Beltran Foss turned the thing over in his hand, but it still looked like an
ordinary piece of ginger root only very dark brown. "THIS is the Dark Root that is
causing so much trouble in other arenas?" It didn't feel woody, which is what he had
first expected. More of a firm but fleshy feel that made him want to throw it away
from him in disgust. He controlled the impulse and looked a question at his
teammate.
Quia Salian shrugged. "That's what I was told."
"It doesn't look like much."
"Part of its insidiosity," Quia said. "It doesn't look dangerous, so people get
reckless. At least, that's what *I* think."
"Mmm." He looked down at the root, then back up at Quia. "How did you come by
it? Surely it wasn't just handed out casually on the street?"
Quia looked away from his gaze, and a slow blush mounted from her shirt collar
to her hairline. "I, um, just asked a guy I knew if he could, you know, get some. I
was curious, is all. I didn't expect him to actually BRING me some."
"Curious?" Beltran felt like shaking her. Hard. "So, tell me, have you tried
smoking khugas because you're CURIOUS? Have you--" Now he did throw the root from
him. "Setting aside all other questions, such as the stupidity of getting involved
in ANY WAY with a dangerous drug, have you considered what Leeta will say?"
"Well, we don't have to TELL her, do we? After all, it isn't like I'm going to
use the stuff. It was just a whim. Just...research."
"And how did you PAY for this, Quia?"
"I didn't have to pay for it. He just gave it to me." Her eyes shifted again.
Beltran's hackles stood straight up, or, in the words of non-werewolves, the
hair on the back of his neck stood up. This time he did grab Quia and shake her.
"You IDIOT! I suppose he told you that 'maybe later you could do him a favor'?"
"Well...so what if he did? If I don't use the root, I don't owe him anything,
do I? I mean, I can give it back."
"You're a fool," Beltran said. "You shouldn't be let off the leash, ever!"

I believe you spoke too quickly, or maybe too boastfully, Theodoric. Not that I
blame you. Anyone is justified in boasting of a win. Maybe next time.

SPY REPORT
Greetings, Warriors of LYRATILAN. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to
give you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. FUNKY FOLK had
cause to celebrate, after ROBIN BANKS got 19 points by beating BLOODSHED. Win some,
lose some. Speaking of which, ROBIN BANKS was winsome, after beating BLOODSHED and
seeing him lose 16 points. Those who hoped for a new Duelmaster were disappointed by
RICK O'SHEA, of FUNKY FOLK, who despite a 10-4-1 couldn't overcome LYRATILAN's Number
1. So who's the team that's been walking into taverns last week and ordering milk?
Sounds like a PR stunt to me.
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas?
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... The manager at FUNKY
FOLK must have some new strategy for sending FREIDA SLAVES, a warrior with 3-1-0, to
the Dark Arena. Watch this space! Ask not a spymaster for counsel, for he will
pontificate long after you have fallen into an unconscious stupor.
Do not think spyreporting in LYRATILAN is the highlight of my life. As the
seasons change, and the creatures of the wild change also, so do I feel a yearning to
leave this place. Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for
