The Silent Place:

The cloud thing watched them come. It still seemed wrong that a cloud should be
able to watch anything, or care about anything, but then, this cloud WAS wrong. A
creature, not a cloud. Blackwind raised his blade, caught a glint of light down it,
sunlight in this darkest place. Where did you strike a cloud, where were its vitals?
It roiled like a thunderstorm with internal winds, shifted right and left as
though trying to feint him out of position. Or distract him from some partner
cutting in from behind--
"Another one back here," Redfox muttered. "I've got it covered, but don't back
up."
Ah, okay. A good man at his back was better than armor. Time to deal with his
own problem, then. The eyes, that was probably the best target he'd have. He
watched it twitching around in front of him for another few seconds and then lunged.
No warning, no flourishes, just the lunge, gleaming steel with all his weight and
speed behind it.
The cloud recoiled and began to slide away. Not fast enough. The sword plunged
to the hilt in the roiling darkness, flaring sunbright just before it sheathed itself
in the cloudy body. There was no resistance such as a body would offer, but the
internal currents of the thing wrenched at the blade, trying to tear it from his
grip. He stumbled off-balance and went to one knee but locked his second hand over
the hilt to strengthen his hold.
The talisman, which was still dangling from his off-hand by its chain, twirled
and then strained out parallel to the blade of his sword. Fat silver-blue sparks
jumped from it to the sword, then ricocheted like lightning toward the cloud. Which
winced away. Blackwind wouldn't have thought a cloud could wince, but this one was
doing it. Sliding off his blade, too, so that it dripped... something. Milky and
glinting, falling to the ground and lying there like pearls. Hailstones? Well, why
not, if it was a cloud?
He got to his feet again and followed, trying to keep pressure on the cloud that
was now retreating, and following the talisman as well. He didn't dare look away
from the cloud to see if--
     "Right behind you," Redfox said.

The Spirit Land:

Necroma, Young Joan, and Cloudrider hesitated on the edge of the cliff, studying
the possibilities.
"You're sure we can't just *believe* a way down?" Cloudrider asked again.
"No, I'm not sure," the young Necromancer said. "Nobody can be sure about
things here. You can try. But I don't expect it to work--"
"And your skepticism is part of the body of belief at work here," Young Joan
finished. She pointed off to the side, where a seam in the rocky face of the cliff
suggested a path. "Forget trying to create a way down and let's follow that ledge."
Cloudrider muttered something about mountain goats but moved in the indicated
direction. "What do we do when we get down into the valley, then?"
"The Valley of the Shadow," Necroma corrected absently. "I have no idea what
we're supposed to do." She glanced at Joan and raised an eyebrow in question.
"We'll ask Uncle Wolf," Joan said.
"But he isn't here!" 'Rider protested.
"He's down there." They had come far enough along the cliff to have a different
view down into the valley, and Joan pointed. A group of three riders were crossing
toward the flame-lit gates. One of them was clearly the shaman Wolf in full
ceremonial regalia, one was a black-maned Shew, and the third seemed ordinary.
"Three isn't enough to storm the Gate of Hell, so I guess there will be something for
us."
"And six is enough?" Cloudrider muttered. "Oh, joy."

Down in the Valley:

Math looked at the huge gates and the shadows moving just within them. Probably
demons, what else would you expect in the Gate of Hell? He had, not for the first
time, the feeling of being out of his depth. He opened his mouth to say so, then
looked at Wolf and Lord Malcorn, both focused on whatever they were planning to do,
and shut it again. On the face of it, this task was impossible for any kind of
reason you could imagine: the gate leaves were too heavy--well, he didn't know that,
but they looked heavy, and the forces or beings who had opened them were bound to
resist, and three was just too small a number to storm Hell. But his companions were
going forward as though they had a chance, so he could hardly do less. He tested his
sword to make sure it was loose in the scabbard and ready to come out, but he didn't
draw it yet. A drawn sword was a declaration of intent to fight, and if this could
be solved short of combat, that suited him.

Coming through:

The cloud dissolved as it came up against a building of some kind. Blackwind
bit down on a curse--this didn't seem like a good place to be cursing. But if that
thing was going around behind them and reforming-- He'd been following faster than
he had realized and didn't have time to stop before slamming into the wall. Barely
had time to see that it was built of weathered stone, blotched with lichens that
glowed with a faint phosphorescence, carved into the niche-shape of a false door,
such as he had seen on temples elsewhere. And then he slammed into the stones... and
fell through.
A moment later, Redfox followed, but the Rirorni had had enough warning to jump
clear of his companion, and landed rolling just beyond.
Blackwind scrambled to his feet--never good to meet a possible battle lying on
the ground--and looked around. They were in a shadow-filled valley, almost a canyon,
and a little way on it was lit with a fiery gleam where brass-bound gates opened in
one of the canyon walls. Three horsemen were approaching up the valley from the
other side of the gate. One was big and black and solid, unexpectedly reassuring:
Lord Malcorn.
"I think we're here," Blackwind said.

                             Notes from the arena champ.

The presence of two columns is explained in the personals. I'm leaving them both in
to make the other arenas jealous. -- the Editor

I made it! No, I don't mean Duelmaster, not that I am not happy I made that
too, but I made it out of The Face-To-Face alive. I am here! Let me tell you about
it.
I was pleased with my 4-3 showing as a two-FE-short Champion. I started out
well, besting a slasher, plunger and basher to go 3-0. Then I ran into two strikers,
which I split. Two final slashers, Shaderunner of Ghost Riders Too (DM18), and
Copsar of Jakari's TTO (DM84) finished me off. I was really 5-3 as I ran in a grudge
Match against one of the TVs (lunger Love of Lords Of Virtue of DM74) and patiently
put love down in six.
I am pleased to have been selected as a Lord Protector, and here is what is
known about me--before the announcement of my favorites.

Finally! That Other guy left! I am very proud to be on the throne, even though my
title fight against the Kung-Fu Master was not the most glorious ever. Humm... let
me think. I was here once before, wasn't I? Anyway, I'll try to stay longer this
time, and will leave another snake skin on the steps.

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings, warriors of MORYA! Once again I've been called out of retirement for
my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Biff! Pow! MORYA watched with glee as
THE PENTARCHY got knocked off top spot by PHANTACITY! Up 'n down. Up 'n down.
Rankings always change. Up 'n down. I think I'm gonna be... Well, PHANTACITY's 1st
moved them up to 4-1-0 place. FORCE OF FIVE showed MORYA what they were made of as
they fought with a vengeance to walk off with 4-1-0. What's with CALL OF THE SEA?
He actually beat SONS OF MARS' QUINTUS MAXIMUS, and walked away with 24 more points
from the fight. Major screwup at SONS OF MARS. QUINTUS MAXIMUS lost 21 points to
CALL OF THE SEA. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe QUINTUS MAXIMUS will provide
more easy wins... STEEL AND SILK's hatred of THE PENTARCHY surfaced again as
VALERIAN challenged MORYA's top dog. VALERIAN was reminded on the sands why CRICTOR
UNGERER is Duelmaster. Advice to fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting!
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. How
well I know the feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of
practive, PHANTACITY! In my day, no team with a 112-103-10 would scare me off!
What's the problem, THE PENTARCHY? What do people see in SCARLET? Hers 13-9-0?
D'HARAN EMPIRE ain't talkin', but she's got 86 points. VRTOGLAVA didn't quite know
what to make of a challenge she received from CHANDALEN of D'HARAN EMPIRE, who is 25
points below her. CHANDALEN perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he overcame
VRTOGLAVA and ended up with 59 recognition points.
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. How long have I been here? I got people to see,
places to go...
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
The end of another Spyreport! That's cause for celebration in my book! Time for my
medication, so I'll leave now. Practice, practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen

Uh, mea culpa. This budget deficiency and the impending debt load is getting to me!
I helped Other pen his "extra" DM Column, having thought that the March results were
posted earlier this AM, when they were not. I unsuspectingly reread the "old"
newsletter, and then posted. It was not until I closely examined the 2nd fight, that
I noticed the same fights and challenges as last time. So, enjoy the column, then
discard it! I have learned some lessons:
Read the dates and results CLOSELY before acting.
Do not depend on RSI to post electronic results consistently "on time"--
especially on Mondays
Finish the first cup of coffee before beginning the early morning activities
Anyway, until the results are REALLY posted, I remain,
     Finance Manager, Expense Accounts
P.S. Expect some more personals LATER.

All -- Thanks for your compliments. It was fun in the arena, but Spymaster gobbled
me up and spit me out! Thank the gods for immortality! Sayanora. -- Other

Pipni -- I already had you marked down as a successful bloodfeud when you hung me out
to dry. I learned a valuable lesson. Never underestimate the competition. You are
very, very good. Salute. -- Laundry

Lizard -- You may have been the force of five, but I was worth six! Besides, I am
from the mighty USPS and I may not even have to work on Saturdays soon. Hah! --
Postage

In which case all the Saturday-run games will be rescheduled.

Colle Ketor -- "Stable Managers for Dummies" in another form is available on line at
the "Duel II" site or under "Terrablood." If you cannot access them, then perhaps
our good friend Jorja can direct you to something of value. Meanwhile, feel free to
ask questions in the personals. -- Finance Manager

Cloudrider -- You made my day with this personal ad. "Postage -- Well, what did you
expect? You are a stamp, so I licked you. -- Cloudrider". Yep. Made my day! --
Finance manager

The Mail-In Tournament is coming soon. Good luck to all. Bring home some honors to
Morya. -- Finance Manager
P.S. We are fighting a little light in the arena at the moment as we have three
timed, including two rookies, going to The Mailer.

And the best of luck to them.

Wow!!!!! BIG point gain, Steel And Silk! Wow! We are avoiding! -- Finance Manager

Other was better on the sand than on paper. Salute to the Manager! He sure can
spare money. -- Le Pentarque

I could have won this one... well, Pogodi, you dont like my head, or you desperately
want it at your belt? -- Lourdepatte

All -- I seem to be having a lot of difficulty with Hal lately, so here's Surgical on
more time: 15(13)-5(4)-9-17-19(17)-14(13)-12(11), pretty much mode, QS, riposte
tactic, attack learn; master attack, adex initiative, & ex parry. He is my first

wall of steel grad, but I'm only 861 Lord Protectors behind the Consortium now! Oh,
his rhythm was mo/lo. Well done Finance Manger. -- Michael Eldritch, mgr Steel and
Silk

I think hal has formed a labor union of one entity and then gone on strike.

Marcus Gegulus -- Both of us wore the wrong armor for THAT match! -- Muse

Userous Merchant -- Consider that a warning, my userous friend. -- Pyrite, not Gold

Seci -- Graduate, or get out my way, bub! -- Balerian

Blood Hawk -- We really need to quit meeting like this, as your name give me the
shills. -- Anferrous

Crictor Ungerer -- Let's see if you deserve to keep that throne, eh? -- Valerian

Luckii Duval -- You may call that luck, but I don't. -- Madeline

Anferrous -- Not enough. You have too much steel in your nature even so. -- Blood
Hawk

Juggernaut -- An interesting speculation. Are you "naut" because of a "jugger," or
do you set all juggers at naut when you meet them? -- Cloudrider

Flen Asail -- So, why were you condemned? I hope it was for something really rich,
be ashamed to be condemned for a peccadillo. -- Stonewalker

Oofgar Shmid -- The bigger they are.... -- Lily of Sarmatia

Colle Ketor -- One of my colleagues runs a stable in Aruak City and Zorpunt, you
could try there. -- Jorja
P.S. I am told she has some fine horses, not that I am thrilled by horses myself.
