"Have you noticed anything...odd about Teller Flete lately?" Limpette glanced
over her shoulder quickly to make sure the subject of her question was nowhere in
earshot.
"Lately?" Tombo Lark shook his head, putting one hand under his teammate's arm
to urge her farther down the street. "Not LATELY. He's been odd since he met the
konep, died, and came back in a new body." He dropped his voice to just over a
whisper. "I wonder whether it's really the same person after all, you know.
Different body, different personality, what if he only got Tellar's memories and not
his soul?"
Limpette nodded quickly. "I knew it! Evil magic."
Tombo considered this for a moment, steering a course through back streets
toward the waterfront. Everyone went to the waterfront when they wanted to talk
these days. There was just as much strangeness there, but seemed less threatening,
somehow. As though the lake itself was still sane, and the sanity bled onto the
land. "I don't know," he said finally. "Maybe it's evil magic, and maybe not.
Maybe it's just that...trying to come back to life without.... Doing it in a
unsanctioned fashion, not with a Dead Tourney, and not with, well, Lady Sheila must
have safeguards. But whoever helped Teller...I don't know if he--or she, of course--
even THOUGHT of maybe needing safeguards."
"That's just as bad as being deliberately evil," Pine Leaf said, appearing
quietly on Tombo's other side. "A lot of harm is done by sheer carelessness." She
frowned at the waves that rippled in and slid up the sandy slope, then sank into the
ground. The Trier didn't have much in the way of tides, maybe a foot of difference
between high and low, but you could tell how high the water came at what passed as
high tide. Up to that point, the beach was sand. Above that point, it was...
shattered colored glass or crushed gems or something. It was WRONG.
When Pine Leaf had been silent for several minutes, Limpette said, "So, what can
we do about it? If it isn't deliberate evil, I mean."
"It doesn't make any difference what the INTENT was," Pine Leaf said. "It's the
effects we have to live with."
"Yes, but what do we DO?" Limpette demanded. She felt helpless in the face of
the magic that was gripping Zorpunt, but surely Pine Leaf could make a suggestion or
two! Pine Leaf KNEW things.
Pine Leaf shrugged. "Do? You want to take on that wizard who has even the
priests, even the nobles, even the Arenamaster obeying his every whim? That is not a
job for ungraduated gladiators!"
"Yeah, but what if there isn't anybody else?" Tombo asked. "Do we just stand
aside and let the wizard do whatever he wants? He's taken over Zorpunt, and you know
he won't stop there. Unless someone stops him. And we're the ones who are here...."

Aruak City:

If Segallion and Nila were under the control of the spell or spellcaster who had
seized her mirror, then they had to be stopped. Without needless injury--they had
not chosen to do Khaldren's will, after all. But her own mind, though free from
outside control, was weary and slow. She was fumbling as badly with her spells as
Segallion was with his sword. There wasn't going to be TIME for her stop him gently.
A word of Command formed on her lips.
The warrior staggered into her so that they both fell in a tangle of flailing
limbs. And his sword struck the blood-faced mirror, splitting the frame and
shattering the glass.
The glass exploded away from the mirror stand, bloody shards flying outward on a
wave of sound so shrill as to be barely audible. If Adie, Segallion, and Nila had
not all been on the floor, they might have been badly injured, even killed. Was it
chance that they were all below the deadly glass? Adie thought not. They were each
worshippers of the sun in their different ways, and she suspected the hand of the god
in their survival.
Rolling away from Segallion, Adie sat up, brushing at her hair and her robe
absently. When the mirror broke, she had felt a shadow lifting; that was the first
she had known that there was a level to the enemy spell below the obvious. She
shivered. She hadn't even suspected that deeper spell, and it could have done...
anything, it had taken her so completely by surprise. But she would not be surprised
a second time.

On the road from Ardivent:

"Health, humility, and honor will not solve all problems," Master Cho said
flatly. He had rejected the idea of hiring a horse and was making surprisingly good
time for an elderly-looking man on foot. "You know that as well as I do, Fandil!
Sometimes you need cunning, as well, and a willingness to take losses."
"I know that." Fandil the Wise sounded testy, and in truth he was very
irritated. On the most immediate level, by Cho's present attitude and by the ease
with which the Adantri kept up with Fandil's horse. "But young Adeolar is not a loss
I'm prepared to accept."
"Of course not, or why would we be rushing toward Aruak City instead of sitting
at home with beer?" Cho squinted at the forest on their right. There was a bad
feeling to it today. Most of the land that lay between the environs of Ardivent and
the beginning of the Aruaki lands was forested. Despite the hunger for agricultural
land in Andoria, no one had made an attempt to clear this forest and put the land
under the plow. Nobody offered reasons, it was just "not done." It didn't take a
master of the subtle arts to figure it out, though.
     The forest was haunted.
Through a sweep of land twenty miles wide stretching from near Lyratilan to near
Mordant, the forest concealed a scattering of ruins. Not the Van ruins of northern
Andoria, or not entirely--who could know for sure at this late date? The ancient
city of Celestinvael was the best known in modern times, but there were other things
hidden by those dark and tangled trees. Maybe worse things. Things that might be
wakened by the same spell that was stirring Celestinvael.
It was not a situation to make an old man sleep soundly at night.
"I just hope we're in TIME to help Adeolar," Cho muttered.
"She's strong and skilled," Fandil protested. "Our fears may be completely
unfounded!"
"So you'll back Adeolar's young strength and skill against Khaldren's ages of
experience and cunning? I hope you're right, because at our best pace," he glanced
scornfully at Fandil's horse, "and with no problems, it'll take us two more days to
get to Aruak City."

Skaithvarn:

Shania Silverstar did her best to be patient, but it seemed to be taking Ashon
Chang so LONG to negotiate with the ship captain! She glanced around at her
companions, wondering if she could have organized her resources better for this
frantic rush back to Alastari. No, probably not.
Vurand and Jammies were keeping both eyes on Herlas; the Fratsfan mage hadn't
given them any trouble...yet, but he might. He would, when he thought he had a
chance to win. Werre was organizing their luggage and supplies (desperately slim
now) as fast as they were off-loaded from the mules. Zakar...she didn't know what
Zakar was doing, and she wasn't sure she wanted to. He was on their side, more or
less, but...today had seemed to be a "less" day. And Rughal was at her side,
supporting her as weariness ate at her bones.
Ashon Chang was gesturing them forward to the ship. Before Shania could gather
her strength to walk, Rughal lifted her and carried her down the dock. "It is
agreed," Ashon Chang said. "This man, Kaldinar, will sail us across the Trier to
Zorpunt."

                                      SPY REPORT

So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and
I'm going to give you a spy report!. We now have a new top team for all of you guys
to dogpile on. KRILL CAVALRY now holds the crown and they are betting they can keep
it. Hey everybody, watch out for TOMBO LARK, who flew up 14 points in the rankings
after mashing GREAT WHITE SHARK like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. Ya know,
some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. GREAT WHITE SHARK was defeated by
TOMBO LARK and drops 10 points. Well, everybody's pal WARTORTLE moved his record to
10-4-1 by defeating VETERAN MERCENARY in the Duelmaster's Title Bout and gaining 7
recognition points. 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and
avoid aiming at that location.
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the ZORPUNT arena. And hey,
kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid AUSSIE KILLERS, please raise you hand. Wow.
Does ZORPUNT really have that many liars? For those of you who like math, try this
one: AUSSIE KILLERS + Weapons That go Boom = WATER DECK + Avoid City. Well dang
howdy, but if challenges were votes, GYRADOS would be president. Although it may be
a contest he doesn't want to win.
Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha
Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). Too bad 13 YRS & COUNTING won't be eating
any crow this week because of LITTLE GIRL CRUSH's bloodfeud passing. Why? No
bloodfeud, no fowl (Drumroll, Groans). Ask not the elves for counsel, for they will
say both yes and no. Silly buggers, eh?
Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in ZORPUNT have no
sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. C'mon, Leadfoot, let's make some
tracks. Hasta la bye-bye. (Loud choruses of 'Beat it, ya bum!')-- The Unknown

Stonefish -- I don't see how you can swim, being made of stone. It seems unnatural.
Unless you're pumice, that floats. Are you? Hmm. It says here you're a golem,
given your name, I take it that means a stone golem? Is your manager one of these
wizard types to go around animating stones? And who did the carving? Very good

work, really life-like scales and little finny things on the sides of your head.
Come over to our place--to the stable, not the guildhouse, because you don't want to
run into Teller--and tell me all about yourself, eh? -- Tombo Lark, feeling gossipy

Boo -- Stupid Orc! I was laughing at you! You're a joke! A wretched little squatty
with an overbite--I laugh! -- Teller Flete

Captain Insano -- You are well named, sir! Those strange little cries and the
monkey-gestures! Totally distracting, I commend you on an underhanded (but legal)
strategy. I could not focus on the fight at all. -- Pine Leaf

Gods! That Cult Member! What IS his cult, anyway? He was impossible to stop until
I lucked out and caught the cord of his pendant with my sword. That seemed to give
him some kind of shock, but, gods! Did you SEE what happened when it hit the ground?
I nearly died of fright when the demon came out. -- Joe Poole, still shaking

Joe -- But was it a demon? I thought demons were, well, taller, with horns and
hooves and stuff? That looked more like (gulping) like a Siamese-twinned octopus on
a bad hair day. THIS isn't the wizard's doing, is it? I mean, it's just a cult,
right? We can fight a cult without getting the wizard after us, can't we? --
Limpette

'Pette -- I wouldn't count on it. What if the cultists are ALLIED with the wizard?
Wouldn't it be just LIKE him to enlist those sickoes? -- Tombo

Croconaw -- May you fare well on the Isle, and watch out for the stone golems! -- all
the warriors at Krill Cavalry (except Teller Flete)

desperately need help with this. What I need are style, favorite rhythm (ex.:
hi/low), favorite weapons, and tactics. What would be great is if you could send me
a copy of the invite with the warrior's name, id#, and arena blacked out. This way,
I can verify that this is an actual warrior. Minis will work, too!

For those interested, I have both a challenge style vs. style and a match-up style
vs. style chart. There's about 250 fights calculated in these charts, and I'll be
happy to send a copy to anyone who asks. You can contact me (if you're a free world
player) at: Rick Stringer, Merit/East, SCI, P.O. Box 500, Georgetown, DE 19947-0500.
If you're in prison, just send a diplo to: Baphomet, Mgr. Knights Templar (568), DM
#47--North Fork. (I also have a lot of other charts and info for anyone who wants
it.) Thanks!

The total number of fights calculated was reported as 250 fights. This is a
misprint. It should have read "over 2,500 fights." -- Baphomet
