His companions had assured him that there would be physical threats, and physical threats were his business here. He felt inadequate to face those probably-numerous threats alone, but what else was new? He had it to do. Because he was looking around, he was the first to see three people--human- looking people--scrambling down one side of the valley and waving their arms. Probably shouting, but he couldn't hear anything except an endless waterfall/wildfire sort of roar coming out of the doorway. "More gladiators!" he said, staring. Remembering the problem, he looked to the sides and behind before turning back toward them. "I recognize the one in the lead--Young Joan, from Morya--" Uncle Wolf didn't look around, but he grunted in satisfaction. "Good. I started some coming from another direction, glad they made it. You'll have help on the defense, Math." "That might make the difference," Math said. "I was a little worried about... things." After a moment he added, "I can't watch everywhere at once." Wolf glanced at him and smiled grimly. "If you'd had to do it alone, you would have managed. I was in no doubt of that." "I was," Math muttered. He surveyed the surroundings again. It seemed wrong, too easy, that they should be able to ride up to the doorway unopposed. Not even seeing anyone. Somewhere an ambush was waiting for them. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Edge of Night #49 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + The Silent Place near Zuwayza: After Agro left, Blackwind didn't have much to do except stay alert and watch for something approaching this hole in the fence from either direction. Eyes in the back of his head would have been useful. Or a long dry season making the leaves on the ground crackly, to warn of anything coming through the trees. But the leaves were sodden with weeks of rain and snow; there would be no sound from them. There was no sound from them, and yet when the gladiator turned in his regular visual round, there was Redfox coming along the fence. Blackwind scanned his companion quickly. It looked like the Rirorni had minor injuries, major worries. Presumably Agro was guarding the main gate now. "We have to go inside," Redfox said without preliminaries. Blackwind blinked. "Why? And what about guarding the gates?" He glanced toward the hole in the fence. The roiling cloud was still there just inside. Waiting. "Vekhirn--" He sighed suddenly and scrubbed a hand across his face. "Uncle Wolf gave me the names of some people who could be trusted, if we encountered them, and one is this Vekhirn, a Karnhorn magician." He noticed Blackwind's skeptical expression and grimaced. "Yeah, I know, trust a Karnhorn? But Wolf said this one's okay. And he... I guess I'd say he 'feels' okay to me. He says we have to go into the Silent Place, there's a portal in there somewhere that we have to go through. Because Uncle Wolf and Lord Malcorn need us... somewhere." "You agreed to this?" "I guess, for me, anyway. I've had a feeling that something was, I dunno, not exactly wrong but coming to a climax, and I should be there to help. And I do trust this guy to be telling true, partly because of what I was already feeling." "Okay." Blackwind nodded and squared his shoulders. "If you go, I go, too. But what about guarding the perimeter of the Silent Place?" "Agro will stay here, and Vekhirn has committed himself to staying here, too. He says his spells will work for this, even if he can't seal the barrier permanently. He-- Here he comes now. You can ask him yourself." The man coming toward them was physically a typical Karnhorn, medium height, slim, dark, with a beak of a nose and sharp, narrow eyes. His clothing and accessories were typical of all magicians, robe with symbols on it, tall pointed hat (it had a turban wound round the base, but he was, after all, a Karnhorn), carved staff with a crystal on the top. He looked determined. "You must go at once," he said. "The Malcorn needs you--" "It's taken him a while to get wherever he is," Blackwind objected. "How're we going to get there in time to do him any good?" "He had to go there," the magician explained. He was more patient than either gladiator would have expected. "He had to find the way, because the Spirit Lands are always in flux. But you do not have to find the way, I have a talisman that will take you directly to the Malcorn, wherever he may be." He pulled a small teardrop of crystal out of some hidden pocket of his robe. It was suspended from a fine golden chain, and it glittered like a fallen star in the moonlight. "This will be your guide, and it will take you to the Malcorn." Blackwind glanced at Redfox. The Rirorni seemed calm but tense. Resolved. He was going. And where a Rirorni led, surely a man of Malcorn would not stay behind. He nodded. "Will that thing help us find the portal we need inside the Silent Place?" Something that might have been relief flitted across the magician's face, covered quickly with professional calm. "Yes, it will. To walk side by side will be enough in most places, but when you pass through the portal and any similar magical structure, you must be in contact with each other if you are not to become separated." Fighting the conviction that he was making a mistake, Blackwind reached out and took the talisman by the chain. It was heavier than he had expected of such a little thing. "We go back and enter the Silent Place through the main gate?" "That is not necessary. You can enter here quite well, and then I will seal it behind you." + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Report from the Tourney #2 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Larkin here once again, with more interviews from the tourney. This time I'm talking to a new manager, so new he doesn't even have a manager name. "Sir... what would you like me to call you, by the way?" "Why do you have to call me anything? I don't understand why you want to interview me. There are lots of great managers here who could probably tell you stuff--" "I'm looking for a new perspective, the point of view of someone who is just starting out with the gladiatorial games." "Oh. Well, I guess that would be me." "Absolutely right! Tell me, what do you think of the tourney? This is your first, right?" "Right, my first," the young man agreed. "And it's GREAT! Everyone is just great here! I mean, most of these managers, they're, like, legends, you know? Everybody's heard of them, and they have stables of HUNDREDS of gladiators, and they've been polishing their tricks for YEARS, and I didn't figure I had much of a chance, you know?" "The popular view is that no matter how much you know, the arena can always throw a surprise at you--" "Yeah, yeah, I've heard that. I don't know if I believe it, but I've heard it. But that isn't the best thing about this tourney. The best thing is that everyone here has been GREAT. Or else I didn't meet them--the ones that might not have been. But I think I met just about everyone, and--" "And they were great. I'm glad. But perhaps you could tell our readers a little more, maybe tell them how these experienced managers were great to you?" "Well, yeah, okay. It's that everyone was so friendly and helpful, see? The ENTIRE Consortium talked to me about warrior design, for instance. I learned a lot there. And, well, there was Mannequin, and The Greek Guy, and I actually met Manager, too! And they were all really helpful. Advice, you know, and charts, and all that stuff that was so confusing. It was just the best experience! I'm going to do it again, for sure!" * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 636): EIGHTH MATE of SEA DOGS (One Armed Bandit, mgr.) But that tussle with Valerian took everything out of me, so expect a very short DM Column. (If I quit now, would that be really, really short?) When I next fight in Morya as Duelmaster, I will have participated in the Winter Face. Second thought, I hope I am still alive and here after that! Other, Duelmaster II SPY REPORT Greetings, Warriors of MORYA. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to give you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. THE CONDEMNED after a sorry 2-3-0 might want to consider abandoning the sands and taking up singing the 'Can't fight no more' blues! Nothing works for a team like victory (How's that for a perceptive observation?) as FORCE OF FIVE can attest... THE PENTARCHY posted a nice gain, to come in 3rd. Everybody loves a winner... PHANTACITY had cause to celebrate, after SECI got 29 points by beating LORVANDIS. Duelmaster OTHER from EXPENSE ACCOUNT is going for the gold, as it challenged THE PENTARCHY's CRICTOR UNGERER. Ooh, the excitement! CRICTOR UNGERER found out that MORYA isn't a democracy. You've gotta be the best to be Duelmaster here! Word has it one team in MORYA is using psychics to predict wins. They lead a charmed life! My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter. But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! Like the noble eagle soaring amongst the mountaintops, so stand the warriors of SONS OF MARS, alone and unchallenged. As a woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of FORCE OF FIVE, so did that sorry team shy from SONS OF MARS Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes, and PYRITE is it right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't STEEL AND SILK proud! Call 'im brash! Call 'im brassy! Call 'im brave! Call 'im sassy! IWRON DESTUDE will face VRTOGLAVA, up by 29. Aaaah, just call 'im dead meat. Like a fly challenging a flyswatter, IWRON DESTUDE challenged VRTOGLAVA, and got squashed. We sadists got a kick out it! (as did IWRON DESTUDE) NENA VIXIN challenged PYRITE! Who says THE CONDEMNED are just a bunch of wimps! NENA VIXIN of THE CONDEMNED kept hers wits as she won victory over PYRITE. Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after life! Congratulations, SECI. The manager of DODGE BULLETS should have sent LORVANDIS to the Dark Arena for having a 20-25-0 long ago. I get a special thrill from seeing innocent spawn like TRAINING from EXPENSE ACCOUNT get pointlessly killed. Good show, PIPNI! (No mercy.) Oh hard! that to strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting! Do not think spyreporting in MORYA is the highlight of my life. My fingers tire and I fear my incessant prattling may cause unfair judgement upon my impeccable character. Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for MORYA?
