                             Notes from the arena champ.

Thank you, Sven, that was a generous move on your part. The win, the skills,
the title, and...graduation! I think I'm going to forego the Isle and open a
restaurant just outside of Caleam. I've got my eye on a site, on top of a bluff
overlooking the confluence (that's how us graduates talk) of the rivers. There's an
old stone manor house there, abandoned now but not in such terrible condition, and
I'm SURE it isn't haunted, I don't CARE what people say. Well, I do care because its
reputation means I can get it for a bargain price.... Come on up once I get the
title secured. I'll be months, probably all winter, cleaning and repairing, before I
can open, but there will be cookouts every weekend.

                                     Loris Key

P.S. Fist, low/moderate? What were they thinking? A woman doesn't keep order in a
restaurant with her FISTS. She uses a cast-iron frying pan, and if it happens to be
full of hot grease and eggs, so much the worse for the trouble-makers.

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail and well met warriors of CALEAM! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes,
Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team MEDAL OF HONOR VI was
unseated this week as STEEL CRUSADE moved up from 3rd ranking to take the top spot
with a 4-1-0 record for the round. UP-CHUCKY caught the eye of many in the
gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested SOLDIER 4 and was awarded 18 points
in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, UP-CHUCKY put down SOLDIER
4, causing him to lose 16 points of recognition in the process. This time victory
fell to the grasp of the usurper. All hail SVEN BLUETOOTH, Duelmaster of CALEAM!
Would you believe that over half of the old women in CALEAM seem to feel that they
could fight better than you gladiators?
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city CALEAM. My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in CALEAM these
days is GOLDEN CANYON. At least, most blades in town are looking to avoid them.
Apparently the stalwarts of STEEL CRUSADE are catching the bulk of jests down at the
challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Loose talk at the arena has
reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after
SOLDIER 4. Watch your back! As a gladiator gets older, the icy grip of fear lays
hold of his heart. True, ARTHUR BEYER? Who could miss your "brave" challenge of
PIKE? The weight of the challenge fell hard upon PIKE and predictably he was subdued
by ARTHUR BEYER. This is how to arouse the anger of an entire guild! A match that
raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that CAYLON MCCANN posted a
challenge against the more highly recognized MOLDRAUN. The results, you ask? Well,
the firebrand CAYLON MCCANN was beat by MOLDRAUN. Remember warriors, this is the
discipline of steel.
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. Dark alleys may hide both secrets and
assassins. In the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a
stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a maul is a
different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Pike -- As interesting as your recipe for shellfish sounds, Loris's "shellfish en
brochette" took the prize. The vodka was a good idea though. -- Sven (hinting for
another sip)

To Golden Canyon -- Thanks for the welcome back. You know, ever since our little
run-in with the high priest of Usmail, our manager and owner, Cassius Calvata, has
been obsessed by this "team building" business. So when his secretary, Deloris,
found an add in the home town gazette, he dragged us all back to Seam to roam around
those fuming hills in some kind of survival experience, he called it. Supposed to
make us work together better, but we spent most of the time trying to pull Up-Chucky
out of mud slides and crevasses. Sven didn't mind, as he is from there and knew his
way around, but the rest of us will be tasting sulfur for weeks. Eugh!!! But we
were surprised to hear that nobody would speak to you in our absence. But it
COULDN'T have been the cooking. Every time we have tried it it has been first rate.
-- Winstead Swizzle (a.k.a. Cap'n Crunch) and the Steel Crusade

Loris -- Weapon hand, shield hand...weapon hand, shield hand. Some day I'll get it
right. But congrats on the win and the advance to AD. Maybe I'll see you there
some day. -- the always hopeful Sven

Komodo Dragon -- Who would name their kid after a commode? -- Calonymus, as confused
as ever

Personally I did not find the Noble Assassin all that palatable. Strong, definitely,
but not to my taste. Don't know what Clemmie saw in the stuff. -- Cap'n Crunch

Moldraun -- It is my considered opinion that those are not speckles on the Speckled
Gecko. They are bruises, and bruised gecko does not keep well. -- Caylon

Arthur Beyer -- Bah, you have no imagination. You probably put catsup on your
scrambled eggs. -- Pike

Soldier 4 -- Hard luck, kid, but life's like that. Maybe if you had a real name,
you'd do better, eh? -- Moldraun

Polite Beggar? Humbug. He's just an ordinary "non-profit" (ha!) fundraiser, and he
deserves whatever I can manage to do to him. -- Corot Toro

Hey, if Corot can beat on the Beggar, so can I! I'm sure not going to FEED him, not
when he wants it for free. I've known guys like that before, and they're bottomless
pits. -- Short Order Joe

Calonymus -- Maybe the Doc names his Labs (the black ones are best, *I* think) after
the varmints they bring home? An intriguing and unusual selection, I must say.
They're certainly a challenge to cook with, anyway. -- Clemmie
P.S. I notice that the Soldiers don't seem to like them at all. Probably a secret
story in that.
