                                       Part 111

Morngrym was nervous. He wasn't typically the sort given to such an emotion,
being a rather analytical tinker, and not much for baseless emotional responses.
However, the Tourney of the Dead was proving to be an exception to the rule.
Michael had decided to try and bring Nyan'ti back from the dead, and therefore
had entered her into the 'dead tourney'. Because of the upcoming Turf War and some
other matter, which Morngrym hadn't been privy to, had come up, Michael hadn't been
able to attend in person. So Morngrym had taken it upon himself to offer his help.
If Nyan'ti DID come back, she was going to need some guidance in the early hours of
her resurrection--apparently being dead played havoc with your mental state.
Fortunately, there were others here that Morngrym knew. Scarlet Rose was a
firecracker of a lass, and though she'd recently gained, and lost, the Duelmastery of
Morya, she was still her hot-headed self, and proving to be an able distraction to
Morngrym's overactive imagination. That Experientia gal was another matter entirely,
though. She was one of the 'Northwight' group. It would be bad enough if they
really WERE Northwights, since the race was notoriously high-minded, but she was
actually one of those selected from Hel's realm, and they were a chilly lot to say
the least. Still, maybe he'd be able to bring some good news. If ANY of the girls
managed to secure a win, Michael would be pleased, especially if Nyan'ti pulled off
her resurrection. The inside line was that she'd assume the Champion status for
Force of Will if she made it.
As he considered the implications of one of Michael's entries making the cut,
his mind drifted to the latest contraption Michael had asked for his help on. He was
dabbling in some really obscure stuff. The sentium thing was a long shot, but at
least there had been precedent for it. This 'Chronolyzer' thing was completely off
the charts. Time was not a very malleable element--at least not in retrospect. The
future was always flexible, but the present had a tendency of crystallizing the past.
Michael bought into the 'alternate reality' theory pretty heavily, though. He
believed that by utilizing extremely precise calculations, one should be able to look
at the hypothetical parts--the 'what ifs'--and by tapping those alternate realities
at exact points one could reveal what had taken place as a result of an alternate
action. Morngrym could make perfect sense of Magitech's highly symbolic and often
abstract formulae and schematics, but the stuff Michael was spinning off might as
well have COME from another reality. Morngrym had to build a separate device just to
allow Michael to put his schematic into a visual format--it was that convoluted.
Ironically enough, it looked to be working--at least in a controlled
environment. The upcoming Turf War would provide the necessary data to test its true
capabilities. Still, the whole principle of trying to work around a universal law
disturbed Morngrym. Whoever or whatever created the cosmos had good reasons for
those laws, and it seemed almost sacrilegious to invent a way to circumvent them.
What really concerned Morngrym, though, was Michael's true motives. Granted, such a
device would prove unbelievably useful for gladiatorial competition, but it bordered
on outright cheating, and Michael frowned on those sorts of things. So WHY was he
trying to find a way to reveal potential actions or the potential repercussions of
actions that MIGHT have happened?
Morngrym scowled. He liked a mystery, but this was way out of his league, and
it disturbed him to be working on a project whose full ramifications he couldn't
comprehend.
He was just about to grab a messenger to contact Michael about the matter, when
the announcement was made to commence the Tourney. He sighed and put his
magnification glasses on. It was time to play cheerleader. What a day.

The Silent Place near Zuwayza:

Blackwind followed the two demons on a circuit of the enclosure, conscious of
and grateful for Redfox and Agro at his back. Thrashing through underbrush which he
mostly couldn't see now that it was full dark. Getting soaked, because it must have
rained recently and everything was dripping. Slapping at bugs. The demons didn't
seem to be having these problems, not even the one with the underbrush. Life was so
unfair!
"There!" The voice was Triforos's, from well ahead of them. The junior demon
must be doing scout duty. "A flaw in the barrier, as though it has been opened and
then closed... ineptly."
The others moved to where it 'stood' and looked. The barrier itself was marked
by a fence of iron uprights with spear-head shaped finials and chains linking them at
top, middle, and bottom. Some rust, but less than Blackwind would have expected,
given the age of the place and the climate. Arhazul muttered something, and a
ghostly greenish light flowed from its hand to illuminate the scene. A broken chain,
one upright missing and the ones on either side of the gap bent away. A man could
squeeze through that hole, though not easily unless he was small and thin.
Agro stepped into the spill of light and knelt, touching the ground with a
clawed fingertip. In one place, another, a third. "There were two humans here," the
Croc said. "A man, a child." The finger tapped one track. "The child went through
the gap," the finger moved to one of the bent poles, "and scratched himself on the
iron here. If those within are like the others we have met, the blood-scent would
have drawn them. The tracks don't tell me what happened next."
"A pitiful burrow," Arhazul sneered. Then the demon sighed. "But it is what we
were looking for--what I expected to find. There was a scent to the barrier which
suggested a second breach, but I do not believe there is a third."
"So, we've found this, now what?" Blackwind asked. "Do we close it? Can we
close it?"
"Close, yes, but we cannot seal it. For that, the Malcorn is needed."
"Well, can we do something to keep it from being used until Lord Malcorn gets
here to do the sealing?"
The shape that was the demon Arhazul seemed to bristle. "Without the Malcorn--"
"Yes, I understood that. He's the only one who can seal it properly. But he
isn't HERE, and we need to do something NOW." If demons were always this much
trouble to deal with, it was a wonder to Blackwind that anyone bothered to summon
them.
The eyes of Triforos went hot and bright as flames, and it turned toward Arhazul
and said something quickly; the sounds were like fire and screams and flashing
blades, alien and menacing. It gestured at the humans.
When it finished, there was a silence that seemed long. Finally Arhazul said,
"It has been suggested that a temporary seal could be made--with blood. The Malcorn
has Words of Power, but blood will form a seal, also. And this one," it indicated
Redfox, "was prepared to give up its life-blood in order to end the predations of the
nighthunters. If we were to perform the proper sacrifice here... ah, no perhaps here
and at the main entrance both, yes, that would do it, why, then we might be able to
seal the barrier well enough until the Malcorn returns."
"Two sacrifices?" Redfox asked calmly. "Or one extended one?"
"There is no certainty," Arhazul admitted. "But I believe that the death of a
single strong warrior, if he surrenders his life willingly, would be sufficient to
hold the barrier closed until the Malcorn can attend to it."

The Silent Place near Zuwayza:

Blackwind turned on his companion, his only human companion. "Redfox, do you
WANT to die?"
The Rirorni shrugged. "Everyone dies," he said. "Yes, even Lord Protectors, in
the end. But it isn't given to everyone to know that his death will count, so--"
Before the Malcornishman could answer, Agro cut in. "Everyone dies," the Croc
agreed, "but it is not necessary to rush on your death before other solutions have
been examined. Just because these Others claim that blood will seal the barrier
doesn't make it so. They are guessing--they have admitted it--and it is their nature
to make their first guess one of blood."
After a moment, Redfox nodded. "All true, but who among us has the knowledge to
search for other answers?"
"We are warriors," the Croc said. "Three of us, and good ones all to be Lord
Protectors in the first place. Couldn't we just... stand at the gates and fight back
anyone who tries to get out?"
Blackwind laughed. "And why not?" he asked. "Isn't that what the Lady Sheila
established the arena system for to begin with? To train up warriors to stand at the
gates and prevent unauthorized passage? I say we do it that way."

Elsewhere:

Necroma sat up in the tangle of rose briers and looked around her. Definitely
not limbo, so she was ahead on that. A valley of roses. Didn't sound like the
Spirit Land, but she was beginning to realize that there wasn't just one "Spirit
Land" and most of it or them had not been covered by her training. A LOT of stuff
hadn't been covered in her training. If she survived this, she was going to have
some heated words with her instructors.
She stood, looking toward the hilltops that defined her valley of roses. Aha!
There were Cloudrider and Young Joan, coming over one hill. So the business of
summoning herself to their location had worked! She hadn't been sure it would. The
relief was amazing--not to be the only living person in this place--
Necroma spread her arms and ran toward the other two, laughing.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

I love this arena! It is such a smorgasbord of warriors. And I like my
buffets! They don't call me Cash Meals for nothing. Look at these names...Pogadi,
Gimlee Vaine, Ziggy, Dorothy Pax, Sabretooth,Deael, Lizard, Iwron Destude, Luckii
Duval, Porcupine, Juggernaut,Reibisch, Zab, Thor Thorsson, Vrtoglava, Pyrite,
Messora, Patte DeSaguar, Cascella, Pizda, White Bect, Lorvandis, Seci.... Don't they
just make you hungry? Especially the Pizda. I just love Pizda.
My prediction. Someone will defeat me this time. Who will it be? At least,
then, I will not have to write one of these troublesome DM Columns.
     Good luck to all.
             Cash Meals, Duelmaster III

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail and well met warriors of MORYA! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes,
Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Did only my eyes note the 4-1-0 record
which THE CONDEMNED managed to post this round? I don't doubt that such a record
will draw challengers! WHITE BECT caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial
commission as he skillfully bested CONVICTED ASSASSIN and was awarded 18 points in
recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, VALERIAN put down ZAB, causing
him to lose 10 points of recognition in the process. This time out SURGICAL made his
bid for the throne as he challenged CASH MEALS in an all out contest of skill for
possession of the title! Although SURGICAL made a valiant effort, it did not suffice
to topple the reign of victorious CASH MEALS. Informants "close" to the city
champion have told me that he never fights without pantyhose on beneath his armor.
Watch out!
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. MORYA, city of gladiators! Mighty
among the names of thy guilds is PHANTACITY, a guild shunned and avoided by many in
the weekly duels. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard pressed
to find any of EXPENSE ACCOUNT last week. Busy avoiding PHANTACITY? Loose talk at
the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters
are after EXPERIENTIA. Watch your back! A match that raised a few eyebrows at the
games this week, it seems that JENNSEN posted a challenge against the more highly
recognized TEZCATLIPOCA. The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand JENNSEN was beat
by TEZCATLIPOCA. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of steel.
What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality? Perhaps even the strong cannot escape the vagaries of this world.
This week arena veteran PIZDA was slain, despite a 10-4-0 record. Walk proud,
warriors of SONS OF MARS! By striking down THOR THORSSON you have avenged the honor
of your dead. Your virtue is known to all in MORYA. My hearty congratulations
MARCUS CAMILLUS, for thy revenge upon DASK RUIN, slayer of thy fallen comrade. Next
time he will know better, eh? Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins. In
the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always!
The girls are as pretty in MORYA as ever I remembered them....and the fighters
as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far
off city calling to me. I must away! Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into
a rage quickly and often. The wise are angered by the same thing only once. Zontani

La Pentarque -- No doubt, some day soon it will be yours again. -- Finance Manager

Zod -- Yep. That's all I have. Pretty mediocre, eh? But far and away enough for
the likes of you. -- Cash Meals

Zoe -- I would be glad to try you. Perhaps you are the competent one on your team?
But you are not in range. Not so close. What can I do? Perhaps you need to win
some more? Try challenging Zod. He is easy. -- Cash Meals

Welcome Colle Ketor, mgr. Rag Tag Misfits. May your stay be long and prosperous. --
Finance Manager, Expense Accounts

Seci -- Good try. Mighty close. -- Cash Meals, Duelmaster

Cascella -- You brute! How did I survive that? Whew! -- Other

Jebi1Kenobi -- Your parking meter elapsed! -- Parking Fees

Quintus Maximus -- My chariot was better than your chariot. (wink) -- Rental Car

All -- I know no one in and nothing about this world. Sorry, Michael Eldritch, that
assumption was wrong. Any advice given would be appreciated. Rag-tag Misfits will
be back in the arena soon and visiting Angrboda. Not a nice way to welcome a
newcomer! -- Colle Ketor

Congrats to the Finance Manager... not much left for the others! -- le Pentarque.
P.S. Zulu Nation, you can see that, right now, there is at least another team to
beat.

Yep, Zab, let's drink something, I guess I'm not too good at that arena stuff. I
don't like the dry sand. -- Lourdepatte.

Zod -- Come back whenever you want... close fights are always a pleasure. -- White
Belt.

Welcome to the Misfits. -- Le Pentarque.

Michael -- You may be right about Azaziel, but I'm not a girl... it's Le Pentarque,
not La Pentarque (La Pentarchie is the name of the team). ;)

Odin's chosen -- Don't tell me that you chose to hide rather than face a bloodfeud!
-- Mars

Dask Ruin -- Now truly you are condemned! -- Mars

Sons of Mars -- Tough luck with old Appius cladius. Now he is just a notch on my axe
handle. I look forward to the coming bloodfeuds. -- Dask Ruin

Ziggy (Darkface) -- Ahh. Never underestimate the value of a good desperation
strategy. -- Flen Asail

Did somebody say Turf War?!? -- Heathen, awaking for the first time with interest.

Zulu -- Ah, memories. Wouldn't have it any other way. How else will you ever learn
how to grow to Empire status? -- D'haran Empire

Yau -- I see you know the hold-back technique, calling with graduation allready here.
Still, keep the sword. Anything with my name on it must be priceless. -- Scarlet

Other -- Ugh! My second wind insurance expired unexpectedly! -- Cascella

Anferrous -- Sorry. Had to see if it was just luck the first time. -- Scarlet

Crictor -- So much for reliving the good ole days! -- Jennsen

Tez -- Record well earned! -- Chandalen

Marcus Camillus -- Don't count your blessings yet. You'll have another loss coming
soon to match that win. -- Reibisch

Jorja -- Well, I guess it's just you and me again, just like in Jhelum. I'll try to
stick around, but it would be nice to have some more teams here. I'm sending a
couple to fight by torchlight, so there will be some new faces next turn. -- Deep
Thought

I think it possible this personal belongs in Caleam? An easy typo.

All -- The unclear portion of last month's ad stated that the Drunken Ox is still
open (not oxen) for business. -- Pappy Pax

Thanks, always glad to have an error corrected.

Force of Five -- Congratulations on last month's victories. I hope to have gained
the upper hand this month, if not then you have gained my respect. All of your
warriors are welcome to enjoy some relaxation at our pub, the Drunken Ox. We have
good ale, loose wenches, and a carefree environment. -- Pappy Pax

Zod -- Unfortunate mismatch for you, my friend. -- Experientia

Yau -- A nearly fatal mismatch for me! Luck on the Isle. -- Surgical

Scarlet -- I'm not supposed to lose to your sort. After all, I train with a rather
vicious example of the style daily. *sigh* Maybe next time. -- Anferrous

Deael -- Too many vowels! No deal! You go now! -- Pyrite

Pogodi -- I don't even want to know... -- Valerian

All -- And the Turf War has been won by (drum roll, please)... YourBagD! Nice round
ten comeback for Master Darque and company. 75-point win margin. SCOMSS Swamp is up
for a name change. -- Michael Eldritch, NOT a member of the winning team

Zoe (Darkface) -- You're a GUY? That's repulsive. -- Lorvandis
P.S. Because I used to date a girl named Zoe.

White Bect -- Huh, I had some comment and it got away from me.... Ah! That fight
was unfair to you--life is like that a lot--but I sure enjoyed it--life is not like
THAT often enough! -- Blood Hawk

Laundry -- Yeah, well, I'm going to take it down to the river and bash it on the
rocks, so your buttons are TOAST. -- Madeline
P.S. Why you would make buttons out of toast I can't imagine, but there it is.

Sabretooth -- Wow, amazing overbite you have. You should get it fixed. --
Stonewalker

Lucius Sulla -- How come you're so short? Damn, how come I'm a woman? When did THAT
happen? WHY? I want a recount! -- Cloudrider (II)

We salute Morya's tourney participants, few though they were. -- Jorja and Dodge
Bullets
