Adeolar wrestled with the spell, her entire attention concentrated on it. The mirror spell was PASSIVE, it shouldn't be doing this! She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, then stepped back mentally from her work. Magical devices were no different than mechanical ones in some ways, they could get "stuck" on a certain phase of operation. The mirror spell had simply gotten "stuck" on looking at Krael. All she needed to do was deactivate it, then start over with a different target. It was a simple matter. It should have been a simple matter. She couldn't shut the spell down. She took another deep breath and ran through the shut-down sequence again. There were currents of unformed magic swirling around her now, and most of them were from sources she would not touch. Blood magic, from the arena. It seemed to be working against her, reinforcing the mirror's resistance, if such a thing was possible. Dammit, the mirror wasn't alive, it didn't have a will, couldn't consciously resist...but that's what it felt like. Or that someone she'd been looking at had sensed the spell, seized it from the other end, and was trying to use it to look at HER. She was distantly aware of power--not a lot, but some, enough to help--coming from outside her and reinforcing her efforts. More distantly, she realized that it was Segallion and Nila. That power she could use. She wove their offering into her own efforts and made a third attempt to shut down the mirror spell. The resistance continued, maybe increased. It was hard to be sure, because her head was beginning to ache with the effort. Not good! If she made a slip through weariness, the spell could escape her completely. Another strand of power, faint as starlight but just as pure, joined with hers. Absolutely precise. Familiar. Shania! The united effort bore down on the critical points of the mirror spell. Not the points SHE had chosen. *I can't hold this link for long* Shania thought to her. *But without it, I couldn't have reached you at all. The high magics are fading with the Eyes, Adie. Soon they'll be gone--* "Leaving nothing but blood magic and petty witchcraft," Adie agreed grimly. "I know." *It's worse than you're thinking.* Shania's thought was urgent. *When there is no high magic, there will be no protecting circles, demons will be unbound, all the things that Sheila Greywand holds at bay will be loosed on Alastari! Gates will open as though they'd never been sealed. ANYTHING could get loose! There are residual traces of Old Chaos in Alastari, and if they aren't bound--* "Disaster!" It didn't occur to Adie to doubt Shania's assessment. In matters such as that, the elf seeress was unmatched. "But without high magic, how can we hold the bindings? You don't suggest WE use blood magic?" *No. Everything done with blood magic is tainted by it. Even for a good end... the result will be twisted. Always.* Adie was aware of Shania's shudder of revulsion. "There aren't a lot of other sources--" *I have a plan--it would take too long to explain now.* Shania's mental voice was fading. *I'll be there soon.* The link between them shivered. *Break the mirror!* She was gone from Adie's mind. It was an effort for Adie to focus outward and look at the mirror. The reflective surface was a sheet of blood! She couldn't disentangle her mind completely from the spell and realized that the mirror had gone beyond resistance and it--or something using it--was actively attempting to trap her. Easier said than done! Most of her mental barriers had been lowered to work the spell, but she slammed them back into place. Which was more difficult than it should have been, but she DID manage it. Her warrior Segallion staggered toward her, sword drawn. Adie saw that Nila had collapsed behind him. Had they been seized by the spell, when it lost its grip on her? * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 245): MISS STEP of LADIES IN WAITING (Crip, mgr.) Once again, I bested that wily Veteran Mercenary to hold on to the throne. He did dodge or parry five of my attacks last turn so he put in a better showing, but not good enough. I do fear my next opponent will also be a stand-in as arena membership has plummeted to a new low since our arrival, and the closest non- Water Deck warrior that fought was Great White who is a full 64 points my lesser. This will give me 30 fight experience total, and I hope to enter the tournament at a 13-1 record, and the throne of Zorpunt on my resume. If I can only fight half as well as my reputation I should do pretty well! Tentacruel notched his first victory this turn with a tough fought win over Joe Poole. He's looked better in each of his last few fights, but the tournament will likely tell Noble a lot of what he needs to know about this warrior's overall ability. All of us will again join the fray this turn with the exception of Gyrados. After the tourney, we might let 'Tortle and Goldeen have a few turns off to rest, but e do still plan to participate in the duels here over the coming months so don't count us out. Free dueling helps in that decision making process too.... That's it this week, troops! Keep your spirits up, and the best to all of us representing fine Zorpunt in the tournament! Croconaw SPY REPORT Good day, friends and fiends, welcome to your friendly neighborhood spyreport. I doubt ZORPUNT will ever be the same. And let's see, GREAT WHITE SHARK fought TELLER FLETE and gained 10 points and contributed to AUSSIE KILLERS' 2-0-0. TELLER FLETE has lost to GREAT WHITE SHARK, falling 9 points, while helping make KRILL CAVALRY a 2-3-0 turn. Defending his title for another turn, CROCONAW kept ZORPUNT's warrior, KUNG-FU MASTER, from claiming the throne. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing fighters do dishes at The Swinging Aardvark until they win. Maybe? He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose for good reasons. My mama told me that one. AUSSIE KILLERS has cause to stand tall, as they were ZORPUNT's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And guess who avoided AUSSIE KILLERS stable the most? Believe it or not, it was STAR DRECK. Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that JAMES T. JERK from STAR DRECK was ZORPUNT's most challenged warrior this turn. A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to be true. A brave warrior does not carry a red shield, he has nothing to cover or hide when the fight is over. Consider well. Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the sweetest. Well, I'm burning daylight here in ZORPUNT and I've a long road ahead of me. Happy Trails. Hammer felt a certain sense of satisfaction as he studied the ghoulish grin spreading across the face of Lord Lian Ki Na-Sul; proud Arena Master of the once dying Illis Arena, as the DM 59 Arena Authority signed the Gladiatorial Commission papers authenticating the arrangement agreed upon by the two parties presiding. "You and the Gladiatorial Commission also drive a hard bargain," Hammer replied as he reflected upon the prospects of Delarq Tor DM 58 being re-opened as a Slow Arena with at least 20 New Stables by the Managers who fight their stables at least 67 times out of a possible 75 during the 15 rounds of Death Fest. "I also notice the clause that for Delarq Tor to be open Exclusively for 6 months to the New Stables managed by the Illis Iron Stable Award Winners that there must be at least 15 stables Active each cycle. That is a fair bargain for the opportunity to battle for the Duelmaster Throne each of those six months before Other New Stables are allowed to enter Delarq Tor." This was a Golden Opportunity for both Veteran and Newbie Managers to pave a new frontier of Delarq history by qualifying their Death Fest stables in DM 59 with 67 fights out of a possible 75; then for the price of running a stable in a Regular Arena, continuing to be Active in DM 59 and sending a New Team Roll Up to be a part of "History in the Making" when Delarq Tor would re-open for its First Turn as a Slow Arena on November 3rd, 2005. Death Fest would conclude on T-186 August 25th, 2005 allowing the Illis Iron Stable Award Winners enough time to be registered with the Gladiatorial Commission; whereupon they would be able to submit a New Team Roll Up to the GC to start a New Stable in Delarq Tor; be able to fight those New Gladiators in the Rookies 2005 Fall Mailer Tourney; then begin competing for the DM 58 Duelmasters Throne in Delarq Tor right out of the gate with the November 3rd 2005 T-1 Debut Opening Round. Hammer of the First Part had also negotiated with Lord Na-Zul of the Second Part an agreement that All 10 Dark Arena Monsters and 17 NPCs Characters be re-named by the Top Ten Death Fest Finishers. [See DM 59 T-171 Newsletter Team Spotlight by Hammer for the complete listing of Dark Arena Monsters/NPCs and the Official Death Fest Designation for which Top Ten Finishers re-name which characters!] Lord Na-Sul could not hide his delight at the prospects of Death being re- delivered to his once dying arena during the Delarq Death Fest; the DM 59 Arena Master agreed that these Death Fest Prizes were but a Small Exchange in Comparison to the Profits to be made by the local Illis business merchants and surrounding community from the Anticipated Influx into Illis by the Veteran and Newbie Managers/Gladiators/Stables seeking to make History in the Delarq Death Fest.
