Tobir:

Daisy January rose from the sand where she had knelt by the waterside and
frowned. "The Trier is FRESH water. It's always been fresh water."
"It was fresh water yesterday," Karanjal from Zorpunt agreed. "But today...."
He shrugged. "Today there are a lot of dead fish."
"Because they're fresh water fish, and today the water is salt. But it doesn't
make SENSE."
Their manager, Leeta, glanced up from the beach that she was studying. "It's
Chaos," she said flatly. She pointed to a line of driftwood and dead fish well up
the beach. "It's not only salt water today, there are tides."
"The Trier has tides!" Karanjal protested.
"A foot at the most." Leeta shrugged. "The waves would never come that far up
the beach normally, not without a big storm. And we haven't had a storm. So...."
After a moment's contemplation, Daisy January said, "I don't like it. It'
isn't...proper."
"It isn't the worst that could be happening, either," the Zorpunti pointed out.
"Look at Point...or Ti. Or look at where Ti used to be, anyway."
"A sudden disaster such as devastated Point and presumably removed Ti is not the
same as something more, well, subtle and insidious. Changing the Trier from fresh
water to salt is subtle and insidious," Daisy argued.
Leeta raised an eyebrow. "You'd rather have a sudden disaster?"
     "Yes."
"Gods, woman!" Karanjal protested, "don't SAY things like that! What if
Somebody is listening?"
"Somebody was!" Leeta said abruptly. "Get off the beach!" She grabbed each of
her gladiators by an arm and headed inland at a run.
Daisy twisted to look over her shoulder. A wave had risen out on the surface of
the Trier. It wasn't possible to say how tall it was, there was nothing out there to
measure it against, but it was the biggest wave she had ever seen, and it was moving
toward them. She thought she glimpsed faces-- Her foot caught on a tangle of grass
as Leeta dragged her off the beach, and she stumbled.
Leeta hauled her back to her feet, and Karanjal grabbed her other arm. "Run!"
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
The destruction had been concentrated along the shore and the harbor. Ships had
been lifted like toys and smashed against the docks. Warehouses had their front
walls battered in, and many had collapsed. The streets were an impassable tangle of
rubble.
"Who could hate Tobir this much?" Daisy asked, looking around. The mess was so
vast, it was hard to imagine where to start cleaning up.
"It was a natural disaster, and natural disasters aren't about hate, they're
just chance." Karanjal pointed out. He couldn't stop himself from adding, "Like you
asked for."
"I'm not sure it was natural," she said. "I saw faces in the wave--"
     "Imagination."
"No, I saw them. And it made me think about Point and Iaye." She glanced
around uneasily.
"The rumors are that Point and Iaye were attacked by ghosts from Krael,"
Karanjal said. "What has Tobir done to anger Krael? Krael was gone before Tobir was
ever founded!" He selected a deposit of rubble on the edge of the zone of
destruction and began to pull it apart, stacking the lumber to one side. Elsewhere
along what had been Tobir's waterfront, other people were doing the same.
"What did Ti do to anger Krael?" Daisy asked. She grabbed the other end of a
beam and helped him drag it clear. "I can see linking the destruction here to Point,
because of the faces in the wave, but Ti wasn't destroyed, it was just gone."
"You think it's likelier there are TWO forces destroying towns along this coast?
At the same time, mind you."
"Ah...good point." She took a small board and used it to scrape pieces of
broken glass into a pile out of the way. "So what do we do about it?"
"Investigate Krael, I suppose." Karanjal squinted out across the harbor.
"Notice the smell?"
"Notice? How can I NOT notice?"
"Do you notice that it's fresh water again?"
"What? Demnat's teeth and whiskers! It makes me dizzy just thinking about it."
Daisy squinted at him. "Don't change the subject, Kar. How do we investigate Krael?
It drowned centuries ago."
He shrugged. "We're Lord Protectors. We've got friends, resources, contacts we
haven't tried to use yet. We'd better start using 'em, though. Who knows how far
the destruction might spread? Down to Ardivent, maybe to Osksi and beyond? Up to
Amen-Tei? We've got to have information, and fast, before the whole west coast of
Alastari is wiped out."

The Isle of Kordos:

Gelleran frowned at Belana, plainly worried by her talk of places that, so far
as he knew, didn't exist. "The witch's attack must have, um, distorted your
memories," he suggested finally. "In truth, there is no Valamantis anywhere within
the circles of the world. Though why the witch would take the trouble to plant such
an idea in your mind I cannot imagine." Since she would not accept a hug from him,
he took her hand, and even that he did as though he expected to be repulsed. "Come,
my dearest."
Belana felt a twinge of remorse. The Gelleran of this world, whatever world it
was, obviously had a much closer relationship with the...the Belana of this world.
It seemed hard on him, but she just couldn't push herself to act as though SHE was
the one betrothed to this man. "Where are we going?"
"To my palace, of course. My court physician, Adelora Markion, may be able to
help you." He hesitated. "If you will permit that?" He led her gently out of the
ruin and up toward the trees. "She is a priestess of the Healing Light, and I
thought...you seemed quite comfortable with her."
Belana blinked. A priestess healer named Adelora? Yes, she wanted very much to
meet that woman! As they passed into the blessed shadow of the trees, she noted that
Gelleran drew his sword. Her hand went to her waist automatically, even though she
knew her sword had vanished along with Alastari. "Is there danger?"
"There may be," he answered, looking alertly from side to side. "We found a
boat drawn up on the beach around the point," a half-gesture indicated the rocky
point to the west of where Belana awakened. "It might have been fishermen seeking
shelter from last night's storm...except that there is no one to be found around
there, and fishermen wouldn't go far from their boat. I fear it is more likely
minions of the Gray Witch have landed on Kordos, and I will take no risks where you
are concerned!"

Not in Zuwayza:

The change from the sunlit courtyard to the shuttered interior of the house was
abrupt and extreme enough to blind Tankesh temporarily. He blinked impatiently,
trying to clear his vision, and blundered after the old man as soon as he could see
vague outlines. Furniture seemed to leap out and bite him in the shins. When his
eyes finally adjusted to the shadowed interior of the building, he saw that he was in
a long hallway with arches opening off both sides. The old man was just disappearing
through one half way down on the left. Tankesh hurried after him.
The room was bare and dark, lit only by a single candle, although the
whitewashed walls made it seem brighter than it actually was. The old man was
kneeling on the floor, which was of tile, white tile with black and red and gold ones
inlaid in a series of concentric circles. It looked too much like a target for
Tankesh's comfort; he supposed that was just his imagination. He hoped that's all it
was. He squinted at the symbols the old man was drawing in some of the rings, but
they meant nothing to him. Well, he didn't expect they would. Adie would probably
recognize them, though. Could he remember enough detail to describe them to here
when he got back?
The old man stood up cautiously, one hand on the small of his back. He pointed
with his stick of chalk to a spot in one of the outer rings. "Stand there, young
man, and ask no questions. Pay attention and watch for the proper place to get off.
This is simple, but not easy."
The elf stood where he had been directed and watched the old man take his place
in the center of the circle. "Proper place to get off?"
"When the rim of the circle passes through your world," the old man said.
Sliding his sleeves back on arms like withered sticks, he began to chant.
It was, or it felt like, several minutes before he saw the arch to the hallway
pass in front of him and realized that the circle was rotating. He glanced down, but
there seemed to be no change in the tiles under his feet. Back up, as a corner of
the room slid by, quickly followed by the next one. Definitely rotating, and picking
up speed, too. "When the rim of the circle passes through my world," he muttered.
"How will I know that, unless there happen to be landmarks in sight?"
The old man didn't answer. Tankesh hadn't really expected him to. The walls
blurred and vanished, to be replaced by a seascape with waves breaking on a beach of
white sand and on rocks farther out. A wave sliding inward at the end of its course
dampened the toe of one boot. Pleasant looking, but nothing familiar. Another blur.
A forest of standing stones lit by bluish light from two moons, both near full, and a
smell of fresh-spilled blood. A blur. A true forest, trees like columns reaching
into a green darkness overhead, mist, and a smell of things growing and dying. It
called to something in his elven heritage, but it was not where he needed to be. A
blur that seemed to last longer than the others, there was a hesitation and a pulsing
red light half way through it. Something they weren't going to stop for. Just as
well, that light looked like it might be fire. A large vaulted chamber, the image
wavering slightly and indistinct at any distance from his apparent location. Voices
speaking akhadic. He tried to step out of the circle, but it was like moving through
cold tar. The view began to blur, and he forced himself outward, throwing himself to
the floor outside the circle in a dive.
It seemed to take forever to fall, his motion slowed to the point where he
wasn't even sure he was moving at all. And then there was a sort of soundless click,
and the floor came up fast and hard, knocking the breath out of him as he hit and
rolled.

                             Notes from the arena champ.

Thank you, kind Zorpunt, for not killing me. I'm officially immortal and it feels
great. My manager is especially pleased as I'm his first +5 Attack guy (or is that
man?) to graduate. I'm off to Darkholm to join many of my manager's other warriors.
There's a Large Spinny Guy there that I think I'm related to, so I'm interested in
fighting side by side with him. I'll be there for a little while and then it's over
to Gateway ASAP.

                                      SPY REPORT

It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last
week's fights. Say good-bye to THE ASININE, as they are pushed from the coveted top
team spot by the KRILL CAVALRY stable. Advancing in the rankings was AUSSIE KILLERS
who went from last turn's 27-28-2, to this week's record of 30-28-3. Hey everybody,
watch out for TAZZY TIGER, who flew up 18 points in the rankings after mashing
VENOMOUS CONCUBINE like a melon. Keep your eye on this gal. And falling like a
basher in the top ten was JESSIE JUNE, who dropped 7 points after a disappointing (to
say the least) bout with SPANKYTIME. Our battling duelmaster HUGE TWIRLING MAN has
managed to hold the title, fending off CURTIS JOSEPH's none too subtle advances.
Better luck next time, THE MC5. 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so
try and avoid aiming at that location.
But enough of that bunch, let's get on to the wimps who like to avoid battle!
Here's a song for you: Who's afraid of the big, bad THE ASININE? Big bad THE
ASININE. Big bad THE ASININE. ZORPUNT's afraid of the big bad THE ASININE. Tra la
la la la! For those of you who like math, try this one: THE ASININE + Weapons That
go Boom = BATTLEMANIA + Avoid City. And who is this ORESTES you ask, with 23 points
and a 2-2-0 record. Ooh, the tales I could tell!
Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha
Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). Big deal, so CEO got mashed in the Dark
Arena. With his face he was more at home with the trolls than with us. (Waka waka).
Proving again that ZORPUNT is not rated G, CONE SHELL of the AUSSIE KILLERS slew the
warrior HOFFA in a rather bloody bout. Let's look for a bloodfeud. Here's some
advice: warriors with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the
Isle.
I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of
you whom I have not offended yet. Well, there goes another Spy Report. Good luck in
next week's fights. And remember, you can pick your friends and you can pick
your--(loud boos), oh, you've heard that one already!-- The Unknown Spymaster

Aimer -- Looking for some cheap wins I see. My little gal pal Penok is becoming real
interested in you, I'd start avoiding her if I were you. -- Old Man Winter

All -- One skill per turn just won't cut it, CEO is planning to take his chances with
some night-fighting. Even if he wins he knows he'll never fight after graduation.
Damn shame too, he's not bad on paper: 11(2)-11(1)-11-17-16(1)-6-17, good damage, +2
Init/Def. He only learned his first Adex last turn.... -- Darkfist

Jessie June -- Something tells me that you'll end up eating offensive-types for lunch
one day.... -- Spankytime

Tellar Fleet -- What can I say? I'm young and full of vigor! -- Penok

Dick Cranium -- Dang will check, I almost had you. We'll meet again. -- Penok

Cone Shell -- Hmm, really sucked up those skills, didn't you? But how could you have
learned initiative and defense when I displayed neither? -- Trisha Wingfoot

Eastern Brown -- Absolutely not! -- Tellar Fleet
P.S. Besides, brown is boring. I like it better when I trimmed it with red--blood
red.

George Clinton -- I bet you say that to ALL the young women you meet! But no, thank
you. -- Jessie June
P.S. Actually, I rather enjoyed getting the bloodfeud revenge on you, even if it was
accidentally.

Tazzie Tiger -- Make good use of those skills, but don't kill any of my teammates, or
I'll come back to chase you down an alley, young woman. -- Flitter McGee

A Convicted Thief? I can see how he was CAUGHT, but how could he do anything for
which to be convicted? He's so DUMB. -- Tombo Lark

Spankytime -- I couldn't just stand there, you know! It would be against the
tradition of the steel magnolia. -- Jessie June

Citizens of Ghea (only the ignorant fail to note Lirith Kai is not in Alastari),
no new day is rising, but the sun is setting on just another beautiful evening.
While you were sleeping, an irksome rabble has entered the always fair Aruak City.
Of course they fought alongside our warriors, most not so treasured, as all
gladiators do. They drank with themselves, and slept with themselves. Whether they
had masks, who cares.
Warriors, don't be afraid. For years Aruak has been one of the safest cities in
Ghea, and that custom has been continually cultivated, and will continue to be by
those who have called it home for years and those who live, fight, and die by the
same ethics. There is no contest, nor has there ever needed to be one for many
years. A conflict of personalities has arisen, and the city has been 'invaded' by
pests.
Any rules that are annouced will be purely for the joy of the lemmings' own
little world. Those who are being targeted have no interest in participating except
to defend the integrity of an arena that is different from others. Whether you
choose to come to Aruak, do it for your own reasons, not theirs.
Competing in Aruak City has never been for the faint of heart or the weak willed.
Combat is combat, wherever you go. Blood will flow as always, and now many innocents
will be caught in the middle, but those who defend Aruak's traditions never target
those who bring respect of Aruaki customs with them to our home.
So ignore the private ranting announcement brought by the stuporous
Frothingsloshers. If you choose Aruak City, do not choose it for an unsanctioned and
bogus 'contest', choose it for the tradition. Choose it because Aruak is different.
