TEAM SPOTLIGHT
+ ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ A Dark and Stormy Night ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +
Lightning danced across the heights of the Hurinwood behind the town.
Teller Flete stood at the window and glared out, the room dark behind him.
Nothing moved but rain. So far. Soon, there would be something, someone else.
Storms always brought the Cat out. He had seen it, actually seen the Cat itself,
twice, and he'd seen its tracks and its kills several times. People talked about it
in hushed voices when they talked at all. They seemed to think it was a demon.
Maybe it was. So what? He fancied the idea of having a demon for a pet....
There was movement.
Teller leaned out of his open window, heedless of the rain. What was a little
rain at a time like this? There was someone in the narrow street that ran along the
side of the guildhouse. Some ONE, not the Cat. He could tell that by the way the
man moved. Something familiar about the movement...ah! The rolling gait of a
horsemen or a sailor. And a tall man. Not tall as a Shew, but taller than normal.
A flash of lightning closer to the town lit the alley briefly. Long enough.
Barkhaotai, the Ambitious Guard! If his ambitions extended to catching the Cat,
Teller would have to deal with him. And, after all, what was one dead Rirorni that
anyone would care? They would probably put it down to the Cat, anyway.
Teller eased himself through the window and dropped to the ground, then
straightened to his full height. The terms of his arena contract stated that he was
five feet eleven inches, requiring him to take two feet off his true height.
Hunching wouldn't do it, he had a spell to make up the difference. A lot of people
associated with the arena didn't realize that. They'd be in for a shock if they met
him now....
Teller followed the Guard. The man seemed to have a definite goal in mind, and
it wasn't the city governor's compound where he normally worked. The wizard had
taken over that; some people were upset, but Teller didn't figure it mattered. Not
to ordinary people. The wizard never bothered HIM, and the fights were more exciting
now. Especially the night fights. Impressively gory if you liked that kind of
thing, and he did. If the wizard was in the government compound, did that mean the
Guard worked for the wizard now? That was a thought to make any man pause. Teller
had no desire to cross the wizard. At least, not until he had the Cat in his
possession.
The Guard was working his way to the inland edge of town. The Cat's hunting
ground. So he WAS after the Cat! The question remaining: was Barkhaotai working on
his own, or was he on the wizard's business?
*** ***** *** ***** ***
Meanwhile, on the waterfront, all was quiet and dark. Except for the drumming
of rain on cobbles and roofs and the chinks of lamplight that escaped the shutters.
Basically, quiet and dark.
A woman screamed. A door slammed open, spilling light and a tangle of the
tavern's customers onto the wet pavement. The knot of arms and legs began to unravel
itself into individual people who slipped away down one alley or another.
A dog, standing a lonely watch on one of the ships tied up nearby, began to
bark.
The Great White Shark surfaced and swam to the foot of a ladder, climbed
quickly, and accepted the hooded cloak Stonefish had ready. Neither gladiator spoke,
but the Shark nodded once as it pulled the cloak around its pale body. They crossed
the paved waterfront, avoiding the spill of light from the tavern door, and merged
with the shadows.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
No doubt Boo could have handled a goose, or even a Duck, but not ME. I am
something quite SPECIAL and not often met with. And I say to Boo, Ha!

SPY REPORT
The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon ZORPUNT, for
I, Novgorodny Vir, have returned! CHARM CITY had cause to celebrate, after LORD
BALTIMORE got 23 points by beating TRISKAIDEKAPHOBIA. Win some, lose some. Speaking
of which, LORD BALTIMORE was winsome, after beating TRISKAIDEKAPHOBIA and seeing it
lose 22 points. KHALHUMS DWARF found out that ZORPUNT isn't a democracy. You've
gotta be the best to be Duelmaster here! Word has it one team in ZORPUNT is taking
speech lessons to try to bore their opponent to death. I'll bet it works.
My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter.
But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! Is it charming personality?
Conversational abilities? Good oral hygiene? Whatever it is, JOE POOLE is the most
challenged warrior.
Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! Ask not a
spymaster for counsel, for he will pontificate long after you have fallen into an
unconscious stupor.
Do not think spyreporting in ZORPUNT is the highlight of my life. My fingers
tire and I fear my incessant prattling may cause unfair judgement upon my impeccable
character. ZORPUNT, I leave you now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at
The Dripping Blade. 'Til next time-- Novgorodny Vir

Triskadekaphobia -- You just HAD to do that, didn't you? Now I've got no choice but
to regard thirteen as an unlucky number. -- Ghost of Tombo Lark
Y'know, this "Fratsfa Slave" is kinda sad. He's Aruaki, you can tell by his furry
pointed ears, but cats just shouldn't BE that humble. The Fratsfans must've really
done a number on him. They should be hung. And buried in a cat box. -- Joe Poole
Stonefish -- I never SAW such a fish for getting under foot! Every time I stepped
clear, you squirmed over and got right back under my feet. -- Pine Leaf
Lord Baltimore -- Did you know your wife's a cake? Fact. I have the recipe. At
least, I think it's here somewhere.... -- Limpette
That's it? No personals from anybody but us last time? So few active warriors, so
few fights, that there were PERSONAL ADS on the FRONT PAGE? That's Bad. -- Leeta
JFX -- At least I made you work for it! -- Jessaro Dra, once of Mordant
Joe Poole -- My master expects you to pay for the skill I taught you. The going
price for an initiative routine is half an eagle. -- Piatri, slave of Arsanj of
Fratsfa
P.S. It would have been more if you'd gotten a rating at the same time.

Azereth has returned! I am the manager for Scarlet Blades in DM 25. I was a member
of the Crimson Alliance and the Crimson Brotherhood (which was composed of former CA
members). I've been out of the game for many (at least 5) years. I would like to
hear from anyone who remembers me, as well as any Alliance that is seeking to add
experienced managers to their roster. Contact me at:
