First, he was wondering what he was doing here, this was a matter for the humans, who had souls to worry about. He had never heard that Crocs had souls. Okay, someone had said earlier that they must, he couldn't remember if that had been the shaman Wolf or old Math. But the possible souls of Crocs were not his business, they were the business of his manager, T-Hawk. Who was not here. Did that mean that he himself, Agro, being here, had to look out for the interests of all Crocs? That was not the way of his kind. Humans were herd animals. Well, pack animals, anyway. Crocs were solitary. He looked around at the other members of the group. Wondering what they expected of him. Glad he didn't have an indecently expressive face such as the warm- bloods did; at least they wouldn't be able to read his uncertainty as easily as he read their misgivings. "You've said that the enemies we're fighting have drawn in 'other creatures' to aid in sowing disorder," Redfox said. His comment came as a surprise; he was usually quiet and simply let the others tell him what they wanted him to do. "Would it be useful to trap one of these others and question it?" The dark stranger, the one who had come out of the Silent Place, shook his head. "Useful... perhaps. The lesser creatures are not likely to know much of use to us, but they might know something. But not possible. To bait such a trap would be easy, any warm-blooded human would serve. To close it, impossible, because any other warm- blooded human waiting to do that would be as obvious as the bait. It is your living warmth that they detect." Redfox looked at Agro. The Croc nodded. "My blood is not warm, and I have the skills of a hunter," he said. I could be the jaws of such a trap." The dark stranger stared at Agro for several minutes, then nodded. "I can barely detect your presence myself, from this close range and knowing you're there. This effort might succeed." Redfox nodded, too. "Okay. It was my idea, so I'll stand bait, if you'll be the trap, Agro." "Yes, I will do it." In fact, Agro found himself looking forward to it. Hunting was something he knew and enjoyed, and a whole new prey creature would be intriguing. Also, it was the first thing they'd come up with in this situation that was more suited to him than any of the others. "Tonight?" he asked. "Right now?" He pushed back his chair to rise. "No, there isn't enough of the night left. Tomorrow night," Wolf said. Math raised his eyebrows. "I thought we were leaving here in the morning." "It won't matter where we are, within fifty miles. The lesser creatures are already dispersed," the dark stranger said. "They'll find us." + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Edge of Night #23 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Elsewhere: The gladiators pursued the man with the cloak of souls through a dark place that grew darker as they moved. It was impossible to see any tracks now, or any obstacle until they ran into it. So dark that only Necroma's training, and the ghosts that Young Joan and Cloudrider bore made it possible to follow their quarry at all. There was no time in the Spirit Lands, but still the duration of the chase stretched out farther and farther. Necroma remembered that one of her teachers had said that it was perilous to remain in the Spirit Lands for long, ah, durations, but she couldn't remember why. Young Joan said something, but she couldn't make out the words and glanced over her shoulder. Of course she couldn't see anything, but it was odd, Joan had sounded quite far behind. When had they become separated? Surely they'd been side by side just a little while ago? Well, they had their ghosts to guide them and would catch up soon enough. Something that in the living world might have been cold starlight was tempering the darkness, so that pieces of the landscape which had merely been black masses before now began to look like rocks and maybe trees. Necroma stared into it, willing more detail to emerge as they approached. There seemed to be a warmer light behind the nearer obstacles, and she thought the man with the cloak was moving toward it. The idea of getting warm had a great appeal. She hadn't realized how cold the Spirit Lands were. She began to put on more speed, after all, she could see better here, so why not? Voices called out behind her, but she barely heard them, they were nothing to do with her. They were far behind, anyway. She wove through the dark columns of great trees, felt the grass and brambles part for her. Her passage was so swift and easy, it was almost like flying. She could see the door ahead, a massive double door of some substance she couldn't identify, deeply carven all over but blurred with age or mist, and a warm light coming through it. Yes. This was the place she had been looking for. This was the place where she would find the answers she had sought all her life. She leaped over the doorsill, hands outstretched eagerly. ***** *** ***** *** ***** Young Joan and Cloudrider heard Necroma scream as the lights ahead winked out. "A trap!" Cloudrider gasped, trying to run faster in the darkness. He tripped immediately. Joan dragged him back to his feet. "A trap or some kind of obstacle," she agreed. "Our ghosts told us that we were coming to a dangerous place." "Right, and now Necroma's got into trouble in it. She's just a kid, almost. We have to help her!" "We won't do that by rushing around blindly," Joan said. "If we get trapped as well, who will rescue all of us?" "But--" "We must use our wits," Joan said. "Nothing less will serve us as well." Her voice might have been cast in iron. At times like this, Cloudrider found it easy to imagine her in another life as a general and a martyr. "You have the rope in your gear, I believe?" "Yes." Fifty feet of silk rope, no more than a quarter of an inch thick, but strong. He hadn't been able to figure out why she wanted it along, but she was in charge and he'd packed it as ordered. He didn't know what she planned to do with it now, either. He pulled the bundle out of his pack and handed it to her. "What is it for?" "Rope has many uses," she said. "This time, we're each going to tie an end to our belts so that we can separate without losing each other in the darkness." "Oh... okay. I guess that makes sense." He took one end and tied it. "Ah... you did notice before the lights went what looked like trees? Hard to get past them if we're on two ends of a rope." "We'll deal with that when it arises. If it arises. I have certain suspicions about those 'trees'. They may not be a problem." "Of course they'll be a problem! How could they not?" "This is the Spirit Lands, remember? The rules are different here. I think there's a reasonable chance that if you disbelieve those trees firmly, they may not be there. I thought they had the earmarks of illusion, myself." "Illusion? But-- Oh, I SEE. Yes, illusion would make more sense than actual trees, now that you mention it. Huh. Glad you thought of that, because it wouldn't have occurred to me." "So, we separate to the ends of the rope and move forward. Now. Slowly! There may be other tricks and traps ahead of us." Cloudrider could feel the rope twitch and uncoil as Young Joan moved to her right. He moved left, taking up more slack. He'd lost all sight and sound of his companion before they had the rope all paid out. It really was darker here than anywhere else he'd been in the Spirit Lands. So far. Unless it was an illusion, too? Hmm, if he denied the darkness, maybe... no. That wouldn't work. The darkness made it possible to deny the trees with conviction, but impossible to deny the lack of life. A trade-off. In his mind, the ghost of Nightwind spoke, telling him that the darkness was real "in the ways that matter to you." Whatever that meant. He sighed and began moving forward, feeling blindly for each step. ***** *** ***** *** ***** Necroma stopped before she could run into a tree or a wall. The sudden darkness where she had seen warm firelight was disorienting. Confusing, too, because you couldn't blow out a fire the way you did a candle. Someone laughed. No, some >thing< laughed, that sound had never come from a human throat. She clenched her teeth on a curse, realizing that she had run headlong into a trap. But her manager in Lin Tirian, Houdini, had told her that a trap was not a disaster but a challenge. Right. She was a gladiator, a lady protector, she could do challenges. And she was a trained (if inexperienced) adept of the necromantic art. She took a careful breath, calming her racing heartbeat, clearing the panic from her mind. She still couldn't see anything with the eyes of her body, but now that she was paying attention, she could perceive the presence of bodiless souls. Spirits of the dead, no doubt, there were very few circumstances that could produce the bodiless soul of the living, after all. She could speak to those souls, it was the core of necromancy. She summoned the formulas from her memory, the words, and even more important the tones and the rhythms, that would persuade the dead to speak to her. Started framing her questions, because a properly designed question was crucial to getting the kind of information she needed. She had heard too many tales of opportunities lost forever due to carelessness at this point. "I greet those who have died and are near me," she said. "I ask that you tell me what you can of the situation in which I find myself--" Soundless voices clammored around her. =we are bound to answer no questions= *bound only to answer no one who querries us from the world of flesh this one is here among us the situation is different surely we can answer her* >surely surely...< =she is trapped as we are and can be of no help= >no help no help they have said it no help< *they dont know everything and this is a chance unlooked for let us take it* "What help I can give, I will. That is why I am here," Necroma said. *one said he would need a place to stand if he would move the world and there is no place to stand no standing at all in limbo* A place to stand? She visualized the sacred grove north of Lin Tirian where she had first spoken to the dead. Red-brown pillars of great pines around the clearing, slim white columns of the birches that formed a circle in that clearing, moss and fallen leaves underfoot. Smelled the pines and the damp earth as a wind sighed through the trees. The spirits around her stirred. =this is power they will notice and come to torment us= *this is power she can help us* >they will come they will come< "How can I help you?" DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. First things first. Vortex, that was a fine fight, and I will be letting you have another crack at me soon...provided I can hold this bloody title! I'm Michael's first DM, and certainly NOT the predicted best of class. Still, I'll do my best to prove my worth...and I've learned a lot since my Aruak City days. *wry grin* That said, bring it on Morya! I've always loved a good fight, so let's see what you've got! Scarlet Rose Former Goblin Slayer SPY REPORT Thankyouthankyou. It's great for me, The Unknown Spymaster to be back in MORYA. Hope you enjoy the show. Oh, who am I kidding? I already got paid! It was a tough week for FLOWERED HAMMERZ, to drop 5 places in the rankings. Coming up with a solid 2-3-0 outing, STEEL AND SILK has advanced 3 places in the rankings. Hey everybody, watch out for CLOUDRIDER, who flew up 25 points in the rankings after mashing PUMA like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. And falling like a basher in the top ten was ZOE (DARKFACE), who dropped 18 points after a disappointing (to say the least) bout with GHOST CHANT. Unlike most arenas, SCARLET ROSE managed to get hers challenge off against the 8-4-0 YAU (DARKFACE). In front of all the crowds, YAU (DARKFACE) took the Duelmaster's crown for his own. I give the bum two weeks. 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at that location. But enough of that bunch, let's get on to the wimps who like to avoid battle! And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid THE ANIMALS, please raise you hand. Wow. Does MORYA really have that many liars? For those of you who like math, try this one: THE ANIMALS + Weapons That go Boom = STEEL AND SILK + Avoid City. And who is this BLOOD HAWK you ask, with 23 points and a 3-1-0 record. Ooh, the tales I could tell! Was it guts or an overtaxed mental capacity that had VELVET FINISH challenge up 27 points in the rankings to take on LE PLON? I heard VELVET FINISH laughed all the way to the inn as hers new point total of 104 was posted in the arena. I guess beating LE PLON really pays! Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). In the 'Oops, What Have I Done?' category, CHANDALEN was mashed by ECHO, who let CHANDALEN know that killing members of FREE MASONS is a no-no. Congrats to ECHO for revenging the death of his teammate (but more importantly, feeding CHANDALEN a bit of dirt). Here's some advice: warriors with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle. I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of you whom I have not offended yet. C'mon, Leadfoot, let's make some tracks. And a piker at that! Salute. -- Finance Manager & his Expense Account Tsk. Tsk, Guys. Expense Account is Top Team On The Move at 39 points only running two warriors? Tsk. Tsk. -- Finance Manager Michael -- It was in jest full of facetiousness. But we'd vote for Jorja's idea of half-priced gas. Why, when I was young, I remember gas wars at 4 gallons for a buck! I do. -- Finance Manager Zod -- Never spend too much for lunch. Capiche? -- Cash Meals Userous Merchant -- Perhaps my win was because you wouldn't let me park on your lot free? That'll teach you. -- Parking Fees Trooper Ted -- Congrats on the invite. -- Finance Manager Sure do like that Necroma and her adventures with Cloudrider and Young Joan. Sure do. -- Finance Manager I am a lucky weirdo...even my name is misspelled. -- Patte de Jaguar Welcome to the Gobs! -- Le Pentarque No, no, Liam, it's not a new team...it's just my actual team getting almost entirely new, with four close graduations! Stormdancer -- You may be right about that dancing in storms stuff--it's not healthy. -- Le Plon Thanks for the cheers. -- Trooper Ted, a straightforward soul Patte De Saguar -- Stole my victory and didn't even teach me while doing it. Common courtesy would dictate at least leaving me a consolation prize. No grudges, though. -- Gratch Free Masons -- I just followed orders with Heca. Anything afterward was your choice. If these fox-furred gloves were your idea of a peace offering, I accept. And I will echo your sentiment. -- Chandalen Pacifist -- Well done! I was more outclassed than even I knew. You're too good of a teacher, though. Knowledge gained was almost worth the loss. Maybe again later? -- Scarlet Yau (Darkface) -- The Commission says you're human, but I don't actually believe it. I think you're some kind of monster. Yes or no? -- Mankiller Surgical -- Whew! Great, thanks. I wish I could've taught you more skills in return for that blessed win. -- Cloudrider Ascalante -- You're a monkey? This is a big surprise. -- Blood Hawk P.S. You don't look like a monkey. P.P.S. And I had a sort of vague idea that you were a town or city in Aquilonia. Guess I was wrong, not for the first time. Le Plon -- (sulk) (pout) -- Lorvandis, having a bad day Velvet Finish -- It tickled my nose and made me sneeze, and the spasm tweaked my blow at just the wrong moment. Glad it didn't kill you! -- Stormdancer Le Plon -- they tell me it's better to be surrounded by valorous warriors than by cowards. I'm not sure, cowards might run away instead of attacking, which would be, well, safer. But then again, they might backstab instead of a frontal attack, and that would be bad. I guess you'll just have to work with what you find in front of you. Hope it isn't me next time. -- Lorvandis, much more cheerful, perhaps because of the medication dispensed in the Infirmary Finance Manager -- Your brothers team for the turf will be a hard one to bet! I have a filling that this will be the best one yet! As for Spawn, I have never matched against him, so he'll be a dark horse to me. -- Liam the Goth Le Pentarque -- I know all about short of time and money. It would have been great to have you at our side, but we understand, may you win most of your fights. I would say all your fights but just not against mine. -- Liam Le Plon -- Stormdancer warm you up with her dance move and I ride you into the eye of the storm, or ground if I can. -- Stormrider Lord Rahl -- The builders can be a little hard to work with in our city, it helps when you can bring your own group of builders with you. The undead never get tired. -- Liam Jorja -- Your presence would hardly be a handicap as you say, 9- 6-0 in the arena and all. We would not have asked if we did not want you for the contest, besides you'll have fun on the sands and with Lee and me running in the Edge of Night storyline, and the side stories Lee, Mike, Harlequin and myself will be writing, it should be most fun. I will be sending you a diplo with more info with this turn, so make your announcement in North Fork's coming turn and Lee will do his ting on the same turn; Middle Way 3, Nick or Jorja. Let's see your team was last running back in '04, wow that's a long time if I'm not seeing things. Ha! ;) -- Liam Michael Eldritch -- Well buddy see you in North Fork, it will be the fight of your life. A very different type of contest, I've seen good managers get smashed, so be on your toes. It's good to have you with us. -- Liam the Unholy Aard Vark -- I was beginning to wonder just how much more you could take! Whew, well fought for your sort. -- Experientia Stormdancer -- I happen to be a dancer myself, but you're obviously out of my league! -- Velvet Finish Cloudrider -- Ow! -- Surgical Bongo Boy -- We really need to quit meeting like this. It's terrible for our fan base. -- Anferrous Le Pentarque -- Thank you for opening the door for Scarlet. And for being a darn tenacious manager. *smile* It would have been nice to fight with you in TW, but maybe some other time, eh? -- Michael Eldritch Lord Rahl -- Ah, it was a good tale, but you must agree it grew a bit monotonous in the end didn't it? -- Michael Eldritch PS -- Welcome to Morya, and that goes for you other as well (i.e. Free Masons, Feoladairs Gob, and Gods & Goddesses) Finance Manager -- Make that 39% for the year...opportunity has knocked. -- M.E. Liam -- Azaziel and I declare on turn 269 for TW, I should have a dip sent with this, but time has not been my friend lately. Good luck, and let's do this thing! -- Michael Eldritch PS -- Thank Owlin for me and Azaziel, he didn't have to do all that, but it is greatly appreciated 8 October 2008 Hail Alastarians! Allow me to introduce myself. I am Vanek, manager of the Warmasters in the No- Tourney arena of Shadowspire. I come to you with a public service announcement. Some of you may already be aware of Shadowspire and some of you may not realize what exactly you're missing. This isn't your average arena. This is Shadowspire, a large and very active arena where role-playing is encouraged; many managers are active both the personal ads and the D2 forums online, and excitement reigns with many grudge matches from turn to turn. If you haven't checked arena 81 out, I urge you to do so. After returning to the game almost 2 years ago, after a 15+ year hiatus, I was looking to try and recapture the magic of the game I remembered from my youth. After finding my first two arenas lacking, I almost quit the game again. That was until I found the newly opening Shadowspire. It was here that I found the magic and excitement that I remembered. I truly love this arena and am sure you will too if given a chance. Rookie or experienced veteran, it matters not. Both have come together here to successfully make an arena with plenty of competition to challenge the vets, yet with the no tourney format, friendly enough for the novices to get their feet wet and learn (or relearn) the game. When I say that even novices can find success here, I speak from personal experience. I still consider myself a "newbie" to the game but have found plenty of success with my first two Duelmaster titles and two ADM graduates to date. I encourage you all to check out the D2 forums at www.reality.com/duel2/ and look over both the Shadowspire newsletter and DM-81 forum section at the bottom of the page. The forum banter and personal ads help to clearly show that the "old school" feel for the game is still alive and well here in Shadowspire. Also, if you're a former Shadowspire manager who is currently away, I encourage you to return and help continue to make this one of the most entertaining arenas in the game today! I hope to see many new faces in the near future and am excited to see the return of some of the old faces whom have been away! Sincerely, Vanek 8 October 2008 After 17 long years they are finally cutting the Cowboy loose. Red & stinging, my hand is now sufficiently slapped. The state of Texas' boot print is stamped across my ***... Uncle Damnit! I am only 34 (think about it...) so plenty of time to reinvent myself...prospects are great. After wading through the culture shock I hope to be amongst you soon, dishing out paper "w"itch slaps and taking my share of them from you. See you @ the Winter face '09? Only time will tell. Good luck. -- CFH/Rat Salad, 5 Below Zero and an assortment of other underachieving thugs. P.S. Contact info coming soon for those who want it; email and all that other fun sh...stuff. *grin* Sorry Ed. 8 July 2008 ***************************************************** **********************ATTENTION********************** ***************************************************** ALLIANCES OF ALASTARI ***************************************************** **********************ATTENTION********************** ***************************************************** *TURF WAR VI RULES* Starting Nov 2008 (10 turns) Anyone may participate; known alliances, new alliances, or temporary alliances created solely to compete in the Turf War! To participate, each alliance must: 1. Announce the alliance and the Captain of the alliance in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter. 2. Announcements made on the D2 Forums will not be accepted. Captains are responsible for: 1. Verifying those who wish to participate under the banner of their alliance; 2. Distribution of prizes should their alliance win the Turf War. 3. Submit one (1) RSI Roll-Up Certificate to participate Participating managers who are not Captains must: 1. Submit one (1) RSI Roll-Up Certificate to participate 2. Before a manager can compete, he/she must declare themselves in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter as stated above AND be verified by the alliance Captain they will represent. c. Only one (1) team per player may compete. No multiple teams or aliases will be allowed. Violations will result in immediate disqualification from the Turf War (so be sure to take any multiple teams OFF of Team Maintenance). d. Scoring will NOT be retroactive for teams that do not properly declare or fail to send a Gift Certificate by Turn 1. In other words, if your Gift Certificate is not received until Turn 3 of the Turf War, and you have fought on Turns 1 and 2, your scoring will not begin until Turn 3. All conditions must be met before scoring will begin--declaration, verification, and Gift Certificate received. e. No declarations or verifications will be accepted after Turn 5 of the Turf War. f. For purposes of scoring, the moderators will score the Turf War and settle any and all disputes as they arise. Their decisions will be final. Scoring will be as follows for Fights: Win Loss Kill Die Challenge +2 -2 +5 -5 Match Up +1 -1 +1 -5 Bloodfeud +2 -5 +5 -10 Champion x2 x2 x2 x2 Dark Arena* +10 -5 xx xx *After 2nd win, warrior scores no points for wins Special Scoring Considerations for the Turf War are as follows: Spy Report mention (team name only) +2 Style Master +2 Duelmaster +2 Champions: 1. A Champion may be declared, but one is not mandatory. 2. Only one Champion allowed per manager at any given time. 3. Champions that graduate or are killed by another warrior in the arena, but not the Dark Arena, may be replaced. 4. Champions must be in the Adepts bracket or lower on the turn they are declared, and may NOT have gone above Adepts level at any time; this includes teams transferred into North Fork for the Turf War. Bloodfeuds: 1. Bloodfeuds will score points on all four (4) turns. 2. There is no limit to which warrior may bloodfeud or how often. Tournament Considerations: 1. Tournament participation is ALLOWED and encouraged. 2. Tournament Victors won during the course of the contest will gain a one (1) time bonus of 25 points. This bonus will apply EACH time a warrior(s) wins such status. 3. Tournament Champions won during the course of the contest will gain a one (1) time bonus of 50 points. This bonus will apply EACH time a warrior(s) win such status. 4. Points for TVs and TCs will be applied the Turn after RSI posts tournament results in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter (i.e., if the results post on North Fork turn 275, points will be credited on North Fork turn 276 to the applicable teams). Special Considerations: 1. Each alliance begins the Turf War with zero (0) points. 2. There will be NO alliance or team changes once the contest has begun. If you begin the Turf War with Alliance A, you must end the Turf War with Alliance A. If you begin the Turf War with Team A, you must end the Turf War with Team A. 3. There will be a maximum of seven (7) teams allowed per alliance for the Turf War. 4. The Dark Arena may be used on the first turn only, of every warrior, without penalty. Prizes: The Turf War is a "winner take all" contest. All prizes and 100% of the Gift Certificates will be awarded to the Captain of the winning alliance. It is the responsibility of the Captain to distribute Gift Certificates. Moderators will submit a list of each manager on the winning alliance to RSI at the completion of the contest for the non-Certificate prizes. The following prizes have been secured from RSI: 1. Renaming of the North Fork (DM 47) arena; 2. Renaming of Dark Arena Monsters (one for each manager in the winning alliance); 3. Known Favorites for one warrior on each team of the winning alliance (warrior must be ranked Initiate or above, must be alive, and must have at least one arena fight to receive this award). 4. +1 Skill bonus potion for each manager on the winning alliance. Bonus potion must be applied to a living warrior from (DM 47) 5. +1 Skill bonus potion (one) for each manager who fights in all 10 rounds AND 45 fights of the Turf War. Bonus potion must be applied to a living warrior from (DM 47) These awards will be listed by the Moderator for claiming from RSI (Lee) within 4 turns of the end of TW VI. Moderators: The Moderators for this event will be Oz and Master Darque. They will arbitrate all dealings during the course of the contest. Their decisions will be final. All questions, comments, and scoring disputes may be directed to Land of Oz or Darque Forces via diplo in DM 47. Managers with internet access may send a private message to [The Consortium] or [Darque] on the Duel2 Forums. Lastly, you may also email questions, comments, and scoring disputes to rebelnerfherder at yahoo dot com. Please note there have been rule changes from the last Turf War. Please read them carefully!
