Aruak City:

"First, gather information," Adeolar muttered. It was one of the basic rules
that the more information you had relevant to your problem, the better your chance
was of solving it. She frowned at her gilt-framed magic mirror, twisting a lock of
hair thoughtfully as she considered how to make best use of it. It was still
working, after a fashion, but the reddish film tainting the glass was stronger. It
confused the images, and she suspected that it also indicated something more
dangerous than misreading a scene: that the spell which it embodied was being
contaminated by blood magic, as well. Contaminated, and maybe distorted, maybe even
subverted. Did she dare use the mirror spell now?
Did she dare NOT use it? She needed information to plan her campaign against
Khaldren. She shook her head and wiped at the red-tinged glass once more. She would
just have to--
     "Ma'am?"
She glanced over her shoulder as Segallion Sundancer, one of her warriors,
looked into the room. His countrywoman Nila was with him.
"Nila and I were wondering if we could help, ma'am. You being a sun priestess,
and us being temple staff of the Sun Temple on Korvant Isle, well, we thought we
might be... compatible."
"Oh. Hmm." Adie frowned, her fingers automatically going to one of her curls
and twisting it as she considered the possibilities. The worship of the sun as
performed in the western Karian states was not at all like that of her own tradition,
but it might work. It might, at least, be worth trying. "Perhaps," she said
finally. "Let's set it up this way: I'll start on my own, and if I don't need your
help, you keep out of it-- It's too dangerous to mix in if you aren't needed," she
added sternly as Segallion opened his mouth to protest. "But you be READY, and if I
need help, I'll signal you." Maybe she would, but maybe not. It WAS dangerous, and
neither gladiator had achieved Shelia Greywand's immortality yet. But she understood
the need to be helpful, and she might not have to make use of their aid.
When both gladiators nodded agreement, she turned back to her mirror.
Carefully, with every aspect of the spell observed meticulously--something that
wasn't necessary under better times, because spells were normally all of a piece and
could "take a hint," as it were--she began the incantation that would activate the
mirror. The surface shimmered crimson silver, glittering and trembling. This was
NOT the normal behavior of a mirror spell! It felt as though she was trying to lift
a great weight with her mind. She had never thought of the veil between HERE and
THERE as a weight before....
Abruptly the glass cleared, or nearly so, a reddish film remained. And there
was risen Krael as she had seen it before. But this time she was not interested in
the general view. It was an accepted law of magic that for every strength a magician
or wizard had, there was a corresponding weakness. Khaldren had come into the
present from Krael, and somewhere in that city she hoped to find a clue to his power
and his weakness.
There was the ancient city, mud-stained and battered by the centuries it had
spent sunk beneath the Trier. There the survivors, moving about their tasks which
seemed inexplicable but must be linked in some way to Khaldren. She selected one of
the better-dressed men and began to follow him through the ruins. His course was
erratic, she thought at first it was to avoid the obstacles presented by the city's
decrepit state. But he climbed over the mound of rubble that represented a fallen
wall, and splashed through a knee-deep pool of water and mud. There were easier ways
to get from one point to another, so why...?
The man met up with another, handed over a... she couldn't see what, a crystal
of some sort, and sat down on a stone to wring out the hem of his robe. The other
man set off across the rubble. With a cold shock, Adie realized that the movement of
these men, and others in Krael, were themselves parts of a spell.
What kind of spell would be produced by somatic components on such a scale? A
very powerful one.... Were the other "risen cities" involved in this? Celestinvael
had been mentioned, and Old Valamantis. Adie turned her mirror-sight to the south.
She was marginally aware that behind her the two gladiators began to dance and
chant.

Near Ardivent:

Master Cho, former manager of the Bluvalley Warriors of Ardivent and Chan Chi
Monastery of Khalhums, sipped his wine and nodded approval. "Very good. Quite
drinkable, in fact."
Fandil, former manager of the Fandils, laughed and poured wine into his own cup.
"Like you wouldn't drink it anyway, you old bandit?" He sobered. "What brings you
down from the mountains, Cho? The rumors about Celestinvael?" The ancient city lay
in the forested no-man's-land between Ardivent and the Delarquan Federation, and
woodsmen had been bringing tales of marvels and minor disasters for weeks now. That
it was a matter for concern, a matter that would bear watching, was undeniable, but
Fandil had seen nothing to indicate that it was urgent.
"Celestinvael is enough to worry about," Master Cho answered, nodding, "and it
is indirectly what brought me here. If you think about what the city was like in its
last days...! But my immediate concern is young Adeolar up in Aruak City."
"I may be retired," old Fandil said stiffly, "but I'm not COMPLETELY out of
touch, Cho! Adeolar is a very competent woman, and Kennelworth is not worried about
her--he'd have mentioned it in his last letter. She can handle anything she's likely
to meet."
"No doubt... one on one. But that fool Khaldren has invoked and involved
wizards from a dozen centuries. Not all of them will work together--as well try to
get cats to run in step! But some will, and can she handle two, or six, or ten, if
they're all working together?"
"Ah." Fandil was silent for several minutes, stroking his beard slowly as his
mind raced. "Ah. That could be... bad. Very bad." He set his wine cup down
carefully. "You're quite right. We'll have to assist her, or at least be ready to
do so. Now?"
     "What better time?"

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

"Zorpunt, your attention please! I present to you your current Duelmaster, and all
around great guy, the most dangerous one, CROCONAW!!!!!"

"Thanks for the intro Wartortle. I see your warmup act has really prepared the room
for my show tonight."

"Don't mention it Crockie! It was the least I could do considering I lost our bet
and so owed you this deed anyway. Who'da thunk you could actually down that many
chickens in one sitting?"

(Chuckles) "Tortle, you don't know the half of my abilities. My kind are a skilled
lot, and not only when it comes to eating, if you know what I mean!"

"I sure do Croconaw, last turn you become the youngest Duelmaster in Zorpunt history!
A feat so great, so immense in it's achievement, that only a man like you would be
able to accomplish it."

"Now now, I don't think I am actually the youngest ever here...I think I heard the
quote 'Youngest in the modern era'. I also heard 'most handsome', 'wunderkind', and
'a helluva man' over the last week, so much praise that I would've almost blushed,
but I'm so used to it. By the way Tortle, what happened to you last turn anyway?

"Well, I took a tough loss to Tombo Lark, a warrior with vastly more experience than
me, and the only warrior who has beaten you from Zorpunt to date. Noble's tactic for
getting me the first attack worked - he didn't tell me I wouldn't hit my opponent
automatically!"

(again chuckling) "Tortle, that Noble will only tell you what you absolutely need to
know - and only if it's good news. When is he coming back around anyway?"

"Well Croc, he sent letter a week ago saying he'd be by to pick some of us up for the
next tournament, but we'd be on our own other than that."

"Good good, I like when he's away...mice will play and so forth. Speaking of
that...you didn't leave Gyrados in charge of cooking duty tonight did you tortle?"

"I believe it was his turn...hey what's that smoke rising from the West?"

"Time to cut this show off 'Tortle so we can go rescue our stablemates! Zorpunt, we
shall return for next week's show, when the guest will be...whoever will appear for 1
gold coin or less, and a lovely parting gift."

                                      SPY REPORT

If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
ZORPUNT brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Of course, we're all terribly
impressed to see WARTORTLE win a fight and gain 20 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, JOE
POOLE beat TIGER SHARK and TIGER SHARK lost 13 points. You're breakin' my heart.
And if variety is the spice of life, ZORPUNT may be getting bland, as CROCONAW stays
top dog in the city. I'm not in a very good mood today, but why am I telling you
this? You want to know what's new, don't you, ZORPUNT?
Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys.
What's the big D? 13 YRS & COUNTING was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily
livered... grumble... mumble... curse... And it looks like WATER DECK avoided them
the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Ooh, I'm
frightfully impressed, TOMBO LARK was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch
that ego swell, sports fans.
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for ZORPUNT's
morgue. More variety. Honor is like a chainmail shirt, it only shines through use.
Certain nameless cowards will doubtless rebuke me on this one.
There's got to be a better place in ZORPUNT to get a drink than The Warty Toad!
Any suggestions? Just wait 'till next time I show up here, I won't be so nice! So
nyaaah! I see the crowds are getting restless, I must leave now-- Snide Clemens

                                     DEATH FEST

The ferocious ghosts of former glories whispered across the wind swept sands of
DM 59; agonizing incessantly due to the diminutive demise of the Delarq arena known
as Illis.
Tattered banners and forgotten memories wailed in the wind for a dynamic death
march to dawn once more upon the blood stained sands of the Delarq slow arena.
The distant call crying for a declaration of restoration amidst the ruin of the
all but forgotten Delarq arena carried to the far corners of Alastari; drawing the
Devious, the Diabolical, the Dangerous and the Down Challenging to cross blades and
wage warfare among an assemblage of new stables managed by the Known and Unknown;
willing to spill fresh blood, while carving their destiny during 15 Rounds of contest
driven combat to be known as the "Illis Incredibly Diabolical Delarq Death Fest".
A lone cloaked figure huddled by lamplight in a remote outpost near the
crossroads of ElseWhere and ElseWhen; feverishly formulating the foundational
framework for the dawning of the Delarq Death Fest in DM 59, complete with
Gladiatorial Commission sanctioned prizes to promote the growing thirst for a Delarq
Slow Arena Death Festival.

Delarq Death Fest Opening Round debuts the first turn immediately following the
Summer 2004 F2F Tourney and continues through the completion of 15 consecutive
rounds.
Death Fest points are Won or Lost ONLY in the DM 59 Delarq Slow Arena [Tourneys
DO NOT Add or Subtract from the Death Fest Point Scoring System]:

Death Fest Scoring Format:
Win =3D +2 pts
Loss =3D -1 pt
Kill =3D +5 pts [in addition to +2 pts for Win]
Death =3D -3 pts [in addition to 1 pt for Loss]
Dark Arena Kill =3D +10 pts [in addition to +2 pts for Win]
Dark Arena Death =3D -5 pts [in addition to 1 pt for Loss]
Revenged Blood Feud =3D +5 pts [successful Revenged Blood Feud provides Death Fest
contestants the opportunity to cancel out 3 pts for Death and 1 pt for Loss; while
gaining +1 pt overall for the Revenged Blood Feud in addition to the +2 pts for Win]

DEATH FEST PRIZES will be awarded to the Top Ten Death Fest Stables on the basis
of Total Points*** accumulated during the 15 rounds of competition as follows:

1. Favorite Weapon Knowledge for 1 (one) warrior ranked Initiate or higher on the
Final Round to be revealed by RSI to each of the Top Ten Death Fest Stables
2. Renaming of Dark Arena Monsters and NPCs [yet to be determined according to how
many DA Monsters and NPCs are available in DM 59 for Renaming]
3. The Top Five Death Fest Stables will receive New Team Rollup Certificates as
follows: 1st (10), 2nd (8), 3rd (6), 4th (4) and 5th (2)
4. Renaming Illis Arena for 6 months plus Receiving 6 months Free Play courtesy of
RSI will be awarded to the manager of the 1st Place Death Fest Stable
5. Discussions are underway regarding a possible Special Award granted to the Illis
Iron Stable qualifiers who compete in 67 of a possible 75 fights during the course of
the 15 consecutive rounds of the Death Fest [Key Factor is How Many (?) stables will
be competing in the Death Fest without drawing away participation by current managers
in the remaining slow arenas!] Therefore, it is important for all managers entering
stables in DM 59 for the upcoming Death Fest to contact RSI as soon as possible
regarding their participation in this contest so that a Final Ruling on the proposed
Illis Iron Stable Award can be issued by RSI.

***TieBreaker is determined on the Final Round by the DM 59 Newsletter Recognition
Rankings. The stable with the Highest Ranked Active Gladiator is granted the
decision. [Example: Warrior A and Warrior B are both listed in the Recognition
Rankings with 87 pts; however, because Warrior A is listed in the Recognition
Rankings ahead of Warrior B, then Warrior A is granted the TieBreaker Decision for
His/Her stable!]

Opening Round Team Spotlight Bonus [minimum 15 paragraphs!] Each Delarq Death
Fest competitor who writes a Team Spotlight featuring their Stable (Name) and
Managerial Alias [Gladiatorial Names Optional] in regards to competing in the Delarq
Death Fest will receive 25 pts added to His/Her opening round score.
Illis Iron Stable Bonus [in addition to the proposed award awaiting RSI
approval!] Any manager whose stable competes in at least 67 of the possible 75
fights during the 15 rounds of Death Fest receives 25 points added to His/Her final
overall score [this allows each stable the cushion of missing one round of
competition; plus up to 3 additional fights due to waiting for replacement rollups
from Deaths suffered either in Tourneys or during the Death Fest contest in DM 59
over the course of 15 rounds of competition!]
