TEAM SPOTLIGHT
My name is Pappy Pax, and I am the eldest of the Pax Clan. They all look to me
when the big decisions need to be made. Now last month was the debut of the Pax Clan
on the Morya sands, and as the results showed, we have potential, with four out of
five wins, though I will be the first to admit that there is a lot of room for
improvement. The Pax Clan is a family that got its start as farmers long ago. We
have spread out all over Alastari, and have married into many bloodlines. We have
even recently migrated to Lirith Kai. Now, I will pull team members from all over in
the future, but this team is from right here in Morya. They run a tavern called the
Drunken Ox, so if you are looking for a drink, stop by any time. Now, as I am new to
the sands, I would appreciate any advice you other managers might give. I'll see you
at the sands and I wish you all good luck.

Somewhere in the Spirit Lands:
Young Joan stopped and gave two tugs on the rope that connected her with
Cloudrider, signaling him to come to her. Then she waited. Stared at the "land"
around them. Nearly flat, poorly lit by the perpetual twilight of this region of the
Spirit Lands, thinly grown with some kind of knee-high brown ferns. She considered
it a textbook example of "drab and depressing." It was enough to put anyone off
dying, if this was where you had to go afterward.
Cloudrider appeared, seeming to condense out of the murky atmosphere. Plodding,
as though it took all his effort to put one foot in front of the next. He looked
depressed. "We aren't going to find Necroma this way," he said.
"No," Joan agreed. "I can't think of any way we can look for her with any hope
of finding her except by pure chance. We're wasting our time looking."
"I hate to just abandon her!"
"Yes, but we can't afford to throw away our time in a futile search. There are
important things we're supposed to be doing. Uncle Wolf is counting on us."
The young gladiator heaved a deep sigh. "I guess. But I really don't like it."
"Welcome to real life. If it helps, if we see anything that might be a clue to
finding Necroma while we're doing Uncle Wolf's business, we will pursue it."
"But not right away, I bet. Not if it means dropping Uncle Wolf's work
unfinished." Cloudrider glanced at Joan's face, then away. He'd seen the answer
there clearly enough. "I know Uncle Wolf's work is important, but I don't like
leaving Necroma on her own."

Necroma didn't much like being on her own in this limbo, but in a way, it was
exhilarating. Whatever happened now would be her responsibility entirely. If she
did something right, it would be because she, personally, had thought of the right
thing to do and done it. Not because some teacher had told her what to do.
And she had thought of something to do. Whether it was right or not, only time
would tell. It was a spell she had never seen a use for until now, a spell of
summoning, in a way, but of summoning herself to the location of some other being,
instead of drawing that other to her own location.
She focused her thoughts on Cloudrider and began to chant in her mind.
Carefully, because the difference between this and the standard summoning resided in
two simple phrases, and if she got them wrong, Cloudrider would end up here in limbo
with her.

Somewhere in the North Woods:
Math laid down where Wolf told him to, but he didn't expect to sleep, so it was
a surprise when the old shaman shook him awake. He even felt a little rested. It
was dark except for a single candle that someone had set on a shelf; it flickered and
smoked. Malcorn was standing near it, reading from a small book that was almost lost
in his big hands.
"We need to get the horses ready," Wolf said. "Half an hour to moonrise, and
then we will be leaving."
Math looked at the rear of the mausoleum, which was carved to look like a door.
What it looked like was a stone wall.
Wolf saw the way his eyes went and snorted. "It is a door, and it will open for
us in half an hour."
Which didn't reassure him at all.
Somewhere else, no longer in the woods:
"I never heard what the Spirit Land was like," Blackwind said. "Do you suppose
this is it?"
"Does it matter?" the Croc asked. "It's where we are and what we have to work
with." His non-human head swung a little. "The link is clear."
"Yeah." Blackwind sighed. No use expecting the lizard-man to think like he
did. "I just wondered, and information is always good to have. I've never heard
much about the Spirit Land, in Malcorn we don't, well, I was going to say we don't
deal with it, but I suppose we must one way or another. But not, um, raw, the way
the Rirorni do. The way Uncle Wolf would."
"Or Redfox? He is Rirorni, perhaps he knows more about what is happening here."
"Might be, but it doesn't help us any."

There was a voice, not the nighthunter, someone else. For a wasteland, this
place was getting crowded. Him, the nighthunter, through the link he could feel
Blackwind and Agro coming toward them, and now this voice like thunder speaking words
he didn't know. Maybe this was the "demon lord Arhazul" that the nighthunter had
bargained with to be free to hunt. The demon lord that would demand half his blood.
He almost laughed, these supernatural predators were so predictable. But deadly for
all that.
The nighthunter answered in the same unknown language, whining. Groveling. It
was afraid. Probably in trouble because it hadn't killed him yet. And all the demon
lord cared about was his blood, not his fear. Maybe it would kill him itself.

"Redfox, and trouble," Blackwind said, looking at the cluster of beings in the
distance. Redfox, down across a stone. The nighthunter. Something else.
The Croc made a growling sound that might have been agreement. "Redfox may be
dead."
"Then we recover his body and take it back to the Isle for resurrection." His
hand went to his sword. "Even if we have to fight for it."
Agro grinned, revealling a mouth that contained more teeth than seemed
reasonable. "A fight would be good."

Greetings, warriors of MORYA! Once again I've been called out of retirement for
my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Some people say I ramble too much, I
don't say anything relevant. I repeat myself. I ramble. Well PHANTACITY moved up
0, to 2nd. THE CONDEMNED's walking tall now that they went 4-1-0 their first time
out. But we know what awaits them soon... What's with FLEN ASAIL? He actually beat
MORYA's JAR JAR BINKS, and walked away with 21 more points from the fight. Major
screwup at PAX CLAN. BOBBY PAX lost 9 points to CASCELLA. Some new strategies,
perhaps? Maybe BOBBY PAX will provide more easy wins... See how the Duelmaster
challenged DODGE BULLETS' MANKILLER? That sort of initiative is how he got where he
is now. I can barely restrain my enthusiam for DODGE BULLETS' outstanding member,
Duelmaster MANKILLER. Advice to fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting!
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. How
well I know the feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of
practive, PHANTACITY! In my day, no team with a 80-84-8 would scare me off! What's
the problem, STEEL AND SILK? How well I know the feeling of being the most
challenged warrior, REIBISCH! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt
you. Maybe PHANTACITY's OPASAN is one of those guys who likes pain, or something.
That's what he'll get next week, after challenging up 56 to STORMDANCER. As I
expected, STORMDANCER won OPASAN. Not to start anything, but, OPASAN, now that
you've faced him and seen his style, you might try it again!
