He had been afraid--no, he was afraid now. In the tree, he had been terrified. Of falling. Of failing. The old mage gripped his arm, held one hand to his mouth briefly to signal silence, and then pulled him away from the ravine, deeper into the forest. Higher up the mountain. After several minutes of silent walking, or at least walking without speech, Elosjon figured he could risk speech. "What about Redbud?" he whispered. "We keep going," Fandil said. "She may, probably will, be fine. And she's doing a necessary job so that we can go forward and do a different and even more necessary job. Let us not waste her efforts." "Right, right. The magician at Mountain Home." He hesitated. "I could be wrong about Mountain Home. I only have the word of Herlas of Zensu and he's, well, his reputation isn't exactly--" "I feel sure that you ARE correct," Fandil said. "All my instincts tell me so. We will find an answer up there on the mountain. If we get there soon enough." Elosjon was silent for several minutes, trying to work that out. Finally he said, "Soon enough?" "Eh?" Fandil brought his thoughts back from a great distance. "Oh, certainly. That magician has a plan in progress. Now, plans are like snow on a mountain: They build up and build up, and suddenly they reach the point where they become an avalanche. Building pressure can be dealt with, but once you have an avalanche, all you can do is try to survive until it's over. If we can reach our opponent before his plan becomes an avalanche, we can--probably--stop him. After... we can only hope to pick up the pieces." "Oh." Elosjon stared into the darkness, not total darkness because some moon- and starlight filtered through the trees, and thought about that as he walked. This old man, who had been a magician for longer than he, Elosjon, had been alive was messing up all his preconceived notions of what it actually meant to be a magician. There seemed to be a lot more luck, and a lot more responsibility, involved than he had expected. He wasn't sure he could handle it. That thought made him pause. Was he going to give up, then? No! He would do his best, the very best that was in him and maybe just a little more, and either he would survive the effort or he wouldn't. But no quitting. It was almost a relief to make up his mind like that. The path they were following came out of the trees into an open area. A ghost town, abandoned buildings, overgrown yards, a rutted street. Elosjon stopped. "This used to be the village of Mountain Home," he said. Fandil stopped beside him and looked around. "Odd," he muttered, sniffing the air. "There's something here, or has been recently." "What? And how can you tell?" The younger mage sniffed too. It smelled like an animal's den, a little. Maybe fading. And something else. Sulfur? Recognition came with a cold chill down his spine. "A demon?" "In general terms, yes. I think so. Something from that neighborhood, anyway." Fandil was silent for a moment, his head cocked as though to listen. Elosjon listened, too, but the only sounds he heard were made by the wind rustling the brush and tapping on the roofs. Unless there was something he was missing? He listened harder, so hard that his ears rang with the silence. If there was a real sound, he wasn't hearing it. "Not here now," Fandil said. "If there was something, what would we hear?" "Depends on WHAT there was, but... scratching. Clicking. Maybe grumbles. Which way is the castle from here? We should go on before the 'watchdog' returns." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 312): PEARL HARBOR of SMITHSONIAN (Curator, mgr.) It's great for me, The Unknown Spymaster to be back in ZORPUNT. Hope you enjoy the show. Oh, who am I kidding? I already got paid! Hey everybody, watch out for SERGEANT3, who flew up 15 points in the rankings after mashing VETERAN MERCENARY like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. Well, everybody's pal PAUL WIEDORFER moved his record to 16-1-1 by defeating TCHENI LOY in the Duelmaster's Title Bout and gaining 4 recognition points. Can you believe they are paying me 10 gold to deliver this stuff? Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the ZORPUNT arena. Well dang howdy, but if challenges were votes, LORMIN GARDE would be president. Although it may be a contest he doesn't want to win. Was it guts or an overtaxed mental capacity that had SERGEANT 2 challenge up 32 points in the rankings to take on LORMIN GARDE? Some advice to SERGEANT 2. Please don't challenge up 32 points to fight a 17-16-0 fighter like, say LORMIN GARDE. (Okay, so it may be a little late). Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the most interesting, though! ICE STORM says to his dog--'Who should I fight this week?'. Dog says 'SPYMASTER'. So the guy dies. Moral? Put lying dogs to sleep. Ask not the elves for counsel, for they will say both yes and no. Silly buggers, eh? Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in ZORPUNT have no sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Okay, so I may not be the world's best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. And remember, you can pick your friends and you can pick your--(loud boos), oh, you've heard that one already!-- The Unknown Spymaster DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME PAUL WIEDORFER 4876 16 1 1 118 MEDAL OF HONOR J4 (496) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME LORMIN GARDE 4854 17 16 0 93 KRILL CAVALRY (403) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SERGEANT3 4872 12 5 0 82 MEDAL OF HONOR J4 (496) TCHENI LOY 4868 13 13 2 71 KRILL CAVALRY (403) SERGEANT 1 4886 8 1 2 70 MEDAL OF HONOR J4 (496) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BUBBA LOY 4853 11 22 0 55 KRILL CAVALRY (403) SERGEANT 2 4887 6 3 0 55 MEDAL OF HONOR J4 (496) TCHACK LOY 4856 10 21 0 51 KRILL CAVALRY (403) TCHUMP LOY 4871 7 15 0 36 KRILL CAVALRY (403) -TWISTER 4888 4 0 0 35 DISASTER (497) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -LISA ANN 4824 2 0 1 33 MINGALOIDS (486) WILD FIRE 4880 2 0 1 33 DISASTER (497) SERGEANT 5 4890 3 0 1 32 MEDAL OF HONOR J4 (496) -EARTH QUAKE 4885 3 1 0 26 DISASTER (497) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn.
