Young Joan asked. "Can we still follow him?" Cloudrider asked. "I mean, is there still any kind of trail?" Both were silent for several minutes, consulting their ghosts, Necroma guessed. She extended her own senses as she'd been taught, seeking, well, anything at all. She didn't really know what she might find or feel. Nothing. How could there be nothing? That man was out there, and probably other things like the spirit-wolves that no one had told her about. She "looked" harder. There must be something out there. A moving shadow, barely glimpsed in the distance. But it had the texture of clustered souls, and of pain. The cloak of souls, or something like it, Necroma decided. She turned slowly, seeking a direction. Yes. There. She opened her eyes and saw that she was pointing into the darkness, and her two companions were staring at her in expectation. "That way." "Close?" Cloudrider asked. "No... it feels like very far." "Then we must go quickly," Joan said. "Are you going to lose the 'scent' if we run?" "I don't know, I've never done this before, but he's getting away. We don't have time to talk!" She set out at a run, stumbled and almost fell over some obstacle unseen in the murk, and slowed down to a jog. The others were trotting beside her. "Just like they tell us in the arenas," Joan muttered, her words falling into the rhythm of her steps. "Pace yourself. Pacing is everything." "I got really tired of hearing that sometimes," Cloudrider added. Necroma huffed a laugh as she trotted. "Me, too. For all that it's true." She checked her perception of their quarry. "I can still feel him ahead of us," she reported. "But I think... he's moving, too. I wish we could run. Who ever heard of a chase at walking speed?" But they couldn't see well enough to run, so they kept walking, as the man they were following seemed to be doing. Slowly the distance between them closed. "He is having to find his way in the darkness," Cloudrider said. Or maybe it was Nightwind, his ghostly companion. "The souls he has trapped in his cloak will not aid him! But we have only to follow his trail, and if we encounter some obstacle, our soul-companions will warn-- Oof!" He tripped, staggered, and just caught himself from falling. "Unless you're being careless and not even trying to see your path," his companion ghost remarked. "Carelessness and over-confidence are their own rewards." Cloudrider didn't answer, which Necroma figured was smart on his part. She hoped he was paying attention to what he could see of the footing. It seemed to be getting worse. Like tangled grasses changing to occassional brambles. She didn't know if that's what it really was, her training hadn't covered Botany of the Spirit Lands, but that's what it felt like. In fact, the brambles were getting a lot worse, so that she had to slow down to a walk again. But the man ahead of them was slowing down, too. "We're catching up," Necroma said. "And I think he's changing direction. "Good," Young Joan started slwoing, "because Selumia thinks we're coming to a bad piece of ground. Or... dangerous in some way, it isn't clear exactly what she means." Something that in the living world might have been cold starlight was tempering the darkness, so that pieces of the landscape which had merely been black masses before now began to look like rocks and maybe trees. Necroma stared into it, willing more detail to emerge as they approached. There seemed to be a warmer light behind the nearer obstacles, and she thought the man with the cloak was moving toward it. The idea of getting warm had a great appeal. She hadn't realized how cold the Spirit Lands were. She began to put on more speed, after all, she could see better here, so why not? Voices called out behind her, but she barely heard them, they were nothing to do with her. They were far behind, anyway. She wove through the dark columns of great trees, felt the grass and brambles part for her. Her passage was so swift and easy, it was almost like flying. She could see the door ahead, a massive double door of some substance she couldn't identify, deeply carven all over but blurred with age or mist, and a warm light coming through it. Yes. This was the place she had been looking for. This was the place where she would find the answers she had sought all her life. She leaped over the doorsill, hands outstretched eagerly. Joan and Cloudrider heard her scream as the lights winked out. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Edge of Night #21 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Malcorn: The Lord Protector Whisperstep burst in the Tavern of the Black Axe and stopped short. His Greenwarden teammates had told him to make his report here, and he had expected... other Greenwardens, and maybe a representative of Lord Malcorn. Well, there was one other Greenwarden present, Patterson Pine. And Lord Malcorn *himself* was sitting there just like an ordinary person, with a mug of ale in one hand. But also a couple of gladiators he didn't recognize, one of them Rirorni, and an older Rirorni wearing shaman's gear, and a... lizardy sort of... person. And... he swallowed twice, someone or something who looked darkly elvish but had such an aura of danger that Whisperstep almost turned around on the spot and left. Patterson Pine had seen his teammate enter and waved him over. "Sit," he said. The Rirorni shaman fixed him with an imperative stare. "You are the one who stayed with the carcass of the bear," he said. "What did you see?" Whisperstep sank into a chair and accepted the tankard handed to him. "A ghost," he said. "It was bound to the bones of the bear. I burned the bones and the ghost went away. Was freed, I hope." The shaman and the elf exchanged grim nods. They'd been expecting this, Whisperstep could tell. And there was something more they weren't telling, probably something worse. Lord Malcorn set his mug down. "Tell me the rest of it," he said. He was normally so easy-going that it always came as a surprise when he spoke with that regal authority that was his by right. Whisperstep could feel himself sitting up straighter. Again the shaman and the--no, he was not an elf, whatever he was--the dark stranger exchanged glances. They didn't speak. One of the others, the older gladiator, sighed. "This whole business--the matter of the bear and other things we've seen since coming north--are just the edge of the problem. The first symptoms, you could say. The problem appears to have its root in Kurukar--" "Sunk deep into the soul of the Black Kaliv of Kurukar," the dark stranger said. "I am no worker of magic," the gladiator went on, "but I have studied many things, and it appears that the Kaliv of Kurukar has opened some kind of gate that would better have been left shut." "He has opened the Door that leads to the land of the soul-eaters," the dark stranger said. "As is their way, they are sure to have taken his soul first, making him their creature to do their will. Until that Door is closed again, no person living or dead may walk in safety." Lord Malcorn nodded. He was often called the Black Lord or Blackie, which Whisperstep had figured was because of his black hair and swarthy skin. Now he saw that there was another reason for the nickname. "The Door must be closed," he agreed, his voice as hard and dark as wrought iron. "There are certain arrangements I must make; they will take much of the night. We will leave in the morning." The shaman looked surprised. "We do not expect you to come with us, Lord Malcorn," he said. "Surely you are needed here in your own lands?" "Surely he is," the dark stranger said, "any lord worthy of the name is needed in the lands he guards. But even more surely do we need him with us, Wolf." "There are certain responsibilities laid on my lineage," Malcorn said. "You may be able to close the Door, but only I can seal it." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 600): MORAVIA MAUVE of BLUE MOON (Jorja, mgr.) Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for your deeds. It seems the training can make the difference, as EXPENSE ACCOUNT is pushed out of top team by D'HARAN EMPIRE, who came from 6th with a 2-3-1 this turn. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for PHANTACITY, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them by 9 into 13th. STEEL AND SILK stable has parlayed this turn's 3-2-0 into a 9 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 5th place. Good work, guys! The THE PENTARCHY guild has had a 3-0-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, PARKING FEES fought THE USEROUS MERCHANT and gained 22 points and contributed to EXPENSE ACCOUNT's 2-0-0. VELVET FINISH has lost to STORMDANCER, falling 15 points, while helping make STEEL AND SILK a 3-2-0 turn. Well done, MORYA, the Duelmaster was this turn's most challenged warrior. Perhaps VORTEX is not as thrilled, being challenged 4 times. This turn VORTEX challenged SCARLET ROSE in what was MORYA's Title bout. We should ask SCARLET ROSE about the thrill of victory, and what being the new Duelmaster does for a warrior, she's now the one to ask. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing fighters do dishes at Arthur's Last Stand until they win. Maybe? He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose for good reasons. My mama told me that one. I also notice that the THE ANIMALS stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on MORYA, what are you afraid of? And guess who avoided THE ANIMALS stable the most? Believe it or not, it was ZULU NATION. Anyone surprised? In a brave attempt, EXPERIENTIA from STEEL AND SILK challenged up 23 points to fight AARD VARK from the THE ANIMALS stable. EXPERIENTIA perhaps got hers just desserts, seeing as she beat AARD VARK and ended up with 93 recognition points. A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to be true. We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered rude. I like this place, MORYA, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls. Who could ask for more? Well, I'm burning daylight here in MORYA and I've a long road ahead of me. Happy Trails. I like winning. -- Assundries Vortex -- Congrats again for being on top of Morya. Well done! -- Finance Manager Liam -- Le Pentarque would be a great addition to you guys. Yes, Spawn is in with "SCOMSSS Shire" as now all seven who have been in The Fellowship are competing together. Oz is looking forward to seeing you. Good luck. -- Finance Manager Today I would like to congratulate all the managers: all the personal ads are making Morya a lively and beautiful place...long live Morya! -- Le Pentarque It is my turn to leave this paradise. Like Xanax, I didn't manage to grab the supreme honor, but I liked all my fights here. I was planned for retirement, but well I appear to be a Fist specialist, and my manager finds it amusing. Good luck to you on the sand! -- Trooper Ted Ack...it's getting chilly there...my four partners left, and I feel kinda lonely surrounded by many valorous warriors. -- Le (puny) Plon Finance Manager -- Thanks for the encouragements: the two rookies are actually interesting and will appear after the next tournament. -- Le Pentarque Thanks for the proposal about TW 6, Liam, but I'm getting short on time and money... perhaps another time? -- Le Pentarque, again Well, Stormrider, Stormdancer...I should learn to handle storms! -- Le Plon Liam -- Appreciate the welcome. Had a little trouble at first, including harassment from some pesky builders but hopefully they've learned nothing's free. Otherwise, city looks great. Looking forward to making friends. -- Lord Rahl Cockroach -- Could have swore I had you. Everything was slipping through my fingers that time. -- Gratch Free Masons -- Lord Rahl's WILL be done. Nothing personal with the rest of you. -- Chandalen Foxtrot -- Do you believe in fate? I was throwing down a gauntlet to you. We were thinking alike. But everything must balance. You won the challenge right. I won the fight. We're even. -- Scarlet Le Plon -- Ouch! Not a good day for me, I guess, and you'd think it would be better. There've been so many storms, I feel totally at home. Huh, guess I might be spending too much time dancing in them? -- Stormdancer Armadillo -- We've been seeing some of your kind around our area lately. Mostly as roadkill, but that does imply there are live ones, too. Be careful crossing the street, okay? -- Mankiller Xanax -- Ah...I guess it's an honor to get your exit fight. But I wish I could've won it. -- Lorvandis Briar Stem Hammer -- Somebody told me that the briars needed to be "pruned back hard." So I did. -- Cloudrider Hephaestus -- I'm not an anvil, bub, so watch it. -- Blood Hawk Finance Manager -- Cut gas prices in half. I don't know if it would help the stock market, but it'd sure help everybody else. -- Jorja Liam -- I hadn't given any thought to returning to North Fork, I mostly go inactive during contests; easier for everyone. But I'll give it serious thought. I'm going on vacation, well, when this arena runs, I'll BE on vacation, for a week, which will give me time for serious thinking. No promises, but it is hard to resist a personal invitation. -- Jorja P.S. Hmm, and it would be sort of convenient, since the Edge of Night storyline will be in that area.... Our congratulations to Trooper Ted. -- Jorja and Dodge Bullets Liam -- Still thinking it over, but I thought I should just point out that I don't issue challenges or avoids and so am not likely to add that much to the team score, if I join you. If it were TOGS and there were points for personals and spotlights, yes, I could be an asset, but all I could promise regarding this contest would be my presence. You might do better with someone who manages more actively. But if you're willing to accept the handicap of a team which has been called, with some truth "standbys you can challenge," then I would be honored to join you. -- Jorja P.S. I just checked and don't seem to have been active there for YEARS. But my team currently in place in North Fork is Middle Way 3. Which was years ago, also, since I'm up to Middle Way 20 in Noblish now. Zoe -- After two full months on vacation, you STILL were challenging me? I'll remember that... -- Experientia Bongo Boy -- Whew! I wasn't sure I was gonna pull that one off. Well fought! -- Anferrous The Pacifist -- Nice moves, uh, Lady Wolf. Now, drop the shield routine, 'cause you don't need it. -- Surgical Opasan -- Now THAT was a fight! We'll have to do it again sometime, what do you say? -- Scarlet Rose Trooper Ted -- Glad to see that earned your graduation. Now get you gone! -- Velvet Finish Finance Manager -- Actually, the market is a 'pet project' of mine. 115% increase in '07. This year's been rough, but I'm still up about 25% this year. Diplo me if you're not just being sarcastically in character. *wry grin* -- Michael Eldritch Liam -- Harlequin contacted me, and I have passed word to Azaziel. His team is now ready, so if he IS an option, let me know post-haste. I am still puzzling out a few bugs with Force of Will, but will be ready when you (or Darque) is. -- M.E. And, congratulations once again to Vortex. Maybe this time I can catch you on the sands and profit from it. Good luck to you, and to the new/old faces as well! -- Michael Eldritch, mgr Steel and Silk Seci -- You fought with heart and soul, you bring great honoor to Kasap. The question is will our two teams continue with this contest of arms? Keep up the good fight honored one. -- Viper, the red hand of darkness Omega -- I take it you do not speak much? Hope there is no bad blood between us, I don't know you but look forward to things to come. -- Liam the Goth Puma -- That was a good match! I must say Liam was most impressed with you and the Zoo Keeper, last I was here you and your teammates were just starting off in Morya. Hope you continue with the winning ways. -- Storm Rider, Paladin of Ahringol Vortex -- Congrats on the top seat of Morya, may you make it to portals and beyond. -- Liam P.S. Who is your manager? That goes for all the "?" on the manager list, hard to talk to people when you don't have a name to call someone. -- Liam Le Pentarque -- I see that you are going to have a new team here in a few, that has to be hard on someone, no? -- Liam Michael Eldritch -- Harlequin should have sent you a diplo on my behalf, I have your info will get a diplo out to you soon. I'll be here every other turn for a while. -- Liam Rain God -- Good to hear from you buddy, keep that head up and see you back in DM 60 or are you running in DM 25 again? -- Liam P.S. The following warriors have traveled to AD after fighting this turn: TROOPER TED (28-4443) THE PENTARCHY (397) Name-Change-O-Rama The summer tourney brought a lot of people to the Isle who didn't appear there normally. This included Commission employees. Half a dozen arenamasters regarded each other warily in the mirror behind the bar at the Pig in a Haystack. The Pig was obscure and mediocre, drawing few gladiators, which is what they had all been looking for. They saw gladiators every day. Most arenamaster were convinced that this was some kind of punishment. You could always pick out the arenamasters in a crowd. There were superficial differences: One of these had clearly Adantri features, one wore an eye-patch, two were female. But there were, in significant ways, alike. The same size, the same hair-trigger alertness, the same deadliness. The one-eyed man broke the ice, raising his beer mug in salute. "I'm Zrof One- Eye from Zukal. Sugar of Arvat--" One of the women bowed slightly. "I know Sugar. The rest of you...?" The Adantri matched his salute. "Dernal of Dayla Kiv." "Daiyla Kiv? Ah...." "No, without the 'I' in it. These damned bureaucrats can't spell, and they thought adding an unnecessary vowel was exotic." Disgust dripped from his voice. "Tell me about it!" another man growled in agreement. "Khagal of Niatoli, and what they do to the spelling of THAT simple word--!" "I thought Daiyla, I mean Dayla Kiv had a different name right now," Arenamistress Sugar said. "The arena, at least, because of a contest?" "Chavez Ravine." Dernal's tone was the one that substituted in polite company for spitting on the floor. Zrof blinked, taken aback by the bitterness. He wouldn't have minded a contest in Zukal, and damn what they called the place. "It's only temporary, though." "Temporary, shmiperary," another man muttered. He seemed well into his drinking, although, like all arenamasters, he carried his liquor well. "They do it all the time in Aradi. No reshpect. Go around changing thish, changing that. I wish I could change shome thingsh." He signalled the bartender for a refill. The second woman put her hand over his mug. "You've had enough, Harkon. Try the coffee, instead." "You should be mad, too, Ripplesh," Harkon said. "They're going to do shtuff like that in Jahnsh, aren't they?" Ripples Dorrigan shrugged. All the men paused, some with glasses half raised, to watch. "It's the way things are," she said. "Not much we can do about it." "You know," Khagal of Niatoli said, "maybe we could make a few changes. Fix the spelling of Arena 33, for one, change a few standby titles--" "The Commission hates changes." Dernal of Dayla Kiv topped up his glass and drained it gloomily. "Yes, but if we disguise it," Sugar of Arvat said, excited, "make it... maybe a general Name-Change-O-Rama! Then we could slip OUR changes through and no one would notice or mind." *-------*-------*-------*-------*-------*-------* By popular demand, we are holding a Name-Change-o-Rama during the month of September, 2008. If you wish to change the name of your warriors or teams, please contact RSI Customer Service. The charge for a name change is $1.
