Stonefish did what he was best at: he sat still, blending into the background.
Not that this background needed much blending; in this pouring rain, nobody was
peering closely at anonymous lumps in the shadows. There hadn't been anything to see
yet, at least, nothing he could firmly label "significant," but that was okay. He
was patient. That's why he had this job, and not Shark's.
The Aussie Killer wasn't sure why Gilbo Shortaxe had come to him. Stonefish was
no Dwarf-lover, and he didn't know anybody in Khalhums. You'd think he would have
gone to another standby. They stuck together, mostly. The gladiator's fishy stare
remained fixed on the dark building at the end of the alley. Still, since this was a
problem that could be said to BE with another standby, maybe--
There was a brief flash of light, dim and greenish, from the doorway of the
cult's temple. From long practice, the Fish didn't move, didn't even tense. That
was not the way to catch dinner. Not till it got close, whatever it was.
Not a man, not even a Dwarf, it was too short. Three feet tall at the most, and
it didn't move like a man. Gilbo had mentioned monsters...maybe this was one. The
Stonefish hoped so. He'd like to meet a monster. He almost rippled his spines in
anticipation. He would like to see how a monster handled his poison....
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
The Great White Shark glided to a stop, peering through the inky water. Night
was not a good time to hunt, but he knew something was there. He could smell it.
Something...bleeding. Or bloody, yes, not injured itself, whatever it was. The
injured stirred the water differently. Another hunter, one who had just killed. The
Shark bared teeth like a wall of blades. A hunter who has just killed is often off
guard.
     Perfect.

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail and well met warriors of ZORPUNT! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. LIMPETTE caught the eye of many in
the gladiatorial commission as she skillfully bested STONEFISH and was awarded 28
points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, LIMPETTE put down
STONEFISH, causing him to lose 18 points of recognition in the process. Our last
turn's Duelmaster has lost, folks, lost to KUNG-FU MASTER, and GREAT WHITE SHARK has
made the way for a new Duelmaster! With GREAT WHITE SHARK clearing the throne, KRILL
CAVALRY of LIMPETTE takes a proud seat as ZORPUNT's new Duelmaster, by virtue of
recognition points. Informants "close" to the city champion have told me that he
never fights without pantyhose on beneath his armor. Watch out!
Many and various are the arts of battle. In ZORPUNT "art" is a word that has
long since passed from the language! ZORPUNT, city of gladiators! Mighty among the
names of thy guilds is KRILL CAVALRY, a guild shunned and avoided by many in the
weekly duels. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent
the better part of last week avoiding KRILL CAVALRY. Indeed it was RESCUE RANGERS.
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears
arms. One thing is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a
stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise
are angered by the same thing only once. Zontani Sharp Eyes

Oozing Sore -- Well, what did you expect? Next time, don't go picking at the scabs.
-- Trina Lark
P.S. Since you're neuter but not a golem, I'm almost afraid to ask where the sore
is....

Stonefish -- For someone whose main trick is to lie there and pretend to be a stone,
you were all OVER the arena. I just couldn't seem to get away from you. This was
not necessary. -- Pine Leaf

Lord Baltimore -- I didn't find you particularly charming. So there. -- Limpette

Monty -- Remind me never to be rescued by you. I don't go for those "cave man"
tactics. You're too rough! -- Joe Poole

Poop Slinger -- My sister might think you're funny, but she's weird. I think you're
fairly disgusting. -- Bubba Jones
P.S. But then, I blush when sailors talk about the poop deck.
P.P.S. You have to like me though, as I am very charismatic.

Battle Royal 4
The Battle Royal arena contests are one of the purest tests of manager skill
available. The rules are simple. The scoring is simple. The updates are live. If
you would like to participate, simply get a team ready in Talcama in the next month
and announce in the personals that you're in. The prize is bragging rights and
having your name along side previous winners (Doc Steele, Manray Frothingslosh, and
Manager). It is a brutal contest, but it is a lot of fun!
Basic rules: No avoiding other contest teams. Score = Wins + Kills - Losses.
Only fights against other BR teams count. First team to 25 wins!
BR4 begins in Talcama (DM 18) on turn 502, due on Jan 29, 2005.
     Visit http://www.geocities.com/assurnasir/br4 for more information.

                                FACE-TO-FACE XXXIV

Our next Winter Face-to-Face will be held on Martin Luther King weekend, Friday
through Sunday, 14-16 January 2005, at the Embassy Suites in Tempe, Arizona (4400 S
Rural Rd--this is the same hotel as last year). Room rates are $139.00 per night,
1-4 occupancy, which includes breakfast. The rooms are blocked. The reservations
number is 480-897-7444; tell them you're with the "Reality Simulations Face to Face
Convention" block. Our room block will be released in mid-December, so please make
sure you reserve your room before then!
Room rates include a full cooked-to-order breakfast and a complimentary two-hour
manager's reception. There is a free shuttle to the airport, as well as free parking.
The hotel is located down the freeway in Tempe. All rooms have high speed internet
(for an extra charge). There is a fitness center, jacuzzi, and pool, and of course a
bar and Mexican restaurant inside the hotel. And there's Denny's right across the
street. Look for transportation info in the tournament information sheet.
The tournament information sheet/strategy sheet should be out sometime in late
November/early December.
If you haven't been to a Face-to-Face before, you're overdue. If you have,
you'll be back. Don't miss this one, it'll be a blast! See you there!
