This was not the most pleasant experience, because Fratsfa was a very old city that had been steeping in magic of many kinds for centuries. The background was a muck of bits and pieces of spells accumulated, pressed together by the addition of more magic on top of it, deformed by that pressure and by age, uniting into compound magical structures that no magician had ever visualized, almost breeding with each other. Fratsfa had the highest incidence of spontaneous magical activity of anyplace other than Chaos-contaminated ground such as the marshy plain near Delarq Tor. And when it was happening without the guidance of even a deranged mind, you didn't need the residual effect of Chaos Magic to twist the results into strange forms. Some parts of the background magic here were alive. Against this background, real, living, practicing magicians moved like thieves in a crowd: sometimes you saw them, sometimes you didn't. Picking out possible allies and enemies wasn't easy. Fandil snorted. If it was easy, they wouldn't need him. He began to sort and filter his impressions, and the first thing he discovered was another magician, also scanning. Younger, though no child. Not a clear signature, male, human, mixed motives. But strong, and even with mixed motives, he might be willing to make himself useful-- A blast of energy like a portculis falling, like a guilotine. Like being hit in the head with an axe, but not, Fandil decided as he picked himself up off the floor, quite as bloody and final. What had happened was clear enough: some magician of considerable power had broken the beginning of contact between Fandil and the young mage before it had a chance to develop. Possibly had killed the young man, which would be unfortunate. The old mage extended his magical sense again, not as easily--even thinking hurt at the moment. The magical background was seething, the Fratsfan magicians had either gone into hiding or were doing the equivalent of standing on their doorsteps shouting at each other. Not helpful. Well, looking back at the brief contact, it was not Fandil's impression that the young man was HERE. Within fifty miles, probably closer, but not right here in the city. North and west. Maybe in... Andor? A hopeful thought, they could use a contact in the capital. He reached out--and came up against a wall of magic. No contact with Andor was possible from here. He would have to go closer physically if he wanted to pursue that connection. Or wait until the arcanum cleared, this kind of barrier took amazing amounts of energy to sustain. But he had a feeling, growing stronger by the moment, that they didn't have the time to wait. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 303): GOLDENEYE of BONDAGE (Spawn, mgr.) Oh boy, I can't believe I'm finally here. King of the Hill, head of the list, cream of the crop...a number one. Sorry, getting a little carried away. I'm so happy to be here, and so is Deep Thought, as this gives him the DM in two of his three arenas, the third being the all basher in DM 20. Anyway, I hope everyone had a good Christmas and have a Happy New Year. -- Heart Breaker SPY REPORT Ready for some action-packed adventure, some thrills, chills and spills? Well fergit it, cause this is the Spyreport for CALEAM. What was the name of that team who got 4-1-0 this turn for a total 185-96-11 you ask? (Sure) MENAGERIE's their name, and fighting's their game! MVP award for KNEE BREAKER? ULTRA-VIOLENT's proud of him after beating SUZETTE CREPPAY and getting 21 points. Talk about yer big time losers! DEATH RATTLE got smashed by JEREMY, and lost 21 points! Don't you think the Duelmaster is being unfair? I think HEART BREAKER should let HERSHEL WILLIAMS be Duelmaster for a while, without fighting about it. Who was the wiseguy that said CALEAM's Duelmaster was paying for drinks at The Welcome Wench? Don't look at me! So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these really neat Spyreports can it? ULTRA-VIOLENT was the most avoided team. Is a 67-36-1 record really that scary? Hhmph! What kind of warriors are MEDAL OF HONOR F7? ULTRA-VIOLENT, an easy team to beat if I ever saw one, can't get them to accept an invitation! Can GOLDEN CANYON's SUZETTE CREPPAY be more popular than me? She was challenged the most, but is that really the same? Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give it a break? What if they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a job, that's what!!! I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be a famous Spyreporter? I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really should stop. Its been really albendranius! THE DEAD W L K TEAM NAME SLAIN BY TURN Revenge? PERSONAL ADS Knee Breaker -- You're going to have to re-think your interpersonal strategy. I don't actually mind that you like to hit on people, sometimes I do, too, but the bruises! The colors are very unsatisfactory. Unharmonious and rather muddy, when you get down to it. I'm sure if you and I worked on body painting together, we could come up with something much more exciting. -- Corot Toro P.S. Even the "paint it blue with woad" business was better than the muddy purples and greens of simple bruises. You must see this. Death Rattle -- You're getting a good rhythm there, and it's true that I could get into banging out a percussion line on the big kettles (what else IS a kettledrum but kettle with a lid, hmm?), but...I don't know. It would take a lot of work to put together something that wouldn't be booed off the stage-- Wait, if the audience could be induced to throw usable vegetables, it might be worth the effort anyway. My first love will always be soups and stews, you see. Always. Um, probably always, unless I find a woman who is really good with dumplings. -- Kettelman Hershel Williams -- Shellfish. No. I don't care for shellfish. I figure if it's something that you have to be really hungry to want to eat, then it isn't my bowl of pancake batter. -- Suzette Creppay P.S. Yes, okay, I *have* heard of some kind of pancakes with clam sauce type of thing, or maybe it's some other dish, clam sauce with pasta, I don't know. But you see, that's the whole deal: I don't know and I don't want to. Flesh Flayer -- How about "fish filleter"? I could do some good stuff with filleted catfish in a tempura batter. Pop 'em in the deep-fat frier and serve 'em hot with tartar sauce, coleslaw on the side. -- Short Order Joe Homer Wise -- Ah! And does your wisdom, especially as applied to the Home Arts, which I would guess from your name to be your field, does this wise-ness tell you that one of the wise men *actually* had filled his casket or treasure chest with butter cookies? I bet you didn't know that, but it's seasonal, and what else would you take a kid but cookies? Well, there are other things I suppose, but the old "gold, frankincense, and myrrh," for a KID? I don't think so. -- Spitzin P.S. And if I can shift the darned cat out of the good chair, I will demonstrate the superiority of butter cookies by eating a handful of them right there, with a glass of milk. Ha! Knee Breaker -- (snorting soup out his nose) Good one! -- Kettelman Short Order Joe -- Sorry about the "brutally attempting to slay her foe," I wasn't fighting any differently than usual. Aunt Flo must have been visiting. I'll take some idol before our next fight. -- Flesh Flayer Suzette -- Mmmm, pancakes make my mouth happy, but you can hold the nut sauce, that's filthy. -- Death Rattle Any chance of combining these tiny arenas into one? Three teams will get old quickly. I quit running my team in DM 4 because it was just me and Jorja, and my fighters were getting smoked. -- Deep Thought LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS FALLEN was viciously subdued by KETTELMAN in a 2 minute Challenge fight. KNEE BREAKER demolished SUZETTE CREPPAY in a 1 minute gory one-sided Challenge melee. AMARANTH viciously subdued COROT TORO in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge brawl. JEREMY demolished DEATH RATTLE in a dull 6 minute mismatched Challenge competition. HEART BREAKER devastated HERSHEL WILLIAMS in a 1 minute bloody mismatched Title match. FLESH FLAYER was overpowered by SOLDIER 23 in a 1 minute gruesome uneven melee. GUT BUSTER vanquished SHORT ORDER JOE in a 1 minute gruesome one-sided duel. THE UNFORGIVEN vanquished FRATSFAN NOBLE in a 1 minute one-sided fight. HOMER WISE beat SPITZIN in a popular 1 minute melee. LITHIUM overpowered FRIENDLY CONSTABLE in a 1 minute one-sided match.
