The gladiator Haruspek crouched beside the fire and tilted his bowl slowly until
the contents began to settle. "This isn't an exact science, you know," he muttered.
"It's an art, and a damned tricky one. Everything has to be just...right." The foam
dissolved, and he poured off the liquid part of the contents into an ordinary soup
bowl. The scent of near-boiling honey and wine and spices was enough to make Young
Joan's eyes water.
What remained in the silver dish Haruspek was holding was a web of herbs and
spices, bits of bone, and less identifiable material, all swirling in as much liquid
as a man might hold in the palm of his hand in a shallow curve of silver. With a
flick of his wrist that must have taken much practice, he cast the dregs of the...
brew out onto a slab of pale wood. Yew, she thought, because she didn't want to
think about what her teammate was doing, what she had ASKED him to do.
But the only people who could answer her questions were very far away.
Or dead.
Haruspek bent over his tablet of yew and studied it, his finger moving just
above the surface without disturbing the pattern of...stuff that partially obscured
the engraved lines of symbols.
Joan told herself that it was just a glorified sort of reading tea leaves, but--
she shivered--you didn't have to be in a graveyard at midnight under a new moon to
read tea leaves.
Haruspek was mumbling now, bending so low over the tablet that his nose was
almost touching it. She couldn't make out his words, but they sounded agitated.
SPY REPORT
Hail and well met warriors of MORYA! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes,
Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team THE ANIMALS was unseated
this week as FLOWERED HAMMERZ moved up from 6th ranking to take the top spot with a
4-1-0 record for the round. There were bitter words at DODGE BULLETS' guildhouse
after a 1-4-0 showing this week which dropped the stable into 6th. Dark Arena
anyone? Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness how
this week FLOWERED HAMMERZ went 4-1-0 to move up 5 in the rankings. ALFREDO SAWS
caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested BLACK
ROSE HAMMER and was awarded 21 points in recognition. In one of the week's more
notable duels, ALFREDO SAWS put down BLACK ROSE HAMMER, causing her to lose 15 points
of recognition in the process. The city has turned out in honor of LADY ELMA, for
with hers arena victory she may now lay claim to the highest position in the city!
No confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team has gained their position
using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps?
Many and various are the arts of battle. In MORYA "art" is a word that has long
since passed from the language! I saw one fighter that warriors avoided when this
week's challenge seeking began. STEEL AND SILK is feared. This much I can say.
Apparently the stalwarts of SANGUIS MORI are catching the bulk of jests down at the
challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Mighty fighters cannot but
expect competition from those below. STORMDANCER take warning! You have more than a
few enemies in MORYA. A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it
seems that SRAN3E posted a TV challenge against the more highly recognized LE PLON.
The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand SRAN3E defeated LE PLON. Remember
warriors, this is the discipline of steel.
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. MESSORA must hold silent, for this week
she was humbled in the arena by a successful Bloodfeud won by KASAP of PHANTACITY.
Hail KASAP for thy victory! Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears arms.
One thing is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far off
