Skaithvarn:

Raoul didn't much like this Kaldrehn, or trust him at all, but there was nothing
he could do right then. And many people, especially wizards, were arrogant and self-
centered without necessarily being bad citizens. Well, amend that to "most wizards
were arrogant and self-centered, and SOME of them were not bad citizens...."
"So having escaped the destruction of Krael, you're going to settle down to a
meditative life in Skaithvarn?" Hallie O'Dene asked.
The Kraelian laughed with genuine amusement. "Do I look like a man for the
meditative life?" His gaze went around the inside of the tower, and his lip curled
in scorn. "This is a way station, nothing more. As I was the adviser and kingmaker
in Krael, so shall I be in the world that now is."
     "Krael is drowned--" Jeri began.
The wizard shrugged. "There are other kingdoms. The current one in that area
is now called Andoria, is it not?" He looked toward a shadowy stretch of wall where
a crude table stood; there was a thick black book on it. "I shall rule Andoria in
all but name...."
Raoul looked at the book, too, and groaned inwardly. That would be the one
Peranis had stolen, the infamous Black Book in which the never-to-be-sufficiently-
damned Assassins' Guild had recorded all the secrets it could find that would allow
powerful Andorians, nobles and rich merchants and military figures, to be blackmailed
or coerced. With that book, a clever man COULD rule Andoria...at least for a while.
They would have to get it away from Kaldrehn and destroy it.
But on the positive side, it would no longer be necessary to visit the vampire
city of Leemith. And there was only one of Kaldrehn, whereas Hallie had told them
there were thousands of vampires in Leemith.
"Not every powerful man in Andoria is corrupt!" Jeri burst out. "That's just a
small fraction of--"
"There will be enough," Kaldrehn said calmly. "You would be surprised how few
points of pressure it takes to control a kingdom! And I am well skilled in that
art." The wizard crossed to the doorway and looked out.
Raoul's hand twitched toward his sword, then was still. He didn't like to stab
a man in the back, even one who deserved it as much as the Kaldrehn seemed to. But
he wasn't fool enough even to try against a wizard powerful enough to have moved
through time. The man probably had eyes in the back of his head, and short way with
would-be assassins. At least it seemed likely that Peranis had got all that was
coming to him.
"As soon as this storm ends," Kaldrehn said, "I will cross to Andoria. You
three will be my guides and servants. For now. But soon I must form my own coterie
of agents.... That should not be difficult, there are always, in EVERY land, those
who desire a measure of power and wealth, or revenge on the mighty, or simply someone
to lead them."
Raoul's face tightened. That was true, he knew. Not all greedy men were
Delarquan, just as there were honorable men who were not Andorian. He would get word
to King Mickeal as quickly as he could. And then he would form his own coterie to
contend against the Kraelians.

Call for volunteers, good guys and bad. A personal to Scribe or an email to
Livia@reality.com will do the trick.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Greetings warriors of Caleam. El Grincho, Duelmaster of the arena at your
service. Well, not all of you. Actually, only one more of you gets to fight the
Grinch, as I am off to the Isle as predicted this turn. Who would have thought 10
years ago that I'd actually make it.
Just a little bit of history for you. One year ago my first fight back in the
arena I had 5 fights, and fought Koribus. He smashed me like there was no tomorrow.
How the mighty have fallen.
I would like to take just a moment to thank the people who make this arena what
it is. Leeta, for being here week in and week out, Sherwood Forest for the good
competition, Warckers and Erratum as well. Thank you all, it has been my privilege
to fight with you all.
Best of luck all. I'm outta here!

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail and well met warriors of CALEAM! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes,
Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. SINISTROPHOBIA caught the eye of many in
the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested AMEE and was awarded 22 points in
recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, DIO put down SARMASSOPHOBIA,
causing him to lose 7 points of recognition in the process. Most watched of the
fights this week, the spotlight was on SARINA as she bore arms against the challenge
of reigning Duelmaster MR. GRINCH. Not for nothing has MR. GRINCH in the past laid
claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week he's proven his combat skill yet
again. Would you believe that over half of the old women in CALEAM seem to feel that
they could fight better than you gladiators?
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city CALEAM. My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in CALEAM these
days is SOULS OF BLACK. At least, most blades in town are looking to avoid them.
Apparently the stalwarts of WATCH OUT! are catching the bulk of jests down at the
challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Mighty fighters cannot but
expect competition from those below. LITTLE NUGGET take warning! You have more than
a few enemies in CALEAM. ZODIAC FREAK must really be harboring a grudge against the
GOLDEN CANYON guild! Merciless, 25 challenged down POPPA LODE points this week to
duel with he. Few would not have guessed the outcome of the bout as POPPA LODE was
overcame by ZODIAC FREAK. Is this what passes for courage in CALEAM?
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers
the miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
The girls are as pretty in CALEAM as ever I remembered them....and the fighters
as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed
a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise
are angered by the same thing only once. Zontani Sharp Eyes

Sarina -- Good fight. Just the way I like em'. -- El Grincho

Koribus -- I sure do enjoy the way you teach. How much more do you have to teach me?
-- Mountain Troll
P.S. And yes, I realize it sure would be funny if you killed me this turn. Not
like, haha funny, but funny none the less.

Poppa Lode -- Did you drop the "poppa load" there? -- Freak

Sapper -- Congrats on the ratings. You one bad dude. -- Amee

Little Nugget -- We should compare strategies sometime. Something doesn't look right
with us. Drop us a diplo if you are interested. -- Dio

Koribus -- What's up with the silent treatment, Big Boy? I thought we had something
nice going on. -- Amee

Sarmassophobia -- Well I was very disappointed to see Mauren drop against you. She
was probably the best all around warrior I have ever had on this team. Too bad her
replacement is less than stellar. -- Bremen

Melophobia -- I think I would have rather had the huge amount of skills you gained
over the win. Yikes! -- Chardon

De De Mao -- Was there a skill bonus this cycle fighting Souls of Black warriors?
Sheesh.... -- Aiksu

Mr. Grinch, El Grincho Sir, I gotta tell you, you're the goods. -- Sarina
P.S. You knew that, right?
P.P.S. Congratulations on graduating. Enjoy your retirement; that's what it's for.

Mountain Troll -- (confused look) I thought trolls were, you know, bigger. --
Koribus
P.S. Very dumb.

Zodiac Freak -- Okayokayokay. So your stars are great. Well, great. Take mine too,
why don't you? They're no good to me! -- Poppa Lode
P.S. You don't like my name? Tough cookies. Momma Lode likes it fine.

Dio -- (pout) -- Little Nugget

Phobophobia -- Well, at least you're not a headbanger. I thought we weren't going to
fight anything BUT headbangers this time. Ridiculous. We should have a chance to
lose to a wide variety of warriors. -- Miss Priss

ZalCon2 Updates (1/9/04)

The contest will be starting on the turn due February 23rd, 2004 and run for 20
turns.
Only one team will be allowed for each manager in the contest, regardless of
whether additional teams are announced as contest entries. No exceptions for any
reason.
The Style Master points should read that there is +1 point for beating a member
of your own style even if the warrior is not registered for the contest.
Rolling points for consecutive turns as Style Master means that your warrior
gets the extra point every turn after the first 3 that he continues to hold the
title.
The points for Quality Wins should be clarified to read the winning warrior is
ranked below by the number of recognition points needed for each bonus point at the
start of the fight. For example, Warrior A (3-2-0, 17) beats Warrior B (4-1-0, 35)
and receives 2 bonus points under Quality Win for the 18 point difference in the
ranking.
I believe that is all the clarifications for the moment, please feel free to
email, diplo, call or write me with any other questions or concerns about the
contest.

TOURNEY FREEZE CHANGE -- ADVANCE NOTICE

Beginning at the Winter Face-to-Face in Tempe (January 2004), we will implement
several changes affecting tournaments. The tournament announcement for the upcoming
FTF and future tourneys will reflect these changes.
First, we will eliminate the tourney freeze for all regular DM warrior classes.
Regular DM warriors will not be classed ahead of the tournament, but instead will
fight according to their FE on the date of the tourney. There will still be a freeze
for the ADM classes, occurring on the same timeline as before, approximately 6 weeks
before the tournament.
In addition to the above change, the warrior classes will be slightly altered.
The new tourney classes will be as follows:

DM Tourney Classes ADM Tourney Classes
              ======================              ======================
                  0 FE: Rookies Freshmen
                1-4 FE: Apprentices ADM
               5-10 FE: Initiates Eligibles
              11-20 FE: Adepts ---induction---
              21-30 FE: Champions Contenders
                31+ FE: Challengers Primus

All regular DM tourney classes will remain solely FE based. All ADM classes will
now be based on warrior characteristics (i.e., the ADM split algorithm), including the
Freshmen class.
The Gateway and Primus arenas will be merging before the FTF to form one top
arena. These warriors will be split into two tournament classes, the Contenders and
the Primus classes, again based upon their characteristics. More information on this
will be published in the newsletters for those arenas.
If you have any questions about the above changes, please contact Customer
Service. Good luck in your games.
