My true name I will not reveal until I have found and challenged my brother Zanfane, who had me abducted and sold as payment for his gambling debts. It is enough to know that I was raised by my grandmother, and grew up in the foothills of the mountains near Arkers. As a young girl I spent hours playing with the wild mountain cats. Normally ferocious, the panthers and pumas of the mountains were as playful kittens to me. Together we spent many days wandering the mountains, and I came to prefer their company to that of the village folk. My grandmother, Helen, who was of pure Aruaki descent, often smiled when she told me my eyes reminded her of my wild mountain playmates. On the night I was taken, I awoke to hear my degenerate older brother berating my grandmother for her shape-shifting lineage. I left my bed and entered the small front room of our house just in time to see Zanfane, in a wild rage, beat my grandmother to the ground. I rushed to her aid, but a back-hand slap from Zanfane sent me reeling. Falling, my head struck the hearth stones, and I was knocked unconscious. The next memory I have is that of being jerked awake by ice water hurled in my face. I was bound in a long line of others who were being herded to market as slaves. I cried out that some mistake had been made, but the slave master only laughed. My brother appeared, and I begged him to vouch for me. He would not look at me. Horrified, I watched him accept a small pouch of coin from the master and skulk off into the night. Since then I have had many masters, some kind, some not. Often I was beaten for my unruly behavior. One master was an old Alchemist, from whom I learned many secrets of the art, though he often beat me when he caught me spying on him at work. My last master, tiring of my pugnacity, hired me out to be trained for the arena. At least in this way, he could recoup his investment, he said. I had just completed my training when he died. In his will, he ordered all his slaves freed, and I was pushed onto the streets. Living a hand to mouth existence, I made my way to Morya, where I found employment with Casul Calvata in his new stable of fighters. They are a strange lot these Flying Monkeys. Some have stories similar to mine, others keep to themselves. But on the whole, I have never known truer friends since the days of my youth among the wild panthers in Aruak. Given all that I have endured, it may seem odd to say that I take no pleasure in combat. I fight only out of necessity. With my new freedom, I will again delve into the arts of Alchemy whenever I am away from the Arena. I will seek to learn how to harness the inner weaknesses of others, that they may be turned upon themselves. And always, I look to the day when I again face my brother, Zanfane. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Edge of Night #1 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Near Morya: Young Joan had asked, "Why are the dead restless, and what can we do to give them peace?" And her teammate had agreed to scry an answer for her... in a graveyard at midnight. Haruspek straightened away from his tablet of engraved yew, the movement abrupt, even alarmed. It slid a little on the tombstone he was using for a worktable, and the pattern of... stuff, herbs and bits of bone and fur and feathers, that he had cast across it shifted, too. Young Joan shivered again. She was no shaman or seer to know exactly what Haruspek had done, but she could feel the movement of powers in the night, the twisting of immaterial currents into a pattern that partly responded to, partly coerced the pattern on the tablet. "The Water Gate," Haruspek said. His voice was thin and strained. "The Moon's Path. The Dark Riders." Joan waited. Surely there was more? This didn't seem to answer her dilemma. She counted heartbeats. Three, four, five, six-- "Feed the ghosts." His breath whistled. "Light into shadow, bring them light. The Dark Road. Too many shadows. Free the ghosts. Follow the Moon's Daughter to the Water Gate. There will be a guide." Haruspek wobbled and his eyes rolled back in his head; he fell sideways off the flat surface of the gravestone onto the winter- killed grass. Joan flung herself down beside him, feeling for a pulse at his neck. Finding one, and glad of it. Her young teammate wouldn't have done this if she hadn't asked him to. Pressed him to, when he'd been reluctant. He had asked her question of... whatever spirits were here. The dead, she supposed, since it was a graveyard. Just because she didn't understand the answers didn't mean they were wrong. She just needed to think. But she did wish Uncle Wolf was here to explain things. Near Rocanis: "Dark and stormy, of COURSE," Buck Fever said. "What other kind of night would we be out in?" "Be quieter," Lord Protector Bitter Vetch said. "We could get killed out here, you know. Or worse." "What's worse than getting killed?" "Any number of things that could happen to someone straying on Spirit Ridge at night without a shaman," the older man replied promptly. "Trust me when I say you don't want to know the details." "Okay. So why ARE we out there, then?" Buck tripped over... something unseen on the path, nearly fell, and stiffled a curse. The path up Spirit Ridge was tricky in the dark. Hell, it was tricky in the daylight; in the dark, it was worse. He didn't want to think what it would be like coming back down, still in the dark, and probably raining hard. It was already beginning to sprinkle. After several minutes, Vetch answered, "We're supposed to... meet someone on the ridge." "Meet--! Who?" "I wasn't told." "Tricky phrasing," Buck noted. "You found out some other way?" "I don't know, not for sure. If I'm guessing right... maybe ghosts." Near Lapur: Redfox, a Cardow Hunter who had graduated from Dullens, frowned at his manager. "Uncle Wolf, are you SURE this is a good idea?" The old shaman didn't look up from the pattern he was sketching in the snow. "I know it is a bad idea," he said. "Just not as bad as the alternatives." He looked up, his eyes colder than the night sky above them. "Not as bad as doing nothing." He raised the dagger he was using to draw with and pointed at a spot in the pattern. "Stand there," he said, "and don't move, don't talk." Redfox stayed where he was. "What happens when you... make this thing work?" The gladiator knew himself for a simple hunter and warrior; he had no pretensions to shamanic skills. He didn't want any such skills. He didn't want anything to do with situations that required such skills. The shaman sighed. "This is... a doorway of sorts." Redfox tensed. "To the Spirit Land?" He had been there, or somewhere connected with there, before. It had not been a pleasant experience. "No. The Spirit Land is closed to all but the dead at this time. This is... a way around it. A detour, you might say." "To where?" The old shaman shook his head. After a moment, he said, "I don't think I could explain it in a way that would be meaningful to you. Just call it... somewhere else." When Redfox opened his mouth to ask another question, Wolf held up his hand. "No, 'Fox. You're a good man when it comes time to act. That will be your job. I'm sending you to somebody who needs a man of action, and will give you instructions when the time comes. Now, take your position and let's get this done." "But--" "Your main character flaw," Uncle Wolf observed, "is a tendency to ask too many questions. You need to fight that, 'Fox." "If you can't tell me where I'm going, can you at least tell me who I'm supposed to help?" Redfox asked, exasperated. The old shaman grinned, looking suddenly very like his namesake animal. "I'm sending you to Raigavor the Unholy," he said. SPY REPORT So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and I'm going to give you a spy report!. We now have a new top team for all of you guys to dogpile on. THE ANIMALS now holds the crown and they are betting they can keep it. For every winner there is a loser. Speaking of losers, lets take a look at FLOWERED HAMMERZ, who went down to 2nd from 6th. Life is tough. Coming up with a solid 2-3-0 outing, FLYING MONKEYS has advanced 3 places in the rankings. THE ANIMALS is no joke as it posted a 4-1-2 week advancing from 3rd place to 1st place. Hey everybody, watch out for AARD VARK, who flew up 19 points in the rankings after mashing LE PLON like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. PUG was overcame by SCARLET ROSE and drops 15 points. Our Duelmaster has lost, folks, lost to KUNG-FU MASTER, BUT LADY ELMA is still the Duelmaster because she has the most recognition points! 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at that location. Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the MORYA arena. Did you hear that FLOWERED HAMMERZ was most avoided team this week? Well, knowing the personal hygiene of FLOWERED HAMMERZ's warriors, I'm not surprised! Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch SERPENT_CRUE's act in the arena. Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running from FLOWERED HAMMERZ. Well dang howdy, but if challenges were votes, SURGICAL would be president. Although it may be a contest he doesn't want to win. Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! This week 1-13-0 COLD CAST was sent to the Dark Arena. I know a lot of fighters with similar records who might take notice of this. Carrion Bird Cinematic Humor: HARUSPEK II: THE REMATCH. We might as well mark the passing of ATON, who was relatively new to the arena at 2-1-0. Probably killed before his first shave. Big man! UDRI kills HARUSPEK. Who ya gonna fight next, UDRI--Minnie Mouse? I hope DODGE BULLETS has a good enough fighter to beat the snot out of UDRI. Congrats to THE PACIFIST for revenging the death of hers teammate (but more importantly, feeding TROOPER TED a bit of dirt). Remember: alliances are great, but try and take your ally in the arena with you and see what happens. I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of you whom I have not offended yet. C'mon, Leadfoot, let's make some tracks.
