Even though he and his companions, Jeri Northwind, a gladiator from Zorpunt, and Berdan, a Fratsfan ex-assassin, had just come from the devastated town of Point, he had not expected to find Iaye in such a mess. "What happened here?" Jeri asked a lounger. The local man, who could have used a bath, shrugged and spat. "The Trier rose up and smashed the waterfront," he said. He looked at the woman calculatingly, as though trying to guess how much money she might spend on hearing his tale. "Or ghosts did it, if you can believe that." "Ghosts out of Krael," Raoul said, nodding. "They hit Point, too." "That's what folks say," the man agreed, scowling. "I guess you heard the story already, huh? When I saw 'em coming, them ghosts, I didn't stay to ask their names. A mean bunch. But things are pretty much okay on up the hill. Harbor House can still give you a bed and a half-way decent feed." Raoul looked at the man thoughtfully, glanced at his companions, and saw that they agreed with him--ask this loafer nothing, tell him nothing. Iaye had an arena, he and Jeri both had contacts there. That was where they'd ask their questions and look for help. Goff, the manager of Red Dog Gang in Iaye, shrugged. "They say it was ghosts, but who knows? Does it matter?" "Not to us," Raoul agreed. "Asking was just curiosity. We've got other business. We're chasing a man known as Peranis, a Raltuman--" "Him! He's a big-time troublemaker here, but he's got powerful friends. Nobody can touch him." "That's what we heard in Point, too," Jeri said, nodding. "Is he actually here now?" "No, I don't think so, I think he went to Skaithvarn. I keep track of him, as much as I can, so as to keep out of his way. I had a run-in with him a few years back," Goff explained, "and he's been out to do me bad turns ever since. That man can REALLY hold a grudge. Uh...what do you want him for?" Raoul glanced at Berdan, and the Fratsfan shrugged and sighed. "Peranis is a member of the Assassins' Guild," Berdan said. "A high-ranking member. Though he's been doing mostly administrative work lately, never doubt for a minute that he is a dangerous man." "Right, I won't doubt it," Goff said. "Why are you following him?" "Because he's run off with the Guild's Black Book...which lists all the assassins, all the Andorian spies abroad, all the people that the Guild is in a position to coerce--" "Blackmail, you mean," Raoul growled. Berdan nodded. "But up until the King disbanded the Guild, it wasn't blackmail, it was, ah, 'encouraging them to act in the national interest rather than in their own'." "With the 'national interest' being determined by the Guild, of course," Jeri muttered. "This Black Book, is it just names, or does it have details?" Goff asked. "I mean, if somebody steals it from Peranis, can that somebody use it to blackmail?" "Yes. We are pursuing Peranis to retrieve the book, which will be--" "Which will be burned as soon as we get our hands on it," Raoul finished. "But some of the information might be of great use to the King!" Berdan protested. Raoul shook his head. "No. That book is muck," he said flatly, "and you can't pick up even a little of the muck without getting dirty. Let the King compile his own files for 'encouraging' his citizens." "And I hope he doesn't feel the need," Jeri added. "But you're right about the Black Book. We've got to burn it." "But first we have to catch Peranis and get the Book away from him," Raoul finished. "You say he went to Skaithvarn. Where? There are several strong city- states over there." "I didn't ask him where he was going. My idea was to stay out of sight," Goff pointed out. "But the word is he mostly goes to Istoreth." "Isn't that the one that has a treaty with Osksi?" Raoul asked. "I didn't like the idea of that book falling into S'varni hands, and I like it less if the Osksians are going to have a chance at it." He took off his bowler and frowned down into it as though he was looking into a crystal ball. "We need to get over there. You know anyone with a boat?" "Well...yeah, I've got a boat myself that'd make the crossing. It isn't that far. But...." Goff ran a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. "But it might be needed here--what if the ghosts come back?" "Why should they come back?" Raoul asked. "Nobody knows why they came in the first place, so how can we know whether they'll come back?" The manager shook his head like a dog shaking off water. "Are things going crazy everywhere?" "Yes," Jeri answered, surprising the others. Defensively she added, "Well, they are! Point was destroyed by the ghosts, too, and Seam now has a geyser in the middle of town that can't be helping things much, and there are other stories going around. Have you heard anything at all from Ti lately?" "I know, doll," Raoul said quietly, "but we can't do more than one thing at a time, and our job is to catch Peranis." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 231): DOMINO of BONDAGE (Spawn, mgr.) Zorpunt, Hail, all! Having been shamed by the almighty CEO of Zorpunt I am here to address you. I can remember not long ago running laps around the guildhouse all night holding 2 large shields while my 4 teammates pummeled away at my feeble defenses. All because I started off 1-4. Well, I'd like to thank Street Legal for forcing me to become better, it worked and paid dividends for us both. Later this week Street graduated warriors 14 & 15 from Basic (I was lucky #13). Quite a week for my faithful manager, I must say congrats to him. I have enjoyed my stay here in our quaint little town, and am actually sad to be leaving. I have a nice piece of land adjacent to my stablemates (none of them teammates, all come from Tobir, Aruak, Zensu, and Niytyole). I have land across the road from a strange couple, the wife has this strange red hairdo. I think his name is Al and he graduated as a TP from Tobir arena. He has 2 kids who are always getting in to trouble it seems, but I should hope we will get along well! For those of you wondering how I achieved my 19-12-0 record this is what I looked like: 10(1)-16-14-11-15(2)-12-9 TP. I have an AdEx in PAR and an Ex in DEF (+1). My favorites, rhythm: VL/VL, weapon: QS, learn: DEF, Tactic: Parry. Thank you all and I am honored to have been your Duelmaster and to be a Lord Protector for Zorpunt in Andorak! Dominik Hasek SPY REPORT Well, what are you looking at, ZORPUNT? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see DEHUMANIZER win a fight and gain 21 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, STONEFISH beat PENOK and PENOK lost 14 points. You're breakin' my heart. Going for broke or broken, our Duelmaster HIGH ELF Dark Arena Challenged this turn. And if variety is the spice of life, ZORPUNT may be getting bland, as DOMINIK HASEK stays top dog in the city. I'm not in a very good mood today, but why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new, don't you, ZORPUNT? My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start talking.' I loved that woman. ZORPUNT, I am losing what little hope I had in you. THE ASININE the most avoided team? What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And it looks like BATTLEMANIA avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, TRISHA WINGFOOT was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans. Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and gone, and get to see if their team cared. Whoa! I'll even buy DOMINIK HASEK a drink tonight! Anyone who can come back from the Dark Arena, I want to be on his good side! It's about time EASTERN BROWN got beat for picking on warriors like FLITTER MCGEE. Bravo, KRILL CAVALRY. See you at The Dripping Blade. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave team is developing these kinds of weapons? What does the ZORPUNT arena have in common with the inns? It's just as comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Well, I've had enough of this drivel, and I'm sure you have too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather. You have to go getting desperate and ignoring me with your single-minded desire to poke me with your spear. You...savage barbarian...you! -- CEO Sigh. I hate to see a young basher go like that. It's always a possibility, I know, but we really don't go looking for the kill. Here's to the memory of Kobey Tayne. -- Spankytime Dehumanizer -- Woah! You're a big one. And an Adex already? Smart too. But your name...why are all the good-looking guys so lacking in personality? -- Penok Luann Swift -- Kinda surprised me too. Wish I could get it to do that again. Maybe if I wave it around real hard and jump up and down? -- Penok Oops, my bad, Flitter. You had just taken the throne that turn so hadn't had time to write a column yet. Sorry you didn't keep it. Those MC5 guys have been way too quiet. Oh well, hope to see you back on the big chair this turn! -- CEO Luann Swift -- That's what happens when you muck with the second most deadly snake in the world. -- Eastern Brown Krill Cavalry -- My condolences to Luann Swift's next of kin. -- THawk CEO -- No conspiracy, I'm just a good learner! -- Curtis Joseph Flitter McGee -- It appears I am just a bit better defensively than Curtis and the Kid. It was, however, not an easy win; looks like you may have a few more turns as DM soon to come! -- Dominik Hasek Huge Twirling Man -- This was a very frustrating loss. I'm just hoping this isn't one of The Muffin Man's transfer teams as he REALLY has my number, as well as the ticket to my warriors' dirt naps! -- Kid Rock and Street Legal Trisha Wingfoot -- A longer fight, I took less punishment and I learn less than last time? Not right at all! The learns should come in handy, however! -- Curtis Joseph Cane Toad and THawk -- A very brave challenge, though not so bright. I am not as bad as my record would allow for! Hope the skills were worth it! -- Slim Shady Aimer -- My, what big feet you have. I will be back and I will win this next time (or I will likely be fighting at night, my manager says)! -- Mark Tremonte Dominik Hasek -- I guess it's natural for an old fella like you to pace yourself that way, hmm? I just can't seem to get the hang of that. Good thing you're leaving, and I won't HAVE to get the hang of it. -- Flitter McGee P.S. Thanks for the skills, fella. I'll cherish 'em. Curtis Joseph -- Not one of my favorite fights. (sigh) Way it goes, at least I survived! -- Trisha Wingfoot Stonefish -- There, you see? A career error. No doubt about it. You should probably have been a total parry, as too many people here seem to be. -- Tellar Fleet Eastern Brown -- Nasty, aren't you? Two kills in four wins? We will bloodfeud this one, as you seem to be taking your team name too seriously. -- Ghost of Luann Swift Spanky Time -- Heck, talk about bad luck. -- Ghost of Kobey Tayne P.S. 'Course, I knew I wasn't much good at this stuff when Leeta told me to train as a basher.... Darkfist -- In small arenas, that happens often--the accidental bloodfeud. But now and then, when it appears to be necessary, we do actually stir ourselves to the point of issuing a challenge. -- Leeta 15 May 2003 Assurnasirbanipal invites all to use his computerized warrior management tool. Such an epic demands a sequel. Therefore, Master Darque and Jack Wolfspider are pleased to announce the return of the Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse. Where? Stormcrowe DM 45 (slow). When? The Slaughterhouse returns on Turn 207, due August 19. How can you get into the action? Bring a team (one per entrant please) to arena 45 and announce your intention to join the contest in the Personals. Rules: This time around the rules are very simple. Each warrior win against a higher rated opponent (one or more points higher in the ratings) brings you 10 points, against even rated opponent 7 points, lower rated 5 points. Wins against NPCs or by a warrior who downchallenges are worth 0 points. Points are doubled for kills. All warriors in the arena whether participating in the Slaughterhouse or not are fair game. Points are totaled weekly, and the contestant whose team has racked up the most points at the end of 10 turns is declared Slaughterhouse Champion. Prizes: To be announced; we're still talking with RSI about it. Figure it will be something pretty good. But hey, who needs prizes when the honor of being Slaughterhouse Champion awaits! More info: Master Darque, MasterDarqueDM@aol.com, or Jack Wolfspider, russtulp@aol.com. Or diplo Darque Forces (428) or Dynastic (433) in Arena 45.
