Somewhere in the Spirit Lands:

"Okay," Cloudrider said, "so we work on Uncle Wolf's project." He looked around
at the dim landscape of ferny plains. "How do we do that?"
Young Joan closed her eyes; he guessed she was consulting her ghost partner,
Selumia. "There should be a.... Damn, it isn't clear at all. A zone of
transition."
Cloudrider looked around, pointedly. There was no variation in the scenery in
any direction.
"There will be such a zone when we expect it to be there," Nightwind said in the
back of Cloudrider's mind. "The geography here is not fixed as it appears in the
Outer Lands. Expectation and belief are critical."
"Okay," Joan said, and he figured she must have heard the same thing from her
ghost. "We're climbing a long hill here, and when we get to the top, we'll see the
zone of transition beyond it."
Looking at the ferny ground ahead of him, Cloudrider saw that it was, indeed, a
long slope with a crest somewhere ahead. He could almost see a top to it. This was
a relief, to have a definite, clear goal. "So, let's get walking," he said.

The two not-humans, the nighthunter and the other, looked up as Blackwind and
Agro approached. Blackwind had an idea that hot words had been exchanged, something
in their postures hinted at hostile confrontation between them. Maybe that would
work in their--his and Agro's and Redfox's--favor, that their enemies weren't likely
to combine against them. Or maybe the living versus whatever was a stronger factor.
Trying to calculate all the angles made his head ache.
The taller creature, the Other, fixed a burning gaze on the gladiator from
Malcorn. Literally burning, it felt like. Blackwind wondered how long it would take
for his face to blister from the heat. "Why are you here?" the Other asked.
The nighthunter laid a paw on Redfox, extending its claws like a cat. "This is
MINE," it whined, "you bound it, that proves it was meant for sacrifice even without
the Words!"
The Other's face changed color, going from a not-really-human sort of mauve to
near-black, and its eyes dilated and glowed hotter as it turned on the nighthunter,
teeth--fangs--bared. "You dared? You have broken the ancient contract, and you
dared to involve ME in this transgression?"
The claws flexed and dug in, drawing blood. "This is MINE!" it said again.
Whining, protesting, obstinate as the stupid and fearful can be.
The Other roared something in a language the gladiators didn't recognize. The
nighthunter burst into flames and fled, wailing and screeching, with lingering shouts
of, "MINE!"
"That is a fool, as it has always been," the Other said. "But you set a trap
for it, did you not?"
Blackwind remembered advice from long ago: if you don't know what lies will go
over, tell the truth. "Yeah, we did," he said. "What we were told, things were
getting out of hand, rules were being broken. We wanted... names."
     "And that gave you mine?"
"If your name is Arhazul, yeah. The name was mentioned."
"A fool, and always a fool. I will unmake it. But that is for later enjoyment.
You have my name, one of them. You have found me. What do you intend to try here?"
It occurred to Blackwind that the Other had never once looked at Agro, or
addressed the Croc, and maybe it couldn't even see the cold-blooded gladiator? Maybe
it thought the "we" referred only to himself and Redfox. Interesting, but no time to
test it right now. "Don't know," he said, shrugging. It was damned hard to maintain
the casual attitude, but he had an idea it was the right one here. "We were just
told to gather information. Someone's been messing with, I didn't get this exactly,
but with the way people's souls travel after they die? Something like that. We were
sent out to get some names."
"And that gave you mine?" The Other seemed to swell with wrath. "I will unmake
it slowly and use the parts after in ways it will die to regret. But to you I say, I
swear on the Crimson Gates of Hell, I have not been 'messing' with the movement of
souls. There are certain rules to which all agree, that existence may continue. I
do not transgress them."
And the worst of that was, Blackwind believed it. Whatever was going on with
the souls, this Other was not part of the problem.
"Who dared suggest that I might be involved?"
"Eh? Well, that nighthunter you chased off. It was the first one to mention
your name."
"Not enough. Who sent you to ASK that one?"
Oh, shit. Feuds among the immortal demons? JUST what they needed to get sucked
into. Blackwind hesitated. Maybe he could finesse this--
"It was a Dark Stranger from the Silent Place near Zuwayza," Redfox said. His
voice was hoarse but steady.
A sizzling sound. The Other, too angry even to swear promises of retribution,
fury coming off it like waves of heat off a forge. "Silent Place!" it said finally.
"It will be silent no longer. There will be screams! THEY traffic in souls, never
doubt it, and it is THEY who are breaking the Rules! THEY will pay for this infamy."
"Yes, well, we can take that message back to the people in charge--"
"What people are in charge? How can humans interfere in this?"
"Whoever's doing it is interfering with humans," Blackwind pointed out. "Only
reasonable we should try to get it straightened out."
     "Who?"
     "Well... Lord Malcorn, and...."
"Oh. Yes, the Malcorn... He would. Yes. He has the right, and a right is also
a duty. He would involve Himself, He must." The flaming eyes narrowed. "And He
will see to it that the blame falls on the guilty, and not on those such as myself
who have kept the agreements. Yes." A decisive nod. "I will conduct my own
investigation into this transgression, and you will aid me, human."
     "Ah...."
"I will make it a bargain, according to the rules. The life of this one," it
lifted Redfox easily and shook him as a child might shake a doll, "in return for your
aid."
"Ah, don't these rules say you can't kill him without permission?"
A mouth full of fangs, in what might be a smile. "I cannot KILL him, take him
as a sacrifice, without the Words, but any mortal astray in this realm is at risk of
other things. Many other things. Which I could do, if I wish, without any Words
being spoken. Because his presence here at all is a kind of permission."
"That sounds a lot like the argument that nighthunter was making."
"The cases differ. That one was in your world, but you are in MY world. It
makes a difference, you see it?"
"Yeah." Boy, did Blackwind see it. They were all over a barrel here. Not just
Redfox, he himself was here where he was at risk of the 'many other things', and Agro
as well, if the Other ever figured the Croc was present. "Okay, I guess I don't like
the other choice much, so, what do you want us to do?"

"It is these weasels from the Silent Place who have disturbed the balances,"
Arhazul said after a moment's thought. "AND one of theirs who set you astray in
search of me and mine. So. They must be--"
"We were told that there were out-of-control necromancers involved in this,"
Blackwind said. He edged close enough to free Redfox's hands.
"No doubt. Humans will always meddle, it's what you do, is it not? Even now,
you are meddling with ME. But it is those eaters of souls at the Silent Place who
are MY concern, and if you would ever return to your own world, you will aid me as I
demand in dealing with MY enemies."
"I guess we don't have much choice," Blackwind said again. "Except... we won't
do anything that is going to mess up OUR world, you know."
Arhazul waved what must be a hand, though the fingers were too long and thin and
it had claws instead of nails, still, more a hand than a paw. Better not get in the
habit of thinking of this entity as an animal. "That is understood. We each have
our own agenda, that is the human phrase, is it not? And we will each attempt to get
the best balance for our own purposes. A struggle, but with rules. It will be
amusing."
     "Amusing?"
"Certainly. To be what you call a 'demon' and live here doing what is
available, it becomes boring after a few eons. A new activity is always welcome.
But come, we must begin." It paused, clicking its clawed digits against each other.
After a moment, it said, "Yes, first--Chorzelan. It will be a journey, I do not
consider it a long one. You must be alert, there are dangers--for me as well as for
you." The fangs flashed in something that might have been a grin. "And if anything
happens to me, you will never get out of this world, nor will you long escape others
who might not have my scruples. Therefore think with care before you consider
betraying me."
"We've said we'd work with you," Blackwind answered sharply. "That counts as an
oath in my book, and we aren't traitors."

The half hour till moonrise seemed one of the longest Math op Owain had ever
experienced, and at the same time, one of the shortest. No one spoke. Once the
horses were saddled, they simply stood, each by his own mount, waiting for moonrise.
It was overcast, at least, Math could see no stars. How would they even know when
the moon rose? He opened his mouth to ask, looked around at his companions in the
light of the single candle, and changed his mind. Lord Malcorn, Uncle Wolf, the Dark
Stranger--not people he wanted to question. What was he, an ordinary human
gladiator, no longer young, doing in the company of these... powers? He would be
glad to get out of this, go home, forget the whole business. His feet were cold
clear up to his armpits. But he didn't think he could find the way back from here,
and with strange beasts howling in the woods, he wasn't going to wander off on his
own.
     And then the moon rose.
Math couldn't see the moon, but light shot into the mausoleum from somewhere,
and Lord Malcorn was chanting words of power, and the inner door opened with a sound
of stone grinding on stone.
Malcorn stepped through the doorway, leading his horse. The Dark Stranger
hesitated, and Uncle Wolf crowded against him, forcing him to enter next. Then the
shaman. And Math wasn't going to stay here by himself. He grabbed his horse's
bridle as much for the comfort of its large, warm presence as to make sure it came
along, and walked toward the inner door.

                             Notes from the arena champ.

What did you expect me to do, Yau? You're a man, be glad I didn't kill you!
Yeah, I know, it isn't fair, you aren't the one who got me all stirred up, so who
said life was fair? I can't get at the one I want to kill, so I make do with the
ones I can reach.

                                     Mankiller

                                      SPY REPORT

Thankyouthankyou. It's great for me, The Unknown Spymaster to be back in MORYA.
Hope you enjoy the show. Oh, who am I kidding? I already got paid! It was a tough
week for THE PENTARCHY, to drop 5 places in the rankings. Coming up with a solid
5-0-0 outing, SANGUIS MORI has advanced 5 places in the rankings. Advancing in the
rankings was DODGE BULLETS who went from last turn's 357-359-12, to this week's
record of 360-360-12. Call it luck at the right time or bribes in the right hands,
but the new team ODIN'S CHOSEN scored a 4-1-1 record this week. In front of all the
crowds, OPASAN took the Duelmaster's crown for his own. I give the bum two weeks. 4
out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at that
location.
Here is other news that is of note. Here's a song for you: Who's afraid of the
big, bad PHANTACITY? Big bad PHANTACITY. Big bad PHANTACITY. MORYA's afraid of the
big bad PHANTACITY. Tra la la la la! Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch STEEL
AND SILK's act in the arena. Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running from
PHANTACITY. Well dang howdy, but if challenges were votes, MORTUUS would be
president. Although it may be a contest he doesn't want to win. In a touching
display by a 'touched' warrior, CASH MEALS went after EXPERIENTIA, who was higher by
23 points. Well, when the dust settled, CASH MEALS overcame EXPERIENTIA. SURGICAL
of STEEL AND SILK had better have a good reason for challenging down 13 points in a
challenge which he lost. I thought SURGICAL showed great skill and promise when he
was subdued by LORVANDIS. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha
Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). Ask not the elves for counsel, for they
will say both yes and no. Silly buggers, eh?
Well, there's the manager of the MORYA giving me the 'cut' sign (or is that
'They're going to strangle you in the alley?). Well, there goes another Spy Report.
Good luck in next week's fights. Its been real, and its been fun, but it hasn't been
real fun...-- The Unknown Spymaster

Patte -- Wow! What a tussle! Now THAT is what a real classic should look like.
Kudos to you. It was a lucky, lucky win for me. -- Other
P.S. And you learned so much! I wish I could say the same for me.

Zod -- I wasn't really in that match, was I? And to think I thought I was good?
Perhaps it was your vast experience? Anyway, well done. -- Rental Car

Fratsfa Slave -- That was fun! You are my favorite assundry. -- Assundry

Congratulations to Duelmaster Mankiller. With a name like that, one SHOULD be
Duelmaster. Salute. -- Finance Manager

Pappy Pax -- Nice spot. And welcome to Morya. I'll take that drink at The Drunken
Ox, I will. Two pieces of advice:
          1. print legibly
          2. win; you can only die if you lose
Good luck.
     Finance Manager

All -- What is an youngster like me doing all the way up there in Champions? Why, I
could get killed up there! -- Cash Meals (hoping his next meal isn't his last)

Le Pentarque -- A little punishment is good for everyone. (wink) Go visit The
Flower Girls at The Flower Shoppe in Fratsfa and work it out. -- Finance Manager

Michael -- Nice numbers and faves on Scarlet Rose. A fine warrior! -- Finance
Manager

Jorja -- Bowling? They do that in The Southwest these days? -- Finance Manager
(having spent many hours on the lanes himself)

Other is a handy name... you can imagine a lot! Sturdy fellow anyway. -- Patte de
Saguar

Good luck to Scarlet Rose, she has nice favorites! -- Le Pentarque

Nicely done, Mankiller, patience pays! -- Le Pentarque

ZZ -- Oh, selfish me! Could be worse though. I could be a loser too. -- Scarlet

Lorvandis -- Received everything I was after except the win. Isn't taking that
contradictive to your generosity? -- Jennsen

Slomi -- I learned nothing! You're dumb as a rock. Send Seci back. At least he can
teach. -- Chandalen

Morganna Pax -- Here I was trying to call on your sister when you have a crush. --
Beibisch
P.S. Not bad. Need skills now, yes?

Appreciate everyone's attention. There's enough of me to go around. -- Reibisch

Bobby Pax -- That's the way! Don't give in. Glad I chose the right Pax though. --
Cascella

Reibish -- Thanks for the welcome, but not the reception. What's that make now? 2-0
in your favor. Well I hope our next meeting I win as losses are hard to swallow.
Stop by the Drunken Ox for a drink on the house to show there is no ill will. --
Morganna Pax

Steel and Silk -- Thanks for your welcome, as a token of our graditude we invite all
of your gladiators to enjoy a round of drinks at the Drunken Ox. -- Poppy Pax

Cascella -- That was a lucky blow in our last match for this reason I challenge you
to a rematch. -- Bobby Pax

Zoe -- Not my choice, but I'll take it in a pinch. -- Anferrous

Kung-Fu Masters -- I would recommend that you all return to your monasteries before
you get seriously hurt. -- Experientia and Surgical

M. Chardinee -- I guess that fight makes you a one-hit wonder. -- Scarlet Rose, Lord
Protector

Congratulations to Mankiller for claiming the throne. I appologize aforhand if
Experientia comes on strong this cycle. A hearty welcome to the Condemned, and my
long lost friend Azaziel. *wry grin* On a closing note, please wecome Pyrite and
Platinum Peach, my newest recruits. -- Michael Eldritch, mgr Steel and Silk
P.S. I note an error in the Free Blades Regional News. My top team listing shows
Silky as the manager. Silky manages Gods and Goddesses not Steel and Silk. *wry
grin*

Already fixed, and the relevant list corrected.

Opasan -- It was great to go out with a win--not something I could have counted on.
Please accept those skills as a token of my appreciation. Besides, I won't be
needing them in retirement. Well, probable retirement. Ah, maybe retirement? I'm
going to be sucked into Crysalis, aren't I? Oh, well, I guess there are worse fates.
-- Stormdancer

Jennsen -- I wasn't trying to use magic on you, so of course you were easy. Is it
possible that you have an input error? If that weapon is a measure of your ST, your
options are limited, but you DO have options. -- Lorvandis

Seci -- It's a plot, isn't it? You did this on purpose. I'm probably going to end
up wading through quicksand or something in the dratted adventure. -- Cloudrider
P.S. It's the short name, that's your secret weapon, right?

Pizda -- Ah... a very tall pizza maker? I could eat a pizza. At least, if you leave
off the anchovies, the olives, the pineapple, and ALL THE TOMATO JUNK. Bread, meat,
cheese, I can handle that stuff. -- Blood Hawk

Finance Manager -- I can't say that the benefits plan seems "well done." There
aren't any. -- Stormdancer
