                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

You can imagine how surprised I was to discover that I had finally beaten
Moldraun in a fair and square fight. I hate to admit it, but I think it is the new
training regimen that old Calvata has put us on. I wasn't real sure at first, but
after all the meditation and special vitamins, I gotta say I feel good. Really at my
best for the first time in a long time. And hey, I never would have thought I'd be
Duelmaster even once, let alone twice.
So, since I am feeling expansive here, I want to take a moment to thank
Moldraun, and the rest of the folks at Golden Canyon for all the helpful criticism
they've given me in the past. It has all gone to help make me what I am today. I
know you've got your own place and all, but if you drop in at the Twisted Lemming,
I'll pick up the tab. Try the Kufta...Habib does it up right.

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings, Warriors of CALEAM. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to give
you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. The boys at
ULTRA-VIOLENT are walking tall, as they are ranked 3rd on their first try! Going for
the Duelmaster soon? Practice pays for GUT BUSTER, who pummelled TRUSTWORTHY SCRIBE,
to pocket 16 points. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, DINK GRUNTLING was
winsome, after beating KETTELMAN and seeing him lose 5 points. CAYLON MCCANN
successfully staved off a grab for the roses by M. CHARDINEE of CALEAM. Does CALEAM
have no one talented enough to dethrone him? Word has it one team in CALEAM is using
psychics to predict wins. They lead a charmed life!
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Is it charming personality? Conversational
abilities? Good oral hygiene? Whatever it is, KETTELMAN is the most challenged
warrior.
Like the wind whispering among the pines, do hearest I many disquieting rumors.
Oh hard! that to strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting!
Do not think spyreporting in CALEAM is the highlight of my life. More important
duties call me. Like a mixed metaphor, and an overtaxed simile, I now bid CALEAM
farewell-- Novgorodny Vir

Joe -- I can't say that I blame you. I've never liked pig's knuckles myself. And to
tell the truth, pancakes aren't appealing to me much these days either. -- Dink (the
dyspeptic) Gruntling

Suzette -- I've decided that pancakes just don't agree with me. Not that yours are
bad mind you...but I've decided I like waffles better. Yeah. Or maybe french toast
with blackberry syrup. Yeah. -- Cnut

Clemmie (away off in Andorak) -- The Noble Assassin sends his regards. Charming
fellow, in his own right. You just have to know how to take him. -- Caylon

Me wonder how Mercenary got to be Veteran of anything. He fight like big sissy. --
Up-Chucky

Corot Toro -- You almost had me that time. Too bad for you the Comissioners don't
allow hand grenades. Then, almost might count. -- Cnut (the increasingly witty)
Cnuklz

Mercenaries! Ambitious Guards! Shiftyeyed Volunteers! Jaywalkers and Persistent
Beggars! Who's letting all this riff-raff in the arena? And to think this place
used to be crawling with Cats, Soldiers, strange Critters and Philanthropists! --
Calvata

Moldraun -- You shouldn't listen to Corot Toro. Trying to distract me by waving a
hand full of ginger root around in the air just isn't going to work. I mean, how far
did it get _him_, I ask you? -- Calonymus

Calonymus -- Listen, it's the weather or something. All of us, down to the veriest
sweeper of the floors, have had some kind of cold. We can't cook this way. We can't
even taste anything this way! Well, except the pie someone offered us last night by
way of an audition. NOT someone we will be taking into our company, let me tell you!
There is NOTHING truly wrong with using a recipe. I don't see why some people can't
accept this. Sure, you're making a stew, you can experiment. You're making a
rhubarb pie, a little attention to things such as "how much sugar per cup of rhubarb"
can't do any harm and may stave off a disaster. Or not. Some people can't even boil
water. I do not, myself, believe that anything about that pie can be salvaged, or
would be worth the time and effort if it was, but the Boss says, "Not in tomorrow's
garbage." Oh, well. -- Moldraun

Dink Gruntling -- Not a BAD sausage, I suppose, but it could use more garlic. As,
you know, a health measure. As in, "Garlic Is Good for You. It fights colds and
other problems." We could use that. -- Suzette Creppay
P.S. But it might sit nicely beside french toast with... powdered sugar, I think.
And a dab of nutmeg in the frenching mixture.

Ah, that Ambitious Guard, definitely an Eat-and-Run type of guy. I would have had no
objection to making him a fried egg sandwich, but I'm afraid he was just too
impatient. He ended up with a lot of raw egg on his face. -- Short Order Joe

Cnut Cnuklz -- Corn nuts? (recoiling in horror) Not in MY nutbread! -- Corot Toro

The Shiftyeyed Volunteer tried again. This time, I took his arm off at the elbow. --
Kettelman

As threatened, here is a current manager list for this arena. Let me know if
I've gotten anyone's name wrong! -- The Saint, keeper of lists
     GOLDEN CANYON Leeta
     STEEL CRUSADE Cassius Calvata
