Necroma was sure that they'd been seen, and almost sure it was a man. Well, male. Anyone who would make or wear such a cloak probably wasn't a man the way people meant it when they, well, turned the word into a compliment. She shoved that out of her mind. What was he doing? He'd changed course as soon as he'd seen them, moving into what in the real world she'd call a badlands. Weird. So far as she'd thought about it at all, she'd figured the Spirit Lands would be topographically uncomplicated. But this was truly a whole other world here. "I don't think he's just trying to stop us following by going in there," Cloudrider said. "All the hunting I've done--a lot--when the quarry went into that kind of terrain, it was to set an ambush." "What a cheerful thought," Joan muttered. "But we can't just ignore this." "No, and we can't hang around out here debating, afraid to take a risk, either," Cloudrider said. "Let's go." He started forward. Necroma saw Joan draw breath to respond, then shake her head. "He's right," the older woman said. "I don't like it, but what else can we do?" "We might be able to fight him," Necroma suggested. "After all, HE is alive, regardless of the souls in his cloak, and we outnumber him." "Then why do I have a really bad feeling about this?" Cloudrider asked. Near Zuwayza: The Silent Place was well named. It could also have been called the Hidden Place. A ruin embedded in a grove of ancient trees in the middle of a forest, with only a fence of rusty iron posts and iron chains to separate the inner grove from the outer forest. All of the normal sounds of a forest at night, except for the wind in the branches, had ceased before they reached the fence. Even the fitful hum of insects fell away, although Agro could see pale moths in the spaces beneath the trees. This part of the forest had an unwholesome air, not sick but uncanny and dangerous. The Croc would never have come here on his own; he didn't like being here now. And then Wolf led them around the edge of the Silent Grove to a place where two of the pillars had been bent enough to make a gap a man could squeeze through. Agro looked at it uneasily. If a man could get in, surely things could get out? And how had the old shaman known the gap was here? The gladiators crawled through and moved into the ruins. The underbrush was thinner inside the fence, and to Agro it looked like some crazy gardener had been trimming it. His breath hissed through his teeth. Sometimes he envied mammals their ability to snarl. It would have expressed his feelings better. But he followed the humans anyway. Elsewhere: They had separated once they entered the badlands on the trail of their opponent. Not happily, choosing who would trail far enough behind to ambush the ambusher had involved heated argument. Not one of the three was happy with the final result. Necroma and Cloudrider were in the lead, with Young Joan coming behind by a considerable distance. She was far enough back, they hoped, that the ambusher wouldn't see her when he sprang his trap, but close enough, they hoped, to see when that happened. If that happened, Necroma reminded herself. Cloudrider could be wrong. She didn't think he was, but he could be. "You should have stayed back," the young Rirorni muttered to her. "You're the only one with spells that might help fight this guy." She had been rehearsing spells in her mind, every one she could think of that might possibly help them, and it seemed to her that she didn't know a single useful thing. Better not to say so, maybe. Instead, she said, "Joan's not helpless, and she's got more experience and judgment, I think." Cloudrider shrugged but made no response to that. He seemed more tense, if that was possible, and he was watching one patch of jumbled stuff, what in the real world she would call rocks and brush, out of the corner of his eye. Ahead of them a little way, in a place they would have to pass. Necroma wouldn't have said anything could hide there, and she thought she would have noticed, detected, sensed somehow, the cloak of souls if it was there. But she had no feeling of its near presence. Could their opponent have abandoned it farther ahead, as bait, and doubled back? She sorted through her spells again. As they neared the ambush, several... things burst out of concealment. Not the man they were seeking, these were more like... wolves. Wolves of the spirit, but still-- Necroman seized the first spell that came to mind and cast it. No effect. One of the wolves leaped at her. She threw up her arms to ward it off, if she could. A wave of remorse flooded her: memory of all the things she'd done that she should not have done, all the things she had left undone and should have done, all the errors in judgment. The feeling was so strong that it paralyzed her. A second wolf lept. Guilt tore through her, sharp as a sword, painful and crippling. How could anyone trust her? She was the worst possible ally. She would get her companions killed. It was all her fault.... A flash of silver moonlight in front of her face, cleaner than anything she could imagine. No, a blade, impossibly reflecting the light of a moon that didn't exist in this world. A wolf shape made of shadows dissolved at its touch. A hand shook her shoulder. "Fight back! You have no such heavy sins on your heart, do not let them destroy you." Cloudrider's voice, except not, oh, the ghost that rode with him. But she didn't know how to fight this. Moonlight flashed again on her other side. Who? Oh, Young Joan had come up, Necroma didn't remember the name of the ghost that she carried. Couldn't grip her own sword to help, if it would be any help. Just as well, she'd be bound to muck that up too, as badly as she'd done everything else in her life. Why did they even waste time on her? Near Zuwayza: In the heart of the Silent Place was a small plaza. The paving stones were cracked, the pillars of the colonade around it broken or leaning crookedly, the buildings beyond them confusing shapes in the moonlight and the profusion of vines that covered them. In the center of the plaza was a structure--fountain, pedestal, small dais? Agro couldn't tell. Only even wondered in order to distract his mind from what was on it. A dark shape, vaguely human-like but larger, heavy with power, cloaked with menace. "Why have you come?" The words hit like catapult stones. "There is black sorcery abroad," Wolf said, "and a destruction of souls." "We know this. What have you to do with it?" "We will stop it, if we can. With your help." "You will not stop it without our help." The presence became denser, darker. "There is a price." "I know it." The old shaman pulled something, a folded cloth, from within his clothing and held it out, allowing the folds to fall away. On it lay a c-shaped arm ring that glinted gold; the way the moonlight lay on it hinted at carving. "The Great Ones Beyond sent this by my hand as command and pledge for your aid." A limb of darkness extended from the presence and gripped the ring, withdrawing it into the denser shadow. Agro thought Wolf shook when the arm brushed him. After a moment, the dark one said, "This is genuine and sufficient. For now. We will give you our aid." The shadowy form drew in on itself, becoming as dense as flesh or stone to the eye, and more clearly defined than it had been, more manlike. "Ask," it said, now clearly speaking with a voice instead of, possibly, inserting its communication into their minds. "The dark power must be fought at its heart first, then the limbs will wither," Wolf said. "We do not know where that heart is." "Kurukar. One is there who has trafficked with powers from Outside, tearing the walls that contain existence without concern for the consequences." Annoyance, maybe even anger, entered the Dark Hunter's voice. "We would have fought this long since, save that we are bound here and cannot send out more than shadows of ourselves. Open the way for us, mortal!" "Release you freely into the world?" Wolf actually sounded amused. "The matter is not so simple, as you well know. The world is not what it was in the ancient days when you were unbound. Many know nothing of you, neither how to approach you nor how to defend against you. There must be guarantees given on your side, also." Elsewhere: "I let you down," Necroma said, weeping. "I'll always let you down--" "No." Cloudrider now, but she could hear the echoes of Nightwind in his voice, too. "That is the wolves talking. They defend the Spirit Land against the still- living, and they do it by instilling despair. Mortals have died under their attack, which you did not. And it is an attack, it isn't any kind of guilt that is proper to you. Few of the living know of the wolves, and you had no defenses, but that is not something for which you should blame yourself." "The one we followed wasn't stopped," Necroma said. "He didn't seem to feel any great guilt." "The dead have gone beyond that zone of guilt," Joan said. "It was only the ghost we bear with us that allowed Cloudrider and myself to function. And now we know at least part of the reason for our enemy's cloak of souls," she added. "It would have provided him with some protection against the wolves, also. He's too clever for his own good, that one. We have to go after him, he can't be up to any kind of good. And we *will* need your help, girl. So pull yourself together and let's keep moving." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 596): VENTRIIE of DARK WARDS (Dr. Doom, mgr.) I'll try to be worthy of that honor. My victory against Velvet Finish was of the miraculous kind, but I really wanted to keep the throne in the team. As a testimony, I will leave a brick. Xanax, the quiet one SPY REPORT Greetings, Warriors of MORYA. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to give you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. THE PENTARCHY? Who? THE ANIMALS is the top team these days, buddies! Those betting on RIDERS OF AHRINGOL lost their shirt, as RIDERS OF AHRINGOL lost their fighting abilities: 1-1-0. What's a move up by 7 you ask? (alright, maybe you didn't ask) Cause for celebration, according to FREE MASONS. Say what you will about blind luck and dirty fighting, but PHANTACITY will tell you 64-71-7 is nothing to laugh at... Practice pays for BLACK ROSE HAMMER, who pummelled MANKILLER, to pocket 26 points. A certain someone should cut down on the drinking and practice more, after losing 14 points to PUMA. (Discrete enough, LE PLON?) Now I can't insult CAM SHAFT, as he has gloriously dueled to the top. Oh great new Duelmaster!!! (Stop me if I lay it on too thick) Word has it one team in MORYA is using psychics to predict wins. They lead a charmed life! A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Like a horde of jackals fleeing from the lion, so did the "warriors" in MORYA avoid FLOWERED HAMMERZ. As a woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of ZULU NATION, so did that sorry team shy from FLOWERED HAMMERZ Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes, and CLOUDRIDER is it right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't DODGE BULLETS proud! Call 'im brash! Call 'im brassy! Call 'im brave! Call 'im sassy! MINERVA will face OTHER, up by 26. Aaaah, just call 'im dead meat. Soopreyes, soopreyes! MINERVA emerges from the fray 1 points the richer. Good show, MINERVA! My love of complete Spyreports dictates that I note the mismatched fight, OSTRICH and ZETA. Are RAPTOR unwilling to engage in a fair fight? I thought OSTRICH showed great skill and promise when he defeated ZETA. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... I get a special thrill from seeing innocent girl like ALBATROSS from RAPTOR get pointlessly killed. Good show, ALPHA! (No mercy.) Nothing is certain except death and more death in these bloody arenas. ALBATROSS of RAPTOR met hers fate at the hands of ALPHA. Never one to advocate diplomacy and restraint, I was pleased to see FREE MASONS retaliate against RAPTOR in bloodfeud! Oh hard! that to strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting! Well done to you and your champion manager. -- Finance Manager Vaidisava -- You did what you said, helping transfer the throne to a teammate. Good luck in The Big Time. If anyone can slash with a quarterstaff, you can! -- Finance Manager My, my, my, Anferrous! Did I run into a buzz saw I did not expect? I salute your skill and strategy. -- Assundries Owl -- I really tried. It was a hoot, but I knew I was over matched. Why, I can't even fly. (Finance Manager sure won't allow big priced meals to fly. No way!) So, shucks, and well done. -- Cash Meals Gaea -- I think you were simply outclassed. Perhaps you should try another other? -- Other SRAN3E -- And congrats on your invite. -- Finance Manager and his Expense Account Valorous try, Scarler Rose! See you on the Isle? -- Vaidisava P.S. Thanks to all the managers for their congratulations, I'll visit sometimes and will pay for the beers. I have some hard time finding decent warriors, so I will have to use some DA. Team undergoing reconstruction. -- Le Pentarque Jorja -- It's nice to see you again. We've not got together since the Noblish Island days. I'm pleased to be in the presence of your greatness. -- Silky Nichael -- We're sure our say will only be as interesting as YOU make it! *all grinning back* -- Gods & Goddesses Sorry but Mercury has sent us word that we must go back to Mt. Olympus. It's been fun!! -- Gaea & Nemesis Sran3e -- Know your fallen apple has taken root in the next life. You have defeated me in fair combat, may our swords rest at ease. -- Viper, Paladin of Ahringol Experientia -- Well, well, well... A mighty battle you won, I would say your back-up is your fav, see you around. ;) -- Storm Rider Red Hawk -- You will be missed. -- Ghost Chant, Storm Rider Finance Manager -- I've always liked Kennelworth and his "Health. Humility. Honor." I didn't want to move Gothic Ministry out of Aruak City, but I needed a good team for North Fork. Funny Riders of Ahringol was to go to North Fork, but I sent it here from Sunset. I guess it all worked out for the best. I did put a team back in to Aruak City, so look for me time to time. -- Liam the Goth, mgr Grave Dancers (606) DM 11 Jorja -- Yes, I plan on staying here until the gold runs out. The church of Ahringol is not a rich fate, but they pay me all right. -- Liam the Goth, Il'chant, Black Abbot of Morya P.S. Feel free to use my teams and self in your writtings, will diplo you in a bit. Le Pentarque -- You're on a roll! -- Liam Michael Eldritch -- Thanks for the welcome, I run in 2, 6, 8, 11, 18, 20, 21, 25, 28, 31, 45, 47, 52, 54, 72, 73 or I should say I have teams in there. -- Liam P.S. Forthcoming 26, 60. Opasan -- Weird, I keep expecting you to come out in opalescent armor, and this despite knowing that the opalescent enamel costs and arm and a leg and I can see that you've still got all yours. -- Lorvandis, shaking his head in bemusement P.S. Have you considered training that stat? What's the use of an unburned skill if you can't win or even die? Surgical -- I'm trying to avoid that kind of thing. Besides, I'm hoping that a string of quick, clean wins will bias my adventuring experience toward the positive. Otherwise, I have a really bad feeling about being the only non-graduate on the team there. -- Cloudrider Venus Trap Hammer -- Lady, don't *do* that to me! You wrapped your, um, "arms" around me and I felt like a damned fly being smothered. Even the days of bedrest in the Infirmary didn't make up for it; the food there is awful. -- Stormdancer, badly shaken by his experience Trooper Ted -- You're the kind of man I want to kill. You gave me two blows, *one* skill, a loss, and a monstrous Infirmary bill. You *took* from me a win, *six* skills, and two ratings. There's a name for people like you, and it isn't a pretty one. -- Mankiller Lady Elma -- Obviously, I didn't utter that prayer soon enough, or I addressed it to the wrong deity. I hate it when that happens. -- Ghost of Red Hawk Le Plon -- Waiting for the rain is one thing. A river that's already twelve feet above flood stage with more rain on the way is another thing altogether. Fortunately, we're on high ground. -- Stormdancer Congratulations to Sran3e. -- Jorja and the Desperados 31 May 2008 Any and all who live in the 805 area, I would like for you to call me so we can get together for BBQ's, softball games, and so on. It has been a while since the last get together (several years). It was a blast and I am sure the next one will be also. We just have to do it. All alliances are welcome. Just because my warriors leave your warrior beaten and bloody in defeat does not mean we can't have a beer or five together. I'll even buy the first round. So call 805-588-3419 and ask for Dave a.k.a. Misfit, former member of the Green and Purple Polka Dot Alliance (GAPPDA).
