Fratsfa:

Lenpro looked around at the misty vistas of the park, at the two weathered
benches, and then at Lady Fern. "Here?"
Fern sat on one of the benches and looked up at him. "Of course, here. Surely
you didn't expect the wife of Emperor Alonj to come to the Flower Shoppe? The rumors
that would start--! No, no, trust me, this is better."
Lenpro shrugged. She was probably right, but he didn't feel like admitting it
just then. He looked around at what he could see of the park. Lawns, flower beds,
trees and statuary set with equal care. No people on this chilly morning. No place
for eavesdroppers and spies to hide. Okay, it was as safe a place to meet as they
were likely to find. It was also early, and cold, and damp, and the bench was not
the most comfortable he'd ever sat on.
Movement caught his eye. A woman alone--no, not alone. There was an older
woman with her, and two men, but they kept back a little. Chaperon and guards. The
woman was Fratsfan to all appearance, tall, blonde, and regal-looking. Coming toward
them. As she neared, he saw that she had slanted eyes, not in the elven fashion that
some Fratsfans did, but after the Adantri style. And if he needed further
confirmation of her identity, she wore a sword as though she knew what to do with it.
She strode over to the benches, nodded once to Lady Fern, and faced Lenpro, saying
nothing but raising one eyebrow in question.
Lenpro blinked, wondering how to start the discussion. He hadn't expected it to
be this hard, and she wasn't being helpful here. He took a deep breath. "We need
Emperor Alonj to take over as head of the Andorian League," he said.
     "No."
"The king is dead, no heirs, and Alonj is best placed to step into the role."
"No! Alonj has no desire to govern more than he does now, and this is work
enough for any man. Find someone else."
"I truly believe there isn't anyone else who could do the job," Lady Fern said.
"Only Emperor Alonj has the legitimacy to avoid a civil war."
The Empress Kitiara sighed and sat on the other bench. "I know. We can see the
situation as well as you do, I suppose, and we've talked about this. And about
personal choices and public duties."
"Then you can see the need," Lenpro said. "Without a firm and accepted hand on
the reins, the Andorian League will fall apart."
Kitiara looked at him for a moment. "Is this bad?"
Lenpro stared, shocked at the question. This woman was from a highly placed
family in the Empire of Lirith Kai, and she could question the value of a unified
government? "Of course it's bad! Without the League--" He groped for words.
"War between Convincia and the Clanholds?" she suggested. "Raltuman piractical
raids on Ardiventi shipping?"
"War between the Delarquans and the Karnhorns, fought across Andorian lands,"
Lenpro countered. "It's the united strength of the Laague that keeps them from
encroaching."
"I could argue that," she said, "at least about the Delarquans. But I suppose
this isn't the time for it."
Lenpro bit back the argument he'd been about to start and nodded. Later for
that. "You said you'd discussed this with Emperor Alonj. What conclusions did you
come to? What are you--is he--prepared to do?"
"For now, probably about what you want him to do," she said, grimacing. "Take
over central authority in the Andorian lands for the duration of this emergency. And
yes, we know that 'this emergency' is actually a complicated situation with may
different problems running together. And immediately organize responsible people to
start considering ways to resolve the individual problems once things are
stabilized."
"If he remains king of the League, that will solve the--"
"No, it won't. A king over the Andorian League is just a bandage over too many
cracks in the structure. It needs to be FIXED," she said.
     "What cracks?"
"Divisions and distrust between humans, elves, and Aruaki, for a start. The
running sore of the Assassins' Guild. The drain of too many of the best young people
through the arenas into death or the Isle--"
"That one is beyond our fixing," Lady Fern said. "As we've discussed before:
once the Gladiatorial Commission enters a country, it does not leave. Let's focus on
things we CAN change."
"Andor," Lenpro said. "That's where we have to start."

                                      SPY REPORT

It's me, The Unknown Spymaster, back to give you this week's Spy Report. Sit
back in your seats and we'll have more fun than a barrel of Zontanis. Hey everybody,
watch out for WORKER BEE, who flew up 5 points in the rankings after mashing HAPPY
PEASANT like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. And falling like a basher in the
top ten was BEE BEE KING, who dropped 1 points after a disappointing (to say the
least) bout with GRIFLET IRVEL. Unlike most arenas, STAN DAUFF managed to get his
challenge off against the 15-14-1 ELINDOR IMARDA. It's a proud day for the THE
MIDDLE WAY 4 stable, as their warrior, ELINDOR IMARDA, ascended the Duelmaster's
throne. Advice to bashers--never force anything, just get a bigger halberd!
Here is other news that is of note. Did you hear that THE MIDDLE WAY 4 was most
avoided team this week? Well, knowing the personal hygiene of THE MIDDLE WAY 4's
warriors, I'm not surprised! And you guys like to boo me? Well, unsling your
rasberries, cause FUNKY FOLK beats feet every time THE MIDDLE WAY 4 smiles at them.
Try farming, eh? Well just about everybody wants a piece of X. ROLPH TUPP, who was
this week's most challenged warrior. Can any one out there say 'weasel'? Oh well,
just saying PHIL ANDERER will do. He challenged 22 points down to trash X. ROLPH
TUPP. Definition of petty: PHIL ANDERER subdued X. ROLPH TUPP, a mismatch of 22
points.
Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the
most interesting, though! Here's some advice: warriors with little wit and will may
encounter problems on the trail to the Isle.
I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of
you whom I have not offended yet. Okay, so I may not be the world's best comedian,
but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. And remember, you can pick your
friends and you can pick your--(loud boos), oh, you've heard that one already!-- The
Unknown Spymaster
