"So let me get this straight," he gestured to the seemingly chaotic array of mechanical parts and complex schematics covering nearly every square inch of wall space, "you believe that this 'contraption' will allow you to analyze events from numerous periods in time simultaneously, and therefore test multiple strategies in a 'real-time' environment." Michael nodded while thumbing through a somewhat hastily compiled 'manual'. "That's the idea." He glanced up, "Of course, I'll get a chance to test its veracity in the upcoming Turf War. What with the sheer amount of technical data that can be obtained with so many skilled managers present, I should have more than enough input to determine its accuracy." Azaziel brushed a black-nailed hand across an amber tinted crystal jutting out from the contraption. "Speaking of the War..." the crystal sparked momentarily, "we're joining the 'Dread Naught' alliance, correct?" Michael frowned. "That's correct." Azaziel turned his attention back to the machine. "Well, what do we know about our 'allies'. Can they be trusted to follow through on this, and for that matter, WHO are they?" Michael pinched the bridge of his nose in annoyance. "Azaziel, we've covered this before. Liam the Goth is a trustworthy fellow. He's got the experience to see this thing through to its conclusion, and I've dealt with him both directly and indirectly in many arenas." Returning his attention to the manual, he continued, "As for Buddy Lee, I have no reason to believe he's anything but sincere, and I KNOW he comes with good credentials." Azaziel arched a thin eyebrow. "Perhaps, but what about this 'Owlin the Wise', and I hate to sound ungrateful, but Jorja's going to be a member?" Michael sighed, "Look, Sensei Jan helped teach our Alliance Captain, and his associates," he held up a hand to forestall a retort, "and Owlin covered our entrance fees. As for Jorja, she may refuse to challenge, but I can speak from experience that her warriors are rarely a push-over." Ebonariex looked intrigued. "Sensei Jan, you say?" He scratched his chin, "Isn't she the one who provided us with that information regarding slashers back when Inochi held Arker's throne?" Michael grinned. "One and the same, and besides, Jan wasn't precisely popular at the time we arrived, but she certainly helped US out when others were giving us the cold shoulder." Michael shrugged, "That counts for something in my book." Azaziel smirked. "Not to play devil's advocate or anything, but I guess the reliability of our newfound allies depends on who you ask, eh?" Michael tried to hide his annoyance. "Look, Azaziel, you ARE the devil's advocate, and I couldn't care less what others say, to a point. The facts are Liam, Owlin, and Buddy all come with good recommendations. Personally, I think most of the negativity that got thrown around about Sensei Jan was personal opinion, not objective analysis." Azaziel seemed to be considering the merits of that argument when a brick red imp appeared on his shoulder and proceeded to mutter something in a rapid, guttural dialect. His expression grew deadly serious in an instant. "Michael, I do believe you may be required to prove our early argument much sooner than you would prefer." He muttered a few words to the imp, which nodded and was gone. "You, meaning WE, may have a serious problem." Ebonariex had a very distant look in his emerald eyes. "An ancient enemy, or perhaps an old friend... it makes no sense, either way." Azaziel spared a bemused glance for the seemingly entranced dragon. "Whatever that's supposed to mean." He turned to Michael. "Gather your strength and meet me outside the Chimlevtal headquarters at sunset." As Azaziel stepped through the shadows and outside reality, Michael snapped his fingers to get Ebonariex's attention. "It seems you may have been right, old friend." Ebonariex turned slowly to face him. "I'll do what I must, but I can't promise what you ask. Centuries have dictated my feelings on this matter, and only time will tell if it is something I can overcome." Ebonariex began the gestures necessary to return him to his 'lair'. "I pray to whatever gods are listening that you do, Michael, because yours is not the only fate that is being put in play here." As his form rippled and contracted, his last words echoed faintly through the lab, "Of that much I am certain...." Michael stood in contemplation for some time, his normally animated features drawn and tense. Finally, he nodded and began the incantation necessary to free his sire's blade from its mystically bound 'tomb'. "You may regret that which you ask for, my old friend," ectoplasmic tendrils of vermilion light began to spurt from a point between his cupped hands, "for even you never knew me in the prime of my power." With a tortured shriek of unnatural power, a great blade of bone and jade colored glass appeared in Michael's left hand. As the residual energies tapered off, he carelessly dropped his newest creation's 'manual' to the laboratory floor. "Time to hunt...." Interlude In the greater scheme of things, the drama surrounding Michael and his friends would likely have little impact on the complex tapestry of Ghea. The blood-fueled scenarios of a world dominated by gladiatorial politics and managerial squabbles dwarfed these matters. Azaziel, Ebonariex, and Michael were all quite powerful in their own rights, but this was a world where powerful individuals could be found in nearly every city--sometimes, on every street corner. Alastari had survived far greater threats than the arrival of a single rogue mage--regardless of his power--and it would survive this latest incursion. For those directly involved, however, the stakes were high, and in some cases, perhaps too high. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Edge of Night #40 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + By the waters of the River of Sleep: The guardian of the bridge took the coin and bowed low, then stepped to the side. Off the bridge. Math blinked and pressed the bag of juniper closer to his face. It looked like the guardian was standing in mid-air above the river! Malcorn bowed in return, not so low, maybe, but with obvious respect, and led his horse onto the bridge. Wolf nudged the reluctant Dark Stranger forward, followed it, and beckoned to Math to bring up the rear. Math pressed the bag of juniper to his face and took a deep breath, glad of the clean scent of it that cleared his head, and advanced toward the un-railed span. He could think of many things he'd rather be doing, almost anything, but they all involved getting out of this place, and the only way to do that was to go forward. Across the bridge. He didn't turn to look behind them, because he had a suspicion that there was nothing back there. At the least, nothing that would be helpful or comforting. He wondered again how he had come to this pass: being a gladiator, yes, that was clear enough, he'd needed to eat, and it was at that time the only job going. But to be here, on this adventure, was he insane? Was it something in the water on the Isle? Maybe the crowding there had made him a little crazy? Surely he wasn't fool enough to accept an adventure out of BOREDOM? The stones of the bridge rang like bell-metal under his feet, making him jump. He hadn't heard it when the others stepped onto the span. Steam, or smoke, or some kind of fumes came up from the water, swirling and drifting into shapes that he would rather not see too clearly. He took another breath of juniper-filtered air. It was one thing to study the uncanny, and something entirely different to experience it. From now on, he'd be satisfied with study. He kept his eyes firmly on the walkway just ahead of his boots and tried not to think about what he might see if he looked anywhere else at all. One foot in front of the other, and soon this crossing would be done. A hoarse cry and a scuffling sound jerked his attention up and forward. The Dark Stranger and Lord Malcorn were struggling on the narrow span. What happened to Malcorn's horse that had been between them, had it fallen in--? No, it was in the lead now, almost to the other bank. Impossible to see from this distance who was trying to do what to whom--jumping off the bridge, pushing someone off the bridge, he couldn't tell. Didn't care. If it came to a choice between the Dark Stranger and Lord Malcorn, he'd go with the Malcorn any day. If there was anything he could do to help. He'd have to get passed the shaman Wolf's horse, and Wolf himself, and the Dark Stranger's mount-- But Wolf was already moving forward. He just touched the Stranger's mount, and it screamed and dissolved into a dark cloud that blew away. He had something in his hand that Math couldn't see. Where was the bridge-keeper in all this? Didn't he have some responsibility to see to it that people who had paid the toll got across? Apparently not, and Math wasn't going to look around and demand explanations. The struggle was becoming less ambiguous: the Dark Stranger was wrenching at Lord Malcorn's grip in an apparent effort to throw itself off the bridge into the river. Which was smoking or steaming more actively, almost reaching for the pair on the bridge. And the Stranger was trying to take Malcorn down with it. Malcorn was resisting, trying to keep the Stranger from jumping, himself from falling. What the heck? Wasn't the Dark Stranger supposed to be an ally? The Stranger raked clawed hands across Malcorn's face, twisted again, and pulled free. Jumped--it looked almost like it expected to fly: arms wide holding out the cloak that fluttered along its trailing edge. A swan-dive sort of swoop, dipping toward the seething water and then upward again. Wolf shouting words like trumpet calls. The swirling vapor condensing into animal shapes, ragged but menacing. Hounds, or maybe wolves. Leaping above the river. Converging on the soaring Stranger. A wail of dismay or despair that came from no human throat as the hunting shapes closed in. The sound went on and on, long after the shapes blurred into mist and faded away, taking the Stranger with them. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 622): BLHU MURTHER of BLUE MOON (Jorja, mgr.) The celebrations, the disappointments... Bein' on top is great while it lasts, PHANTACITY. But how many friends do you have now? Hmmmph! I always thought PHANTACITY was an over-rated team and they proved it with a 2-3-0! Up 'n down. Up 'n down. Rankings always change. Up 'n down. I think I'm gonna be... Well, EXPENSE ACCOUNT's 1st moved them up to 5-0-0 place. Some people say I ramble too much, I don't say anything relevant. I repeat myself. I ramble. Well FORCE OF FIVE moved up 3, to 8th. What's with PIZDA? She actually beat THE PENTARCHY's PATTE DE SAGUAR, and walked away with 21 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at PHANTACITY while they watched PIZDA clobber PATTE DE SAGUAR. He lost 17 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. Apparently MORYA isn't filled with as many gutless wonders as I thought. The Dreaded Duelmaster got 6 challenges this turn! Another fighter (SECI 17-12-2) challenged another Duelmaster (CASH MEALS 13-6-0). Life goes on. SECI was reminded on the sands why CASH MEALS is Duelmaster. I suppose you want to hear some rumors and dirty gossip about your fellow fighters? Tough! No matter the time or place, men will always duel. MORYA thinks SONS OF MARS and their 11-9-1 is too much! If at first you don't succeed, give up... In my day, no team with a 9-6-1 would scare me off! What's the problem, FORCE OF FIVE? JENNSEN of D'HARAN EMPIRE knows how to pick 'em. She challenged CRICTOR UNGERER of THE PENTARCHY who is up by 22. Now was this a wise move? JENNSEN perhaps got hers just desserts, seeing as she was bested by CRICTOR UNGERER and ended up with 27 recognition points. A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters don't accept this. The best do. Many a warrior has met his fate in a hungover stupor. You young rapscallions, take note! Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt. Are you as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm writing it before you read it. Oh, well. Salute. Terrific learns all around, eh? -- Other (luckily a winner rather than just an other) Experimentia -- Whew! -- Cash Meals Persistent Beggar -- Beg more! -- Laundry Now he'll hang around the arena office and whine. Caedere -- I gave it my all, but you were just too much for me. Well done. -- Parking Fees Zulu Nation 48 points! FORTY-EIGHT. We are avoiding! -- Finance Manager P.S. Good luck to Yau (Darkface) in the Big Time. L.P. -- Thanks, Big Guy. -- Finance Manager We have been swarmed by the mighty Zulus... retreat! -- The Pentarchy. Very different but still fearsome is that mysterious Other... what a powerful name for an expense account! -- Crictor Ungerer Finance Manager -- By award, I meant the Chartered teams glorious top spot... but well... not mine anymore... -- le Pentarque Thor Thorsson -- You have slain one of my favorite sons. Now Quintus Maximus will send you to your father in Valhalla. -- Mars Jennsen -- You have a remarkable constitution for a woman. But your record clearly shows that you should be at home tending to the hearth and children, not in the arena. -- Quintus Maximus All -- As you would all have noticed by now, my team is dead. Don't count us out yet. As our family is large and already five more members have stepped up to compete. I am even now registering them with the arena guildmasters and they will soon be ready to compete for glory on the sands. For those of you who care, the Drunken Ox will [unclear, sorry] oxen. So come one, come all. -- Pappy Pax Assumdries -- That was not a swine flu that hit you, that was a "hit" from (Zulu Nation). -- Zod Congrats to Cash Meals! Hope you have a good time on the throne. -- Zulu Cash Meals -- Is that all you got? I will see you again. -- Zod Le Pentarque -- I see that your team is startin' to move back to the top again. So like I said, you are the team to beat. -- Zulu Nation Michael E. -- I must send my congrats to Steel and Silk! Your team is playing real good. -- Darkface P.S. I'm looking for some action. D'Haran Empire -- I did not forget about your team. So *watchout* who is behind your team, see you soon. -- Zulu Scarlet, Scarlet, Scarlet, Scarlet... I'm calling you to the sand. My sword has your name on it. -- Yau (Darkface) Mankiller -- Congratulations on moving to (AD). I hope you do good in the next sand. -- Yau (Darkface) P.S. Thanks for giving my wallet back. P.P.S. But what happen to my momeny that was in it? Well, before leaving I want to give my best to all the managers and teams. A special thanks goes out to Steel and Silk, Expense Account, Pentarchy, Phantacity, but most of all to (Dodge Bullets). I give you my salute to your falling warrior (Cloudrider). I will give Mankiller my best. (smile) -- Yau Cash Meals -- You are very bold but not that good, so try me? -- Zoe (Darkface) P.S. Bring cash, not meals. Lourdepatte -- I do things fast and easy, maybe next time I will enjoy it. -- Zab P.S. Want to try again over a drink or two? White Bect -- Now, that was a good battle worth another fight. -- Zod P.S. Next time, you might not be so lucky. Cloudrider -- Can't shadow what's dark to begin with, can I? I guess you answer your own question, stay away from darkness. -- Yau (Darkface) Congratulations to Cash Meals for being the Duelmaster again. I hope you enjoy your stay at the top. -- Darkface Boomerang -- You fight like the Etruscans of Veii. But I conquered them in the end. Our rematch will be epic. -- Marcus Furius Camillus Pyrite -- I think you are not a dwarf but a rabid Gaul. -- Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus So you divided him into three parts, yes? Mordant Deserter -- Sic semper deserters. -- Quintus Fabius Maximus Steel and Silk -- In hindsight, maybe that kill wasn't worth it. Maybe. Well, time to try something new. And yeah, I'm gonna keep stacking Ls. Hopefully they're walking hand in hand with a bunch of learns. -- Nena Vixin Other -- I'm not in on the conspiracy. Consider this my contribution to the corporate restructuring. Congrats to Cash Meals on the throen. -- Jennsen Experientia -- A traumatic travesty! If only I'd shown up. A victory well deserved. -- Scarlet Cruoris -- Ah! A chink in the defenses. You're not all invulnerable to my efforts. -- Cascella P.S. The "Fold" had good bloodlines once they were brought to heel. White Beat -- Good win. Seems I need my ancestor spirits to help me change this losing streak. -- Chandalen Boomerang -- On your return trip, I'll have you on the end of my pike. -- Reibisch Heathen -- Got your diplo, I sent one back to you this turn. -- Good luck! -- Azaziel Cash Meals -- I'm hungry. But all I've got is over-taxed credit. You do accept credit, don't you? -- Mortuus All -- To all of those valorous fighters that defeated us, congratulations! But remember, from the ashes, a phoenix does rise and burns everything in its path! So beware, we come!!! -- Warriors of Sanguis Mori All -- As I walked down the Moryan street, my only company, the sound of my shuffling feet, when a great bright flame reached into the sky. And the great obsidian dagger was seen by every eye. -- The Mad Prophet Nena Vixin -- Chin up, lass. A much kinder sort is coming for ya next. -- Pyrite P.S. Better teacher, too. Scarlet -- Consider that your "experiment" in XP mismatch. Not pretty at these levels. -- Experientia Khalhums Dwarf -- Consider that bloodbath as payback for Cloudrider. We owe him one... or he does us. *wry grin* -- Surgical Eh? Pizda -- I thought I had you clean, but that forehead shot almost turned that around for you. Well fought! -- Anferrrous Please welcome Valerian of Steel and Silk... -- M.E. All -- Well done, Fman. Cash Meals takes the crown and you pull a 3-0 outing. Many new faces coalescing out of the woodwork, hope to see all of you staying for some time. -- Michael Eldritch, mgr. Steel and Silk P.S. I note your diplo, Snafu, but I'm crunched on time, so I may not get much out this round. Arenamaster Nor -- Just so you're not in the dark. I sometimes play a "do-gooder" in the regional periodicals. -- Michael Eldritch Why? Morya Arena -- Greetings and respects. I'm coming to you to introduce five new warriors in your list. They have been collected from far and wide to test themselves against the distinguished gladiators in this location. May all so contests be clean challenges and end in all being strengthtened. -- Colle Ketor, mgr. Rag Tag Misfits Madeline -- If you insist on blocing my maul with your head, you might want to consider investing in better head protection (and maybe a neck brace). -- Juggernaut Rubbish -- I saw a lot of lunge but not much parry in your style. -- Boomerang Lost personals last time. Tragic news for some. All those wise words and warnings forever lost! -- Lord Rahl Some of them may have been in the stuff received late by the typist. Not your fault, but if it has to be typed, get it to the office as early as you can, okay? Jorja -- Condolences for Cloudrider. Jennsen says she never cared much for those high-faluting types, but he seemed likeable enough. -- Lord Rahl What's up with the confusion? First I'm so loved everyone wants to dance with me, then voted least popular again. What's a girl to think? -- Jennsen Jealousy at work, no doubt. Seci -- Congrats! Compared to the first, that was humbling and frustrating! -- Scarlet Deael -- Learn enough, you ruthless vampire? -- Chandalen Pyrite -- A bit foolish? But then, I'd expect foolishness from you! Remember I'm an ex-blacksmith. -- Cascella Vrtoglava -- Good one but mostly luck. -- Reibisch Lorvandis -- Hmmm... I seem to have locked down my strats, but I've still got a few things to learn. -- Surgical Nena Vixin -- Enjoy the learns, and in the future, carry a backup. Perhaps a hatchet, eh? -- Anferrous P.S. The team's done picking on you. Good luck from here! Madeline -- Whew! Desperation saved my butt in that match. Well fought, sis. -- Valerian Cascella -- That was an evil lash you gave me. Sorry I came calling. -- Pyrite, the fooled Cash Meals -- Somehow I knew that was coming, and it still didn't matter. *sigh* Perhaps one of my teammates can counter those nasty strikes. -- Experientia All -- Welcome Rag-Tag Misfits, to the fine city of Morya. Might I assume you're friends of our other recent arrivals? If you have any questions, ask away. Finance Manager, your statistical analysis continues to confound my attempts at the throne. Steel and Silk will continue to seek its winning average. Until then, a salute to all. -- Michael Eldritch P.S. Sanguis Mori, managed by Azaziel, actually likes you quite a bit, La Pentarque. He's just got an unusual way of expressing his affection. *wry grin* P.P.S. I almost forgot to congratulate Yau on his graduation! Well done, Darkface. Surgical -- Dammit, I had my appendix out already! You didn't need to do it again. -- Lorvandis Yau (Darkface) -- Well, heck. I hate to think what this is going to do to the adventure, assuming the pressure of "real life" lets up and more writing happens. -- Ghost of Cloudrider P.S. Either you have a problem with aiming, or you've found a new attack location: Everywhere. Cruoris -- Plenty of sanguis, but no mori, so I guess it counts as good. I liked it, anyway. -- Blood Hawk Valerian -- Ah, I'm a victim of preconceptions! I see your name and automatically think of the herb called that. It puts me off. -- Madeline Yau (Darkface) -- Damn, why couldn't you have graduated before killing 'Rider? Oh, well, we congratulate you anyway. -- the remaining Dodge Bullets team Yau (Darkface) -- I don't know what we might have in the way of graduation gifts. Nobody tells me anything, and left to myself, I think you're getting plenty as it is. That agelessness business, the guaranteed resurrection, what more, really, do you need?
