Skaithvarn:
The Lord Dankilvan had given them temporary quarters in his mansion. A suite
among the servants, but that was okay, the decor was less overpowering.
Berdan looked around at the nearly plain hangings that covered the walls of the
central room in the suite and scowled. "I don't like this," the ex-assassin growled.
"Sequestering us! This Dankilvan is up to something."
Raoul shrugged, took off his hat and looked at it, then put it back again. The
gesture didn't mean anything, but it gave him time to think about his answer without
being rude. And he was really tempted to be rude. Berdan was repeating himself.
And the gladiator was getting tired of repeating his answer. But one more time...
maybe it would get through this time. "Lord Dankilvan is trying to keep Skaithvarn
out of Alastarian politics. Can't blame him for that! We don't want that
entanglement, either."
"He's sending a Delarquan spy with us--"
"A Delarquan gladiator who may or may not be a spy. So?"
"She'll be a spy. Everything we do will be reported to this--"
"Are you planning to do something you want to hide?" Jeri Northwind asked.
Berdan jumped a little, having forgotten that she was there. "No, but--"
"Then it isn't a problem. In fact," she exchanged a glance with Raoul, who
nodded slightly, "in fact, it's a good thing. It means the S'varni won't have to
worry about what we might be up to, because they'll know what we ARE up to."
"Right, doll. And besides, better the spy we know and can see than one we
don't. Surely you realize that, Berdan?"
The ex-assassin sighed and shrugged. "I suppose so."
*** ***** *** ***** ***
Hallie O'Dene turned out to be an elf. A southern elf, a dark-skinned Shagornan
elf, an elf of the kind deeply distrusted by the northern elves who figured in the
ancestry of all Fratsfan nobles.
Berdan refused to have anything to do with her. "And how Dankilvan, himself of
the High Blood, could actually employ her, trust her--!" He stormed around their
sitting room, not quite throwing things but looking as though he wanted to.
Hallie O'Dene watched quietly, showing no offense, nor any other reaction except
mild interest. Leaning just a little toward Jeri, she asked, "Does he have a strong
heart? Because he's a prime candidate for apoplexy right now."
Jeri put a hand over her mouth to hold back a snort of laughter. "I don't know
him that well," she admitted, "but fortunately, we can do this without him if we have
to."
The Delarquan's eyebrows rose. "You think he might abandon the mission just to
avoid working with me?"
"He might, doll," Raoul said, coming to sit between the two of them on the
room's long couch as Berdan continued to rage up and down the room, cursing Hallie,
Raoul and Jeri, Peranis, Dankilvan, and other people they'd never heard of
comprehensively and bitterly. "That doesn't worry me so much as that he might quit
us and try to go on without us--go into competition with us over it. How much can we
trust him? The man used to be a spy and an assassin, after all."
"Well, it's as good as a play," Hallie said, "but Lord Dankilvan wants us to get
ON with things. Maybe we should try to stop him?"
Raoul shook his head. "He's got to get through it, doll. But maybe we should
get on with it ourselves. Jeri and I are ready to go--we didn't unpack when we got
here."
"Leave Berdan to follow when he calms down?" Jeri asked.
"Or go back to Andor, if that's what he wants to do." Raoul shrugged. He
glanced at Jeri, who jumped up and grabbed a backpack.
"I'm ready," she said. As soon as Raoul and Hallie had picked up their packs,
she added, "What's the matter with this Leemith place that Lord Dankilvan mentioned?
He didn't seem to like them at all."
Hallie led the way out the door. "I've got horses waiting for us," she said.
"The Leemin, well, they're all vampires. Generally good neighbors, but still, you
just don't trust a town full of vampires, do you?"

SPY REPORT
Greetings, Warriors of CALEAM. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to give
you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. GOLDEN CANYON? Who?
HEADBANGERS is the top team these days, buddies! What's a move up by 5 you ask?
(alright, maybe you didn't ask) Cause for celebration, according to HEADBANGERS.
SOULS OF BLACK posted a nice gain, to come in 3rd. Everybody loves a winner...
SOULS OF BLACK had cause to celebrate, after MAUREN got 16 points by beating
TRUSTWORTHY SCRIBE. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, AMBITIOUS GUARD was
winsome, after beating DIESEL and seeing him lose 13 points. Can you believe it?
SAPPER apparently has better things to do as CALEAM's Duelmaster than show up and
fight! Now I can't insult SARINA, as she has gloriously dueled to the top. Oh great
new Duelmaster!!! (Stop me if I lay it on too thick) Word has it one team in CALEAM
is using psychics to predict wins. They lead a charmed life!
And how sociable are CALEAM's warriors? Come, let us see. Like the noble eagle
soaring amongst the mountaintops, so stand the warriors of SHERWOOD FOREST, alone and
unchallenged. Like a pup with its tail between its legs, HEADBANGERS scurried away
from SHERWOOD FOREST. Oh, the shame! Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes, and
KORIBUS is it right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't GOLDEN CANYON proud! Take
heed CALEAM, of the unprincipled action of MR. GRINCH. By challenging MISS PRISS, 23
points below him, MR. GRINCH besmirches the noble art of dueling. MR. GRINCH bested
MISS PRISS with a point difference of 23. So this is what CALEAM calls a duel. This
will make an interesting tale. Them's the breaks, RED RUFFLES. Expecting fair
challenges from HEADBANGERS is evidently too much to ask. Warriors of CALEAM! Do
you wish your reputations tainted by the base challenge of AMEE? Do my ears deceive
me? MOTHER SUPERIOR (outclassed by 27 points) challenged RAZOR BACK, in what
promises to be a fight.(!) It's not whether you win or lose, but how many points you
get (6). Right, MOTHER SUPERIOR?
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... Hey WARCKERS! Is
there some deep dark, unmentionable secret as to why DEATH has been sent to the Dark
Arena? 5-2-0 isn't so shabby! Like a tattered, worn-out, faded, out-of-fashion
garment cast out to rot, SAILOR MOON of SHERWOOD FOREST has been summarily sent to
the Dark Arena. SPYMASTER in the Dark Arena wasn't enough for TROUBLE of WARCKERS.
Maybe that certain serving girl(?) at The Warty Toad will be! The manager at
WARCKERS must have some new strategy for sending ABSORB ALL, a warrior with 6-3-0, to
the Dark Arena. Watch this space! Congratulations, AMEE. The manager of GOLDEN
CANYON should have sent RED RUFFLES to the Dark Arena for having a 4-6-0 long ago.
Death in the arena! In a cheap quest for a cheap victory, AMEE faced RED RUFFLES in
an uneven fight. GOLDEN CANYON, we expect bloody revenge! Oh hard! that to strike
a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting!
All good things must come to an end. As the seasons change, and the creatures
of the wild change also, so do I feel a yearning to leave this place. Like a mixed
metaphor, and an overtaxed simile, I now bid CALEAM farewell-- Novgorodny Vir

PERSONAL ADS
SablonoVlad -- I started in this arena around turn 200.... I know memories are bad
in old warriors who have taken a few too many hits to the head, but.... I really
haven't been running much in the last six months, turned out my team was on
maintenance and had racked up a pretty big negative balance (record and account
money). I had my glory days around turns 280-320 graduated some nice warriors. --
The Annalist
Leeta -- Looking at the top warriors in ADM...P-Strike and Strike and Bash are not
highly represented.... I am trying to graduate all ten styles so the 'because they
are there' is my excuse, especially when you look at the skill subtracts and
rhythms.... I had a 17DF Aimer for a while (did TREMENDOUS damage) big fun but not
the 9 WT.... I have great designed WOS but my records aren't good with them.... I
have a couple of godlings in Sunset on the same team, all 3 died.... -- The Annalist
Luck to everyone at the Mail-In!
Red Ruffles -- My, my, my, they ARE red! Get off your back girl! -- Amee
Sailor Moon -- Do you think we could just fight every week? -- El Grincho
Sapper -- You could have at least made me feel like I had a chance. Well done and
congrats on the throne. You deserve it. -- Dio
Aiksu -- Boy, we sure are going to have a score to settle with you in a bit if you
keep this up. -- Sablon-O-Vlad, manager Headbangers
Absorb All -- Yeah, I guess you did...sigh...0-4...if only you could see my
numbers.... -- Z.Freak
Leeta -- I agree, our arena does normally look sad. Any thoughts on how we could
liven it up a bit? Perhaps a contest here? Sure, why not? -- SOV
Koribus -- That's not what I hear, "big boy". -- Amee
Amee -- You do realize, don't you, that it's much harder to wash bloodstains off red
ruffles than it is off a purple robe? Because it's so hard to see them when they're
fresh. -- Red Ruffles
Son of a Gun -- Well, shoot, I even managed to deflect your sword twice in one move,
and it STILL wasn't enough. -- Little Nugget
Nickel -- But what if I'd rather have dimes? -- Sarina
P.S. No, seriously, that was a good match. I'm a little surprised that I won.
Diesel -- Ack, the fumes! -- Koribus
Trouble -- I abhor trouble and uncouth disruption. -- Miss Priss
Amee -- (mustering his courage) Er, right! How about dinner? -- Koribus
Dio -- Not before we've been properly introduced! -- Sarina
P.S. Fighting in the arena does not count as a proper introduction.
The Annalist and other people who might send an email to Livia@reality.com for some
reason -- I tend to delete whole rafts of junk emails without opening them. (They
come in rafts and hordes, you see.) Put something immediately identifiable in the
front of the subject line (such as "DM") and you're more like to get through my
ruthless, first-thing-in-the-morning-before-coffee trashing. If anyone has attempted
to reach me and not gotten an answer, that is probably the reason, and I apologize.
This has been a bad season for junk for me. For some reason everybody and all his
girlfriends and all their cousins have been trying to sell me prescription medication
over the e-waves, and, really, all I use in that way is the occasional aspirin! I
wish they'd stop. But I digress. My point, back at the beginning, is that I don't
leave emails unanswered deliberately. Just make sure I realize it's a DM-related
email, okay? -- Leeta
P.S. Of course, if you do NOT wish to email me for any reason, you can disregard
this notice.
31 October 2003
Come one, come all, to the greatest contest in Alastari! The Third Annual Turf
War will be in North Fork (DM 47) starting in about 6-7 turns.... C'mon and get your
team some experience, and get declared!

Let it be known far and wide, that the Warrior TUM 18-7380, the Champions Runner-Up
for the recent Tournament, is managed by none other than Shocking Toad. I named this
fabulous warrior after my friend and mentor, TUM, a.k.a. Don! Sorry TUM didn't get
me my first TC; however, a runner-up with all those sandbaggers is pretty impressive,
if I do say so myself. -- Shocking Toad, The Manager
13 November 2003
All -- This is to announce that I am no longer a member of the Vendetta Cartel
Alliance. I have enjoyed my time there, and I've made some great friends. Their
company will be missed, but they will endure. I wish them well. -- Apex
