The Spirit Lands:
"You said the landscape here is suggestible, right? That it's shaped by our
expectations."
Joan and Necroma both looked at Cloudrider, surprised by the comment. Up to
now, he--now she--had been just a follower. An extra pair of hands, not someone who
had ideas.
"Yes," Necroma said. "That's what I was taught. Some parts of the Spirit Land
are, well, fixed, but others aren't."
Cloudrider frowned at the horizon, a ridge not far away. "I expect we'll find
the center of the problem right over that ridge."
Young Joan threw up her hands as though to stop him. "Rider! You shouldn't--"
A shiver passed over the land around them, not something they could see, just a
feeling in the back of the mind, maybe a ripple at the corner of an glance.
"That's done it," Necroma said. "We are really, truly in trouble here, because
the worst heart of the problem is right over that ridge. And if we turn around and
go the other way, it will be right over the other ridge. THINK before you say things
here!"
"I did think," Cloudrider said. "I thought I'd like to get this taken care of.
No more distractions."
Joan blew out her breath in a sigh. "I feel that, too, but I wouldn't have
chosen to start with the worst part first. Still, it's done. Let's go."
The Silent Place near Zuwayza:
The necromancer's blade howled as it cut through the space Blackwind had
occupied a moment before. Not just steel, he noted with one corner of his mind.
Probably something really nasty, it'd be like this creep. Well, he hadn't planned to
get cut up by it anyway, it wasn't like *he* had a death-wish, or a death-mark, or
whatever was affecting Redfox. He rolled back to his feet. But how did he fight
someone who had no more substance than mist? Stories of heroes who had dealt with
such problems blurred through his memory: special blades, or knowing the one
vulnerable spot on the villain, or help from an improbable source--they weren't going
to work for him. He didn't have the blade, or the knowledge, or the--
The demon Arhazul moved forward, slipped between Blackwind and the necromancer.
There was a sound like a bell ringing in the distance, or maybe he only imagined
that-- Without moving, the demon slid sideways and vanished. "Strike now,"
Arhazul's voice whispered.
If he'd had time to think, to remember that the demon wasn't exactly on their
side, that it had said before it was unsure about this situation... but he didn't
think. His trained reflexes took over, and he threw himself forward behind his blade
in a perfect lunge. It was an article of faith among all gladiators, backed by
considerable collective experience, that the blackest mage in the world wasn't going
to be dangerous once he had a foot or two of steel through his heart. Assuming you
could find and reach his heart, of course.
There was a spray of sparks when his blade hit the air immediately around the
necromancer, and a sort of tingling fizz up his arm, and then he felt a jolt as a
barrier of some kind parted, and the sword went through, and the necromancer wailed
and... melted. His body sagged like hot wax, slumped downward, and smoked, stinking.
Blackwind threw himself to the side again to avoid touching the remains, rolled back
to his feet, and turned toward the fence around the Silent Place and the gap the
necromancer had made.
The boy who had gone in was not in sight, but something was there, just inside.
A churning of shadows and marsh-light and roiling smokes.
It had eyes, and they were looking at him.
In another place:
Lord Malcorn reined his horse to a stop and sat for a moment looking down a
shadowy slope to a doorway. It was a big door completely blocking a narrow valley,
big enough to dwarf even the part-Shewish lord of Malcorn, and it was open.
Firelight--though no fires were to be seen--gleamed on carven brass.
Behind him, Math op Owain squinted at the two halves of the door, trying to make
out what the carvings showed. When he did, he leaned to the side and threw up. No
one should even imagine such things, much less carve them.
"Those are not carvings," Uncle Wolf said beside him. The old shaman's voice
was like iron. "Those are lost souls transmuted to metal, or something like it."
"How could the Gates of Hell be anything other than an abomination?" Malcorn
asked. His voice was mild, but Math could hear the iron there, too, and shivered.
"This is the door we must close and seal."
"This is beyond my understanding," Math said. "You will have to tell me what to
do here."
"You will be our physical defense; we will not be allowed to approach the Gates
without battle. I will be the magical defense," Wolf said. "And Lord Malcorn will
deal with the Gates themselves."

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
I'm young to be here, but it's still a great pleasure! Thanks to Surgical for
giving me the opportunity...
Who am I? Well, I have been named after Crictor the Snake, the main character
from a Children's book by Tomi Ungerer, and I'm a cute gentle snake, so I will try to
be a benevolent Duelmaster.
As as testimony, I will leave a piece of snake skin.
Crictor.
SPY REPORT
If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
MORYA brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. THE CONDEMNED turned their 2-3-0 turn
into a 5th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get
put on hit lists. Now let's all watch PHANTACITY's heads swell from their 4-1-0 this
turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big shots, big talk, big deal. Of course, we're all terribly
impressed to see GIMLEE VAINE win a fight and gain 21 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk,
PATTE DE SAGUAR beat NENA VIXIN and NENA VIXIN lost 12 points. You're breakin' my
heart. OTHER challenged MORYA's Duelmaster for a shot at the throne. And it's out
with the old, in with the new, as OTHER takes the Title and last week's bar tab from
the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. Salty's Chowder House, humph! I've tasted better ale
at mortuaries. Where do they get this stuff? From MORYA's trash dumps?
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. What's
the big D? FORCE OF FIVE was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered...
grumble... mumble... curse... And it looks like SONS OF MARS avoided them the most
this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. WHITE BECT was
challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or
feared? Heh, heh. I guess I can give a little credit to ANFERROUS of STEEL AND SILK
for challenging up by 23 to WHITE BECT. ANFERROUS won to get 80 points of
recognition.
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. It's about time TEZCATLIPOCA got beat for
picking on warriors like VRTOGLAVA. Bravo, PHANTACITY. See you at Salty's Chowder
House. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches up with
you sooner that later?
There's got to be a better place in MORYA to get a drink than Salty's Chowder
House! Any suggestions? Just wait 'till next time I show up here, I won't be so
nice! So nyaaah! I see the crowds are getting restless, I must leave now-- Snide
Clemens

Mr. Pentarque -- I apologize for calling you La Pentarque. It was unintentional and
a stupid slip on my part. Henceforth I will try very, very, very hard to assure you
are known as Le Pentarque. -- Miss Finance Manager
Mars -- I have avenged the death of Parking Fees in a blood feud. The boss says
there shall be no more blood feuds to Quintus, as the deed is done. We have no wish
for his blood. (We don't like parking fees either.) -- Other
P.S. That means there will be no more wrath from The Expense Accounts. -- Finance
Manager
Nena Vixen -- Well, that challenge got me a loss. Well done! Nice job sabotaging
the washing machine. -- Laundry
A backpack full of rock samples will do that.
Patte -- I guess I showed you not to mess with rental cars. By the way, is that La
Patte or Le Patte? -- Rental Car
Cloudrider -- I hope you learned something. -- Training
Jamie Lee -- That victory was sealed with a kiss. -- Postage
Surgical -- A BIG congrats to you. Don't know if Adie or others are watching, but we
send out kudos. -- Kennelworth, Mino, and even Purple People Eater
Crictor Ungerer -- Congratulations on the DM Title. Salute. -- Finance Manager
P.S. But Other wants that title and he is calling out La Crictor Ungerer
"Le Pentarque -- P.S. It was damn close against Tezcatlipoca..." Yes, indeed, Mr.
Pentarque, it was VERY darn close between Tezc and Other. -- Finance Manager
Michael Eldritch -- Nice "burner" in Experimentia. Very nice. Thanks for sharing.
-- Finance Manager
Ho ho ho. Merry Christmas to all. May you have plenty of cash to finance a great
one. -- Finance Manager
P.S. For those interested, our Christmas list includes ... a 21 wit warrior, a new
3-wood, lotsa toys for the grandkids, and a way to remember it is Le Pentarque rather
than La Pentarque.
Experientia is a nice warrior. Well done! -- Le Pentarque
I won't rent that Car again... Ugh. -- Patte de Saguar
I was too presomptuous, beautiful Zoe... nicely done. -- Tezcatlipoca.
Veteran Mercenary -- Huh. I guess you've seen MY moves before. -- Anferrous
Crictor Ingerer -- Slipped parrys... *sigh* They'll be the death of me one day. --
Surgical
Letter Left for Zod -- Thanx for the parting match. -- Experientia
Blood Hawk -- I had a bad feeling about that challenge from the get-go. -- Pyrite
Venomous Concubine -- I can be pretty venomous myself, darlin'. Go find another
spice to abuse. -- Valerian
Ah, how quickly glory fades. Well done, Le Pentarque, Crictor's put you back on top.
From the looks of Experientia's replacement, I'll be sponsoring some torchlight
fights in the immediate future. I'm kinda stretched thin right now (I'm sure the
Scribe knows how that feels *wry grin*) so I'll just salute all on another fine
round. -- Michael Eldritch
P.S. Oh yeah, DM 83 could REALLY use some new blood, folks. My Zeitgeist is one of
only four to fight last turn. Slow, no-tourney arena, any takers?
Finance Manager -- Thank you for the welcome. Once I learn what I'm doing I want a
rematch. -- Colle Ketor
Odin's Chosen -- You can run, but you can't hide. -- Luckii Duval
Stonewalker -- Sorry we couldn't spend more time together. -- Ghost of Kazzar

D'Haran Empire
Ziggy -- Opening your eyes, you would see that two of us had their own feuds and
another was new and wasn't feuding with no experience. Only two left were both so
high you'd cry either way, so I thought go from the top. Thought you'd like the
skills, but if not, send them back and I'll find you a more unintelligent winner to
lose to. -- Scarlet
Zod -- Bold moves lead to great rewards. I'm happy with the payment. -- Cascella
Berthgar Pax -- Since you know my style, keep your headgear but drop some armor so
you won't get tired so fast. Dorthy and Genevive's style are better suited anyway,
until you gain more experience. -- Jennsen
Gimlee Vaine -- I've sort of been looked at as a misfit too. You can overcome it
like me. -- Theriault
Quintus Flabius Maximus -- Defeat me four times? Not likely! If Expense Account
doesn't take you out, I'll help you work some weight off to give me a better practice
session later. -- Chandalen
Jorja -- Received diplo and understand what you mean. Thanks! -- D'Haran Empire
White Bect -- It sounds like... hmm, a flower in the woods north of town. Yeah,
that's how I'm going to think of you. A MEAN flower. -- Lorvandis
Pyrite -- Ah, for a minute there, I thought you were from Boxorox, but I see that you
are not. Still, one can strike sparks from you either way. -- Blood Hawk
Boomerang -- Isn't a force of five a really nasty hurricane? Good thing you aren't,
I wouldn't like a hurricane. -- Madeline
P.S. Or "really nasty," either.
Dorothy Pax -- Listen, armor is your friend! Repeat this every night before you go
to bed, and every morning as soon as you get up, and ESPECIALLY every fight day
before stepping into the arena. -- Stonewalker
Training -- Huh, you may be expensive, but a lack of training is even more expensive.
-- Cloudrider
