibility. Let me think about this. -- Jilian Norman

Kung-FU Master? "Fu" is stuff you do that you don't want to go into details about,
right? And this Kung guy doesn't want to go into details about what HE does, which
makes ME wonder what it is he does that's so darned secret. Is he using magic in the
arena? I mean, what are these strange words he shouts during the fight? Spells?
Should we draw the Steward's attention to them? Although...how could the Steward not
have noticed already? Hmm. I bet he (the Steward) has been PAID OFF. We need to
check INTO this stuff. -- Ellirn Koul

Seems to me that the only kind of CIVILIZED Criminal is a politician, and some of
them aren't all that civilized anyway. We should meet him in an alley and mosterize
him. All in favor, grab your swords. -- Chawlie Istta

The Honest Merchant is a complete mystery to me. Setting aside the possible oxymoron
in his name, if he's so darned honest, what's he doing in the arena? Surely he can't
think it's FUN to risk his life at the hands of a bunch of desperate gladiators! I
suppose his alleged honesty could have driven him crazy. -- Hotl Muschel

So Happy -- Come to that, are YOU crazy? Or are you "happy" for the same reason
you're in the arena at all, and it has to do with some additive in your wine last
month? Inquiring Minds are amazed and curious. -- Eldon Kree

Our salute to all who dared the tourney. -- Jorja and the Middle Way
