The large lady spun around to look at the black robed figure. "This is the best you could do?" She was staring at the rundown building where Blackstorm brought her. "What are we supposed to do with this...rubble pile? Even Liam wouldn't come near here! I do believe that was a ghoul I saw slinking in the alley!" She stormed up the steps and kicked the double doors off the hinges, raising an incredible amount of dust. Blackstorm followed, trying really hard not to crack up laughing. "What do you expect, Chantal? Times are tough, and this is S.O.S.'s secondary residence." The other ladies came up the stairs, mumbling and grumbling and dropped the wood crates on the floor. Blackstorm smiled and simply said, "Tomorrow you won't recognize the place. Trust me." Chantal walked around and finally calmed down. "So this will be the headquarters of the S.O.S. services." She wondered why they had to work a second job as though gladiatorial combat wasn't enough. Now they had to work as mercenaries as well. Did Blackstorm need gold? "No I don't need gold," says Blackstorm. "Since I've freed you from the slave pits of Niania, you've all been into too much trouble!! Bar brawls, destroying property, not to mention smacking too many men around. These things cannot go on!" He was walking around the great hall wildly flailing his arms over his head while saying this. He turned and stated, "With this new place, we can put in a tavern, maybe even a store where we can sell weapons and armor and since it's ours, I hope you gals won't destroy it. If mercantile work doesn't suit you, we also work jobs hiring out as Grade A mercenaries, which, I hope, will keep you busy enough to stay out of trouble." All the sisters appeared to like this, since no one protested or hurled anything at him. As he stood in silence several wagons started to pull up. One wagon, full of construction material had a sign, "Ork Konstruktion" as well as many orcs with saws and chisels. The other wagon had cleaning crews and painters. Blackstorm walked out with the Sisters of Smash and stood in the street. The workers were already renovating. An Orc was busily planting a post by the stairs. Another put up a sign on the post. They all smiled at the sign. "This should be fun," said Chantal, as she slapped Blackstorm on the back, which almost knocked him down. Need a drink? Need new equipment? Need to have something exterminated? Then come and see us at: S.O.S. Services But never touch the ladies, or will you be surprised! + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ On the Borders of Night #2 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Morya: Lady Protector Amelia of Dodge Bullets froze briefly, then moved to put the wall at her back. She hadn't expected anyone else to be out on this night, but it wasn't impossible. And she had definitely heard something other than the storm. A voice, though how she could hear anyone speak when there was thunder without end she could not imagine. "Have you forgotten Wolf's teaching so quickly?" the voice whispered. Damn! It was close. Really close. But she couldn't see anything. "Death is not the end of everything," the voice reminded her. "Death is just another kind of life." She had heard Uncle Wolf say that more times than she could count, but this was not the old shaman. Apparently it was a ghost or...something like that. She took a deep breath of rain-scented air and let it out slowly. "I have not forgotten," she said, "but neither was I expecting such an encounter. May I see...some form? I find it disconcerting to talk to a disembodied voice." "On some other occasion, I would be glad to oblige," the ghost said, "but at the moment I need all my energies to resist dissolution. There are powerful forces at work in this night--as you know--and not all of them are friendly or even indifferent to the spirits." "Necromancers," Amelia muttered. "There's been a lot of that going around. When people are...alarmed for a long time, they'll try anything." She looked around carefully, peering into shadows and trying to see through the curtain of rain. Nothing that she could see was out of place for here-and-now, so she stepped away from the wall. A name came to her, without any foundation in quotable fact, but she suddenly knew. "It's Nightshadow, isn't it? What are you doing here?" "I might ask the same of you, Lady Protector! This is not the Isle." "The Isle doesn't need my protection. Morya might." "True." When Amelia moved down the alley again, she had the itch between the shoulder blades that meant someone else, someone unseen, was with her. The ghost, she supposed. Maybe even more than one ghost, there had been deaths enough in Morya over the years to fill the night with ghosts. "You didn't answer my question." A long silence, no sounds but the rain beating on cobblestones, and bouts of wracking thunder. Amelia emerged from the alley onto the lakefront. She knew the lake was there only by the smell of so much water, and the way the wind, freed from the confining buildings, shrieked over the open space. Waves roared onto the shore as though from a storm-lashed ocean, drenching her to the knees as soon as she cleared the alley. She grabbed at the wall to resist the tug of the water as it slid back. "I have been sent by the Lords of the Spirit Realms," the ghost said finally. "There have been...problems. Disappearances. Intrusions. Disturbances and inexplicable disruptions." Very unclear and unhelpful, Amelia thought but did not say. Besides, she had no skills that would be of use in the Spirit Realms. That was a job for Uncle Wolf. "I have heard that the Spirit Land has been closed to the living, to travelers and the like," she said. As she spoke, she groped her way along the buildings from handhold to handhold. The guildhouse had never seemed so far away. "That is a symptom of the problems," the ghost concurred. "And the least of them. The Lords are at cross-purposes now. The Spirit Land has been sealed against the living, but some want to seal it even against the newly dead!" "I can see that this would be a bad thing," Amelia muttered, resting in a doorway because the wind and current were getting stronger and harder to fight. "But what can *I* do about it? I'm alive. I am locked out of the Spirit Land, even if I wanted to go there!" "Yes." A pause. "I need a posse of the Dead," the ghost said finally. "Of those dead who are prepared to fight. And a few of the living as well--I have been provided with...passes for a few living warriors who will fight for the rights of the dead." "Amelia, this is insane. An army of the dead? Led by a few living warriors, to...do who knows what in the Spirit Land?" Young Joan shook her head. "It isn't that I doubt you! Or Nightshadow," she added, nodding toward the faint mistiness that marked the ghost's presence. "But this isn't anything *I* know about, or you either! We need Uncle Wolf for this. Or, hmm, Ghost Dancer. Someone with shamanic training." "But we don't have them here, and you know what Wolf always said. If you don't have what you need to do a job, then figure out how to do the job with what you have. There must be someone else in Morya with ideas about this." Amelia shrugged. "Probably, but they might not be on our 'side', you know. "What? How can anybody be against the peace of the dead?" Young Joan demanded. "There are necromancers," her teammate pointed out. "And any magician who makes golems. And the Orphinacs, who want to abolish death entirely. And--" "Enough, I get the point. Okay, whatever I can do to help, I will. But you'd better come up with a plan!" personals for dm 28 and 54, and probably 56 Readers -- I am rerunning the spotlight that started this storyline in order to restart the stalled line. Just so you know. -- the Scribe + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Black Sword #9 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + On the plains: Catching the horses had not been a problem. Not for a Rirorni who'd grown up with horses, anyway. Shanks Pony caught them, and everybody mounted and rode off down the little valley. Nobody said anything. Shanks hoped they were thinking hard. He was. His companions had said the war-bird had been sent by a mage of some kind, and they should know. They had experience with such things. All HE knew for sure was that they had a powerful enemy who knew where to look for them. He was uncomfortably aware that while he had wanted an adventure, he had not, perhaps, thought it through all the way. He was not a coward, he knew that and his companions knew it: he had fought in the arena for a year, facing the possibility of death every two weeks. But that had been different. A known risk, coming at him from the front, giving him a fair chance at defense. A demonic bird coming out of a clear sky was...different. It was going to take time for him to get used to such stuff. "Does that attack mean we're doing something right?" he asked. "Because someone tried to stop us?" Redfox asked. When Pony nodded, the older man shook his head. "Not necessarily, especially not this early in the adventure. More like...somebody thinks we might, eventually, do something right and doesn't want to have to keep track of us until then." He shrugged. "Which in a way means that going out to look for the sword is a 'right' move." "Would it be one of Volundagh's shamans that sent the bird?" "Not likely," Barudai said. "But not impossible," Ghost Dancer added. "But if I had to guess, I would suspect Bluesnake first. He could have seen us set out, guessed what we were going for, and decided to take steps." The four of them rode in silence for several minutes, each of them turning over that in their minds. Finally Redfox said, "It doesn't matter who sent the bird. Right now, all we know and all we NEED to know is that we have an enemy who knows approximately where we are." "So he could send another war-bird, or something else, after us?" Pony asked. "Isn't there some way we could hide our presence?" "Such as a 'spell' in the way the city people use that word?" Ghost Dancer said. "No. Even if I knew magic of that kind, which I don't, using magic leaves a trail as clear as hoof prints in mud." "But--" "What about hunting charms?" Barudai asked suddenly. "The kind that hide the hunter from his prey. If we are the hunters and our enemy is our prey...?" "It might work," Redfox answered, "but only if we truly did take our enemy as prey and set out on a hunt." "That is true," Ghost Dancer agreed. "A city-mage can make a spell of concealment that is as mindless and neutral as a shield. But a hunting charm to conceal the hunter from his prey is more specific. Our intentions would make it work, or make it fail if they're not a hunter's intentions." "So we'd have to stop looking for the sword and find our enemy--Bluesnake or whoever--first?" Shanks Pony asked. "Do we even dare do that? Bluesnake is a shaman--" He paused, then turned to Ghost Dancer. "No offense, but you said yourself that you're still in training, not a full shaman. Can we fight a fully trained shaman?" "Yes, if we have to. And I think we do have to," Ghost Dancer said. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Black Sword #10 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + On the plains: A hunting charm was something Shanks Pony was prepared to use without a qualm. He'd used them before, most Rirorni had. They were as natural as using smoke to hide your scent. Any hunter could make one, although some were better than others. Probably all three of his companions could do better ones than he could, because they had more experience, but at least he would be able to understand what they were doing. He was actually looking forward to that. He would learn useful things. A man didn't pursue shamans and magical swords very often, but he could ALWAYS use a good hunting charm. "So we make hunting charms and..." the next part sent a shiver down his spine, "go after Bluesnake?" "It would help if we had some idea where Bluesnake is likely to be," Redfox said. Barudai nodded. "I've never had any luck with a charm if I didn't know something about where to look for the deer to begin with," he agreed. Both of them looked at Ghost Dancer. The young shaman shook his head. "The closest I could get is that he is probably looking for the Black Sword, too." "That isn't much help," Shanks muttered. "What do we...?" "It isn't as bad as it sounds," Redfox added after a moment. "Apparently Bluesnake doesn't know any more about the sword's location than we do: that it was in Taegskel a few years ago. So he has to go there to look for it, same as we were planning on." "He could just send somebody," Barudai suggested. "No." Ghost Dancer was definite about that. "If you want something like the Black Sword for yourself, you don't send someone else to find it." He smiled grimly. "Anyone who would want the Sword for himself is going to have nothing but unreliable henchmen." "Or dupes." Ghost Dancer hesitated, staring at the horizon and frowning, then shook his head. "Sending a dupe after the Sword would be a mistake, too. The poor fool would probably end up as the Sword's dupe, if I understand the nature of the Sword correctly. Shanks Pony straightened in his saddle, pulling his mount to a stop. "Are WE going to be in danger from the Sword when we find it?" "Yes." That was Ghost Dancer and Redfox together. "But--" "Any person who is near a Black Sword is at risk," Ghost Dancer said. "That is the nature of the Sword. After all, it's a gift, if you want to call it that, from Mytori Iron-Hand. What else would you expect?" "But what are we supposed to do when we find it?" the young nomad asked. "Pray to Shierah and watch each other closely," Barudai said. That was not what Shanks wanted to hear. They were the Good Guys, they should have some defense against an Evil Magic Sword. Or in this case, an Evil Holy Sword, he supposed. He reviewed the ballads he'd grown up with, discarding all those with tragic ends. "Uh...maybe we'll be safe from Mytori because our hearts are pure?" Ghost Dancer choked, Barudai snorted derisively, and Redfox shook his head. It was Redfox who put the answer into words: "Nobody's heart is pure. We're all human, and that means mixed motives, hidden sins, shameful desires, you name it. But those of us who are the 'Good Guys' do the best we can instead of the worst we can." That was an indigestible lump that Shanks Pony would have rejected if he could. But it only took a moment's thought to realize that there were things on his conscience which kept it from being 'pure'. Little things, but maybe it didn't make that much difference whether his mistakes had been little or big? That seemed unfair, but as his fellow tribesmen had often pointed out, life was unfair. He looked around the shallow, brush-choked valley and its grassy slopes, hoping for something, anything, that would provide a different answer. And noticed the clumps of willows moving in a way not explained by the light breeze. SPY REPORT Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in SLAUGHTER PRIEST MEM this turn, and let's start with a look at some of the teams. It seems the training can make the difference, as DODGE BULLETS is pushed out of top team by THE PENTARCHY, who came from 2nd with a 2-2-0 this turn. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for VALHALLA, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them by 4 into 10th. SISTERS OF SMASH stable has parlayed this turn's 3-2-2 into a 3 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 7th place. Good work, guys! On their very first turn, OLD WANDERERS had a 4-1-0, and with this kind of luck or skill, should do well. Welcome to SLAUGHTER PRIEST MEM. And let's see, CALBRAITH CHYRY fought HESHER THE TALL and gained 18 points and contributed to OLD WANDERERS' 4-1-0. HESHER THE TALL has lost to CALBRAITH CHYRY, falling 11 points, while helping make LORDS OF DEATH a 1-4-0 turn. We should ask CAM SHAFT about the thrill of victory, and what being the new Duelmaster does for a warrior, he's now the one to ask. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing fighters do dishes at Arthur's Last Stand until they win. Maybe? I tell you, a green quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling. A basher friend of mine assures me this is true. I also notice that the SISTERS OF SMASH stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on SLAUGHTER PRIEST MEM, what are you afraid of? And avoiding SISTERS OF SMASH more than any other team we find THE ANIMALS. SLAUGHTER PRIEST MEM, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? The most challenged warrior this turn was LORDS OF DEATH's warrior HECATE TRIOS. More fighters challenged her than challenged the Duelmaster! Tsk, tsk, tsk. ANNE TENNA, does your manager know you're challenging down 16 points to fight LADY CONSOLACION from FILIPINA LADYZ? Well, it only serves justice to see that ANNE TENNA was overcame by LADY CONSOLACION. Heh, heh. In a brave attempt, BODI from PHANTACITY challenged up 24 points to fight VINCENZO from the LORDS OF DEATH stable. BODI perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he won victory over VINCENZO and ended up with 25 recognition points. FERRET of THE ANIMALS had better have a good reason for challenging down 10 points in a challenge which he won. I thought FERRET showed great skill and promise when he won victory over HARUSPEK. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace. Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. Kudos go out to HECATE TRIOS this turn, for revenging LORDS OF DEATH's bloodfeud against SISTERS OF SMASH's warrior CHANTAL. Well done. A brave warrior does not carry a red shield, he has nothing to cover or hide when the fight is over. Consider well. Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the sweetest. Well, I'm burning daylight here in SLAUGHTER PRIEST MEM and I've a long road ahead of me. Happy Trails. Moryans leave them running around loose here? I can't say I like that idea at all. -- Redwind Lady Dominga -- I have nothing against other women. -- Mankiller Le Plon -- The weather is on my side today. Dark and stormy, water falling out of the sky, stuff like that. -- Stormdancer Cekaj -- The boss had to check and see if your team is run by Noachian, because of the cool names, but *I* know it isn't. I know all KINDS of things. Such as that a dwarf shouldn't be five foot eight inches tall, but anybody at all with a beard, the Commission pegs 'em as a dwarf. Single track minds. -- Haruspek P.S. Hi. Udri -- That was...unpleasant. Don't do it again. -- Corlejo Zoo Keeper -- I think the length of your weapon is also dependent on the size of your warrior. Although not completely. -- Uncle Wolf, answering idly Ms. Scribe -- Of course I'll be sticking around. I'll try to be in on most turns. I sent in their "special" sheets; try and get those if they help. I'm not the best tale spinner by a long shot, but catch the team spotlight for a bit of useful information. -- Blackstorm (S.O.S.) Zoo Keeper -- Greetings to the master of beasts! Nice to hear from you. As far as I know, the longspear is longer than the Halberd, and lots quicker. We can't use the LS but we do like the Halbards. Luck. -- Blackstorm Rattraveller -- May your stay be long and satisfying. -- Blackstorm Liam -- Hey bud! You should hire us as bodyguards vs. those damn vamp hunters. -- S.O.S. Pentarque -- Good advice. I'll do that. -- Orage Noir P.S. Elles sont tous pitoyable sauf une. Pentarque -- Yeah, the Taxman got me real bad this year. I've got to move the team payrolls around a bit myself. - Blackstorm Phantacity -- Welcome to the arena. Prevari and Bodi put up a good struggle. Looking forward to more matches. -- Rattraveller, Lords of Death Liam the Goth -- So, are you going to stay active here, after all? -- the Scribe, trying to figure out who will be here to read whatever finally gets written 24 March 2006 A few notes about e-mailed personals: You may submit personal ads, columns, spotlights, etc. electronically, either via e- mail to ads at reality dot com (which doesn't need any more spam, thank you) or on the web at http://www.reality.com/duel2/modules.php?name=Ads. When you submit something, you should get back a receipt from HAL at RSI. If you do NOT get a receipt, your ads may have gone astray (not all e-mail makes it to its destination any more than all snail mail does). If you DO get a receipt, it should, in the body of the message, tell you what arena your stuff was filed in. Check your receipt to make sure your submission made it to the intended destination. Also check to see that everything you sent made it to the same place. Sometimes HAL, who is rather simple-minded in some ways, will send half your stuff to another arena if the name or number of that arena shows up at the beginning of a line. So if the word Ti appears at the beginning of a line halfway through your ads, all the ads after that may end up in Ti, which is closed and doesn't need ads. As a side note, sometimes things move slowly, so don't wait until the last minute to send your ads and all. If they get held up along the way, they may not show up until next turn. Happy writing! -- Ed. 28 March 2006 We of the Desolate Empire Alliance want to welcome two managers to our fold. Kon of the Empire Rising, and Osiris!
